Dear People of God, Happy Pentecost. May you use the gifts of the Holy Spirt for the up building of your family, your community and your Church. This past couple of weeks in my job as Dean I’ve been to all the parishes of the Blessed [soon to be Saint] Teresa of Calcutta Deanery and have been impressed by the variety of ways those gifts are being used to create vibrant, prayerful and successful parishes in the inner city of Toledo. We often think of the inner city as blighted, poverty-stricken, crime ridden and something to be avoided but I must admit that our Catholic communities are all doing very well. Perhaps that’s the prayerful support we receive from our patroness, Teresa whose own ministry was focused in the inner city of Calcutta where poverty could be smelled in the air, felt on the skin, and even tasted on the tongue. For those of you unfamiliar with the Deanery, it encompasses Rosary Cathedral parish, Sts. Peter and Paul the Hispanic-centric parish, St. Martin de Porres, a multicultural Afro-centric parish, Sts. Adalbert and Hedwig, a Polish parish, St. Joseph the Latin traditionalist parish, St. Charles and St. Hyacinth, two partnered parishes which form the western boundary of the deanery, and of course our own sister parishes of St. Patrick and Immaculate Conception. You’ll find the DeSales Outreach Center in the deanery as well as the Padua Center which provides a variety of services to the area around old St. Anthony’s.

Our deanery is home to two of the largest hospitals in the city: Mercy and Mercy/St. Vincent. Catholic education continues to be a hallmark of the deanery with Mercy College, Central Catholic High school, and the two campuses (Cathedral and Queen of Apostles) of the Central City Ministries. That’s a lot in a relatively small geographical area. And the area is actually among the safest in Toledo. It’s also growing in population, with some new housing in the down town and scattered throughout the inner city. The parishes provide outreach, food pantries, St. Vincent de Paul units, family assistance, immigration services and a whole lot more the Holy Spirit had in mind when passing out those famous gifts. By the way, I hope everyone knows that Blessed Teresa is going to be canonized on September the 4th. The deanery is planning some special events around that date, so keep your calendar open. The diocese is also planning an interreligious event because Teresa worked with Moslems and Hindus as well as Christians. As we get closer to the September date you’ll be given lots of information about those exciting events.

Msgr. Chris

The Celebration of Sacraments Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered

parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gatherings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday or by appointment. Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage. Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.

Prayer Hack! May is Marian Month, prompting more people to say the Rosary during this time. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once said, “The Rosary is the best therapy for these distraught, unhappy, fearful, and frustrated souls, precisely because it involves the simultaneous use of three powers: the physical, the vocal, and the spiritual…” Use these Rosary hacks (from K.W.) to help you make the Rosary a more regular practice in your life. *Offer up each decade for a specific intention. *Split it up. Pray a decade of the Rosary at different times of the day. *Pick a set time such as after dinner when the family is already gathered together Do you have a prayer hack you’d like to share? The Evangelization Committee is looking for ideas to pass along. Please email your prayer hack idea(s) to [email protected]

.
