THE CANDLE Seven Faith Practices: Pray, Study, Worship, Invite, Encourage, Serve, Give

Sisters and Brothers in Christ

Worship Services

In two years I’ll be an octogenarian. I can hardly spell the word let alone believe that I’ll survive in the world that long. (The ELCA Pension Plan estimates my “lift off” to be at age 87). Many of my classmates have died. My health is remarkably good. I’m grateful to God.

Palm Sunday, March 24 9am · 11:30am; Holy Communion

Longevity alone is not the only desirable goal. I’m very grateful for health of body, mind, and spirit that allows me to provide fruitful ministry. Therefore, I’m also grateful to Advent congregation for providing me with a contract and venue for that ministry. Many of the Advent folks have become dear friends, as well as fellow citizens with the saints. We’ve been laborers together in Christ’s vineyard in many ways. I look forward to more. In spite of all my experience, I still sin. I unknowingly hurt feelings, forget appointments, and act inappropriately. When I do that to you, tell me about it. I hope you’ll forgive me also. If I do something well, tell me about it. It may lead to expanding mission and ministry that is helpful. Expanding Christ’s Kingdom really counts! The plan is that I serve ten hours per week. My office will remain in my house at 8032 Munson Road (it’s the yellow brick ranch 3 houses east of the church building but across the street). I plan to walk to work. It is our prayer that by enlarging the staff for very low cost more people will become a part of Advent congregation. My title will be Associate Pastor. My job description will be formulated into a contract. We need to evaluate the effects of my efforts as time goes on.

Maundy Thursday, March 28 12pm & 7pm; Holy Communion; First Communion (7pm) Good Friday, March 29 12pm & 7pm Easter Vigil, Saturday, March 30 6pm; Holy Communion

Please pray for our staff and mission. Jesus wants more people following Him. Your prayers will do what my work can’t. In Jesus,

PRAYER AND SPIRITUALITY Prayer Chain The Prayer Chain is an intentional ministry focused through a network of callers. To request prayers by the prayer chain, call Sue Keeley, Prayer Chain Coordinator, at 209-8006 or email your requests to [email protected]. The Prayer Board is located outside the office where you may list your prayer concerns or to contact Sue Keeley at 209-8006 or [email protected].

The Power of Prayer Do you wish to feel strengthened and fulfilled by offering your time to help others? Nothing could be more gratifying than lifting someone up in prayer in their time of need. The Advent prayer chain is looking for more people who would like to become part of this powerful ministry. Being a member of the prayer chain, prayer requests are sent to you either by e-mail or via the phone tree, then, we ask you to pray. What an honor and privilege it is to pray to our Heavenly Father on someone’s behalf. Please contact Sue Keeley @ 209-8006 or by e-mail at [email protected] if you would like to become part of the prayer chain ministry, or if you have any questions. Prayer is Powerful!!

Honoring our Heroes Gene E. Allen has been a member of Advent since 2004. He was a US Army draftee from May 1956 until May 1958. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. His permanent assignment was to the 218t Engineer Base Topographic Mapping Company at the Presidio of San Francisco where he worked on mapping the Pacific Islands of Bataan and Bougainville. To give some frame of reference as to the hardship of this assignment, the Presidio, was 6th Army Headquarters and was often referred to as the Country Club of the U.S. Army. The Presidio is now a National Park. He has always felt that his assignment to a topographic mapping company was somewhat unique as that was his occupation in civilian life. A fortunate two month temporary duty assignment to a Combat Engineer unit in Fort Riley, KS for maneuvers meant that on return to San Francisco he had less than the requisite 18 months of service time remaining for overseas deployment. Because of that, his wife was able to join him and they lived off post. It was much like a civilian job at that point going to base every day and then home at night. He was discharged with the rank of Specialist 3rd class which was roughly equivalent to the line rank of PFC. At that time a discharge was not complete without an additional 4 years in the reserves where he was an active member of an Artillery unit in Cleveland for two years followed by two more years of inactive reserve duty. His rank at discharge was Spec 5 which was roughly equivalent to the line rank of SGT.

First, let me thank the children for the hand-made get well wishes. They brought a smile to my face and love to my heart. What a wonderful surprise! A big thank you to their teacher, Mrs. Marshaus. How do I find the right words to thank Advent. I am doing quite well and hope to recover 100% from this stroke real soon. Thank God it wasn’t a severe one. Your kindness, caring, prayers and beautiful cards mean so much to me. Is it any wonder why I love Advent what with the hospital visits from Pr. Steve and many members, the delicious suppers and the well wishes of the entire congregation. Thank you all! — In Christian Love, Helen Cahill

Due to new changes and costly demands from the Postal Service, we will no longer be mailing the newsletters via ‘Bulk Mail’. For those persons who do not have e-mail, your newsletters will be available in the narthex for you to pick up or they can be mailed. If you haven’t already been contacted, please let us know if you are willing to pick yours up and help save the church some money. It is very important to send in your email address to the church office. Some email addresses have changed and the office has not been notified. If you are unsure you gave us those changes, please notify the office anyway.

You can go to our website (adventmentor.org) and read the upcoming Sunday’s Beacon? Go to our website at adventmentor.org and from the left hand column select “Advent Archives”. This will link you to the page where previous Candles and Beacons are posted. Missed church on Sunday and want to read the Beacon? Check it out! Beacons are posted Thursday afternoons.

SERVICE OUTREACH Outreach opportunities The next few months will provide some great opportunities to help our food pantry staff as several of our members vacation in the Sunny South. We are in need of a volunteer to assist in a shopping trip to the Cleveland Food Bank on the morning of March 19 to help shop for grocery items and take them to St Andrew Church. These shopping days enable us to pick up perishables (produce, bread, etc) and other items that would not otherwise be available at the distributions. We also need at least two people to help unload and stock our monthly truck delivery from the Cleveland Food Bank on March 21 and April 18. The truck usually arrives at 12:45pm. We need your help! Please consider spending a few hours helping our neighbors who depend on Advent to supplement their food requirements. To volunteer or get more information, please contact Jean Rhodes at 440953-9495 or 440-739-0579. If you would like to volunteer at the Food Pantry or if you would like to be on a list of "alternates" to call in case we need more volunteers, please contact Jean.

Other opportunities Body of Christ Church in Willoughby and Prince of Peace Church in Mentor have partnered to sponsor a service ministry called “Hearts 2 Hands” (H2H). This program provides taxable goods not available through food stamps and other services such as haircuts, family portraits, and resume assistance. Services will be available on the last Saturday of each month at the following locations: • Body of Christ Church (for residents of Willoughby, Eastlake, Wickliffe, Willowick and Timberlake) from 9am to 11am. • Prince of Peace Church (for residents of Mentor and Mentor-on-the-Lake) from 10am to 1pm If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please email [email protected] or [email protected]. Be watching the upcoming issues of The Candle for information on our annual Baby Bottle Boomerang for Hannah’s House. The Service & Outreach Committee meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7pm in the narthex. If you have a new idea or want to get more involved, please come! All are welcome.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Points from your Parish Nurse . . . ♥ Here we are in March preparing for Easter which comes early this year, March 31st. How is your Lent going? Are you making any extra sacrifices? Attending any Bible studies or mid-week Lenten services? Spending any extra time in prayer this season? Do you believe that prayer has power? I want to share something from the Lenten devotional by Henri Nouwen. He said, “We often wonder what we can do for others, especially for those in great need. It is not a sign of powerlessness when we say: “We must pray for one another.” To pray for one another is, first of all, to acknowledge, in the presence of God, that we belong to each other as children of the same God. Without this acknowledgement of human solidarity, what we do for one another does not flow from who we truly are. We are brothers and sisters, not competitors or rivals. We are children of one God, not partisans of different gods. To pray, that is to listen to the voice of the One who calls us the ” beloved”, is to learn that the voice excludes no one. Where I dwell, God dwells with me, and where God dwells with me I find all my sisters and brothers.” After reading this passage I felt a need to share my thoughts on how important and powerful prayer is. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ and what a blessing it is to lift each other in prayer! Lord, I believe that in every prayer you are calling me to a new life. Take away my fears so I can respond to your call in service to others. “You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…”Matthew 5:43-44 ♥ The next Care Team meeting will be Saturday, March 2 at 10am. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, please feel welcome and come to the meeting. We meet quarterly on the first Saturday of the month at 10am for an hour. If you want to become a Eucharistic Minister and take communion to our homebound members or are interested in being part of the Meals for Members portion of our ministry, please join us. If you have any questions, call me at 440-346-3120. ♥ The Annual March for Meals will be held on Saturday, March 9 from 8am-10am at the Great Lakes Mall. This event is the annual fundraiser for the Lake County Council on Aging and all the proceeds will benefit their Meals on Wheels Program. Cost is $10/adult and $5/child 12 and under. Registration is at 8am and the walk begins at 8:30am. There will be music and refreshments provided and you can walk around the mall as many or few times as you wish.

Come join the “A-TEAM” and sign up online at www.lccoa.org. today! ♥ Blood pressure screenings will be held on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 7pm by Mary Jo Jones and Sunday from 10am-11am in the Parish Nurse office. Stop by to get yours checked. It’s free and it’s painless! ♥ Unfortunately the CPR class had to be canceled in February due to illness but we are rescheduling it for Saturday, March ? from 9am-11am. There will be a sign up sheet in the narthex. Again this is the Hands Only CPR and a review of the AED for anyone who is interested in learning. It usually lasts about an hour and there is no test to take. This is meant for lay people to feel comfortable in an emergency situation. We are blessed to have Matt & Hilary Killeen offer this class at no cost to us as Advent members! Please join us. ♥ Caregivers Support Group will meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 1pm, which is March 12th. If you are caring for a spouse, a parent or loved one, there is help out there. Please join us and share your struggles with others who will understand and support you. ♥ The Prayer Labyrinth will be set up on the last Thursday of the month, March 28th, which will be Maundy Thursday this year from 6pm-9pm. Please join us before or after the 7pm worship service. No need to sign up, just come and pray! ♥ Parkinson Support Group will meet on the last Wednesday of the month, March 27th at 7pm at Emeritus at Mentor. Any questions, call Michele Ratica at 440-679-1594. ♥ I want to wish Pastor Steve and my entire Advent Family a most blessed Easter! Don’t forget, “When in doubt, Point to the Cross!”

Your servant in Christ, —Christine Noble, Parish Nurse
