The Boeing Classic has raised nearly $6 million for Virginia Mason Medical Center and other local charities. BY RAYMOND L. CONNER

WELCOME TO THE 12TH YEAR of the award-winning Boeing Classic. On behalf of the tens of thousands of Boeing employees in the state of Washington who make up roughly half of Boeing’s global workforce, it is my privilege to invite you to share in the tradition of this world-class event in our backyard. As we’ve come to expect, the PGA TOUR Champions comprises some of the sport’s top talent and presents an annual highlight for golf fans in the Northwest. 2016 is an incredible year for The Boeing Company and the people who work here. We are celebrating a very exciting, humbling anniversary — our 100th birthday. To that end, Boeing has a number of events planned this year to celebrate the spirit, dedication and skill of our team during this centennial year while also creating exhibits and opportunities we hope will prepare, inspire and empower a new generation of aerospace visionaries. Part of Boeing’s DNA is not just designing and building incredible airplanes, but also giving back to the communities where our employees live and work. The Boeing Classic is part of that effort. Since its start in 2005, the Classic has raised nearly $6 million to support research at Virginia Mason Medical Center and endeavors at other local charities. The Classic also pays tribute to our servicemen and women through Military Appreciation Day, held on Championship Sunday, the final day of the tournament. We hope you will join us in thanking these dedicated men and women for all they do to protect our freedoms and our way of life. As we at Boeing celebrate this special year, we are grateful to our supporters and welcome this opportunity to build strong relationships and healthy communities in the places we call home.

Part of Boeing’s DNA is not just designing and building incredible airplanes, but also giving back to the communities where our employees live and work. The Boeing Classic is part of that effort.

Many reasons to celebrate And so many people to thank. The 2016 Boeing Classic couldn’t happen without your incredible support. BY MICHELLE DELANCY & LARRY DICKENSON

WELCOME TO THE 12TH ANNUAL BOEING CLASSIC. We are proud to be a part of the incredible sports experience here in the great Pacific Northwest and honored that you are here to enjoy the excitement of watching the legends of golf. We look forward to thrilling, competitive play from our 81 PGA TOUR Champions professionals as they take on the scenic yet challenging TPC Snoqualmie Ridge course. The Boeing Classic has a lot to celebrate in 2016. Our title sponsor, Boeing, marks its 100th anniversary this year. We have exciting new players on the PGA TOUR Champions who have recently turned the qualifying age of 50 years young, such as John Daly and Billy Mayfair. Our player field includes seven Boeing Classic Champions: Tom Kite (2006 & 2008); Loren Roberts (2009), Bernhard Langer (2010), Mark Calcavecchia (2011), Jay Don Blake (2012), Scott Dunlap (2014) and Billy Andrade (2015). Your contributions to the Boeing Classic continue to help those in need while also funding researchers who save their lives. In the event’s 11-year history, nearly $6 million has been raised for the Benaroya Research Institute (BRI) at Virginia Mason, the Heart Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center and additional Greater Seattle charities. To say that we are grateful for your support as spectators, sponsors, volunteers and players is an understatement. Each of you is an integral part of what makes the Boeing Classic one of the best PGA Tour Champions events and for that, WE THANK YOU!

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS_

Welcome from PGA tour champions We thank the sponsors, spectators, staff and volunteers for helping the Boeing Classic make an impact on the course and off. BY GREGORY T. MCLAUGHLIN

ON BEHALF OF PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS, it’s a pleasure to welcome you to the 2016 Boeing Classic. PGA TOUR Champions celebrates its 37th season this year, and many of the game’s legends have descended on the Greater Seattle area this week to compete in one of our best events of the year. Since 2005, the Boeing Classic has established itself as a premier stop on the annual PGA TOUR Champions schedule. Major championship winners Bernhard Langer, Tom Kite and Mark Calcavecchia have won this prestigious title, with fan favorite Billy Andrade claiming the second of three career wins in the event’s 2015 edition. TPC Snoqualmie Ridge is a wonderful venue on which to conduct the Boeing Classic. The course is popular for players and fans alike, as evidenced by the nearly 1,000 volunteers who put forth time and effort to make last year’s event such a success. In 2016, the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions and the Web.com Tour will continue to focus on charity, with the success of the Boeing Classic continuing to extend well beyond the golf course. Since 2005, this tournament has made a significant economic and charitable impact, with nearly $6 million going to support the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason in Seattle — a worldwide leader in autoimmune disease research — and additional Greater Seattle charities. We value our partnership with Boeing and the commitment it has made to PGA TOUR Champions, and we appreciate the spectators, the volunteers, the media and the members at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge for their engagement and efforts in making this tournament a success. Thank you for your support of PGA TOUR Champions. Enjoy a great week of competition and the many other exciting activities it offers.

TPC Snoqualmie Ridge is a wonderful venue on which to conduct the Boeing Classic. The course is popular for players and fans alike, as evidenced by the nearly 1,000 volunteers who put forth time and effort to make last year’s event such a success.

Tour de Force Bernhard Langer is the embodiment of peak performance.

B

NORTHWEST ORIENTED

ERNHARD LANGER’S PGA TOUR CAREER was Hall of Fame material even though it included only three official victories. It just happens that two of them came at the Masters Tournament — in 1985 and 1993. As a PGA TOUR Champions player, the stoic German has won a bit more often. His 28 career victories rank third all time, trailing only Hale Irwin (45) and Lee Trevino (29). To say Langer has been a study in consistency is nothing short of understatement, considering a record three Charles Schwab Cup titles, a record five Player of the Year honors, a record seven Arnold Palmer Awards, and four Byron Nelson Awards for leading the Tour in scoring average. ➔

In seven appearances at the Boeing Classic, 2010 champion Bernhard Langer has never finished lower than 15th and has won more than $770,000 in prize money.

BERNHARD LANGER

Since turning 50 in August 2007, Langer has recorded 125 top-10 finishes in 178 starts. In baseball terms, he’s batting .702 for his career, which puts to shame any PGA TOUR record Tiger Woods established. Like all the greats, Langer has done perhaps his best work in the senior major championships. In June, he claimed his third consecutive Constellation Senior Players Championship title at the famed Philadelphia Cricket Club, becoming the first player in PGA TOUR Champions history to win multiple major titles in three separate seasons (2010, 2014, 2016). The only other players to win multiple majors in two seasons are Gary Player (1987, 1988) and Jack Nicklaus (1990, 1991/ three wins). “You know, when you keep winning, confidence breeds success and success breeds confidence,” Langer says of his remarkable consistency. “When you’re constantly up there, it’s like when Tiger was up there almost every time he teed it up. He’s used to that.”

“You know, when you keep winning, confidence breeds success and success breeds confidence. When you’re constantly up there, it’s like when Tiger was up there almost every time he teed it up. He’s used to that.”

Langer says he is now accustomed to the pressure of being in the hunt nearly every weekend. “If you don’t do that for five or 10 years,” he explains, “you don’t quite feel as comfortable, I think, because you’re almost like a fish out of water in a sense.” A view across the landscape of PGA TOUR Champions events provides ample evidence to suggest Langer might be the best player in Tour history. His name sits atop the list of career money leaders for many of the 26 annual stops. One of those events is the Boeing Classic, where the 58-year-old has accrued $771,857 in earnings in seven starts. At TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, Langer has recorded seven top-15 finishes, including a victory in 2010, when he posted a recordtying 18-under-par total for a three-shot victory over fellow World Golf Hall of Fame member Nick Price. The Boeing Classic win came roughly one month after Langer claimed the U.S. Senior

Open title at nearby Sahalee Country Club in an epic battle with local favorite Fred Couples, which prompted many to call Langer’s tear through the Pacific Northwest a “Seattle Slam.” Last year, Langer narrowly missed picking up win No. 2 at the Boeing Classic after he birdied the final two holes to post 8 under par, only to fall one shot shy of a scrambling Billy Andrade, who put on a strong short-game display over the final nine holes for a closing 73 and his first PGA TOUR Champions individual title. Langer is back at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge this week to try again for win No. 2 at the Boeing Classic. With 18 of his 21 career rounds in this event recorded under par, he will be the prohibitive favorite in one of the year’s strongest fields. On his heels will be a slew of talented PGA TOUR Champions stars, including Andrade, World Golf Hall of Fame member Colin Montgomerie and Tour newcomer John Daly.

WINNING ATTITUDE Going into the 2016 Boeing Classic, Bernhard Langer has amassed 28 PGA TOUR Champions titles. He trails only Hale Irwin and Lee Trevino in that category.

The long-hitting Daly will no doubt be a fan favorite on Friday morning of tournament week, with his flamboyant outfits, towering 300-yard drives and exuberant fist pumps. But if you’re looking for an odds favorite, look at Langer, who will enter the week with an eye toward moving even deeper into the game’s storied record books.

CHARLES SCHWAB CUP

Playoff Fever NEW SEASON-ENDING FORMAT OPENS UP COMPETITION FOR THE CHARLES SCHWAB CUP.

I

N ADDITION TO UNDERGOING a subtle name change from the Champions Tour to PGA TOUR Champions,

pro golf’s senior circuit this year added a season-ending playoff system similar to the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. The inaugural Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs will incorporate three tournaments — two of them new to the tour — to determine a points champion who receives a $1 million bonus. The first is the new PowerShares QQQ Championship in Thousand Oaks, California, in late October. The second, the Dominion Charity Classic, will take place in early November in Richmond, Virginia. Survivors of the first two playoff tournaments will meet at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, the tour’s traditional season-ending event, in Scottsdale, Arizona, in November.

HOW IT WORKS

72

top money winners compete at the PowerShares QQQ Championship.

54

players advance to the Dominion Charity Classic.

36

players advance to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, where points will be tiered based on playoff standings so every remaining player has a mathematical chance of winning the Charles Schwab Cup.

The long-haired kid from Dardanelle, Arkansas, entered the week as ninth alternate and left as the most unlikely victor in major championship history, using 300-yard tee shots and fistpumping adrenaline to overwhelm Crooked Stick Golf Club and win the PGA Championship. Daly validated the surprise breakthrough with followup wins at the 1992 B.C. Open and the 1994 BellSouth Classic before cementing his legend status with a playoff victory at the 1995 Open Championship at St. Andrews.

At the age of 29, Daly was a two-time major champion. And now, at the age of 50, he and his trademark Loudmouth brand pants are the toast of PGA TOUR Champions events. A pair of top-20 finishes to open his PGA TOUR Champions career in May gave promise to new life for Daly, who instantly became a fan favorite at each event. At this week’s Boeing Classic, Daly returns to Washington state to compete for the first time since he played in the 1998 PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club. It’s expected that his loyal fans will follow. Welcome back to Seattle, John.

Boeing Classic champions “It’s more of a mindset and I just have fun with this,” he told The Providence Journal earlier this year. “I’m going to hit bad shots and make bogeys and double bogeys, but I just let it roll off my shoulder instead of making it life and death.” The approach seems to be working. Last year’s Boeing Classic title was his first victory in a PGA Tour Champions individual stroke-play event. Earlier in the year, Andrade teamed with Joe Durant to win the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge. He capped off his breakout season in November by winning the Charles Schwab Cup Tournament, beating Langer again, this time in a playoff. The three victories helped the Rhode Island native earn more than $1.5 million in 2015, making it his richest season in professional golf. In more than two decades on the PGA TOUR, Andrade never won more than $1.3 million in a season. The Boeing Classic victory was hardly a slam dunk. His score of 207 tied the highest winning stroke total in the tournament’s history, and he had to fend off a challenge by Langer, the tour’s reigning ubermensch. On the par-4 fourth hole during the final round, Andrade was lying 6 and still off the green. Had he not holed his downhill

Thanks largely to that remarkable chip, Andrade won the 2015 Boeing Classic by a stroke over Bernhard Langer. Andrade, whose easygoing manner makes him popular with spectators, says his approach at PGA TOUR Champions events is different from how he approached tournaments on the PGA TOUR.

He called the save “the greatest 7 I’ve ever made in my life.” Despite the triple bogey, Andrade never lost the lead on Championship Sunday and he held off Langer, who missed an eagle putt on the 18th hole that would have tied for the lead. Langer called Andrade’s calm perseverance through adversity “the sign of a champion.” “It’s something I’ll never forget,” Andrade said of Langer’s generous remark.

SOUTHERN DESCENT THIS 554-YARD PAR FIVE is an impressive starting hole. Bunkers come into play on each shot, so accuracy is essential. A well-placed second shot on the left side of the fairway facilitates a clear approach to the guarded green. Proper club selection sets up a strong birdie opportunity.

BACKYARD THE 410-YARD SECOND HOLE is a challenging par four. With a generous landing area, the hole’s only real obstacle on the tee shot is a bunker on the right side of the fairway. Still, the tricky, undulating green doesn’t yield many birdies. 2016 Official Tournament Magazine

THE RIDGE THIS LONG PAR FOUR is rated the No. 1

handicap hole on the course. At 462 yards, it requires a solid drive if a player hopes to reach the green in two. Deep bunkers front the green to the left and a grassy swale awaits any shot drifting right. It plays into the prevailing wind and slightly uphill.

TWIN FIRS THIS 426-YARD PAR FOUR presents a stunning downhill tee shot. Fir trees and bunkers guard both sides of the fairway and a creek cuts across it at the bottom of the hill. The green is heavily guarded short right and long, making proper club selection imperative.

YEARS FALL CITY NAMED FOR ITS VIEW of Fall City and the Redmond-Fall City valley, this long par four accepts a robust tee shot. A wide fairway and generous downhill landing area allow the ball to funnel toward the green, but a steep cliff drops off left, so be sure to avoid going too far to that side. The downhill approach plays shorter than it seems as the ball releases toward the hole. 58 / B O E I N G C L A S S I C

CASCADE THE APTLY NAMED 226-YARD PAR THREE

offers a postcard view of the Cascade Mountains from the tee box. Don’t let the vista distract you from a challenging downhill shot to a heavily guarded green. With bunkers short left and long right, playing the ball from right to left is the safer bet.

THE NARROWS DECEPTION ONE OF THE SHORTEST PAR FOURS on the course, 375-yard Deception presents several challenges appropriate to its name, such as a small lake in front of the tee box, an elevated fairway, fairway bunkers and deep greenside bunkers.

THIS 529-YARD PAR FIVE is lengthened by a narrow landing area and a lake protecting the front and left side of the green. A well-placed second shot to the right of the fairway allows the player to attack the pin, using the full length of the green for safety. Going for the flag in two is risky because water or sand guard all sides of the green.

Learn more about us at www.capgemini.com SCREAMING EAGLE THIS 207-YARD PAR THREE over water and bunkers will test even the strongest nerves. With a carry of 196 yards over Eagle Lake and an additional 8 yards over the greenfront bunker, the 9th can ruin a decent round with one poorly executed swing. BUNKER HILL A 353-YARD UPHILL HOLE, this is the shortest par four on the course, with deep fairway bunkers coming into play off the tee. A precise long iron or fairway wood is the safest play. Deep bunkers also protect an undulating green. BOEINGCLASSIC.COM

THIS 484-YARD PAR FOUR is long and tough, with a series of bunkers protecting the fairway right. A tee shot to the left sets up a long approach to a two-tiered green, which is guarded by deep bunkers on the left. A two-putt par is a good result at this challenging hole.

THE BLACK TEE BOX on this par four offers a view eastward toward famous Snoqualmie Falls. A great tee shot goes right of a series of fairway bunkers protecting the left side. The two-tiered green demands a precise approach to set up a birdie try. Downhill putts can be slick.

Cascade mountain range frame this 210yard, downhill par three, one of the most spectacular holes on the course. Bunkers lurk short and left of the green, so a rightto-left tee shot will release to the hole, setting up a birdie opportunity. 62 / B O E I N G C L A S S I C

THE 448-YARD PAR-FOUR 14th is the signature hole of this Jack Nicklaus course, featuring an elevation drop of 80 feet from tee to green. The horseshoe-shaped fairway can be shortened dramatically with a risky tee shot over the canyon. A 14-foot-deep bunker guards the small green and should be avoided at all costs. Hit a precise approach shot to set up a chance at birdie. BOEINGCLASSIC.COM

from allergies that occur when the body’s immune system overreacts to a foreign substance such as food, pollen or animal dander. While allergies can be mild in some people, they can compromise quality of life and even be life threatening for others. Such is the case for Aaron and Justin Newton. While most kids only take their backpacks to school, Aaron and Justin have carried their backpacks everywhere since they were 4 and 7 years old. The backpacks are filled with epinephrine auto injectors and Benadryl because the Newton boys have life-threatening peanut allergies. Aaron, who also carries an asthma inhaler, has even experienced cross-contamination reactions after eating restaurant food. The boys’ mom, Lori Newton, says having children with food allergies requires constant vigilance. “You must always be prepared by carrying medicines, knowing what food will be served, having good alternatives for foods and being hyperaware of your surroundings,” she says. “Living with a food allergy is different,” adds Justin. “You can’t eat everything and you have to look at labels to see if the food is safe.” With an eye on the day they can leave their backpacks at home, Aaron and Justin participate in allergy
