Our 20th National Specialty Judges, Introducing:

JOHNNY SHOEMAKER, Las Vegas, NV Toys, Non-Sporting (specialties)/ Group IV: Manchester Terriers, Standard Manchester Terriers

I have been in the sport of dog shows since 1966. I bred Poodles until 16 years ago when I began judging. I bred all three varieties of Poodles including Best in Show, Group and Specialty winners. I currently judge two groups in the United States. Those groups are Toy and Non-Sporting and I have applied for 13 Sporting dogs. I also judge Junior Showmanship, Miscellaneous Breeds and Best in Show. I have judged in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China and Mexico. I have judged many shows in the United States with some shows being Morris and Essex, AKC/Eukanuba dog show three times, Poodle Club of America (I am judging Best of Breed in 2016), which will be my second assignment, and the National Dog Show that is televised on Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. I have also judged Nationals in various breeds. I love judging and very much love the dogs and the wonderful exhibitors whose dedication to their breeds is very much appreciated. I have served as show chairperson for my breed club where I also held various offices including President. I am a member of various poodle clubs including Poodle Club of America and the all-breed clubs of Redwood Empire KC and Morris and Essex. I introduced the Pee Wee Special Attraction to the AKC Delegate body (I am an AKC Delegate for the Redwood Empire Dog Club and serve on the Dog Show Rules Committee) and it is now beginning to be very popular in the United States. I believe that we must keep trying to attract young children into our sport and the Pee Wee Special Attraction is a good start. I know you have had the Pee Wee event in Canada for many years and we hope to be as successful with it as you have been in Canada. My professional career, since 1975, has been in the financial sector beginning in 1975 with Merrill Lynch and then to EH Hutton, which was acquired by Shearson Lehman and then became Smith Barney. During these years I was in various management positions at each firm. I retired in 2008 but continue to work part time at the investment firm of HighTower Advisors in Las Vegas, NV, where I have lived since 2008. I previously lived in California where I also worked (while also working at my main profession) with Jack Bradshaw Dog Show Superintendents for 25 years. During those years as a superintendent I attended dog shows almost every weekend. I got to see some wonderful dogs of all breeds that have helped me to understand many of the breeds. I also officiated as superintendent at many breed nationals. I currently live in Las Vegas, NV, with my husband of 25 years and two wonderful Poodles. I love our sport and hope to continue in this sport for many more years.

MONSON, Dena – Puppy Sweepstakes

I have been a professional groomer since the 1960’s. Poodles were my breed of interest, and Bichons came into my life in 1993. Besides their lovely temperaments, I like the idea that you could walk a Bichon show dog down the street and people wouldn’t look at you funny, and then say Ewwww. A nice pet trim and a show trim look very much the same to the average person, and I liked that! I have had a modest breeding career (less than 10 litters), but have finished many Champions in Canada and the USA, and have been the groomer for many other top winners. I am mostly retired now, but still involved with a great group of West Coast breeders and exhibitors. I have enjoyed very much what I call my “doggie hobby”.

Carolyne Cybulsky – Junior Handling

Bichon: "Robbie" MBIS MBPIS BISS Can GCH. AOM Am GCH. Luvit Dalnavert A Movado Sportivo

In 2001/2002 I was the Top Junior in my Zone for Manitoba showing my Bichon of course! I alternated between showing my Bichons and my Goldens. I started showing in Juniors when I was 4 years old, and finished at the age of 18 years. I handled for my parents, Bernice and Brian Lucas of Dalnavert Kennels, and also for a long time friend in Florida Linda Ross of Luvit Bichons. I learned to groom a Bichon by myself by observing and attending a grooming seminar out west and with trial and error I learned how to scissor my Bichon. It has taken dedication and hard work to earn the awards I have achieved with my dogs, as you can see in my picture with Robbie It has been very exciting showing Robbie. He has earned several Best in Shows, Group 6 Best in Specialty Show, Group 1’st, Purina National Group 2 qualifying for Crufts 2 years in a row. He qualified for the 2nd year by winning Award of Merit at the Bichon Frise Club of America this year! I win some, I lose some, I hold my head high regardless. Showing dogs is my happy place, and helping the future generation of young handlers learn and grow is such an honour.
