My good friends in Christ Jesus, Today we move ahead in our reading of Matthew’s Gospel. Last week we read about Jesus walking on the water and the disciples’ confession of faith that Jesus is the Son of God. If we were reading Matthew’s entire Gospel, we would have read about Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees about Jewish purity laws. Jesus argues that it is not what goes into us that makes us unclean; he is referring to the strict Jewish dietary rules. Instead our words and our actions—what comes out of us—make us unclean because they emerge from a heart that is unclean. Knowing about Jesus’ debate with the Pharisees helps us to understand today’s Gospel. In fact the story heightens the surprise and shock we feel as we hear Jesus’ exchange with the Canaanite woman. The woman, who is not Jewish, approaches Jesus, requesting that he heal her demon-possessed daughter. At first Jesus ignores her; he says nothing. The disciples ask Jesus to send her away, and Jesus agrees, remarking that he was sent to minister to the Jews alone. The woman persists, paying homage to Jesus, and yet Jesus denies her request again. He even insults her, using a Jewish word of derision for Gentiles, “dog.” But the woman cleverly turns Jesus’ insult into an affirmation of faith. Only then does Jesus grant her request and heal her daughter. Jesus’ unresponsiveness to this woman may strike us as uncharacteristic or shocking. Yet in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus’ ministry is directed primarily to the people of Israel. At only a very few points, such as the one found in today’s Gospel, do we find Jesus anticipating the later Christian ministry to the rest of the world. Behind Matthew’s text we can hear this early Christian community’s struggle to understand how God’s selection of Israel is consistent with two events: Israel’s rejection of Jesus and the Gentiles’ acceptance of Jesus. Just as Jesus was surprised by the faith expressed by the Canaanite woman, so too the first Christians were surprised that the Gentiles would receive the salvation God offered through Christ. In today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans, we hear the apostle Paul considering this same concern. The faith that the Canaanite woman expresses is an affirmation of and confidence in God’s abundant mercy. Yes, salvation comes through Israel, but it overflows for the benefit of all. Thanks be to God. Fr. Jim

We currently have $2,065.176.00 pledged. Out of the amount that has been pledged, we have received $385.776, which is 36%. This means we have reached our goal of $2 million! Thank you to everyone who has continued to pledge to the campaign. With these additional pledges we may be able to add some additional items to the campaign. Our priority is updating the heating and air conditioning system in the church. With your help, this dream may be possible!

You may have seen some flyers in church telling about Joni Eickhoff, one of our parishioners and a dear friend of mine, who needed a stem cell transplant to extend her life and because of the circumstances it was not covered by insurance. In addition, there are several special events for the RCIA candidates. These meetings do two things: teach the candidates about the Catholic Church, and allow sponsors, candidates, and team members alike to share their faith experiences. Each meeting focuses on a specific topic, such as the Scripture, social teaching of the Church, or the meaning of the Eucharist. The process ends with baptisms, confirmations, and first communions in a beautiful ceremony the night before Easter. Today Readings First Reading — Thus says the LORD: “Stand firm in justice; do what is right” (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7). Psalm — O God, let all the nations praise you! (Psalm 67). Second Reading — The gifts and the calling of God are unable to be revoked (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32). Gospel — Jesus told the Canaanite woman of great faith, “It shall be done as you wish” (Matthew 15:21-28). CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME “Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a manner that will cause everyone— not just the Chosen People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. Holy Father’s Prayer August 2017 Artists: That artists of our time, through their ingenuity, may help everyone discover the beauty of creation. Word of Life “The effectiveness of our commitment to peace depends on our understanding of human life. If we want peace, let us defend life!” Pope Benedict XVI, Morning Address, September 15, 2012, Apostolic Journey to Lebanon © 2012 Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Once the way was cleared for additional Eucharistic Prayers, those who were appointed to compose them had to look deep within the tradition for sources. One of the prescriptions for new prayers was that they be “unencumbered by useless repitition.” From the start, therefore, the writers knew that the old Roman Canon, which had the priest bowing and crossing himself many times in a long, complex prayer, was not a model of simplicity. Aside from the prayers treasured by Eastern Christians, there is an obvious model from ancient Rome. For about a hundred years now, the historical text “Apostolic Tradition” has shed some light for us on the shadowy shape of worship in the early church. In it, its author, Hippolytus, took care to record the actual texts of worship used at the time. He himself has a shadow side, since he was so ardently conservative in his tastes that he broke ties with the Bishop of Rome and became first in the line of history’s antipopes. At the eleventh hour, however, he reconciled with his enemies and actually died a martyr. In fact, he was shipped off to the Sardinian mines as a slave with the true pope as his companion in chains. Because his tussle with the pope was over theological innovations and not liturgical texts, we are sure that his account of the style of Eucharistic Prayer in the third century is accurate. It forms the core of today’s Eucharistic Prayer II. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

3 year Campaign

Trinity Lutheran Church is hosting an ongoing GriefShare support group. This is a 13-week seminar support group for people grieving the death of someone close. It’s a place where they can be around people who understand how they feel and the pain of their loss. They will learn valuable information that will help them through this difficult time in their life. Many grieving people find they are only beginning the work of healing when friends or family have returned to their daily life routines. Past participants have related how helpful the information and follow-up discussions were to them. New sessions will begin on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 6:30 pm and Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 1:00 pm. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 212 W. 12th Street in Grand Island. The session is free thanks to Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home underwriting the cost of the materials. GriefShare meets weekly and the content is Christ-centered and biblical. The video seminar series features some of the nation’s foremost Christian experts on grief and recovery topics as seen from a biblical perspective. These video seminars are combined with support group discussion, by a trained facilitator. Please feel free to call the church office at (308) 382-0753 if you have any questions or would like more information about the GriefShare seminar. Eunice McCarty Director of Family Life Ministries

A reminder that this is a 3-year campaign. You are welcome to make your payments weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually or however you prefer. We will have specially marked “Capital Campaign” envelopes in your envelope packet that you receive in the mail. These will temporarily take the place of the “Building Fund” envelopes. If you do not receive envelopes in the mail it may be because we do not have you registered in the parish. Please go to our parish website under the “Contact us” button to register online. We also have special envelopes available in the pamphlet rack at the entrance of the church. Please write your name on the envelope so that we can help you keep track of your offering. We will be sending periodic letters to remind you of your pledge and keep you up-to-date with the campaign. Many thanks to all who have participated. If we exceed our goal – we will certainly put it to good use trying to better serve God and God’s people here at the Cathedral and in the world around us. Thank you for your prayers and support of your parish.
