C e n t r a l P a r k - T h e Te n n i s P l a y e r s C l u b

The Baseline Newsletter November 2 16 This month I’m going to play the new baby card and keep this article short. If it appears that I’m even less coherent than usual, well, again, new baby. There are two things I’d like to cover this month: the leave of absence policy and the LED lighting. 

The discretion to grant a leave of absence rests with the Board, and the Bylaws allow a leave of absence for “a job transfer, educational sabbatical, medical disability, financial hardship, or other justifiable reason.” Likely, due to this relatively new policy, we’ve seen an increase in the number of requests for leaves of absence. To date, the Board has not been very stringent in applying these guidelines and has approved just about every leave of absence request submitted. But now we have 25 memberships on leave of absence status, and we’ve decided that we need to tighten up the policy for granting leave of absence requests.

OTHER NEWS 2...….…….…..Important Dates 3………....Manager Miscellany

Starting the first of next year, the Board will put the following policy in place:  The maximum number of members allowed to be on leaves of absence at any time will be capped at roughly 5% of the total number of equity memberships. Since the total number of equity memberships is 500, the cap will be about 25 leaves of absence.  If we are at the cap, any new requests will be put on a waiting list. When a member currently on a leave of absence returns, the Board will then evaluate any requests on the list.  The Board will be stricter in prioritizing leave of absence requests. Generally, requests based on involuntary considerations (medical reasons, financial hardship, etc.) will be given priority over requests based on voluntary considerations (decision to travel extensively, etc.).

Leave of Absence. A few years ago we updated the Bylaws to expand the Club’s leave of absence policy. Basically, the new policy allows members who are granted a leave of absence, if there’s a waiting list to join the club, to retain their equity and suspend their club privileges for anywhere from six months to two years.

LED Lighting. Based on the positive overall feedback we’ve received about the playability of the LED lighting on Court 5, the Board has decided to upgrade all of the existing court lighting to LED. Once the lighting contractor confirms the anticipated completion date, we will let everyone know.

MANAGER’S MISCELLANY Holiday season already?! October was busy enough with the Club tournament (results on Page 8), the LED lighting test (hopefully you have tried out court 5), the Halloween Cup Spectacular, and the Halloween Family Funfest. November proves to be just as busy, bringing us the Junior Club Championships (Nov. 3-6), the Jr. Team Awards Celebration (Nov. 6), and an opportunity to load up on CPTC logo wear for holiday surprises. Laurie has found some great clothing items and has brought in samples for you to place your order. Do it early so we can make sure to have them available for under the Christmas tree! And, how about those new doors? The process took us longer than we expected, but patience paid off and we have a great new entrance. Thank you for working with us while we re-routed traffic and dealt with some cold, noisy days in the clubhouse. Now we will start the painting project; so, bear with us as we finish up this project once and for all. With Fall and Winter come the unusual weather patterns. For future reference, if you call the Club and our voicemail does not pick up, that usually means we are without power. We will do our best to send out notices and keep you up-to-date of the Club status, but depending on how wide the outage has spread, we may not be able to do that. If you have a junior in our program, we usually follow the snow schedule of the schools, as well as try to get notice to you if there is a cancellation. If we do cancel and make up days are available, just reach out to Chad and he can let you know what the options may be. Hopefully, you saw the email about our new Marketing person. Samantha Millard has returned to work with Laurie and our team to bring us to the next level of Member Services. We look forward to her creativity and ideas, and welcome her back! If you would like to contact any of our staff, you can find our contact information at http://www.centralparktennisclub.com/contact-us. As always, a few reminders: This time of year it seems people are very aware of tennis violations. Please remember, the tennis policies are set by the Tennis Committee and the staff is asked to enforce them. It is not up to the front desk or anyone on the administrative team to determine if you are in violation of the policy. If you have comments or would like to see a policy changed or a violation removed, we have forms that you can submit with your request. They can be found http://cdn.cybergolf.com/images/1085/REQUEST-TO-REMOVE-VIOLATION.pdf and http://cdn.cybergolf.com/images/1085/POLICY-CHANGE-FORM.pdf. The Tennis Committee meets the second Monday of every month (unless otherwise noted) and all meetings are open to members. USTA Teams: Overflow courts – for the USTA season we have quite a few matches back to back; it would be best to check with the front desk BEFORE YOUR MATCH to see what courts are open in case you need to play longer – we will not kick members off their court and you should expect the match to be moved, unless you have confirmation from the person owning the next court time that you can continue to play on that court. Also, proper tennis etiquette for entering a court is to wait for the correct court time (do not go out early and sit on the court) and to wait for the point in progress to be finished. This includes lessons as well. With all of the entrances we have, disrupting someone’s game should not be an issue –so please be aware of when you are entering onto someone else’s court time. We will be open Thanksgiving Day until 1 pm – walk on courts for Friday, November 25 can be made after 10 am on November 24. Enjoy and be healthy! Julie Wheadon Club Manager

COMMITTEE REPORTS FACILITIES | CHAIR KRISTEN GROBSTOCK The Facilities Committee will now meet the first Thursday of each month to discuss overall Club maintenance, special projects, and planning for the upcoming budget year. They are pleased with the door project and will now work with management to schedule clubhouse interior painting. The on-going water issue in the Reed building and New building are being addressed with a water-tight caulking product as well as contacting our roofing company to troubleshoot. The Committee performed an interior walk through in October and will meet again Thursday, November 3rd.

MEMBERSHIP | CHAIR KIM SKORUPA We are so happy to welcome Samantha back to the Club!! With the combined efforts of Laurie and Samantha, I can’t wait to see our waitlist grow!! USTA Adult league will start up in January with the 40+ league starting first. Please check the front desk for a signup sheet if you are looking for a team. Our next Membership Committee will be on November 21st @ 5:30.

CUPS | CHAIR CHRISTINE GARNETT - SUBMITTED BY MARILYN PEDERSEN Central Park teams are leading the pack this year! The majority of our teams are ranked in the top third. One example is Emerald 1, ranked #7 out of 31 total teams as of this writing.

This month’s “CUPS Curio” is the subject of late arrival. Should a player arrive 5 minutes or less past the start time, the penalty is a loss of toss plus one game. Should a player arrive at 10:01 minutes or more, the late arrival constitutes a default for the tardy team. In the event of a default before the court time begins, court 3 will be defaulted first.

4

COMMITTEE REPORTS FINANCE | CHAIR MARTY MCCURRY The financial results for the month of September were good. Net Ordinary Income (before Depreciation, and Interest) for the month was $39,161 and year-to-date $417,369; budget for the month was $31,112 and year-to-date budget $251,541, yielding a surplus for the month of $8,049 and year to date surplus of $165,829. The Club’s financial position remains sound with Total Cash of $438,431, and an excellent current ratio of over 3.5 to 1. We are in the budgeting process for next year, and are encouraged by the initial draft by management. Furthermore, a special thanks is in order for Russ Nomi for spearheading our potential conversion to LED lighting for the courts, and to Steve Coleman for the implementation of the potential conversion. The potential energy savings are significant. The Board approved increased contributions to employee pension plan beginning in 2017. Central Park Tennis Club continues to be fully subscribed with 500 members, and with a wait-list to join of 25. Again, due to the strong demand, the Equity Member Initiation Fee remains at $6,000. The Finance Committee met October 19th, and the next committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday November 9th at 5:45pm.

TENNIS | NANCY GOLDBERG What is a No-Show? Hopefully you’re aware that you can’t make a court reservation and then just not show up to use it. Makes sense, as it takes the court out of circulation for the rest of us to use. The Club imposes a monetary fine for the second No-Show violation in a calendar year. What can you do to ensure you aren’t a No-Show?     

Check in with the front desk when you arrive at the club. If no one is at the front desk, call from your court to let them know you arrived. Let the front desk know if you are switching courts. If the camera shows no one on your court, you may be counted as a No-Show. Don’t depend on the video camera at the front desk to verify you were there. It only shows bodies; it isn’t precise enough to show faces. Call the front desk if you will be more than 15 minutes late to your court time. No-show penalties begin after 15 minutes if there is no notification. However, if you call the front desk, the court will be held for you for up to 30 minutes from court time.

If you have any questions about the policy or your particular situation, ask Arica, Front Desk Supervisor at [email protected].

PRO’S COURT Winter Tennis in the PNW It’s that time of year again. Break out your jackets and umbrellas and crank up the heaters for me on court 6! As you well know, the winter months in Seattle can be a long, cold, and wet affair. Personally, I can’t think of a better activity than hitting some tennis balls with friends. Fortunately for us, we are lucky enough to have 12 warm indoor courts! What an advantage and opportunity to improve our skills. When I was growing up, my tennis coach would always tell me that the winter months separated good players from great players. It is easier to sit around and wait for the sun to reappear than to get out there and put some hard work in. With our 12 courts, it is the perfect chance for high school players to perfect their technique in between seasons and for USTA teams to learn new tactics while opposing teams struggle to book court time. For me, the winter months were not a big season for traveling and playing tournaments. Instead, I would focus on improving one or two of my weaknesses. I could always look back in March and think about how far my game had progressed. I would love to see that progress from all of you. So here is my challenge to you during these winter months: Grab someone you don’t know very well and play some sets. Burn off that turkey and pumpkin pie with some cardio tennis. Enjoy some family time by teaching the game to your spouse or children. Practice that backhand slice on the ball machine. Sign up for lessons or junior team. Find a tournament in the area and go compete. Use this as an opportunity to get better while others’ racquets are collecting dust. -Ethan Vaughn

FITNESS COURT The Holidays are Fast Approaching! We are entering the time of year when a lot of Americans gain weight. It starts with Thanksgiving then the parties and celebrations get in full swing. The weight gain ends up to be only about a pound or two, according to studies, not the 7-10 we hear about; but it seems we hang onto it year after year, which can make it harder and harder to lose. The celebrations of the New Year as well as the Super Bowl may be one of the reasons that extra weight may be hard to get rid of. One study suggests that our resolutions to “eat healthier” is great but we don’t back off of the other food so we end up eating even more. The fact that we are eating healthy food clouds our vision to the reality of eating “too much”. With a little planning and preparation we can join in the festivities and merriment and still be able to zip our pants! Tips for a guilt free holiday season:      

Eat before you go to parties; arriving hungry sets us up to eat too much. Use a small plate and only fill it up once. Drink water throughout the evening; if drinking alcohol, have a glass of water between drinks. Pick your favorites and leave the rest. Move - plan activity into your day - put it on your calendar. Be mindful of what you are eating, taste it, chew it, ENJOY it. “ACTION IS THE FOUNDATIONAL KEY TO ALL SUCCESS” Charity Boot Camp WHEN: Sunday, November 20 TIME: 9:50am ENTRY FEE: A bag of non-perishable food items Family and friends WELCOME! Help us make the holidays a little brighter for those in need!
