The Baptism of the Lord SCHEDULE

CALLED TO SERVE

Sacrament of Reconciliation Confesión: Saturdays / Sábados................... 8:30 am Tuesday/martes......................... 6:00 pm

For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River.

Eucharistic Perpetual Adoration Adoración Perpetua del Santisimo 21st Day of the Month ............... 7:00 am .... until 6:15 am the following Morning. 21 dia del mes ............................ 7:00 am hasta las 6:15 am de la mañana siguiente.

John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him.

Sacrament of Baptism/Bautismo: Saturdays / Sábados................. 10:00 am

Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

L

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. January 10, 2016 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

ittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s Gospel highlights God’s mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restoring the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving the sinner through Jesus’ ministry. But before doing, Luke’s Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns programmed to measure worth by productivity, we instinctively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the practical challenges of our baptism. But today Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disciples are called to do. Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us into “beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our baptism.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP MEETING

BLESSING OF THE VEHICLES

The next meeting for the Women's Fellowship Group will be this Saturday, January 16, from 10:00 - 11:00 am. We will meet in the Conference Room of the Community Center. On the weekend of January 16-17, the priests and deacons of our parish would be glad to offer a blessing of your motor vehicle! We will meet you at the exits of each of the parking lots with holy water at hand. A donation for support of the homeless will be accepted. “I promise to be a good driver, to obey the laws of the road, and to thank God each day for the abundant blessing of owning a vehicle. I will graciously pray for errant drivers. Amen”
