The Automobile Industry – Markets on the Move.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, the much-expected and greatly hoped-for upturn on the international automobile markets in 2003 has failed to materialise. Only incentives – huge in some cases – have managed to keep the North American and European markets at a relatively high level. However, pricing measures are admittedly not the way to generate permanent growth and certainly not profitable growth. Consequently, all manufacturers and suppliers are concentrating their strategy plans and actions on boosting their own companies. This can only be done by expanding product ranges and creating technical innovations. But companies are also looking to the potential growth markets of tomorrow, particularly, of course, the Chinese and Eastern European markets. The 11th Annual Handelsblatt Conference will revolve around the search for growth segments in a sector which in recent years has again become more important for the economy as a whole. This increased importance is borne out by the industry's focus on China and Eastern Europe. But it is also essential not to lose sight of the overall supply chain and measures to optimise it further. This applies both to relations between automobile manufacturers and their suppliers as well as between manufacturers and dealers. Next year promises to bring an upturn. But, admittedly, no-one can rely on that. Only competent companies will be lucky and ride the tide of a good economic situation and only those who have significantly increased their competitiveness will be able to take advantage of that luck and tide. The 11th Annual Handelsblatt Conference will provide important guidance on these issues and present reports based on real experiences.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Willi Diez, Head of the Institute for Automobile Economics, Nürtingen University of Applied Sciences
