The Addicted Brain and New Treatment Frontiers Sixth Annual Aspen Brain Forum

May 18 – 20, 2016 · New York City The New York Academy of Sciences Conference Center

Presented by the Aspen Brain Forum Foundation, Science Translational Medicine, and the New York Academy of Sciences

Background and Significance Substance and alcohol-use disorders — characterized by continued, compulsive, stimulus-seeking behaviors despite serious negative physical, emotional, and social consequences — impose significant human health, economic, and legal burdens on society. Although research suggests that addiction is strongly related to neurobiological changes in the brain, implementation of neuroscience-based therapeutic strategies to address addiction is a relatively nascent development. As such, patients in need of treatment for addiction may not be receiving short- and long-term care that considers neurobiological, molecular, and/or genetic aspects of addiction. The Aspen Brain Forum Foundation, Science Translational Medicine, and the New York Academy of Sciences have organized a conference to address these important issues entitled, The Addicted Brain and New Treatment Frontiers. The conference will be presented at the New York Academy of Sciences Conference Center on May 18 – 20, 2016. This 2.5-day landmark event will have an important impact on our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in addiction and novel treatment strategies. This conference agenda was developed in close collaboration with expert scientific leadership from the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and an international group of leading scientists and physicians from treatment research centers and academic medical research institutions. The program will convene up to 300 participants from academic institutions, treatment centers, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. The aim is to better understand, prevent, and treat addiction. The organizers seek to enhance the recruitment and retention of early career and underrepresented minority investigators to this multidisciplinary area of research.

Major Scientific Themes The conference will explore the following topics:

o

Mechanisms of Neuroplasticity in Addiction

o

Adolescent Brain Development and Susceptibility in Addiction

o

Transcriptional and Epigenetic Mechanisms in Addiction

o

New Horizons for Treatment Strategies

o

Social, Economic, Political, and Legal Facets of Addiction

Presenting Partners The planning and execution of The Addicted Brain and New Treatment Frontiers is a collaborative partnership among the Aspen Brain Forum Foundation, the journal Science Translational Medicine, and The New York Academy of Sciences. Please see below for further details about each presenting partner organization.

The Aspen Brain Forum Foundation convened its first annual meeting in 2010 focused on Neurotechnology: Building Better Brains. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Aspen Brain Forum Foundation supports and produces scientific meetings covering topics ranging from neuroprosthetics to the developing human brain. The Foundation’s mission is to:  Organize, produce, and host an annual high-level meeting of international brain researchers, with our partner, the New York Academy of Sciences, leading to global collaborations and breakthroughs in world brain science.  Present and disseminate the most cutting-edge innovations in brain science.  Ally with large new initiatives, such as the American Brain Coalition, the American Brain Foundation, and One Mind for Research, to prevent and cure brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, autism, and depression, within a decade. Science Translational Medicine was launched in 2009 and publishes 12 – 16 peer-reviewed, full-length, original research articles per month. The goal of Science Translational Medicine is to promote human health by providing a forum for communicating the latest biomedical research findings from basic, translational, and clinical researchers from all established and emerging disciplines relevant to medicine. Despite 50 years of advances in our fundamental understanding of human biology and the emergence of powerful new technologies, the translation of this knowledge into effective new treatments and health measures has been slow. Science Translational Medicine seeks to publish articles that identify and fill the scientific knowledge gaps at the junction of basic research and medical application in order to accelerate the translation of this knowledge into new ways for preventing, diagnosing and treating human disease. To learn more about Science Translational Medicine, please visit stm.sciencemag.org. Founded in 1817, The New York Academy of Sciences is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the United States. The Academy is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization with a history of fostering new collaborations among key stakeholders and emerging experts in academia, industry, and government in order to drive advances in science, medicine, technology, innovation, and sustainability. Through our diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary scientific conferences and seminars, career development and public outreach programs, and global dissemination of the latest scientific breakthroughs via innovative print and electronic media, we engage an informed and diverse membership community that encompasses more than 20,000 individuals in 100 countries.
