Werner Weissflach ([email protected]) on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at 21:49:36 --------------------------------------------------------------------------comments: Hello Schneeberg Vets, and Gruess Gott ! My name is Werner and I am from Bischofsgruen. I knew many of you that were stationed on the hill in the 50s. I worked in a local Bakery and I emigrated to the US in 1960. Hard to believe, the only Boy who left Bisch, besides all your Wives and Girlfriends. Now I am retired and live in Fort Myers Fl. I visited Bischofsgruen every year since 2006 and will do so again in May of 2014. Here is my special request to all the Schneeberg Vets. Bischofsgruen is about to open their long planned Skimuseum. No, I am not asking for old skis and poles or money etc., but for any good, clear photos of you Guys, on skis, in military uniform. I would like the curator, Herr Fritz Frosch, former owner of the Jaegerhof,to set aside a section of a wall for your photos and your names,if you so desire. You were all part of that post war ski history of my hometown.Little did I know, that when I sat with you at "The Post" or "Cafe Kaiser" and admired your uniforms, that I would wear it too, from 1963 to 1965 in Fort Bragg NC. (82nd AB) Yor photos would be framed by antique snowshoes from the Adirondacks of NY, which I will donate for that purpose. You can send photos to me in Florida or I will give you the adress of Herrn Fritz Frosch in Bischofsgruen. Best regards, and Servus ! Werner Weissflach [email protected]

Comments: Hi! My name is DeAnna Knoepfle, maiden name DeAnna Joan Bateman. David Bateman was my father. He is deceased now since Jan. 16 1988. I was wondering if anyone remembered him or had any stories about him when he was in the military. My dad was very ill by the time I was born and passed away due to lots of complications including MLS and ALS so I do not have a lot of information or stories about his time in the Army. Any information would be much appreciated.

Dale Hughes ([email protected]) on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 16:39:23 (Pacific time). --------------------------------------------------------------------------comments: Even tho we have not seen George and Vera Moore near as much as we would have liked over the last few years, we will miss George a lot. Living in the NCO quarters with George and Vera Moore and the "Batman" family was always a lot of fun and we played hard. We were only 12 families there, but we smiled a lot! Doug and Evies wedding reception was a highlight of our time on Schneeberg and was held at our apt there in Bayreuth. Tom Thornton lost his car that night and I remember someone sipping on a bottle of Chivas until he fell out of his chair. Ken Knoor, George Moore, Vera, Doug and Evie, Roger Vilmont, George Graves (and his myriad of girlfriends), Tom Thornton, the "Batman's" and many others fill the memory of our time in Bischofsgrun and Bayreuth homes. It was a very special time in our lives. Goodbye George. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Messages of condolence may be left at the following website: http://www.oliverfloyd.com/obituaries/details/602-george-b-moore-sr.html

He was born April 2, 1942 in Greenville. son of the late George B., Sr. and Lillian Marie (Fields) Moore. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, George B Moore, III on January 28, 2006; a brother, Clayton Moore, and a sister, Serena Kay Moore. George was retired from the US Army having served for 25 years. He then employed by the National Security Agency. He was a member of the Severna Park Untied Methodist Church in Serverna Park, MD. A devoted and loving family man, George is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vera I. (Dickey) Moore whom he married December 23, 1960; sons, Jeffery (Cathy) Moore of Sturbridge, Mass., Gregory Moore of Millersville, MD; grandchildren, Holly, Alysa, Ashton, and Autumn Moore; sister, Helen (Newman) Ross of Sidney; a brother, Thomas (Merry) Moore of Arcanum; his mother-in-law, Leona Dickey of Rossburg: and numerous nieces and nephews. Services with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville, Ohio with Rev. Steve Short officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbottsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, August 24 from 5-8 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Beamsville Christian Church. Phil, I knew George Moore from about October 1960 until summer 1963. We were E1s and were in the same Czech class. As far as I remember we were the only two from Ohio. We both ended up at Schneeberg. I departed the Army at the end of my enlistment, and George reenlisted. We were never close, but were on identical paths for those three years. I have looked for an obituary for George. Do you know where he has passed away? BTW while I was home in Ohio last week I located a couple more pictures of the hill from probably 1963. There is at least one more picture of the German tower under construction. Mark Arnold In a message dated 8/21/2011 8:06:46 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes:

Folks, Just a few minutes ago I received word from my long-time poker buddy (and Schneeberg alumni) Wally Price that SGM George Moore, USA (Ret) has passed away. George was my trick chief on Schneeberg when he was an E-6. Years later I believe he was Command Sgt Major at Field Station Augburg. During his final tour in the military at Ft Meade, he worked on my team in the Czech branch. He was close friends with Wally Price and John Durkay. When/If I get the official obituary, I will send it to you and post it on the Rimbach site and ask Phil Ward to do the same on the SchneebergVets site. George was unique and one helluva Czech linguist. C'est jeho pamatce (Honor his memory). Nasheldano, Jir'i Vic. Guys, it looks like I will not make it to the game this Friday. We learned today that George Moore passed away last night in his sleep. He and Vera were back in their home town, Greenville, Ohio, which is where they planned to be buried, so Pat and I will probably be out there later this week for the service. That's all the information I have for the moment. George has not been doing well for a couple of years now, as he came down with diabetes and then lost his leg to complications with that disease. We don't know yet what caused his death, but assume it was related. Wally I found this interesting and thought you would too: DarkeJournal Obituaries: George B. Folks, Do any of you recognize the guy in the center of the attached photo? He is known as T.H.E. Hill and is the author of "Voices Under Berlin: The Tale of a Monterey Mary." I read the book recently and found it okay. The fun parts (nostalgia) were reading about 5ply colored paper with carbon paper in between, MIL typewriters, TR Notes, and stuff like that. He is listed as Thomas Heinrich Edward Hill, and his official bio is as follows: T.H.E.Hill served with the U.S. Army Security Agency at Field Station Berlin in the mid1970s, after a tour at Herzo Base in the late 1960s. He is a three-time graduate of The Defense Language Institute (DLIWC) in Monterey, California, the alumni of which are called "Monterey Marys". The Army taught him to speak Russian, Polish, and Czech; three tours in Germany taught him to speak German, and his wife taught him to speak Dutch. He has been a writer his entire adult life, but now retired from Federal Service, he writes what he wants, instead of the things that others tasked him to write while he was still working. When you look at the attached photo, note the "ear muffs" around his neck. :) Remember them? And remember going on duty and putting on the sweaty set of muffs that were just worn by the op you relieved?! Since he was a Czech "Mary", presumably at Herzo in the late 1960s, somebody in our groups should recognize him. Three tours in Germany and three times at DLI probably mean that he put in 20 years -- late 60s to late 80s? His new book is The Day Before the Berlin Wall: Could We Have Stopped It?. Hi Matt: An acquaintance sent this to me last week and I had to share it to you. This is where your Dad was stationed in 1965. Schneeburg is one of two high mountain peaks in our area that, because of its proximity, was a listening post for tuning in on the Czechs during those cold days after WWII. Hugh was a member of the 318th ASA unit there. The piece really captures the time and period. I did not recognize any of the faces in the photos, but I am certain Hugh would have. This is a keeper for you and your brothers. The name in the cc line of this email is also a former member of the unit, but he served after your Dad’s time. There was a fellow in the unit at the time, named Buddy Eith who moved to Berlin after his Army days. He was a pal of your parents, but I don’t

I am so glad that I was able to put you in touch with one another. Kudos to Phil Ward for his Schneebergvets website which helps keep some of the memories alive. When I tell people about my days at Schneeberg, I tell them it was nothing like being in the "real" army. It was a combination of M*A*S*H* and Animal House (Delta House with an attitude, as Phil has said). Just like in Delta House, many of the guys had nicknames. There was Lurch the radio maintenance guy, Bear, Whiskeyman, Evil Crow, Walrus (wasn't that you, John?), Grommett Cook, Poop, Weasel, Jolly Ollie (det NCOIC), and others I can't recall right now. The apartment I rented was in a 3-unit building at 10 Kollenaden Weg near the river and the kur hotel, below the clock tower. Our landlady was Frau Frank. I think I took over the apartment from Bill Fulton, a Russian linguist. John Bednarik (Czech) lived on the ground floor. The townspeople were especially kind to my new bride Dorothy who was not quite 21 when we arrived and who did not speak any German other than "I don't understand" and "thank you." The 6 months in Bad B. were our honeymoon and a memory we will always cherish. Hello Dave,

Jerry Davis forwarded your communication on to me.

Yes, I was very close to Hugh and Mary Lou. We (John & Charlene) shared a house with them in Baernreuth - rented it from Edi Muhlbauer. I have attached a photo of it 31 Barnreuther Strasse. It was the one at the end of road to the forest just above the pond and the resident flock of geese. We lived there from the June '66 to Nov '67 when Hugh and I went home and were mustered out. That house was the first home for his oldest son Matthew (born in '66) and our son John F (born in '67). We were both 98G2L63 - Russian (SimultVoiceIntOperators) We had met at DLI. My wife Charlene died in 1995 and I remarried (Elisabeth) in 1997. At Thanksgiving of 1996 on a trip to meet her family, all NY/CN/ME people we located Hugh and visited them. They were living in Mary Lou's father's old home. From that time on Hugh and I kept in touch via internet. So I knew about his passing in 2010, February I believe. At that visit I met two of their sons.

It seems like several old postings are missing & I no longer have their Email addresses. Keep up the good work Phil. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Folks, Yesterday was Memorial Day, a day to pause and remember those who gave their all for our country and for those who served and who passed away. This morning I learned of the passing of another of our former comrades -- Leonard "Mitch" Mitchem. Mitch was stationed at Det K (Hoherbogen) with me in the summer of 1966 and also served at Herzo Base. I don't think he was at Schneeberg, but I'm not sure. If I recall correctly, he worked in the comms center at the Det K site up on the mountain. He was a quiet, friendly guy. The link to his obituary is posted below. My name is Markus Haage. I am a 28 year old German from the town of Schöningen (Lower Saxony). I've stumpled upon your website while searching for some more information about the Torii-Towers in the Elm forrest (near Schöningen and the small town Wobeck). Anyhow, I am running a website called Mein-Schoeningen.de. Its unpolitical, independent and uncommercial. Its mainly about the history of the town of Schöningen and a huge and important part of the city history were the US soldiers living here. Right now I am working on an article about the Torii-Towers. http://mein-schoeningen.de/422/die-torii-towers-im-elm/ And Ive found a lot of brilliant pictures on your website that I would like to use. These ones: http://www.schneebergvets.org/brewermielke/brewermielke.htm http://www.schneebergvets.org/kerrymusick/kerrymusick.htm I am not only very interested in the history of the Torii-Towers for my website, but also for personal reasons. My parents own a hotel, the Deutsches Haus in Schöningen, and for a lot of

years, American soldiers (mostly higher ranks) lived in our hotel and became part of our "family". Also, we were responsible for the "catering" of the soldiers staioned in the Elm. Anyhow, hope it could be possible to share some images. Of course I will respect the copyright. If you have some contacts to veterans of this stations and if they would like to share some memories (maybe also about the life in Schöningen), it would be VERY aprreciated. Thanks for your time. Hey Phil! Thanks a lot for your permission, support and fast reply! I have embedded some of the stories from your site (I kept them in English) and pictures. http://mein-schoeningen.de/422/die-torii-towers-im-elm/ I have put the sources at the end of the article. The article isnt finished yet. Have to wait for some others folks to get their permission to put some more stuff online. Anyhow, this is really great stuff that needs to be shown. As I said, Mein-Schoeningen.de is a new website made by myself to (mainly) explore the history of the town. And the US forces were a huge and important part of the post-war history. My parents (still) run a hotel called Deutsches Haus. Heres a pic from the 60s. http://mein-schoeningen.de/site/wp-content/gallery/hoetensleber-strasse/hoetens3.jpg And in the 80s we were responsible for the catering of the US troops and a lot of them (mostly higher ranks) lived in the hotel. Thats one of my first real childhood memories. I was kinda growing up among Americans soldiers. We still have contact to some of them. Some still live in the town of Schöningen (they stayed after their military duty). Like, the local computer store is run by an Ex-GI from Montana. Heres a pic of a xmas celebration of the B-Company Wobeck in my parents hotel: http://hotel-haage.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/hotel_schoeningen_geschichte41a.jpg Thats another pic. GIs "breakfasting" (?) in our hotel... http://hotel-haage.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/hotel_schoeningen_geschichte42a.jpg And a thank you lettter from the B-Comapny to my parents... http://hotel-haage.de/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/hotel_schoeningen_geschichte40a.jpg Fell free to post them on the message bopard you have mentioned. Maybe some of the folks from the 80s and early 90s are there too. BTW two of the former GIs who were here in 60s have allready contacted me. So thanks again for the contact. Anyhow, the request was only about the Torii Towers - but I am also interested in more material. Right now I am working on a new sections called "Erinnerungen an Schöningen" (Memories from Schöningen).

So, if you have some memories to share (maybe with some pics from your daily life in the town) feel free to contribute. It doesnt need to be journalistic - thats why its called Memories (therefore it can be 100% from an subjective viewpoint). Just saying, if you have some great stories, feel free to tell them. The website will be up and running for decades! ;) And the material will be collected for the local Museum (also uncommercial), too to preserve it for upcoming generations. Okay, enough for now. As I said if you are interested to tell some stories about your time in Schöningen that would be cool (no need to hurry). If yes, feel free to contact me whenever you want. Regards, Markus 2012/7/25 Phil Ward Markus,

You can use any of the pictures on schneebergvets.org for your non-commercial work. I will post your interest in Schöningen and the life and times of those who listened at the "Elms" on a web site which hosts those who were stationed at Roth Westen - many also were stationed at Schoningen. I was fortunate to have visited Schoningen in 2004 to relive many wonderful memories. I was often at the Godeb Kugel which was owned by a family from Zagreb Yugoslavia. http://www.schneebergvets.org/reunion2004phil/reunion2004phil.htm (scroll down to the bottom of the web page.) --------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi, Phil!

I had been concerned about Danny McGraw since he wrote to you and me asking for contact information so his wife could contact us when he passed away. (At least that's the way I read his e-mail back then.) Anyway, I decided to send him a Christmas card and a note along with an ASA on the border refrigerator magnet I bought on eBay. I was very Schneebergvets Newsletter

happy to hear that he is still hanging in there and that perhaps he will be around for a while to come. I thought I'd share his note with you, but please don't post it on the Schneebergvets site or forward it to anyone else. I've been reading a book titled "The Waldenthal Gasthaus" by someone named Ron McGraw. It is about a bunch of ASA guys in the late 1950s who are billeted in a gashaus and private homes in the village of Waldenthal which sits at the base of a mountain called Alpenberg. The village is clearly Bischofsgrun, and the gasthaus sounds a lot like the Post to me. The book actually isn't all that great, but it's fun to read anyway. I'm pretty sure the author is the same ex-ASA guy who wrote "Voices Under Berlin" under the name T.H.E. Hill. Through a chain of events on eBay, I wound up in contact with the latter author who was a Polish linguist at Herzo in the late 60s and who later trained in Czech and another language, I think it was Russian. He and I had several former colleagues in common. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2013. Vesele Vanoce! Jerry Date: Mon, 24 Dec 2012 18:38:14 -0800 From: [email protected] Subject: Merry Christmas To: [email protected] Hi Jerry, Every now and then when you least expect it something nice comes our way. Such was the unexpected arrival of your Christmas Card. It was certainly a nice suprise. I still think of someone or something Schneeberg or Germany on a regular basis but alas we are just old fossils now. I like to think I could walk into the modern version of what we once did and come up to speed fairly quickly. Got the shortwave on in front of me now. The HF bands are pretty quite these days compared to times gone by BUT if I were one of the bad guys and needed to communicate without using my cell or the internet I would be tempted to try old RTTY using a simple group code. I doubt anyone would pay it any attention these days (except me). I'm hanging in there. The Charcot Marie Tooth keeps chipping away but I am still walking even if not in a straight line. I am now highly glucose intolerant (almost diabetic) and hypertensive as well but then so are many my age. I am hoping to get in some fishing this winter but it is becoming increasingly difficult to deal with the cold. I got out of the boat after a day on the water about a week ago and could barely unzip my oversuit. When I tried to unlock the truck it took both thumbs and forefingers to do it. My fingers simply will not work anymore when my hands get cold. It is what it is. There is always radio. I once read a rhyme describing all the tribulations of growing old. It found it hilarious at the time. Not so funny now. Schneebergvets Newsletter

We had our family Christmas on Thanksgiving. My daughter and her family came in from GA and everyone seemed to have a good time. I have one daughter and her family that live in the area she and her family were over this evening for a Christmas eve dinner and chat. Just found a teletype signal on 8472 khz. Kind of weak and cannot copy it. Sounds like 60 wpm. Maybe another time. Very little tty active on the bands anymore. Most commo changed modes and went SAT. I could buy the equipment to play with that I suppose. Hope you and yours enjoy a Happy Holiday Season and hopefully the new year will be good to all of us. I was actually stationed in Heidelberg at the 9487th and was TDY to the 9473 on several occasions. Then some 10 years later I was part of the American contingent that designed, built, installed and got the "monster behind the gate" operational for the German Air Force. It was designed to become a restaurant after the reunification of Germany. At that time the reunification was only a dream for W. Germany at that time. The German civilians did not want any structures to remain at Schneeberg and the 240 foot tower is now just a gray ghost. I kept in touch with Major Boston who rotated back to the states in the late '50's and died of cancer in the Ft. Meade area around 1960. --Conrad Welch ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Phil: Off and on for the last umpty-ump years we've been trying to locate David G. Lindeman, one of our ELINT pals from Schneeberg in 1964. Dave married Renate, who was from Wunsiedel, and left the Army. Since then, they seem to have disappeared. comments: Greetings; I never did hear anything from Donna Buxton about that Schneeberg tapestry I have (signed "Donna J. Buxton 76 -77"). It seems like it would be a good thing to have posted under the memorabilia section (although, after looking at that section, I could not find it again). Do you still have the photo to post, or should I send it again? My thinking was that maybe she would like to have it back, but there never was any contact info. To reiterate the story; I was a Czech/German 98G at Schneeberg from May of 1980 until I ETS'd in December 1983, working as a single channel interceptor, then multichannel, stint as NCOIC, etc. When I arrived, the place was still being 'resurrected' by ASA and the compound was made up of tactical trucks with huts inside strands of concertina wire. By the time I left in 83, the stone building had been remodeled, an ops building was built, and a new antenna over the gate (of course this was all for naught, since our former 98C, Jim Hall, had PCS'd to Berlin and was giving info to the East Germans and Russians after about 1981). Somewhere in this process they were going to do something with that 'log cabin' over by the Backoeffle that had become a storage room for a bunch of junk - in the process of cleaning stuff out, I had saved this tapestry from being thrown out and have had it in a box for 30 years or so. I would be happy to return it to its maker, if she wants it. I do not care to have my email address posted.

Hello Phil, certainly I know Gerd Schober, a small men at this time,a little overweigthed with bald hairs. As I remember, he worked in the Dieter Schreeb Gang (ELINT) at this time. By the way, the German Mt Schneeberg buildings presently for sale by the German government.Unfortunately, there is no pricing available. But it might cost the symbolic one € with the obligation to safeguard this as a "Historic Monument", similar to the installations on "Hoher Bogen". Dear Phil, as I mentioned in my previous E-Mail,attached please find the expose concerning the sale of Mt Schneeberg. It might be of interest for the SchneebergVets. However, I have finished my last Book " Military Intelligence at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe :1985-1989" which will come out in October 2013.It deals a lot with intelligence of both sides during the period 1985 -1989 ,especially with SIGINT (COMINT &ELINT) .By chance I have had access to the files if the Ministry of State Security Hauptabteilung III ,which were responsible for SIGINT at the MfS at this time.Additionally, I have had access to the files of the Zentraler Funkdienst of the National Peoples Army of the GDR,which were the SIGINT - Branch of the GDR-Army.Quite interesting, because the knew a lot.
