Excellence for Lancaster, in all aspects, always.

June/July 2015 Issue 62

This year’s Junior Prize Giving took place on Thursday 30 th April 2015. Year 7, 8 and 9 boys were awarded for their effort in a range of academic, sporting, artistic and community activities. The school was delighted to welcome Mr Bali Rai who is a children’s author from Leicester. He has won several awards for his individual novels and his series of books. He has also delivered literacy workshops at Lancaster. The audience were also entertained by Daniel Blackford and Charlie Gilmour-Evans on solo keyboards. Then a band, led by Frank Palfreman, called ‘By The Way’ brought a rousing note to the event. Speakers on the night were Jake Wormleighton from Year 9 who spoke eloquently about his time at the school and especially about his experiences in cricket and on trips. Raheem Farrell-Choudhery delivered the vote of thanks. The Headteacher was able to speak about the exciting prospects ahead with the £13 million school rebuild due to be completed in August 2015 and how the boys in the hall would benefit from this. Major award winners were: The Callum Deacon Cup for Year 7 Hugh Duffield The Fazaeli Cup for Outstanding Work Ethic Year 8 Kaylan Parmar The Fazaeli Cup for Outstanding Work Ethic Year 9 Jacob Brooksbank-Eames The Lapworth Cup Y8 for diligence and commitment Tyreece Phillip The Lapworth Cup Y9 for diligence and commitment Karan Kaul

It has come to my attention during the course of this half term, the number of high caffeine energy fizzy drinks that pupils are consuming at school had rapidly increased. Brand names include Rockstar, Burn, Monster and Full Throttle. Although not containing caffeine, Lucozade too has excessive sugar and carbohydrates for daily use; this list is not exhaustive.

The percentages of caffeine, sugar and other ingredients are considerably above the medical recommendations for children of secondary school age and staff have subjectively noticed the considerable impact on classes that takes place when boys consume one or even more of these drinks in a break or lunch period. Whilst I wish to respect the values and rights of our boys, I have a responsibility for promoting health and well-being, especially with a long established ‘Healthy School’ status. I also have a responsibility to ensure that all boys receive the best education possible in calm and purposeful class environments. As from our return after the summer, high energy drinks will be banned from The Lancaster School for all boys. Boys are allowed to bring water, diluted squash or a natural fruit or milk based drink to school. If a pupil is caught in possession of a high energy drink, the drink will be confiscated. The confiscation will also include a sanction. Repeat offenders and/or those caught selling to other boys will receive a more significant consequence. I am confident that the vast majority, if not all, parents will understand and support this action. Russell Kennedy Headteacher

On Friday 1st May the school library was visited by Leicester author Bali Rai. Bali took three sessions of talks for Year 8 pupils. Bali talked about his life in Leicester, what has inspired him to write books and reading for pleasure. The talks were informative, humorous and challenging and the pupils had an opportunity to ask questions and buy books signed by Bali. The library has all Bali’s books in stock for pupils to borrow. Mrs Greenough

Over the past few weeks the Year 7’s and some Year 8 pupils have been taking in part in the Reading Rampage Project in conjunction with Leicester City Libraries and the Whatever It Takes project. The school was given 100 books made up of 20 different titles, ranging from fiction books to a biography and ‘Horrible History’ book. Year 7 English classes have been reading some of the books and many Year 7 and 8 pupils have borrowed the books from the school library. The Reading Club has also been reading some of the titles. Mrs Greenough and Mrs Fairley nominated Chayton Robertson from 7RP for the award of Reading Champion. This is because Chayton borrowed and reviewed the most books and was very enthusiastic throughout the project. The project finished with the Reading Rampage Awards event held on Thursday 4 June at the Leicester Tigers Rugby Stadium. Chayton and seven other pupils, accompanied by Mrs Greenough and Mrs Fairley, attended the event. The awards event was attended by pupils from all the Leicester City schools and guest speakers included seven of the authors. The pupils s took part in a quiz and were able to ask the authors questions in a ‘Mastermind’ themed talk. Our pupils asked five questions to author Nicky Singer who wrote ‘The Flask’. All the pupils were given a ‘goodie’ bag including a new book. Thank you to all the pupils who have taken part in the Reading Rampage Challenge and well done to Chayton for winning our Reading Champion Award. Chayton Robertson, Reading Champion with Bali Rai

Have you ever been so embarrassed by your mum and dad so much that you want to run away?? Well, Nathalia Bumole (or should I say Nathalia Buttface) has been. Imagine being late for your first day at a new school, not because you have missed the bus but because your dad has got you stuck up a tree with a mad dog barking underneath the tree. And while this is happening, Dad is dressed as a clown! Imagine that your Dad invites your teacher round to your house for dinner with the whole family. To top it off, Nathalia’s only friend is a boy called Darius Bagley, the class freak! Think about Fregley from ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ and add a finger stuck up a snotty nose. All of this and it is only the first day of school - from here on it only gets worse! Read it, I know you will like it. Page 6

Forty five Year 9 pupils went to Duxford Air Museum in late June. The boys spent the day exploring the hangars at the Imperial War Museum in Cambridgeshire, learning about the machines that shaped the history of our country during the World Wars and beyond. They saw a number of impressive military vehicles including a Lancaster Bomber and a Sherman tank. The boys also learnt about aviation history, seeing the original material used in the Wright brothers’ plane and they even got to walk aboard Concorde! Two boys (no names mentioned) attempted to enter an area designated for authorised personnel only, they were quickly picked up by airport security!

A challenge was set to all pupils – If you could only use 12 exhibits from the whole museum to show the story of World War Two, which 12 would you use and why? There were numerous very worthwhile entries that were awarded small mementoes from the gift shop by myself. Particularly impressive was the encyclopaedic knowledge of all the exhibits by Will Kirkland who regularly was able to teach me something infintesible about a type of plane. Well done to all the boys for their efforts, and thanks for Mr Anderson, Ms Wilson and Ms Limbert for their patience and enthusiasm that always makes this such a rewarding and interesting trip. Mr Aldis

On the 13th May, the School Council visited the Houses of Parliament to take part in an educational workshop and tour. The thirteen boys got the unique opportunity to look round the House of Lords and get an insight into the day-to-day running of parliament. The boys were scheduled to visit the Houses of Commons but couldn’t gain access on the day as the Prime Minister was inducting his new cabinet! The school Council spent the afternoon taking part in a ‘Making Laws’ workshop which was an interactive experience into how new laws are made and passed in the UK.

“Looking around the Houses of Parliament was such a great experience that helped me understand how the government works” Hugh Duffield, School Council Year 7 On 28th April 2015, boys in Years 10 and 11 taking music GCSE took part in a musical showcase. The programme included music by The Lumineers, Moby, Einaudi, Two Door Cinema Club, Original Compositions and Coldplay to name but a few. The concert was run by the pupils, with Angus Cheney on sound, Robert Callaghan on front of house and Jai Nutting, Will Astill and Sam Pugh on refreshments. The concert was a great occasion for the Year 11 leavers to showcase all their hard work from the past two years and allowed them to pass the mantle down to the current year 10’s who will be taking their place next year. They even performed one of their GCSE set works, Why Does my Heart Feel So Bad? By Moby, because they loved it so much (obviously!). A big thank you to Mrs Regan who has worked tirelessly over the last two years to get the first GCSE cohort through successfully! I think all the boys really appreciate your hard work! Thank you to Mr Cortazzi who provided excellent lighting throughout the show. Finally, thank you to all the parents and pupils who have supported the boys throughout, and we hope to see you at the Summer Show and other concerts in the future. Miss Purchase

The DT department would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the staff and students of the Product Design Faculty at De Montfort University for running a drawing skill and university life taster session for our boys. We have been fortunate enough to see the state-of-the-art work that is being carried whilst benefitting from their expertise. Twenty boys from Year 9 (and one exceptionally talented Year 7) were given an introductory talk by Mr Lawson and Mr Crummie about the ground-breaking work that the students are producing at DMU. This included a flat-pack bicycle helmet, a specially developed device that absorbs water pollutants like oil spills and a range of John Lewis furniture. The boys listened intently during this session which was followed by a tour of the workshops. The afternoon was rounded off with a hands-on drawing skills activity. A PhD student who has developed a computer manufactured speaker supported our pupils in enhancing their previously produced line sketches and turning them into high-quality presentation drawings that could be used during a designer/client pitch. Mr Crook.

The Year 8 Football team this year have had a very successful season. They have not only had a fantastic attitude towards training but have also performed exceptionally well on the pitch. The boys won their league comfortably and only conceded three goals in the process. They then went on to win the following three games on their route to the County Schools cup final. A solid performance from the lads resulted in a 2-0 victory which saw them crowed champions. Not only did the Year 8’s perform well in their league and the county cup, but they also had great run in the National competition. Out of over 700 school teams that entered nationally, the Lancaster School reached the final 64, and lost out to Shelney Brook School in Milton Keynes 3-2. Shelney Brook then went onto reach the final 8. A fantastic season boys, Bring on next year!!

A great turn out at the West Leicester regional qualifier saw 12 Lancaster pupils’ progress to the county championships. This was held on a very wet and rainy day at Saffron Lane on 13th June. A stand out performance from Rowan Powell to becoming county Long Jump champion with a jump of 6.29m. All pupils involved should be exceptionally proud of their achievement to reach the county championship. Well done!!! Lancaster pupils to attend the County Competition: Arlott-John Powell

After a successful league campaign that saw the Year 10 football team go unbeaten, they qualified for the first time in 4 years for the latter stages of the County Cup. They faced a real test in the quarter final against Martin High School and managed to show the character needed to win 4-2 in extra time. A further challenge faced them as they travelled out to Humphrey Perkins for the Semi-Final. This turned out to be a high quality game that was a credit to school football. This was also unquestionably the best team performance in 4 years. Lancaster managed to come out of the game with a 3-2 victory which saw them qualify for their first County Cup Final. A special mention must go to Kairo Arlott-John who scored the best hat-trick I have ever seen. This included a shot direct from the kick off. Unfortunately in the final they came up against a very well organised side in Robert Smyth who raced into an early 3-0 lead. Despite, an improved performance in the second half Lancaster were unable to break their strong defence and Robert Smyth managed to see the game out and become champions. It has been a pleasure to see how much this team has developed and grown over the past 4 years and hopefully they can go one step further next year. Mr Hodges Page 11

Pupils from Years 8, 9 and 10 were lucky enough to be invited along for two different sessions with World Cup winner, Jason Robinson, who scored England’s only try in the final, and world icon, Jonny Robinson. In both sessions, pupils were able to ask questions and then take part in practical sessions with the England and British Lions legends. At the O2 festival at Loughborough Rugby Club they were also able to meet TV personality Vernon Kay and Northampton and England prop Alex Corbisiero. During the day long rugby festival they had the opportunity to take part in some work experience and, despite the weather, all of the pupils had an excellent day. Well done to all of the boys who represented the school superbly. Mr Rupal and I both agreed that their behaviour and attitude was outstanding. Mr Sandford

Congratulations to the team on coming 3rd in the national conference finals at Nottingham. After losing their first match by 94-63 against a very strong Harris Academy (after getting back to within 5 points in the third quarter) they picked themselves up to win by beating Queen Ethelburgas Collegiate 79-75. It was a fantastic team performance made more impressive by losing Ernest Mawomo, one of the star players, in the first half suffering from concussion. Nial Harris was m.o.m. scoring 48 points in the second match. Well done to all of the squad and thanks to Reuben Walker for coming along to give some much needed coaching advice. Mr Sandford

The Year 10 Cricket came was rejuvenated by the addition of several new players who joined the school recently. I'd like to thank them for their enthusiasm and commitment, it has been an absolute pleasure to work with this team this season. Record for the season played 4 won 2, lost 2. The Season started with excellent victories against Rushey Mead and Moat which were completed quite comfortably; we were then defeated fairly easily by a very strong Loughborough Grammar side including several county players. In our last game, a league decider we suffered a heartbreakingly narrow defeats to Soar Valley who needed in 14 of the last over of a 20-20 game and completed it with two balls to spare! This put us out of the league in the most gut wrenching way. Special performance mentions for their batting and go to runs Jaan Shafi and Ben Jefferson, who came back in the last game after breaking his arm to score an excellent 40 when the team was 5 down. We needed a few more from Akash Kamlesh and Kenil Shah at the the top of the order. On the bowling front, we missed Josh Atwell’s wickets from last season, but there were decent performances from Kenil Shah, Dhruvic Patel, and Jake Wormleighton, all picked up regular wickets. I'd like to commend Salim Shah for his fantastic energetic fielding and a mention of Nilay Maisuria who took an absolute worldy catch at long on.
