Read the chapter thoroughly before coming to the class. Plan in your mind how you want to tackle the subject. Bring Notes, Memos to aide you in teaching. Vary the strategies and use the visual aids to capture the students’ attention. Sit with them in a circle, tell a story and encourage them to bring their own experience to the classroom. Do not keep them on the floor more than 5-7 minutes. Some topics needs to be stretched over many weeks, the instructor has all the flexibility to do so, as longas it is for the students deeper understanding. Please see week 7 in this unit plan as an example. This session can take more than a week, as it is heavy and sensitive topic, students may have many misconceptions about these topics. The phases in week 7 plan (Engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate) is a good systematic way to be followed to introduce a new topic, however, you will have the flexibility to use any strategies which will fit your kids styles of leanings and abilities and or to engage them. It is very important for us as curriculum planners to get your feedback about the best ways, tools and strategies you have used to get your students’ attention. Have a text book open in front of you to follow the sequence of sub topics. Plan to finish the lesson within the allotted time. Finally, do not forget your sense of humor! A smile makes a huge difference; it keeps them more relaxed and absorbs the information faster.
