t is spring time again, and tennis season has been in full swing for most of us for the last month or so. Whether you look forward to the new USTA league, another U.S. Open or your local mixer, I hope you will get more out of our great game in 2010 – and give a little back at the same time. There are many ways to support our sport at the local, state and national levels, and I encourage everyone to find a way you might help out. I hope to meet many more of our Texas players in my second and final year as section president. Although we are not the largest, it does not mean we are not the best. With everyone’s hard work, we will continue to keep Texas tennis at the top of the game!

In March, we hosted the USTA annual meeting in Dallas and showed our fellow volunteers a great time. We had many long committee meetings but still had time to have a Texas-sized barbeque and country western dance. A special thanks to Whistler the Steer for being nice to everyone who had their picture taken, including USTA president Lucy Garvin and ITF president Francesco Ricci Bitti sitting on the steer! They also had a mechanical bull that everyone really had a blast trying to ride. We also were able to bring back the gold, with our stellar team of Rick Meyers, Punam Kirsten, Emily Schaefer, Chad Loup and coach Frank Kelly pulling out an outstanding win in the first and probably last section “Snowdown.” A 36-foot quickstart, foam-ball event , was moved indoors due to the blizzard that hit Dallas; this turned out to be the hit of the meeting. We also pulled off a win in the Wii tennis event, won by Jon Williams and Carlos Turic. Congratulations to all for competing and supporting our team.

Since this is the yearbook addition, I would like to congratulate all the ranked players for 2009 and wish everyone the best of luck in 2010. I understand the hard work that goes into playing the many tournaments during the year and the hours of practice getting ready. If you achieved a national ranking or won a gold, silver or bronze ball, a special congratulations to you. We have a special opportunity for all players this year. Arlington Tennis Center will host the U.S. Open Texas Section Pre-Qualifying tournament June 21-26. This will be the last of 16 tournaments taking place around the country, so I expect full 256-player draws for both men and women. The entries are open now and will close June 7. What a great idea – a chance to compete in the U.S. Open! I look forward to seeing you there, as I plan on competing myself! The winner from each qualifying tournament will advance to a playoff for a spot in the qualifying draw of the U.S. Open. Maybe next year we can have an event just for the veteran players. Thanks for representing USTA Texas this past year. We continue to be a strong and vibrant section because of our players, volunteers and staff. Have a great season!

ur 2010 Texas Section Yearbook. This is our ninth year to have it included as a portion of our official magazine. We wish to say a special thank you to TennisLife Magazine for a partnership that has put us in a class by ourselves in serving Texas tennis players.

We invite you to enjoy finding last year’s adult rankings, award recipient write-ups, the USPTA Texas leaders, reference lists of state-wide volunteers and programs, our current USTA Texas leaders, 2008 league winners, 2008 Team Tennis Youth winners, Texas Tennis Hall of Fame recipients, program descriptions, our wonderful sponsors, and pictures of happy tennis players. We strongly believe in the historic relevance and documentation of our annual award winners, rankings, volunteer leaders, and stories of each year. So we invite you to put this on your coffee table or mantle and read at your leisure. Save your yearbooks to one place so that you may some day look back and enjoy the memories and remember why tennis is the greatest sport for youth, adults, friends, and family.

Tennis Growth Continues Since the boom time of the 70’s and 80’s, tennis has not had such resurgence as it has now. In fact, tennis is now enjoying a second boom since those days. It started with a report from the Tennis Industry Association at the end of 2009. Tennis participation had reached a 25 year high of 30 million players which successfully reached the 30 by 2010 goal set over six years ago. Although frequent player numbers are not up, play occasions are. At that time, the latest figures were that tennis was up by 12% from 2008 to 2009 and 43% from 2000 through 2009. Then, during the USTA Annual Meeting in March, even better news about tennis growth was revealed by the Sporting Goods Manufacturer’s Association. In a comparison of all of the traditional sports, tennis is the only growth sport of all the traditional sports. Except for Racquetball at 2%, the Sporting Goods Manufacturers survey show that tennis is the only sport showing growth over the last nine years at 43% growth. Football, baseball, golf, softball, basketball, and gymnastics have all suffered a decline in participation during the same period. Johns Hopkins research shows tennis as the leading heart-healthy sport among the same list. An 88% growth in the sale of youth rackets from 2003 through 2008 bodes well for the future of tennis as well. Unlike the boom of 30 years ago, our current efforts with the CTA Expansion Plan, Quickstart, and all of our other programs give us a stronger infrastructure on which to maintain the growth. Although the economic climate could have some negative effect, our sense is that tennis is a sport easy to participate in good times and bad. n Saturday, February 13, the United States Tennis Association Texas presented its annual awards at the 2009 Texas Tennis Hall of Fame Recognition and USTA-USPTA Awards Banquet at The Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center in Grapevine, Texas. Carlos Turic of Dallas (USTA Texas Randy Snow Wheelchair Service Award), Evelyn “Jane” Hammond of Waco (Umpire of the Year), Roland Elizondo of Corpus Christi (Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit Award), Bev Taylor of Houston (USTA Texas Community Service Award), Kathy Langer of Dallas (Julius Zinn Seniors’ Service Award), Ben Eshleman of Corpus Christi (W.T. Caswell Service Award) and the Tommie and Sarah Pernell Family of Austin (USTA Texas Family of the Year) were all recognized for their contributions to tennis. The USTA Texas Randy Snow Wheelchair Service Award was created in 2009 to honor the life of the Texas tennis icon for which it was named. The award honors the person who most exhibits the enthusiasm for cultivating the growth of wheelchair tennis that Randy Snow embodied. The USTA Texas Umpire of the Year Award, established in 1981, recognizes an USTA certified official for his/her outstanding service and time spent working to strengthen officiating in the Texas Section. Inaugurated in 1989, the USTA Texas Community Service Award honors an individual who provides outstanding contributions in promoting and conducting recreational tennis programs for adults and/or juniors. The Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit Award, established in

1979, recognizes an individual that is actively involved with junior players. This individual must exhibit outstanding activities at a professional level in building stronger junior tennis players at all levels of play. First awarded in 1962, the W. T. Caswell Service Award is given to the Texas resident who has made valuable contributions to the growth and development of tennis in Texas, working as a volunteer within the framework of the USTA (United States Tennis Association) Texas. Since 1975 the USTA Texas has honored a family for their contributions to Texas tennis as the USTA Texas Family of the Year. The Julius Zinn Seniors’ Service Award was first awarded in 1997 and honors a senior member of the USTA Texas who has made a contribution through his/her efforts, willingness, cooperation, and participation. This individual is most deserving of the respect and honor of the seniors, either in play and/or organizational work for the betterment and furtherance of senior activities. Earlier in the day, the USTA Texas honored several long-time volunteers for their years of service with the USTA Service Pin. Keith Diepraam

K

eith Diepraam did not start playing tennis until the age of 15 when he transferred to Glenwood High School in Durban, South Africa. He was selected to play in the Davis Cup in 1963 for South Africa and played in over 34 Davis Cup matches. Keith was classified as an amateur until Professional tennis would open in 1970. It was during this time that he would win against Arthur Ashe, play in the Davis Cup for his country and reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in both Singles and Doubles in 1965. He was ranked #1 in the World in the 45’s in 1988. In 1973, he became the director of the tennis program in Midland and taught for seven years before heading to Houston to take a position at the Sugarcreek Country Club, where he worked until his retirement in 2009. During his time at Sugarcreek, he left to coach several South African Juniors, including Wayne Ferreira and coached on the ATP Tour for eight years.

Lee Hamilton

L

ee Hamilton was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Bucknell University and his master’s of business administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He has served as the President of the Community Tennis Associations in both Houston and Dallas, which enabled him to be directly involved at the grassroots level. He served as the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer for the USTA for five years, during which time a significant number of positive measures were initiated to help the growth of the game. Lee has been ranked as high as #2 in Texas in singles four times and #10 nationally in his age division. He was ranked in doubles as high as #1 in Texas in two age divisions simultaneously and #2 nationally in his age division.

arriett Peterson Hulbert is considered by many to be one of the most influential women in the Texas community tennis family. Born in Chicago, she received her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in biology. Harriett began playing tennis in Wichita, Kansas in the late 1960’s but it wasn’t until her husband and family moved to Houston that she would join the Houston Racquet Club and begin her life long service to the game. In the mid 1970’s, the Houston Tennis Association recruited many volunteers and Harriett was a perfect match. While raising her four children, she began her lengthy tenure with the HTA by volunteering to run junior tournament sites and serving as the President for two years. In 1984, she would accept the position of assistant executive director, a position she would continue to hold until 1986 when she assumed full responsibility for the HTA as its TennisLife magazine

Jeff Moore

J

eff Moore has mentored and coached young people since he began his career in 1974. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Moore received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Redlands in 1974 and went on to receive his master’s in education in 1990 from the University of Texas. He would begin his coaching career due to his mentor and coach, Jim Verdieck, coaching the University of Redlands, University of Colorado and at the University of Texas. At Texas, he would leave his permanent mark on the women’s tennis program and help them achieve 23 straight NCAA appearances, 20 NCAA Top Ten Teams, 3 NCAA Final Four Teams, 2 NCAA Finalists Teams, and 2 NCAA Championship Teams. His team won seven Big 12 Conference tournament titles. His players have earned forty-four All-American Conference honors under his guidance and support. He has been involved with the ITA board of directors, NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee chair, NCAA Women’s Tennis Committee chair and has been a speaker and presenter for the USTA, USPTA, USPTR, and ITA events. He has received the Conference Coach of the Year 10 times, Southwest Conference Coach of the Year 6 times, National Coach of the Year in 1993 and University of Texas Hall of Honors recipient in 2002.

Executive Director, a position she would hold until her retirement in 2007. Harriett has also served USTA Texas for twenty plus years and has received numerous awards including the HTA Sampson Award, W. T. Caswell Award, Tournament Director of the Year and the USTA Texas Lifetime Achievement Award. Currently, Harriett is a member of the USTA Texas Awards Committee and the Junior Tennis Council, as well as, a certified USTA umpire and referee.

ichey Reneberg began playing tennis in Texas when he was nine. He attended Westchester High School in Houston and ranked #1 in Texas from age 10-18. At Southern Methodist University, he was ranked All-American three times and ranked number one collegiate player in the country. Numerous people including Bob Atkins, Jim Parker, Chris Bovett, Dennis Ralston, John Fielding, Tommy Tucker, Jose Higueras and Tom Gullikson have coached him and in 1987 he began his professional career in tennis, which he pursued for 13 years. He reached #20 in the world in singles in 1991, 1996 and in 1992; he won the US Open in doubles and reached the finals at Wimbledon. He was also ranked #1 in doubles in 1993. It was after this that he won the Australian Open in doubles in 1995 and represented the United States in the Davis Cup 5 times and in the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. Since his retirement from tennis, he has been working in finance.
