Term 2 Week 2 Friday 13th May 2016 From the Principal It has been another interesting week in the life of Oropi School community with a wide range of activities going on. SENCO (Special Education Needs Coordinators) trip to Japan Mr Turner and Mrs King will be back at school later next week from Japan. They are currently in Hitachi, Tauranga’s sister city, with a group of SENCOs from other schools in Tauranga that belong to the Education Tauranga Group (this includes Oropi School). Part of the sister city agreement has been to ensure such a trip occurs so Japanese and New Zealand teachers can connect to learn from one another about how each educational system caters for special educational needs in schools. This is a rich learning opportunity for our teachers and the Japanese teachers as it is learning about this aspect of school operations from a different cultural lens, which is a very important aspect of education in the 21st century (this is an area I researched while on study leave last year). It also connects with our Asia Awareness strategy. Adam and Amanda have been presenting to Japanese teachers about the New Zealand system, attending workshops and meetings arranged by Japanese teachers and the Hitachi Ministry of Education team, meeting the Hitachi Mayor and other dignitaries. Before they head back to New Zealand, they will also visit two schools in Tokyo. They will be sharing their ideas and new knowledge on their return. Coding and Programming I would like to thank Patrick Van Rinsvelt for the time he gives to the school in working with students on coding and programming. He is currently working with a group of Y7&8s on programming and coding using “Arduino” – an open source electronics platform. The children are making interactive projects using coding and programming. The current project is creating a system where coloured lights glow to indicate certain air temperatures. An after school code club will be starting up again as well, as we had operating in 2015. More information will come about this opportunity.

An exciting aspect of this initiative is we will be entering Year 6-8 children in the Young Innovators Competition later in the year so we will have quite a large number of children in this. Great 21st century skills for our senior students! For this competition the children have to design an innovative product or service. School Buses IMPORTANT As a follow on from last week’s messages with regards to roll growth, our bus runs, particularly the User Pays Bus, are nearly at capacity. Therefore, it is important that children do not swap for one-off days as we need the certainty of numbers going on each bus each day. Changes like this could have a major impact when our buses are reaching capacity. We are working with the bus company regarding bus options to cater for our numbers. All procedures and requirements are currently being met, but we need to be mindful of and planning for the Term 3-4 period when our numbers are at capacity. Have a great weekend! Kind regards Andrew King Principal Notices Board of Trustees Nominations Everyone should have received their nomination forms last week in the post. Please ensure these are received no later than Friday 20th May. Matariki Plans On Friday, the 10th of June, during week 6 of this term, the junior and senior school will be presenting an assembly in celebration for Matariki. In both assemblies there will be five awards given out per class for specific Maori values. Sports Update Dear Coaches, Managers, team members and supporting parents/caregivers The staff at Oropi School would like to thank you for your time and effort assisting with coaching or managing a winter sports team and/or transporting and supporting your child to and from practises and games throughout the next two terms. We appreciate the commitment towards your child’s growth in sporting skills, values and the character building they will develop during this experience. We wish you all the best for your upcoming games. We hope that all participants and their supporters are positive role models for Oropi School and ‘Be All You Can Be’ on and off the field. We would love to share your successes and challenges with the school and wider community, so could the coaches or managers please email the office your weekly results, who the team versed and outstanding efforts on the day. We intend to share the successes in assemblies on a Monday morning and in the school newsletter. In the unlikely event of an issue occurring on or off the field which needs to be discussed or addressed further, please do not hesitate in contacting either myself or Sarah Weston. Have a superb sporting season and enjoy watching your children grow. A senior management member will endeavour to come along to some games to support the teams. Sign Language Week

On Tuesday we had two visitors from NZSL week visit our school. They taught us sign language. Some people are deaf and can’t hear, so they have to use sign language to talk to each other. We learnt to sign the colours in the rainbow, the alphabet letters, some animal names and the numbers to 10. We loved learning sign language and want to learn more. By Kiwi class.
