Keep these tips in mind as you welcome kids to the workshop and explore the story together.

Open the Bible (10 minutes) Ten Men Healed Storytelling I am excited to share a story with you about Jesus. There are lots of exciting things in our lives. What do you get excited about? Allow time for kids to offer ideas. You do have exciting things going on. In today’s story, one man got really excited. Let’s find out why! Open your Spark Story Bibles to the story called Ten Men Healed starting on page 390. Read the story aloud, stopping to allow kids time to engage in the story in the following ways: •

Page 390-391, “Ten men—some missing their fingers and toes—tried to warn Jesus.” Can you count all ten faces that Jesus saw? Make the faces you see them making. How do you think they look? (afraid, sad)

Page 392, “They were healed!” Can you count the ten men running? Count together.

Page 393, “His voice filled the morning. ‘Pra-a-a-ise God!’ he shouted as he ran as fast as his ten toes could carry him.” Why is the man on the dusty ground? (He is showing respect and praise for Jesus.) Let’s shout his praise together: Praa-a-ise God! Repeat a few times.

So Jesus healed how many people? (ten) How many came back to thank him for the healing? (one) Who do you think Jesus wants us to be like? (the one who came back) Yes, and that man who came back was so excited to thank Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus loves us and saves us. That’s exciting, and we can show our excitement, too!

Activate Faith (25 minutes) Cheer for God Set Up: Cut cardboard into 3 ½ x 2 inch (9 x 5 cm) pieces. Fold lengthwise. Each kid will need two pieces of cardboard.

Activity Instructions There was a very excited man in today’s story. We’re going to show our excitement, too! But I think we need something to help us be excited. What kinds of things help us cheer? (pom-poms, megaphones, noisemakers) You’re right! And we’re going to make some cheer-makers to help us cheer and be excited for Jesus’ miracles.

Supplies

1. Pass out a cardboard piece and twist tie to each kid. Let each kid choose two curling ribbon colors.

Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven’t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. When we give Jesus thanks, he is happy. The man in the story can teach us a lot about how we should give thanks for all we have. Can you name some things that you have been given by God? Allow time for kids to offer ideas. Yes, God has given us so much, so we should always give thanks. You can take your cheermakers home and use them as you pray to God.

Prayer Time We are going to try one of these prayers right now! When I say, “We praise you,” I want you to shake your cheer-makers and jump as you say, “Yay, Jesus, Yay!” Let’s pray: Dear Jesus, We loved learning the story of the ten men you healed. We praise you. (Yay, Jesus, yay!) We are excited about the one man who came back to thank you. We praise you. (Yay, Jesus, yay!) Help us be like that man. We want to give you thanks every time we see that you’ve given us a blessing. We praise you. (Yay, Jesus, yay!) Amen.

Open the Bible (10 minutes) Ten Men Healed Storytelling Have you ever given someone a present and he or she didn’t thank you for it? Tell us about it. Allow time for kids to share stories. When we give people presents, we want them to like the presents. We want them to be happy. When they don’t say thank you, we wonder if they liked it. It can make us feel bad. We are going to explore a story today where there were nine men who didn’t say thank you after Jesus had given them the gift of healing.

Let’s open our Spark Bibles and read it. Look it up: Luke 17:11-19. Ask for volunteers to read the story aloud. Discuss the following questions. •

Do you know why the people with leprosy kept their distance from Jesus? (Leprosy was a contagious disease and they were forbidden to come near people who didn’t have it.)

Why do you think that nine of the healed men didn’t come back to thank Jesus?

How do you think Jesus felt about them not thanking him?

Ten Men Healed — 21

How does the one man who comes back behave? (He shouts in a loud voice; he throws himself down on the ground in front of Jesus.)

How do you think Jesus felt about this man?

What did Jesus say about this man’s faith? (His faith made him well.)

We can learn a lot from this story. Jesus is very kind to all of these sick men and yet only one thanks him. This man is blessed by Jesus and goes on his way as a well person. It reminds us how important it is to thank God, to be grateful for all that we have been given. Have kids place Spark Bible Stickers in their Spark Bibles.

Activate Faith (25 minutes) Groovy Gratitude Journals We can teach ourselves to be more thankful to God. Like with anything else, practice helps. So we are going to make Groovy Gratitude Journals. In them, you can write about, draw, or paste things that you are thankful for every day.

Spark Resources

Give each kid a small spiral notebook. We’ll begin our Groovy Gratitude Journals by writing our names and creating a thankfulness entry for today. Instruct kids to write their names on the inside cover of their gratitude journals. God knows each of us by name, so use your name to claim your gratitude journal. Then take some time to brainstorm what kids might add as today’s entry. Each day when you write in your gratitude journal, try to fill a whole page with drawings, words, or souvenirs to show what you were thankful for that day. Let’s start with our entries today. Allow time for kids to make their first entry.

Small spiral notebooks (approximately 4 x 8 in [10 x 20 cm]), 1 per kid Magazines Craft glue Craft foam Permanent markers Sequins Fake fur Scissors Various craft supplies

For a Groovy Gratitude Journal to really be groovy, you need to make it your own. You can use the supplies here today to decorate the cover of your journal. Think about how it can show who you are and what you are thankful for. Allow time for kids to use all supplies to decorate the front and back covers of their journals.

Supplies

Have kids share their Groovy Gratitude Journals with the class. Our journals can show that we are thankful for all that Jesus gives us.

Prayer Time For our prayer today, we’re going to be noisy like the man in the story. We’ll stand in a circle and each person will thank God for something, then we’ll clap and cheer for God, like it is a standing ovation. When all have finished their word of thank you, lead them in the Lord’s Prayer. End with a resounding AMEN!

Open the Bible (10 minutes) Ten Men Healed Storytelling Today let’s start by reading a story from our Bibles. It is called Ten Men Healed. If you have a Spark Story Bible, it is on page 390. If you have a Spark Bible, you can find it in Luke 17:11-19. Once everyone has found the story in the respective Bibles, invite volunteers to read each version aloud.

Now let’s imagine that we are those lepers who met Jesus. They must have felt sad to be so sick. Let’s stand up and walk around like we are sad. But I want you to be so sad that you walk lower and lower until you are crawling on the ground. Allow time for kids to complete the action. Now that you are on the ground, I want you to sit down and pretend to cry loudly. Allow time for kids to complete the action. You are really good at showing sadness! Now Jesus has just told us to go show ourselves to the priest. Let’s run from one part of the room to another. Show them where they will be running, then do it together.

Wait! You discover you are no longer sick. You are excited. Do a happy movement to show how jazzed you are about this. Have them do this. Now let’s pretend we are each the one man who comes back to thank Jesus. Lie down on the floor with your face down. This is known as “prostrating yourself,” and that’s what the man in the story did to show thankfulness and respect for Jesus. Have them do this. Then have them get up. You can see how good Jesus was to heal these men now, can’t you? But only one remembered to thank Jesus. Which one of these people do you think God wants us to be like? (the one who thanked Jesus)

Activate Faith (25 minutes) Tree of Thanksgiving Set Up: Cut card stock into 5 x 5 inch (13 x 13 cm) pieces, several per kid. Activity Instructions When we give God thanks, our faith grows. We are each going to make a Tree of Thanksgiving to remember to keep our thankfulness growing. 1. Give each kid a tree branch and a pot. Have them crumple and stuff newspaper around the base of the branch to secure it in the pot. 2. Pass out stamps and stamp pads. Give kids a few minutes to decorate their pots with stamps. 3. Give kids a few 5 x 5 inch (13 x 13 cm) pieces of card stock and a pencil. Have them draw simple shapes like circles, hearts, stars, and so on until they fill the page. On each shape, have them write something for which they are thankful. Using the supplies provided, allow time for them to decorate each shape. 4. Have kids cut out each shape with scissors and punch a hole in the top with the hole punch. 5. Using a chenille craft stem for each shape, have kids attach it to the tree branch as an ornament.

Prayer Time For our closing prayer, we will stand around our trees. I’ll go to each one and read one of the ornaments, and we’ll all throw our hands into the air and shout, “Thank you!” Some kids may have written personal things on their ornaments, so be sensitive as you choose an ornament from each tree. At the end, say amen and have them all clap loudly.
