Strategic Plan

A strategic plan describes the context or situation in which your congregation operates, sets the congregation’s goals and directions, and guides the allocation of financial and human resources to achieve those goals. It is an important capacity building tool that can help you be more sustainable and have far greater opportunities to access funds. In total, a strategic plan should be around 10-12 pages long. Your strategic plan should include clear and concise information regarding the following core components:  Introduction  Mission  Vision  Environmental Analysis (your internal and external environment, stakeholders)  Management (congregational structure, governance).  Objectives  Strategies  SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats)  Financial plan (including budget)  Strategic and Operational Plan (program of activities)

The Mission and Vision

In one page Mission Statement Provides the opportunity for people to understand what your congregation does, its purpose and its existence. It is important you can clearly define who you help Describe your beliefs, aspirations and values Vision “Where there is no vision the people perish” Proverb 29:18 When outlining your vision it is important to describe it well as it has the ability of inspiring many people.

Environment Analysis

One page describing the environment The purpose of this analysis is to identify the ways changes in the environment can directly or indirectly influence the congregation. The environment can be your local community or your country. Internal environment - the conditions, events, and factors inside a congregation that influence what it does. External environment – the conditions, events, and factors outside a congregation that determine its opportunities and risks. These are examples: Influencer Political

SWOT Analysis

A SWOT analysis is used to understand your internal strengths and weaknesses and your external opportunities and threats. How to do a SWOT Analysis A SWOT analysis is a planning tool. It stands for:  Strengths  Weaknesses  Opportunities  Threats Strengths: What are we good at? What is good about what you are doing - is it people, location, reputation? What do you need to do to improve these even more? How can you do better? Weaknesses: Where could we improve? What holds us back from success? Opportunities: What things could you do? What’s happening in your community or the world that could add to what you do? Threats: What might stop you from achieving your objectives? Consider things such as changes to government policy and funding. Strengths Weaknesses   
