Anwendungsbereich

Field of application
TEDS stands for ”Transducer Electronic Data Sheet”. An electronic data sheet which enables the measuring amplifier to be set up automatically is stored in this module’s memory. A suitably equipped amplifier imports the transducer characteristics (electronic data sheet), translates them into its own settings and measurement can start. To be able to use this functionality, the module must be inseparably connected to the transducer in accordance with these Mounting Instructions. Integration into the transducer cable is therefore not a practical option in transducers with cables which are not connected directly to the transducer (i.e. by connector). special circuitry (patent pending) enables existing cables to be used for TEDS data transmission, i.e. the same cables can be used as with transducers without TEDS. Toggling between Measure mode (cable transmits analog measurement signal) and Data mode (cable transmits digital TEDS date) is possible.

Installation and connection
3.1 Requirement for the amplifier The prerequisite for using the TEDS functionality is support for the TEDS interface and for the data format as defined by IEEE standard 1451.4. In addition the wiring must meet the specifications in these mounting instructions. Depending on the amplifier and transducer circuit, we must distinguish two variants: HBM’s “Zero wire” circuit (see chapter 3.2) and the connection using two separate cable cores (see chapter 3.3). Transducers fitted with TEDS can be connected and operated like conventional transducers without restriction, even in the case of amplifiers that do not support TEDS. In this situation it is simply that the TEDS added function cannot be used. TEDS
3.2 Installation and connection for amplifiers using HBM’s “Zero wire” circuit A special circuit (patent applied for) makes it possible to use the existing cable leads for transferring the TEDS data. This means that the same cables can be used as for transducers that do not have TEDS. This is done by switching between a measurement mode (the line transfers the analog measurement signal) and a data mode (the line transfers the digital TEDS data). Full bridge

3.2.1 Zero wire circuit for module in wide version In the case of the variants 1-TEDS-BOARD-L, 1-TEDS-DB-15P: The standard method is to mount the product in the D-sub connector (15-pin). For this method, when using a metal or metallized connector which is plugged directly into the amplifier it is important to check and confirm its EMC compliance against the specifications. • plug the motherboard between the pin rows so that the 1 mark on the motherboard is under pin contact 1 • solder the motherboard contacts marked to the corresponding contacts on the connector Connecting the transducer cable (in the case of the variants 1-TEDS-BOARD-L, 1-TEDS-DB-15P): • solder the cable leads to the motherboard and/or connector (see Fig. 3.2) • at the screw terminal which fixes the cable in the connector housing, spread out the cable shield and connect it to the connector housing (see Fig. 3.3) Module side D-sub connector

3.3 Installation and connection using two separate cable cores (amplifiers without “Zero wire” circuit) If used with amplifiers that do not support HBM’s “Zero wire” circuit, the TEDS module can also be accessed through two separate cable cores. This possibility for connection is used in the following cases: • Amplifiers for transducers that are not connected in a measuring bridge (e.g. HBM’s ML60B and ML460 MGCplus modules for frequency measurement) • Third-party amplifiers that do not support HBM’s “Zero wire” circuit • To provide compatibility with mixed systems, some HBM amplifiers for transducers with a bridge circuit also support this possibility for connection (e.g. MGCplus with AP01i, AP455i connection boards).

Specifications
Type
TEDS memory module in the transducer cable
Data transfer To switch from measurement mode to data mode in order to transfer TEDS data
Apply a supply voltage between one of the excitation voltage lines (HBM designation: 2) and the associated sense lead (HBM designation: 2‘ ). The sense lead then acts as the signal lead and the excitation voltage line as the ground. If this voltage is no longer present, the module switches to measurement mode, in which it no longer interacts with the excitation voltage and the measurement signal.
