Introduction
Foundtest (M) Sdn. Bhd. was formed as an independent specialist contractor, which is a professional engineering firm specialized in providing high strain dynamic load testing, analysis and consulting services for the piling work industry. Dynamic pile testing is performed by well-trained and experienced engineers using a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) at site and pile wave analysis will be carried out on the signal acquired by using Pile Wave Analysis Program by Characteristic (WAPC) / Case Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP)..
Dynamic pile testing technology had been introduced to the industry for more than 30 years. This time and cost saving method of pile testing has been eventually getting popular and is widely recognized nowadays. The American Society of Testing and Materials has developed a standard (ASTM:D4945) for the performance of dynamic load test. It is a very cost-efficient tool used to replace the time consuming conventional static load test in determination of pile capacity.
PDA is a very powerful tool in monitoring the response of a pile subjected to hammer impact applied at the pile head. The response is measured in terms of force and acceleration close to the pile head.
Other than determination of pile capacity, the
behaviour during the pile installation works, such as the pile integrity, driving stresses and the energy transmitted to the pile.
Once the pile wave analysis is completed, the full
report will present the predicted static load-settlement behaviour and the pile capacity distribution among the pile shaft and pile toe. All these information are very useful in assessment of the pile capabilities by the engineers.

Dynamic Pile Testing Equipments
High strain dynamic pile testing is perform by using PDI-PAX 8 series pile driving analyzer and CAPWAP analysis program to determine the mobilized capacity of a test pile. PAX-8 series include:- Pile driving analyzer - 2 strain transducers - 2 accelerometers - 1-4 cable - 20m extension cable
The combination of the calibrated sensors and the latest analysis program provides a high accuracy and reliable test results.

Dynamic Load Test Preparation

Pile head must been explore at approximately 0.5m from the ground level. It is to ensure that it has sufficient spacing to allocate the sensors and to avoid any obstruction endangering the sensors or cable during testing (figure 1).

An appropriate piling hammer is required for testing purpose until the final result is obtained.

Most of all, the safety of the test personal shall be ensured.

Testing Procedures Dynamic testing procedure involves: -
Drilling 3 appropriate sizes of holes or welding steel plate with the holes on both sides of a test pile (figure 1) at a distance of 2 times diameter of the pile or 0.5m from the pile head for bolts to attach sensors. The purpose of having sensors on both sides is to obtain the average reading and eccentricity in order to eliminate hammer alignment effect.

Two strain transducers and two accelerometers will then attach on both sides of the pile during initial driving or restrike testing (Figure 2). Stress wave generated by hammer impact on pile top will be recorded in terms of force (detect by transducers) and acceleration (detect by accelerometers).

The signal captured will be presented in a graph as force curve and velocity curve and is stored in the pile driving analyzer for later analysis purpose (Figure 3).

Result Interpretation and Analysis
By computation from the pile driving analyzer on force and velocity curve recorded, a lot of useful information can be provided on site as preliminary results. These results include: -
Pile capacity at the time of testing by CASE method. (RMX) o Capacity predicted by assuming appropriate soil damping factor (Jc), young modulus (Em) and wave speed (Ws).

Pile integrity, location of damage (if any). o A significant velocity curve reflection prior time of 2L/C indicates discontinuity of pile. The location of damage can be determined by back calculation of t2 - t1 = 2L/C. Where: t1 = Time at first velocity peak (ms) t2 = Time at significant velocity reflection occur. L = Pile length (m) C = Wave speed (m/s)

Pile top compression stress during pile driving. o In order to limit the possibility of pile top damage at the time of testing, pile top stress must be kept within certain bounds. It can be derived by taking maximum force applied to the pile top (FMX) divided by cross sectional area of the pile. o FHWA recommended driving stresses Pile Type Steel Prestressed Concrete Precast Concrete Notes:

A representative blow will be selected for further analysis seeking for:

Portion by portion skin friction distributed at pile shaft.

Final Reporting
The testing firm shall provide a full engineering report on the pile integrity test performed, normally within ten days upon the completion of testing. The report shall include the following: -
