Technical Reference: Internet Browser Configuration August 2009 This document recommends PC and Macintosh browser settings to be configured for general use with Campus.

PC Browser Settings This section reflects the suggested browser settings for using Campus in a Windows environment. Browsers should be kept current by applying service packs and updates as provided by the operating system. Campus currently supports both the Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers on the PC platform.

Internet Explorer Settings (PC) On the Windows environment, Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and higher are supported. On the Vista operating system, Internet Explorer versions 7.0 and higher are supported. NOTE: The names and locations of settings may vary slightly across versions (the following were based off of IE 8 on a Windows environment). To access the browser settings, navigate to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. The following settings are recommended:

General Settings ƒƒ Click the Settings button of the Browsing History section. On the Temporary Internet Files dialog box, set the Check For Newer Versions of Stored Pages option to Every Time I Visit the Webpage.

Security Settings ƒƒ Click the Custom Level button. Locate the Downloads section. Enable both the Automatic Prompting for File Downloads and the File Download options.

Privacy Settings ƒƒ The privacy setting for the Internet zone should be set to Medium. ƒƒ The Pop-up Blocker section should allow pop-ups to the Campus site in one of the following manners: ÇÇ The Turn On Pop-Up Blocker checkbox is not flagged (allowing all pop-ups from all sites), OR ÇÇ The Turn On Pop-Up Blocker checkbox is flagged, but the Campus website is allowed. (Click the Settings button, enter the IP address/URL and click Add to add the Campus site to the Allowed Sites list).

Content Settings ƒƒ From the AutoComplete section, select the Settings button. On the AutoComplete Setting dialog box, remove flags from the Forms and User Names and Passwords On Forms checkboxes.

Advanced Settings ƒƒ Under the Browsing settings, unmark the Use Inline AutoComplete checkbox. ƒƒ Under the Java (Sun) settings, flag the User JRE... checkbox. ƒƒ Under the Security settings, enable SmartScreen Filter to protect against phishing. Also, flag the Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 checkboxes. Campus utilizes Secure Socket Layer encryption to protect data as it travels through the Web.

Best Practice – Clear Browsing History Periodically, Campus recommends users delete cached browsing files for improved performance and heightened security. On the General tab, click the Delete button in the Browsing History section. Delete at least the Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and Passwords.

Mozilla Firefox Settings (PC) On the PC environment, Campus supports Firefox versions 2.0 and higher. To protect security, the following browser options should be configured. To access browser settings, navigate to the Tools menu and select Options. NOTE: The following settings were based off of a Firefox 3.0 configuration. The names of settings and their locations may vary slightly in other versions.

Content Settings 1. Pop-up windows must be allowed on the Campus site in one of the following manners: ÇÇ Either the Block Pop-Up Windows checkbox is left unmarked, OR ÇÇ The Block Pop-Up Windows checkbox is flagged, but the Campus website is on the Allowed Sites list when the Exceptions button is selected.

Privacy Settings 1. In the Private Data section, select Always Clear Private Data When I Close Firefox. Select the Settings button and flag (at least) the following checkboxes Saved Form and Search History, Cache, Cookies, Saved Passwords and Authenticated Sessions: NOTE: Users may select the Clear Now button, as desired.

Security Settings 1. In the Passwords section, unmark the Remember Passwords For Sites checkbox. If passwords must be remembered, flag the checkbox and then verify that Campus site being used is on the Exception list. NOTE: If the Campus site does not appear on the Exception list, click the Saved Passwords button to see if the username/password have already been stored. Delete saved usernames/passwords for the Campus site and any additional sites that should not be stored.

Advanced Network Settings 1. Verify that the network Connection Settings reflect proper district/state setup. NOTE: This setting is largely dependent on the distric/ state’s specific network configuration.

2. Click the Clear Now button to clear the network cache. Set the cached MB limit to a low number (e.g., 50 or less).

Macintosh Browser Settings This section reflects the recommended browser settings for use with a Macintosh system. Browsers should be kept current by installing updates as provided by the operating system. Campus supports Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Camino browsers on the Mac enviroment. NOTE: The names and locations of settings may vary slightly across versions.

Safari Settings (Mac) On the Mac environment, Campus supports Safari versions of 2.0.x and higher. To protect security, the following browser options should be configured on the Safari menu. 1. Turn on Private Browsing to erase cookies, auto-fill items and other cached information. 2. Campus recommends turning off the Block Pop-up Windows setting, so Campus pop-ups will be allowed. NOTE: In Safari, pop-ups are either allowed or disabled. Unlike other browsers, Safari does not allow site-by-site control of pop-ups.

3. On the Safari menu, select the Preferences option. Unflag the checkbox for auto-filling Usernames and passwords.

Mozilla Firefox Settings (Mac) On the Mac environment, Campus supports Firefox versions 2.0.0.6 and higher. To protect security, the following browser options should be configured. To access browser settings, navigate to the Firefox menu and select the Preferences option.

Content Settings 1. If the Block Pop-up Windows option is selected, the Campus site in which the user is working must be allowed. Click on the Exceptions button to verify/add the Campus site to the allowed list.

Advanced Network Settings 1. Verify that the network Connection Settings reflect proper district/state setup. NOTE: This setting is largely dependent on the distric/state’s specific network configuration.

Privacy Settings 1. Set Private Data Settings to Always Clear Private Data on browser close. At least the Cache, Cookies, Saved Passwords and Authenticated Sessions should be set to clear. 2. (Optional) Clear all private data by clicking the Clear Now button. 8

Security Settings 1. Verify that Passwords are NOT set to be remembered.

Camino Settings (Mac) On the Mac operating system, Campus supports Camino versions 1.0 and higher. To protect security, the following browser options should be configured:

Privacy Settings 1. Unflag the Save web form passwords in the Keychain to disable username/ password storage, OR, if the checkbox is flagged, specify the Campus website as an exclusion (so usernames/passwords are not stored).

History Settings 1. Periodically click Empty Cache to remove stored page information.

Web Features Settings 1. Unflag the Block pop-up windows checkbox, OR, if the Block pop-up windows checkbox is flagged, verify that Campus is on the Edit Pop-up Exceptions List (allowing Campus pop-ups).
