WADERS Of The LOST PARK And Other Zany Adventures

Notes About The Music

Ah, what can one say of our friend Zippy Toad? A heroic soul, a toad about town, and a connoisseur of fine flies. We all need a good silly song now and again, and this one certainly fills the bill. There are two soprano parts of varying difficulties, and two different tempos. You will find a WIDE array of recordings that let you play it with and without the theatrical introduction. You may want to stage it with your own announcer. As our friend Zippy would say, “Boing! Boing!... Ohhhhh.”

You either love Zippy or you hate him. Okay, “hate” may be a little strong. It’s more like, “You either love him, or you don’t let your students play his tunes.” That’s okay, Zippy understands that he is an acquired musical taste. But we can virtually guarantee that if you share this tune with your players, they will have fun with it and will want to play it often. (Hmmm, does that statement encourage you to share it or frighten you off? It’s a mystery.) And we have a theory... a big BOING theory. It goes something like this: It is that energetic hopping that gives Zippy his flawless singing tone, that emotional twang, that quintessential buoyancy. (Just listen to his soulful closing “boing.”) Which is to say Boing = Bounce2 We hope that this wasn’t too scientific for you. Besides, it’s just a theory.

Ah, ’tis spring, and a young toad’s fancy turns to, uh, flies, and beetles... and once he’s through munching, other toads – the cute, sweet-smelling (?) ones. While we don’t suggest making this tune an excuse for the study of the birds and the bees, and the toads, you can consider playing it around Valentine’s Day. And while we further don’t necessarily suggest you invite the science teacher in to verify things, trust us when we say that this is a realistic recording of the courtship ritual of that rarest of toads, the zippoidia boingaboingallis. Our conglomeration of a tune is fairly easy to learn, and should be a lot of fun for young players. We’ve tried to keep it light and funny, and it is a good addition to the adventures of our toady friend. There are a few things of interest in this outing. For one thing, Zippy has a new friend, the amphibian femme fatale, Zuzu. Poor Zippy, he didn’t have a chance. From the first “Boing,” he was smitten. Then there is the music. While it is another take on that retro disco style, we have added some interesting musical motifs to move the plot along. In the intro, you find a short homage to Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, with a short snippet that fits within the range the recorders can play. As the song moves along, the basic melody is built on longer notes, giving the two parts a chance for simple harmony. But weaving in and out of the melody is a double-time rendition of the old folk tune, “A Frog Went A-Courtin’.” For this tune, we are keeping the options simple. Recorder 1 features the notes low D, E, G, A, B, C, and D. Recorder 2 only requires G, A, B, and C. The recordings allow you to perform the work with either part, or ideally, both parts. Both the full performance and the accompaniment tracks are featured on the recording. 13

Do The

Zippy Toad Slide

He can sing... he can dance... he can leap tall lily pads in a single bound. What a toad! In this song, though, he does something he’s never tried to do before: sing actual pitches! (And if you knew the exact technology we use in getting this guy to the recording, you’d almost be impressed! He nearly sprained his toady uvula.) But we digress. You can use this song in a number of ways. If used one way, you can play along with Zippy, and when you come to the section at bar 24, you can have the students carefully take their recorders in hand and do some dance moves. Let the kids design the moves... you can always assume that they will be more up to date than any of us. If this goes over well, maybe divide the class into several groups, each working out its own moves, then have a friendly competition. You know, Dancing With The Toads! For this purpose, we recommend using the second version of the background tracks, track 18. We also give you a way to improve listening and rhythm skills by using the section at 24 to do a musical Q & A with Zippy. In track 17, this section features Zippy singing (???!) pitches and rhythms. See the full score (available as a download) for a picture of the things Zippy is trying to sing. You can actually sing or play these pitches and rhythms yourself. If you take this approach, use track 18. Adapt this exercise any way you like, adding your own pitches and rhythms. The students’ parts are blank here for maximum flexibility. We hope you enjoy this tune. Zippy did, even though he was a little under the weather when he sang it. We’re feeding him nice warm chicken/beetle soup, so he should be ready for his next tune soon.

For this Zippy production, we decided to keep life simple. Here, we think we have found a nice tempo and two parts that work together well. Zippy wants your job! - Well, maybe that’s overstating it a little bit, but aside from having a fun tune to play during the holiday season, we thought that it would be good to play question and answer with your favorite toad... or Zippy, whichever comes first. Anyway... the section beginning at bar 15 features two bar echoes, where Zippy and the funky 14

ensemble play a rhythm and then your students play the echo. (Hopefully they will be more precise than our toady virtuoso.) At a certain point in your lesson, fairly early on, consider having your students do the echoes without looking at their parts, or at least while looking at you, not their music. Perhaps the best way to get the most out of this activity would be to do this the first time the students hear the tune. Have them listen along, telling them that at a certain time they will need to do some echoes of the rhythms they hear. Note that the rhythms evolve naturally, with just one rhythmic element changing from phrase to phrase. Once your students are playing from the music, have them study the rhythms answering, “How is bar 16 different than bar 18?” or “What is the difference between bar 20 and bar 22?” So have fun with Zippy and his friends, and be careful of those jingle toads at the nearest icy pond. They can distract you from your skating!

In this fun tune, Zippy has traded the swamp for a surfboard at the beach. The song is fairly straightforward, with two recorder parts: part 1, which requires the notes low D, low E, G, A, B, C, D; and part 2, which can be performed with just G, A, and B. In a couple of places, the students get to yell “CowaBoinga!” along with Zippy, and at bar 25, the players play question and answer with Zippy on his signature toad rhythm.

There’s more to find online… The piano/recorder score for each tune in this collection – complete with a color title graphic – is available as an extra online. To add a little “zip” to your classroom, we have also created color versions of the recorder parts in case you want to print them out for your students. We’ve even created a Zippy-themed fingering chart for you to display. You’ll find all of these extras at:
