Teacher’s Day Celebration By Angel (P5) th On Friday the 13 January, Anglo celebrated Teachers’ Day. It was a short celebration which was hosted by Mr. Ricky. There were basketball matches, roses given and the best of all – The Fabulous Game Show.
The basketball match was divided into two groups: students and teachers. The students were coached by Mr. Martin, the school’s basketball coach. The teachers planned the games themselves. The game show was hosted by Jasandra and Name, our councilors from Year 4. The hosts would pull a teacher’s name out of a hat. The called teacher would answer the questions. Any questions that have been answered wrongly, a point would be deducted. There were four teams, Red, Blue, Yellow and Green! Great job teachers! Another part of Teachers’ Day was giving pens and roses to the teaching staff. The prefects gave bookmarks that the students made but each teacher was only allowed to have one bookmark! Well, teachers, if you ever need another bookmark, you’ll have to make one yourself! Next came the merry‐go round. It was when the teachers stood up, formed a line and students walked past and shook their hands
or gave them roses. I hope the teachers, didn’t throw them away, because they were really expensive; 50 baht apiece to be exact! All the money raised went to charity. Although it was Friday the 13th, teachers, it was still your big day. We thank you; teachers; your open hearts and international experiences have given Anglo huge benefits and fresh opportunities to learn in ways not available in other Singaporean curriculum schools. We hope you enjoyed this small token of appreciation from the students.

Ashfall written by Mike Mullin
Under the bubbling hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park in the states of Montana and Wyoming in the USA is a super‐volcano. This of course is a scientific fact, even though most people do not know it is there. The caldera of this ancient volcano is so large that it can only be seen from a plane or satellite. It just could be overdue for an eruption, which would change the landscape and climate of our planet.
Ashfall is the story of Alex, a teenage boy left alone for the weekend while his parents visit relatives. When the Yellowstone super‐ volcano erupts unexpectedly, Alex is determined to reach his parents. He must travel over a hundred miles in a landscape transformed by a foot of ash and the destruction of every modern convenience that he has ever known, and through a new world in which disaster has brought out both the best and worst in people desperate for food, water, and warmth. With a combination of nonstop action, a little romance, and very real science, this is a story that is difficult to stop reading and even more difficult to forget.
This is another book that I highly recommend to more advanced young readers in upper primary or secondary school.

Deviant Art By: Jinnawat (P6)
With all the things that you can do on the Internet, websites on art are certain to be prominent. We know that artistic expression is a very basic and important aspect of human society. It is in fact one of the few things that separates us from the great apes! One particular website that I can highly recommend to my readership is deviantART. World Scholar’s Cup students will already be familiar with this website but I higly suggest it for all interested in artistic endeavors. At deviantART.com, you can share all types of art except music, which is a pity. However, for pictures with PG material, an account is required to view them. deviantART aims to provide a platform for any artist to exhibit and discuss works..
Works are organized in a comprehensive category structure, including photography, digital art, traditional art, literature, Flash, filmmaking, skins for applications, operating system customization utilities and others, along with extensive downloadable resources such as tutorials and stock photography. Additional utilities include journals, polls, groups and portfolios. For any interested readers, I have an account: http://dietraubenwelken.devianta rt.com Membership is free, but premium membership unlocks many privileges, such as allowing members to critique your artworks. Check it out and unlock your own artistic passions!

REELING: The Film Review Secondhand Lions
By: Sirijung (P6)
"Secondhand Lions" is an excellent movie. The story is packed with nuance. Much of the plot overlaps and blends for a harmonious whole. It is a compelling story which requires attentive viewing to follow along. Flashback scenes are intentionally cartoonish, so that the audience (character of the boy Walter, is wondering if the fantastic tales of the old uncles' adventures are real. Uncle Garth tells the stories), see them through Walter's imagination. Through his storytelling, without realizing it, Uncle Garth nurtures a creative potential in Walter (who will grow up to become a cartoonist).
Walter is unsure of himself in the beginning, but later finds his footing.
Michael Caine's accent as Uncle Garth is a Texan who has lived outside Texas for much of his life. Garth is a man who has traveled the world. Even though, as the plot continues, we don't know how much of Garth's adventurous stories are real, there is never a question of whether Garth has been outside the Texas borders. The uncles are very realistic characters, and in Texas there are many characters like them. The uncles, when they were young men, went away to find adventure, and lived on the edge for much of their lives.
Haley Joel Osment plays the role of Walter. Sometimes his voice sounds like that of a boy, sometimes like a young man.
Then they return home to retire in Texas, with plenty of money. The uncles don't say much to each other because there is no need to say much; they understand each other perfectly.
Sometimes Walter cries like a child, sometimes he is mature, as would be expected from a boy who is in the transition of becoming a man.
Although in their retirement age, they seek out reckless behavior, unwilling to sit still and get older and die boringly, unable to overtly give up on life.
Sports Talk: The Basics of Basketball Basketball is a game with fairly straightforward rules; rules that are sometimes easy to forget. You can quiz yourself on the basketball rules if you want to remember them properly. Basketball is a team sport where two opposing teams with five players each try to shoot a ball into a hoop elevated ten feet above the ground. There are two hoops on either side of the basketball court. On The Basketball Court A basketball court is basically a big rectangle divided into two equal sides by the mid‐court line. The offensive team, the team which has the ball, has ten seconds to get the ball over the mid‐ court line.
This is not exactly a "heartwarming" movie with a happy, fluffy resolution for all. The characters must make choices, and not always easy ones. The adventures don't always end with happily ever after. It is not a comedy, but it is about the depths of emotion. An older audience will probably appreciate this movie the most but I think that any kid over 10 will like it.
By: Yanjie (P6)
If it doesn't, the defensive team gets the ball. If the offensive team gets over before the ten seconds is up, they cannot go behind the mid‐court line as long as the ball is in their possession. If the offensive team does that, it is considered a 'backcourt violation'. Fouls and Violations Double Dribble: If you hold the ball with both hands to catch it after someone passes it to you, then it is not considered a foul. If you dribble the ball, then hold it, then dribble again, it's a foul. Held Ball: Sometimes, two players of opposing teams grab the ball at the same time and try to take it, and it is considered a 'held ball'.
Walter's presence suddenly requires them to adapt to new purpose, and to take care of themselves, too, as they are faced with the issue of providing appropriate male role models for Walter.
The referee steps in and stops the action before it gets violent, and awards it to one team or the other in a rotating basis. Travelling/Walking: If you take more than a 'step and a half', you are travelling or walking (basically the same thing). Moving your pivot foot after you have stopped dribbling is also travelling. Time Restrictions: A player cannot hold a ball for more than five seconds, and if that happens, the other team gets the ball. There are also shot‐clock restrictions for free shots, but there are the same consequences. I hope that my readers have learned a bit about the fantastic game of basketball. Now, get out there in the court and play!
