Interested in photography? So are we! We invite you to join us sometime...

Jayne Britton

The members of Tandridge Photographic Society meet on Thursday evenings at 8pm in the Small Hall (at the rear of the) Community Centre Caterham on the Hill www.tandridgephotographicsociety.org.uk

An invitation to… …visit our website and find out about what we do …check out our programme and see what interests you …visit one of our exhibitions and see what interests us …visit one of our open days and find out more in person

…come as a visitor to one of our regular Thursday evening meetings and… …hear from our visiting speakers about the photographs that they produce ...see top travel photography by local experienced photographers …talk to TPS members about your photography and theirs

About TPS… TPS was originally formed as the Caterham Community Camera Club in 1964 by the Caterham Community Association. We changed our name to the Tandridge Photographic Society in 1999, to reflect our main membership area (but members from other area are welcome). Caterham has had a camera club for many years - there was an active club in the early 1900's. The society is friendly and informal, and aims to help members expand and improve their photographic skills by sharing skills, knowledge and ideas. Society members' interests cover all aspects of still photography, and we are more than willing to give advice and guidance to new members. In addition to the September to May Thursday programme, we meet socially during the summer, have photographic outings, hold exhibitions and take part in special projects (such as our theatre photography with the Orpheus Centre). Our Thursday programme includes internal competitions for both monochrome and colour prints as well as transparencies. The society also competes in external competitions: both friendly with other local clubs; and in the Surrey Photographic Association's Inter-Club Competition. Members benefit from the use of the society's equipment purchased over the years, in particular studio lighting and a digital camera. Prospective new members are welcome to attend a few meetings to see what we do and visitors are welcome to any of our meetings. The society is a member of the Caterham Community Association, Surrey Photographic Association (SPA) and Tandridge Community Arts (TCA), and is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB), via the SPA.

A note from our Chairman The Tandridge Photographic Society has a culture that is first friendly and secondly passionate about creating better pictures. We enjoy each other’ s company and we would like to enjoy yours too. We look forward to a Thursday night because it is an opportunity to be immersed in a group whose combined experience of all things photographic provides a reservoir of skill and creativity from which we can all draw something valuable. But don’ t be misled by this laid-back, relaxed veneer. When it comes to the competitions, which are the life blood of most clubs, the advanced contenders are as eager for high marks as the newcomers. We have a cross section of enthusiasts whose interests cover all subjects from portraiture, architecture through landscape to natural history, macro and even the occasional scientific record. The competition entries reflect this broad range. In the digital versus film debate (if a debate is still underway) the club now has a majority of digital photographers although film still plays an important role for many and for a few it remains their exclusive medium of choice. Most of those who use digital cameras have evolved from a sound background in wet darkroom techniques and bring with them to digital working the same search for perfection that kept them up to their elbows in fixer a few short years ago. I have been privileged to be chairman of the club for two years and will soon be handing the role onto someone else. The committee is dedicated, energetic and enthusiastic, but the club is small enough for every member to have a voice and for that voice to be able to influence the direction in which the club develops. However, if you are the sort of member that prefers to contribute subtly from the sidelines then you are very welcome too. We look forward to seeing you on a regular basis. Marcus

Meet the Committee… The TPS Committee is formed at the AGM, held in May, and meets periodically throughout the year to discuss organisation of upcoming events, the programme for the following year and development of the clubs events and facilities for members. Chairman

Marcus Scott-Taggart

Marcus was a professional scientific, technical & commercial photographer from 1967 until 1980 when his career took him away from taking pictures into the realms of the digital preparation of pictures for printing (in books magazines & newspapers). He retained an interest in all things photographic and now spends his spare time trying to reach the same high standard that he regularly sees in his new role as an SPA competition judge. email: [email protected]

Gerard Mulryan

Gerard joined the Society in 1997 and has served as Programme Secretary for three years. He has fairly catholic photographic tastes but is particularly interested in people, travel, architecture and patterns. Gerard's favourite medium is slide film but has recently dipped his toe into digital. email: [email protected]

Steve Elms

Manages the Society's correspondence and paperwork, also keeps the minutes of the AGM and Committee meetings. Movement and blur feature in most of Steve's photography. After many years of practice he feels he has almost cracked the technical aspects of this, and is about ready to tackle the artistic side. email: [email protected]

Carole Mills

Carole has been a member of TPS/CCC since 1996 and during that time been on the Committee for five years, three as Honorary Treasurer and for the last year as Programme Secretary. My photographic interests are varied but veer towards the abstract and "pattern pictures" or images with large areas of bold, bright colours. I usually take transparencies although I have produced some prints using Photoshop - I'm on a learning curve at the moment! email: [email protected]

Treasurer

Paul Knivett LRPS

I joined TPS in 2001 and have been its Honorary Treasurer since 2002/03. I gained my Licentiateship from the Royal Photographic Society in 2004 and am hoping to progress to the next level as soon as I have an appropriate body of work. I have been an amateur photographer for almost twenty years - however I am still one of the babies in the Society so don't be surprised to see me throw my toys out of the pram when I disagree with a judge's comments! I most enjoy photographing architecture and formal portraits although I'm not averse to landscapes and dramatic arts. That narrows it down a bit. I studied for a Foundation Degree in Photography and Digital Imaging from Sept '03 to June '05 and am foolishly about to try and make a living from photography. Wish me luck. email: [email protected]

Publicity Officer

Jayne Britton LRPS

Flowers and Wildlife feature strongly in Jayne's interests but her LRPS panel was on London and she is invariably involved in our Orpheus Theatre projects. Keeping in touch with the local media to promote TPS and our activities, is her role and any ideas or suggestions for new avenues of publicity are always welcome. email: [email protected]

Brian Smith

Committee Member and WebMaster - Brian Smith has been interested in photography for many years, most of which he devoted to B&W 35mm work, with a home DIY darkroom in the spare bedroom. Since 1997 when he acquired the first Epson 6colour photo printer and a film scanner he has progressively moved into digital imaging, eventually renouncing all his 35mm film equipment for a purely digital setup in 2004. email: [email protected]

TPS Programme If you would like any further information on a particular session, a chat with either a committee or other club member should help. Carole is our Programme Secretary and would welcome any feedback on the programme, either during the evening or by email on [email protected] All evening are free to members and are open to non-members with a supplementary charge of £2 to help cover venue and speaker costs. Current membership subscriptions are £35 per year or £10 per year for anyone under 18.

Quick guide to evening formats Competitions Some are one-off annual events (eg Cloquet and Alec Braid) resulting in an award for the winner with the image that's judged as best on the evening. There's also Colour Print, Monochrome (black and white) and transparency (slide film) competitions consisting of three rounds each with points accumulating over the year. All competitions are open to members only, but spectators are welcome. (See members handbook for full info and entry details.)

How to… Introduced for the 2005-2006 season, these are sessions led by a TPS member to share information on an aspect of photography with others. These will vary considerably in content and will develop over time as new areas are requested, offered and explored.

Guest speakers Our guest speakers are experienced photographers from the South East Region and Surrey in particular. Most will be long term members of another club and many have photographic distinctions to their name. Without exception they are keen photographers with a passion for their subject and the sharing of their knowledge and experience and are a valued asset to our programme.

Judges qualify through the Surrey Photographic Association (SPA) and give their time to clubs in the interest of encouraging other photographers to progress and improve their skills. All are experienced photographers and members of a Surrey Club, they see and comment on a wide variety of photography over the year which enables them to give constructive advice and positive comments on our work.

Distinctions Many of our guest speakers and judges have gained photographic distinctions, which are listed in the programme. These are usually progressive and give a guide as to the level the photographer has achieved. This is a brief guide to what some of the distinctions mean: LRPS, ARPS, FRPS - Awards from the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) (Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship) based on a panel of 10,15 or 20 images submitted by the photographer. CPAGB, DPAGB, MPAGB - Awards from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) (Credit, Distinction, Master) which can be applied for after supporting a member club for a number of years and submitting a set of prints which are judged and marked individually.

BPE 1,2,3,4,5 Crown Awards - British Photographic Exhibitions (BPE), indicates the number of points gained for photographs accepted (one point each) or being a selector (two points) in the BPE circuit of exhibitions (25, 50, 100, 200, 300 respectively) AFIAP, EFIAP, MFIAP - These are hefty distinctions from the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) 'an organisation for amateur photography throughout the world' and represent at least five years participation in national and international salons with at least 150 (AFIAP) or 300 (EFIAP) acceptances of work in salons under FIAP patronage. The MFIAP is awarded in recognition of the photographers whole achievements in artistic photography. For each distinction, in addition to evidence of the acceptances, a panel of prints is submitted for consideration. LBIPP, ABIPP, FBIPP - Qualifications from the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) (Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship) each is based on twenty images from current (last two years) assignments.
