Tampa Bay Estuary Program Bay Mini-Grant Final Report Name of Organization: Friends of Boyd Hill Nature Preserve/City of St. Petersburg Purchase Order Number: 6812

Project Completion Date: December 2015

Describe in a few paragraphs what your project accomplished and if your project was completed according to your proposed scope of work. Were you satisfied with the outcome of your project? This project was successful in the treatment of reemerging non-native invasive plants consisting mostly of syngonium, primrose willow, wild taro, and Brazilian pepper. We expanded the project area to the south and west to avoid further encroachment. These species are extremely aggressive and it quickly became apparent that many treatments will be necessary to restore this area. The swamp woodlands are well visited and we have been able to use this project as a teaching tool for water quality, water flow, and non-native species. We are continuing to monitor and retreat this area as needed. Once a balance is reached we will begin to plant the area with native plants.

Describe any changes that were made to the original scope due to unforeseen circumstances. (i.e.: not enough volunteers, rain-out, changes in prices, etc.) It has been a wet year! Treatment had to be planned around rain events because the area gets inundated fairly easily. We also had to be more selective because native plants are now emerging from the openings created by past treatments and we were careful not to hit them.

Have you attached all deliverables and final invoice with this final report? Deliverables include: one (1) hard copy of the final product such as brochures, videos, manuals and one (1) digital copy (i.e.: Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe .pdf). If your project was restoration oriented, “before and after photos” and/or a video must be included (digital format preferred).

(COMPLETE REVERSE SIDE)

Tampa Bay Estuary Program Bay Mini-Grant Final Report If your project included habitat restoration; please complete below: -Please describe the habitat area your project (examples: a mangrove shoreline; an upland area containing invasive vegetation) The project area is a hardwood swamp that contains giant leather fern, lizard tail, cypress trees, and several other native species.

-Please provide details of restoration techniques (examples: planted sea oats to enhance shoreline; removed invasive Brazilian pepper trees, debris removal from creek) Appropriate herbicides were utilized depending on the species treated. Spraying the new growth while it’s still low to the ground reduced the amount of herbicide used and collateral damage from overspray.

-Please provide the acres or linear feet/miles of area that your project restored (examples: planted 3 acres of native plants, removed 6 tons of Brazilian pepper plants, removed 50 bags of debris from creek) We retreated approximately 200 linear feet and provided an initial treatment to an additional 50 linear feet.

If your project included educational outreach; please complete below: -Please describe where your outreach took place (examples: outside, behind our school; at our facility, during a restoration event) The swamp woodland boardwalk is the closest trail to the trailhead so most of our guided hikes go out there. Each time we explain the project in detail as well as the importance of planting native plants and trees in their yards and contributing to the overall health of their environment.

-Please provide quantifiable outreach goals (examples: number of flyers distributed; number of participants, volunteers recruited). We have approximately 55,000 visitors each year. I would estimate that more than half of them visited the swamp and viewed the restoration project.

Please mail the completed final report, required deliverables and final invoice to: Bay Mini-Grants/Attn: Misty Cladas, Tampa Bay Estuary Program, 100 8th Ave. S.E., St. Petersburg, FL 33701
