TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT PBIS IN LBUSD: WHERE HAVE WE BEEN AND WHERE ARE WE GOING?

What is School-Wide PBIS? • Most importantly, PBIS is: – NOT a curriculum, intervention or practice – IS a decision-making framework that guides selection, integration and implementation of the best evidence-based practices for improving academic achievement, social competence and safety outcomes for all students.

PBIS Main Messages • Supporting social behavior is central to achieving academic gains. • School-wide PBIS is an evidence-based practice for building a positive social culture that will promote both social and academic success. • Implementation of any evidence-based practice requires a more coordinated focus than typically expected.

TOW Elementary 2014-15 PBIS GOALS

We want to decrease the percentage of physical aggression referrals by 15 percent by June 2015.. We want to reduce the number of referrals from primary grades (1st-3rd) by 15 percent by June 2015. We would like for teachers to align classroom expectations to our TOW PBIS expectations and have teachers create classroom routine matrices by Sept 2015.

TIER II /III 4. We want to create an opportunity for professional development in the use of the Check In/Check Out tool for teachers as we see a lack of fidelity in use of the CICO and other behavior modification strategies among teachers possibly due to lack of understanding about correct use.

El Morro Elementary 2014-15 PBIS GOALS Tier I 1. We want to see a 15 percent decrease in the referrals from the playground, bus and classroom which are the number one, two and three locations for our discipline referrals by increasing active supervision and increasing awareness for our teachers , bus drivers and coaches. 2. We want to see a 15 percent or more decrease in referrals for Defiance, Physical Aggression and Disrespect which are the number one, two and three reasons for referral through training with our students, staff and other support personnel. TIER II /III 3. We want to create an opportunity for professional development in the use of the Check In/Check Out tool for teachers as we see a lack of fidelity in use of the CICO and other behavior modification strategies among teachers possibly due to lack of understanding about correct use.

Thurston Middle School 2014-15 PBIS GOALS Tier I • The 2013-2014 data show disruption (including minor disruption) accounts for approximately 47% of all SWIS referrals. To decrease the number of SWIS referrals for disruption (including minor disruptions) by 10%. Tier II • The Healthy Kids Survey shows that only 21% of TMS students report that they have "Meaningful participation." To increase student connectedness and meaningful participation with adult staff at TMS. Tier III • CICO can be implemented with more fidelity by staff. Knowledge of the process of CICO varies among staff members who have not participated in the intervention previously or who are new to TMS. Increase the number of teachers and other staff members who understand the process for and goals of CICO.

Laguna Beach High School 2014-15 PBIS GOALS Tier I 1. To develop and implement a formal system to directly teach school-wide behavioral expectations (PRIDE) to all students. Tier II 2. To develop a process for aggregating discipline and other sources of student data used to identify students in need of Tier II interventions, as well as to progress monitor students already receiving Tier II supports. Tier III 3. To reduce truancy rates
