CRASH mail ARC20 Prestwick crash cover. £85

On Christmas Day 1954, Boeing 377 Stratocruiser G-ALSA was on approach to Prestwick but descended at too steep an angle and following a heavy landing the plane crashed. These five crash covers, in varying state of condition, were all on the flight and each one has the ‘Salvaged Crash Mail Aircraft Crash Prestwick 25-12-54’ cachet.

Eddie Rickenbacker led an extraordinary life. First he rose to fame as America’s most successful World War One fighter ace, racking up 26 victories, for which he received the Medal of Honour. He later established himself as an airmail pioneer, and served as head of Eastern Air Lines, one of the American ‘Big Four’ airlines.

RAILWAY AIR SERVICE On August 20th 1934 the General Post Office began transporting first class mail by air between several major U.K. cities under the name of the Railway Air Services.The RAS had been set up that March by Imperial Airways and the four biggest railway companies of the time London Midland & Scottish, London & North Eastern, Great Western Railway, and Southern Railway.
