Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation’s Fall 2011 Grants – Funded $76,916 District Wide Grants - $2,126 Sensory Motor Supports – Susanna Brown Funded tools for district occupational therapists to lend to teachers to help keep students seated and attentive in class. Materials include wiggle cushions (Disc O'sit), therapy ball "chairs", T-stools, pencil fidgets, hand fidgets, weighted lap blankets, and/or weighted vests. Fully Fund $1,626 Fine Motor Writing Supports – Susanna Brown Funded special pencil grips and writing aids for students. Pencil grips help train and support motor development of a correct grasp pattern while writing.

Partially Funded $500 of $1,123 Alder Creek Middle School - $3,519 Academic Vocabulary for English Learners – Sarah Adams Funded an Academic Language Development program which teaches 60 essential academic vocabulary and language development skills English Learners need to succeed in school settings. Curriculum covers academic, high frequency, precision and multiplemeaning words. Fully Fund $701 Scholastic Math Magazine – Betsy Hansen Funded a classroom set of Scholastic MATH magazines. Scholastic MATH is designed to weave instructional math problems into articles about current events that students are already interested in.

Yearbook Cameras – Gina Stephens Funded Nikon digital cameras for the school yearbook class. Partially Funded $500 of $970 Donner Trail - $3, 572 Challenger Space Simulation The Tahoe Truckee Airport District generously funded $500 toward each district fifth grade class to take a field trip to the Discovery Museum in Sacramento to participate in the Challenger Space Simulation. Fully Fund $500 Daily Five/ CAFE Leveled Readers – Kathee Hansen Funded leveled readers for students, which are integral to reading development. Students who are able to read high-interest fiction and non fiction books at their appropriate reading level improve decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.

Fully Fund $1,780 Environmental Science Supplies – Michelle Reed Funded environmental education supplies to enhance Yuba River Day and other outdoor education projects. Supplies include waders, garden gloves, owl pellets, weather kits, biology kits and clipboards.

Fully Fund $1,292 Glenshire Elementary – $15,626 Challenger Space Simulation The Tahoe Truckee Airport District generously funded $500 toward each district fifth grade class to take a field trip to the Discovery Museum in Sacramento to participate in the Challenger Space Simulation. Fully Fund $1,500 Movement Center Replacements – Mary Berelson Funded replacement materials for Glenshire’s movement centers. The students benefit from the movement center experiences they have by gaining control over their bodies, working in teams, and developing the muscles in their hands and "power fingers" which transfers to improved pencil grasp.

Fully Fund $154 Alphabet Take Home Bags – Margie LaPoint Funded high interest, hands-on alphabet activities which provide an opportunity for children to learn the alphabet from A-Z at home.

Fully Fund $551 Accelerated Reader Online – Teresa Ketron Funded the Accelerated Reader (AR) Online quizzes which allow students instant, up to date access to current AR quizzes. With the online system, students are able to read and test their comprehension on more than 140,000 books and parents are able to have instant access to student progress on the AR program via any online computer.

Partially Funded $2,100 of $4,217 Lexia Reading – Kathleen Gauthier Funded Lexia Reading software program for Glenshire. Lexia is an English Language Arts and English Language Development program used in the district. Fully Fund $7,883

Character Development – Suzanne Sampson Funded supplies to design and develop characters, settings and plot through the use of cartooning and claymation. Fully Fund $400

Ukulele – Claudia Waters Funded ukuleles for the school music program. Fully Fund $1,538

Differentiated Learning Game Sets for Homework – Kilty Highfill Funded games for students to take home which provide systematic daily review of concepts taught in the classroom. Parents and children enjoy these games which help in encouraging a positive homework environment. Partially Fund $1,500 of $3,224

Kings Beach Elementary - $4,672 Hands-On Language Production Center - Molly Holiday Funded hands-on learning centers for Kindergarten and first graders that will provide English Learners with materials to guide their practice of English grammar and vocabulary during the English instruction portion of the day.

Fully Funded $1,672 Literacy Enrichment for Third Grade – Julie Otis Funded bilingual books with audio cds for use in the classroom and at home. This grant will increase understanding of the Spanish language with the purchase of Spanish dictionaries, 501 Spanish verbs, and Spanish-English dictionaries. This enables students to acquire more literacy in Spanish and English while at home and in school.

Fully Fund $768 Fit-Stats: Healthy and Active Learning – Emily Hart Funded the Fit Stats program which is a web-based fitness assessment and activity tracking system that will allow TTUSD staff to monitor student fitness, activity levels and can survey parents regarding ideas and behaviors around nutrition and activity. This program is being done in partnership with TFHD.

Rosetta Stone – Jane Loomis (grant shared by KBE, THS, SHS and NTHS) Funded Rosetta Stone computer licenses (50) to be shared by four school sites. Rosetta Stone offers English Language support and academic enrichment for elementary and high school students.

Fully Fund $2,000 Living History Fourth Grade - Dawn Rye Funded supplies for the fourth grade Living History days. Materials include candlemaking supplies, corn husk dolls, needle point and leather-making supplies. Fully Fund $402 Math Magazines – Lisa McCready Funded a classroom set of Scholastic MATH magazines. Scholastic MATH is designed to weave instructional math problems into articles about current events that students are already interested in.

Fully Funded $216 Math Magazines – Danielle Karwowski Funded a classroom set of Scholastic MATH magazines. Scholastic MATH magazines are designed to weave instructional math problems into articles about current events that students are already interested in and love.

Fully Funded $292 Snow Shoes – Allison Everist Funded snow shoes and boots for North Tahoe School and High School. Supplying more snow shoes will give more options for P.E. classes. The equipment will also be shared with the science classes so they can continue to explore outdoor ecology in the winter months.

Fully Fund $4,537 Spanish Magazines – Tara House Funded two subscriptions to Spanish language magazines so the students have reading material that is at their level. These magazines could be reused for years, and would provide and inexpensive way to get reading material at the appropriate level in Spanish.

Current Events to Enhance Social Studies and Science Curriculum – Denise Caravelli Funded subscriptions to various magazines including Time for Kids, National Geographic, Ranger Rick and Kids Discover. The magazines are used as teaching tools in the classroom.

Partially Fund $200 of $416 History Alive Grant – Katie Jamison Funded History Alive: Medieval World Curriculum which offers detailed graphic organizers, interactive activities and a curriculum that is textually grade level appropriate for 7th grade world history. Partially Funded $500 of $877

Consumable Science Supplies for 6-8 Grades – Nancy McNair Funded consumable items for science programs including AlkaSeltzer, balloons, antacids, variety of liquids for acid /base testing. Partially Funded $500 of $537

Fully Funded $7,485 Portable Technology – Cameras – Jennifer McMaster Funded digital cameras to be used by students and incorporated into the daily lessons. Partially Funded $1,500 of $3,200 Reading, Science and Inquiry – Ingrid Bourke Funded science and literacy resources including books and support DVDs to enhance the current science programs being offered. The books help students' understanding of science concepts through written and oral communication.

Fully Funded $210 (Funded by the Truckee Tahoe Airport District) Truckee Elementary – $8,198 Challenger Space Simulation – Candy Blesse The Tahoe Truckee Airport District generously funded $500 toward each district fifth grade class to take a field trip to the Discovery Museum in Sacramento to participate in the Challenger Space Simulation. Fully Fund $1,500 Fourth Grade Living History – Elizabeth Ford Funded supplies for the fourth grade classes to participate in the fourth grade living history days. Supplies include materials for corn husk dolls, candle making, needlepoint and leather making. Partially Funded $500 of $592 Kilns – Kim Krengle Funded a kiln to be used for art projects at Truckee Elementary. (Requested two, we will fund one.) Partially Funded $3,200 of $6,400 T-Stools for Resource – Terri Molina Funded T-Stools which are the tool of choice when working with individuals on balance reactions, trunk control, sensory integration responses, focused attention and proprioceptive responses. T-Stools have been used in occupational therapy for students who have little to no core strength and therefore are unable to sit calmly or quietly in the classroom.

Fully Funded $176 Kindergarten Art – Marguerite Paras Funded developmentally appropriate art materials for the Kindergarten classes including a set of looms, supplies for creating sculptures, woodworking tools, wood projects, a crayon melter, and developmental scissors.

Fully Funded $753 Frog Fun Family Homework Games – Sherry Burns Sullivan Funded English Language art homework games which go home for the student to play with their family. The games reinforce material being covered in class.

Partially Funded $1,500 of $3,200 Literacy Centers – Student CD Read-Alongs – Kim Krengle Funded books on CD to develop reading skills including phonics, comprehension and fluency.

Truckee High School - $14,354 The Wolverine Newspaper – Jessica Jacobs Funded the production cost of the Truckee High Wolverine Newspaper which is produced quarterly with help from the Sierra Sun. Fully Funded $1,100 Music Instruments – Dave Green Funded instruments for the Truckee High School band programs. Partially Funded $7,500 of $23,653 Excitement in Physical Science – Paul Smith Funded equipment to allow students to see subatomic particles and be able to manipulate them.

Fully Funded $466 Ideal Gas Law Apparatus – Sue Lowder Funded Ideal Gas Law apparatus which allows students to discover the relationships between pressure, temperature and volume in gases.

Fully Funded $1,788 Challenge Day – Rachel Falk Funded Challenge Day which is an established program that creates a safer and more tolerant school community. Several goals are accomplished at Challenge Day, including: Equipping students with new communication tools, including tools for sharing emotions and feelings and empathetic listening.
