built in the 16th century of locally quarried stone and dedicated to the Polynesian deities Tane and Oro.

Taha’a (Motu Mahana) Idyllically set across an azure lagoon to the north of Huahine, Taha’a is dominated by the profile of Mount Ohiri, named for Hiro, the Polynesian god of sailors and thieves. Today, two exotic enterprises provide the islanders’ livelihoods—the production of the world’s most flavorful vanilla beans and the farming of lustrous black pearls. Spend the day on the private South Pacific paradise of Motu Mahana, where you can swim, snorkel or kayak, and enjoy a traditional Polynesian feast on the island complemented by entertainment.

Bora Bora Described as “the most beautiful island in the world” by author James A. Michener, Bora Bora is the proverbial vision of a South Seas paradise. Its distinctive black basalt peak is cloaked in a lush tropical forest and silhouetted against turquoise lagoon waters, where a coral reef and an outlying fringe of motu teem with multicolored fish. Bora Bora was settled by adventurous Polynesian mariners in the 10th century. The islanders have preserved the ways of their forebears and still

wear the traditional colorfully hand-dyed pareo or sarong. In Bora Bora’s forested interior, villagers cultivate breadfruit, coconuts and taro and preserve the ancient ruins of stone marae, the legacy of ancestral Polynesian deities.

Exotic natural beauty surrounds you in Bora Bora, where tall peaks, ideal for trail walks, and strikingly blue and turquoise lagoons, well-suited for snorkeling, are in abundance.

The pristine, sparkling waters of French Polynesia provide incredible snorkeling opportunities.

In Tetumanu, see the village’s picturesque Catholic church, made entirely of coral in the mid-19th century.

Moorea

Catholic church built entirely of coral, the first church constructed in the archipelago by European missionaries (1874). Near the village of Rotoava stands the Topaka Lighthouse, a picturesque 45-foot-tall coral stone turret.

Intriguing temples evoke Moorea’s Polynesian heritage while European churches underscore its role as the center for 19th-century missionary activity in the Society Islands. Contemporary islanders continue the ways of their forefathers, farming pineapples and papayas and crafting fine works of art from seashells and indigenous wood. In Moorea’s village of Papetoai, a unique, octagonal-shaped church is the oldest European structure in the South Seas still in use.

TUAMOTU ARCHIPELAGO Rangiroa The Tuamotus, Tahiti’s “strand of pearls” and the largest chain of islands in the world, are a remote, picture-perfect oasis of the South Seas. Comprised of more than 110 miles of tiny islet motus encircling dozens of pristine coral atolls, Rangiroa—“vast sky” in the local language—offers magnificent, unobstructed vistas in every direction. Its seemingly endless emerald green lagoon is the largest in the Tuamotus and the second largest in the world, a secluded natural aquarium that is particularly attractive to divers. The atoll also offers ideal snorkeling—observe the manta ray, the green sea turtle and the rare, endangered humphead wrasse—and a unique pink sand beach.

Fakarava The second largest of the Tuamotu atolls, Fakarava is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its lagoon’s rich ecosystem of rare endemic birds, plants and crustaceans. In Fakarava’s two villages, the local pearl and coconut farmers actively participate in conservation efforts, as their livelihood depends on sustaining these natural resources. The motu village of Tetamanu, the former capital of the Tuamotus, features a lovely

The

Lure ofthe South Pacific

Tahiti, “Queen of the Pacific,” and her sister islands— Huahine, Taha’a, Bora Bora and Moorea—have beckoned visitors ever since Captain James Cook landed here in 1769. This tropical paradise has captivated explorers and mariners, artists and writers alike—Captain Cook returned twice more, H.M.S. Bounty’s Bounty’s Fletcher Christian chose to remain for a time and Master aster Impressionist Paul Gauguin abandoned his career in France to embrace the seductive lifestyle of Polynesia. Contemporary Tahitian society was born of a unique blend of peoples originating in Southeast Asia. Among the finest sailors in the world, they used the sun, stars, ocean tides and flight patterns of birds to make their way across the sea around 2000 B.C. First settled by mariners from Samoa, the Society Islands became inhabited shortly thereafter and more than 200 years after Ferdinand Magellan sailed past, English navigator Captain Samuel Wallis became the first European to set foot on Tahiti in 1767. The next year, French explorer Louis de Bougainville arrived on the island. In addition to English, French and Polynesian heritage, the Chinese also came to Tahiti during the the late 19th century, furthering the diverse cultural blend of the island’s inhabitants. In the South Pacific, aqua- and agricultural preservation continue to encompass the everyday life and cultural traditions of these remote, unspoiled islands. Cultivation of Tahitian black pearls and their shells, vanilla bean farms and the coffee trade, copra (dried coconut) and shellfish are the island’s traditional industries and of great cultural significance here. To this day, these beguiling islands are synonymous with the world’s romantic vision of the South Seas, and they await your discovery as you experience the true essence of Tahiti, the Society Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago yourself.

DISCOUNTED RESERVATIONS: Discounts apply only to those reservations received in the offices of Gohagan in writing, accompanied by the required deposit, by July 22, 2016. In the event a “discounted” reservation must be cancelled, no “replacement” reservation can be substituted at the discounted rate. A “replacement” reservation is a new reservation and can be substituted only at the full-fare tariff. Cancellation penalties may apply. CANCELLATIONS: Cancellations for all or any part of the trip including Post Program reservation(s) will not be effective until received in writing in the offices of Gohagan. Should you have to cancel, the following terms will apply: reservation cancellation(s) are subject to a $200 ($50 Post Program) per person administrative fee from the time of booking through 180 days prior to departure; from 120 through 179 days prior to departure, $800 ($200 Post Program) per person; from 95 through 119 days prior to departure, 40% of the published full regular tariffs; from 61 through 94 days prior to departure, 60% of the published full regular tariffs; cancellations 60 days or less prior to departure, a no-show, or early return from the trip will result in forfeiture of 100% of the published full regular tariffs. In addition, any applicable airline cancellation fees, optional excursion cancellation fees and administrative fees may apply. TRIP INSURANCE: Because these cancellation policies are strictly enforced, we strongly recommend for your protection that you purchase trip cancellation insurance. In the event that you must cancel your participation in a travel program, trip cancellation insurance may be the only source of reimbursement. RATES: Prices quoted are based on fares in effect at the time of printing and are subject to change at any time. On land and/or cruise programs, even after full payment, Gohagan reserves the right to increase the tour price in the event of cost increases due to changes in supplier costs, currency fluctuations or fuel or energy surcharges and all such increases are to be paid to Gohagan upon notice to the tour participant of such increases. On programs which include Gohagan purchased interstate or international air (which originates or returns to the United States), no increased costs will be passed on after final payment except for subsequently imposed governmental tax increases.
