ear Fellow Alumni and Friends: Last year, to paraphrase Charles Dickens, was the worst of times and the best of times.
A sagging economy continued to suppress philanthropy nationwide, across the entire nonprofit sector. In particular, giving to education declined by 3.6 percent in 2009. Only 12 percent of alumni gave to their alma maters, down from 16 percent the year before. The Chronicle of Philanthropy called 2009 the worst year for giving in two decades.

Clearly, the University of New Haven is doing something right. We are an institution on the rise with a powerful story to tell, a story of investing in individual potential and changing lives. In turn, loyal alumni and friends are investing in us more than ever, despite economic challenges. The effects can clearly be seen throughout campus, in the form of new buildings and classrooms, and renovations of existing facilities. It is felt, perhaps more subtly, in the academic programs and extracurricular activities that reinforce our leadership in experiential education. Most profoundly, the results of philanthropy are written into the success stories of our students and alumni.

Yet for the University of New Haven, the news was overwhelmingly positive. We raised over $7.7 million in new gifts, grants and pledges—more than 10 percent above our goal for fiscal year 2010. Within that total, the amount in cash we received from private sources—individuals, foundations and corporations— grew by almost 43 percent over the previous year’s figure. And while alumni giving percentages dropped dramatically across higher education, ours rose by 8.6 percent.

John Gehring,’52 A.S., is quick to acknowledge the impact his UNH education had on his career. Like many professionals, he attended evening classes after working all day. By the time he graduated he felt confident to go into business for himself. Ten years ago he and his wife, Leona, retired from their office equipment and piano and organ businesses and moved to Marco Island, Florida. They maintain strong ties to Connecticut, where they still own real estate, and where they have been impressed with the positive evolution of John’s alma mater.
What Matters: Giving back has always been important to the Gehrings. While they were successful in business, they also made time to help nonprofit organizations and customers in need. When they retired, rather than sell their businesses, they simply closed the stores and gave away the inventory. The Gehrings support the University because they want to help young people receive the kind of education that can help them with their careers.
Why They Help: “The University gave me a path to follow,” says John. “My business was made more successful because of what I learned there.” “The University has come along very quickly and we’re excited about its future,” adds Leona. “We want to be part of that.”

Hope for the future: “After graduation, I hope to work in an analytical chemistry lab, with further study in forensic toxicology.” Why he is grateful: “When I was told my proposal had been accepted by the SURF committee, I was very excited. I was given an opportunity not many college students have — a chance to do one-on-one research with my advisor on a very worthwhile project. My project wouldn’t have been able to move forward without the generosity of SURF donors. The project went in many directions. Our biggest concern was that the machine we used for analysis needed a costly part replaced. Thanks to the money we received from SURF, we were able to purchase one. I am thankful there are people who are so generous, giving UNH students the opportunity to participate in the SURF program.” University of New Haven

What Motivates: I attended college part time and paid my own way. Actually, I received my first “scholarship” from my mother — a loan that I repaid as I earned money. She instilled in me a strong work ethic and an appreciation for helping others.
What Matters: My church choir, family, education.
Why He Helps: My estate gift will add to my existing scholarship fund. It’s my way of helping future generations of students attend college, achieve their own dreams and give back to their communities.

She is active on campus and nationally with the Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA), the student branch of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA), an organization dedicated to preparing students for careers in the music and entertainment industries. After completing an internship as an executive assistant at Trod Nossel Studios in Wallingford, Conn., Jaqulyn was hired as a studio manager.
Hope for the future: “Currently I am toying with a few different possibilities. I do want to get my master's degree, but I plan to take a year or two off from school to get more experience in the music industry. Ideally, I would like to be a freelance recording engineer working either in New York or California, and applying what I learned at UNH to the various arenas involved in the music industry.”
Why she is grateful: “The scholarship I have received for the past three years has helped me in more ways than you can imagine. It allowed me to save up money from my summer job so I could use it throughout the school year (during the months when I was unemployed) instead of worrying about paying a portion of my tuition. It also was rewarding for me to see that all of my hard work throughout my collegiate career was being noticed by someone, and I felt so grateful when I heard that my hard work helped me be awarded such an amazing scholarship. Being the recipient of a scholarship sparked an interest to hopefully be able to return the favor to a future college student. I want to help someone attend the school of their dreams and get the same opportunities I had. This scholarship allowed me to attend UNH, which was my dream school, and receive an education in a field that has always interested me. It helped open the door to so many opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Without a scholarship, I never would have been able to take advantage of these amazing opportunities.”

Hope for the future: “I have always been good with numbers and always found finance interesting, which is why I became a finance major. Overall, though, I enjoy working with people. I have loved working at Waddell & Reed and would enjoy getting a job with them or another financial planner upon graduation. I have also mulled over the possibilities of coming back to UNH for my MBA and playing my final year of eligibility with the volleyball team.”

Why he is grateful: “Being the recipient of scholarships at UNH has been a great experience. In high school, I did not do a very good job applying myself, and I always caught flack for not living up to my full potential. In college, I have done a much better job applying myself—much to the pleasure of my family and high school teachers. What pleases me the most is how proud my parents are. Both of my parents went to college, so they know how hard it can be sometimes to maintain a high GPA.

Although I have downplayed the financial aspect, I cannot deny how much it helps to receive aid that I don’t have to pay back at some point. I do not have a scholarship to play volleyball, so it is great to receive financial support to help cover my college education. Because of volleyball and interning, it is hard to make any money during the semester.”

As a UNH student in the '80s, David Peterson played defensive end for the Chargers football team. It was an experience that, in many ways, defined his undergraduate years at UNH. Football taught him lessons about life–discipline, teamwork, respect, the ability to juggle challenges and adapt to ever-changing environments. It also taught him how to create a game plan for winning, which helped set the stage for his successful business career. Dave has owned several successful ventures, including sports entertainment restaurants, printing businesses and credit card platforms. Today, the Coral Gables, Florida, resident is president and CEO of 4 Media Online, a credit card technology and consulting business with locations in the United States and abroad.
What Motivates: “I’ve had ups and downs in my career,” he says, “but I’ve been fortunate to survive. I have two daughters and I want to teach them to be responsible citizens, as well.” Dave is actively involved with Soldiers’ Angels, an organization that provides aid and comfort to military men and women and their families. He also supports Indian Princess Seminole Nation, an organization dedicated to providing services that enrich the father and daughter bond, and Soles4Souls, which distributes shoes to people in need.
Why He Helps: Dave’s love of football never diminished, and he was excited to see Charger football return two years ago. Now a member of UNH’s Board of Governors, he organizes the University’s annual alumni football trip to Miami, and his gifts have supported the renovation of Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. “My UNH coaches and professors were positive role models who were fundamental in shaping who I am today,” he says. “The UNH experience provided me with the tools that helped me achieve my goal of running a successful business worldwide.”

Angela Zappia grew up in a blue collar household in New Jersey, the second child born to Italian immigrants. Her parents always stressed the importance of going to college. She earned her B.A. degree and soon found herself drawn to Wall Street and information technology. Over the past 25 years, she has held a number of increasingly important jobs for companies including Manufacturers Hanover Trust, Chase Manhattan Bank, JPMorganChase and UBS. In 2004, she received her E.M.B.A. degree from UNH. She is currently a technology chief operation officer at Barclay’s Capital. Her husband, Philip Batchelor, retired from Prudential Securities as a senior vice president in technology. He began his career with Merrill Lynch and in 1967 joined Bache & Company, which became Prudential Securities, and remained there for most of the next 37 years. He earned his E.M.B.A. from UNH in 2004 as well as his M.S. in taxation in 2007, and is a former member of the University’s Board of Governors.
What Motivates: Angela has never forgotten her parents’ emphasis on the importance of education. It’s a perspective she shares with her husband. Both regard education not as simply a means to achievement, but as a valuable way to understand the world. “We went back to school at UNH many years after being out of college,” says Angela. “We were so pleased and impressed with what we got out of our education that we made a commitment to help the University.”
Why They Help: Angela and Phil have endowed a scholarship in the College of Business to support a deserving business student. “We’ve had good careers,” says Phil. “We’ve been successful and satisfied. We feel there’s a responsibility to help prepare future generations.” “A lot of things can be done better in the world,” says Angela. “The only way to make significant improvement is through education.”

Major: English-Writing Involvement: A triplet – both of Ashley’s brothers attend UNH. Bruce is an interior design (pre-architecture) major, while Carl is pursuing a sports management degree. In addition to her duties as a staff writer for the Charger Bulletin, Ashley serves as a Sunday school teacher and is very involved with her church community. Her broad range of interests includes politics, business and law.
Hope for the future: “After graduation, I hope to pursue my master’s degree in journalism, English or political science. My dream is to become a journalist and a best-selling author. I am also interested in working in the areas of politics, journalism and education.” Why she is grateful: “Being the recipient of a scholarship means a great deal to me. My parents have always taught me to strive for the best and to never settle for less. Receiving a scholarship is one of the many accomplishments I am very proud of. It means someone saw my willingness to want to become a successful person. It also means someone saw the hard work I put in every day to achieve greatness. Scholarships are blessings for me and my family. There are families today who cannot even imagine sending one child to a private college, let alone three. My favorite quote is from Mother Teresa: ‘I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.’ I give all the credit to God for allowing me to receive scholarships, go to a great school and to be successful. Words are so powerful, and that is the reason why I want to become a writer—I want to touch the world through words. A LASTING LEGACY
Giving Back Sets the Stage for a Show Producer’s Legacy “I absorbed the University and the University absorbed me.” Robert J. Cole, ’60 B.S. President, Advertising and Sales America’s Best Shows, Inc.
He has been a Boy Scout executive, broadcaster, ad man, travel agent and motivational speaker, as well as a consummate trade and consumer show producer. Yet whatever Bob Cole, ’60 B.S., has accomplished, he has always remembered where he got his start. Cole says his UNH experience changed his life. That is why when he and his wife, Eileen, established a family trust in his will, they named UNH a beneficiary. “Remembering the University gives me the opportunity in some small way to pass on what they gave to me.” Cole has “followed the opportunity trail,” producing everything from Bob Hope specials and concerts to sports and boat shows. He attributes his drive to the strong work ethic that was instilled in him at a young age by the University, and remains eager to help others succeed. “We’re only leasing land for a lifetime,” Cole says, “and then we pass it to the next person.”
