Spring 2015

Reva and her adopted pal Fiona

Dear Friends,

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally found a new home. UPAWS recently purchased twenty acres of land from the Marquette County Fair Board as the future home of a new shelter. Over the past several years the UPAWS Board has looked at numerous properties, but this location was the only one that would allow us to fulfill the needs of our animals now and into the foreseeable future. In looking at properties, we had to consider several criteria: zoning for large animals, the ability to bring in natural gas, enough acreage to accommodate not only a shelter, but also provide for safe walking trails for our resident dogs, and space for a community dog park. The property also had to be affordable and within a reasonable distance of the major population areas, on a major road. It had not been an easy search, but when the Fair Board approached us offering to sell road frontage right on M-553 that met all of our needs, we were ecstatic.

New Shelter Building UPAWS Board President Reva Laituri signs a purchase agreement for 20 acres of land for UPAWS. Joan Mulder, seated, UPAWS Treasurer; James Goriesky, Marquette County Fair Board President, and Andi Goriesky, of Select Realty

When you finally find the right place, you just know it. The site of the future shelter is located about a mile and a half south of the M-553/CR 480 crossroads with frontage on M-553. Drive time from Marquette City is ten minutes, Teal Lake in Negaunee, 16 minutes, Gwinn, 13 minutes, and US41/M28 in Harvey, 8 minutes. The property will accommodate not only the shelter proper, but will also allow for outdoor exercise and safe, off-road, walking trails for the resident dogs, a year-round, fenced-in community dog park, and adequate parking for volunteers, staff, and visitors. Preliminary plans also include a simple pole barn which will allow UPAWS to help with situations involving horses and other large domestic animals. While a date for when the new shelter will be built is yet to be determined, the Board and a number of volunteers are putting the final numbers to the cost of creating and operating the shelter our animals need. There is no question the current shelter is too small, too old, and too tired to provide our animals with the safe and healthy environment they deserve. Renovation of the current facility, or rebuilding on the current site, would at best be a temporary fix and still would not address most of the problems.

We greatly appreciate the support of the Fair Board and the wonderful people at Select Realty in making this purchase happen. The Fair Board sold us the property at a very fair price and Select Realty not only waived commission fees in facilitating the sale, but is now also working on a major fundraiser in May to help recoup the purchase price.

When the current shelter was built, nearly 40 years ago, it was a great leap forward for the animals at that time, but it no longer meets the needs of our animals, our mission, or our community. As our knowledge and understanding of animals has moved forward, as advances in design and construction have moved forward, as people’s attitudes and values regarding companion animals has moved forward, so must the housing, programs, and services of UPAWS move forward. The new shelter design is no frills; health and safety of the animals, practicality, and efficiency are the focus in this new shelter, and every design element will tie into one or more of those priorities.

~Reva Laituri ~ UPAWS Board President

We are very grateful to all who, over the last 40 years, have brought us this far and are confident our animal-friendly community will ensure the animals of tomorrow will have a safe and secure place to stay while they await a new home. They deserve no less.

Celebrate Adoption! Our community responded with one word to the question: Why do you love your adopted pet?

BUCK

GIZMO

We have had Buck a few months short of two years ago... He has transitioned into a great pup. He loves long walks in the woods anytime of year. He has a basket of toys he loves to play with and even enjoys the company of our cat, Dora now. Thanks UPAWS for all you do for these animals! ~ Joy Bender Hadley

My family and I were the lucky ones who got to adopt Gizmo. We had been eyeing him since you posted him on Facebook. He has adjusted well to our house and his new animal friends. He may always look unenthused, but his big purr and super cuddly cuddles prove otherwise. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which is a lot like Fibromyalgia. With this comes increased depression and anxiety, amongst many other unpleasant things. Gizmo has helped me with all of this. He knows when I’m having a bad day and will give me extra cuddles. He follows me around the house, so apparently he loves me as much as I love him! You have no idea how much this guy has helped me recently. He has become a kind of therapy cat for me; just without the prescription. Thank you UPAWS for giving me my new best friend. -Megan and the Hillier family

Why Do You Like Volunteering?

Pet Tips Sponsored by local business members  Don’t allow pets to eat chewing gum! Xylitol is a

Lisa Oratevz with little Junior, a kitty who soon found his new family

Volunteering was always encouraged at home when I was growing up. My parents were regularly active with my school, church, and community, and when I got a little older I started doing the same. It was always fun and exciting, it kept me busy, and it made me feel good. As I became more involved with various groups and organizations over the years, I saw how much work went in to planning events and running the organizations themselves. I saw how much time and dedication was needed and I always wanted to be a part of that. I moved to Marquette in 2013 not knowing anyone or anything about the area. After a few months, I decided to become involved with a local organization and my immediate thought was the animal shelter. I found UPAWS and started volunteering on the weekends. I like volunteering at UPAWS because I have a deep love for animals. The animals that come to the shelter need our help, whether it be medical attention or love and compassion. I love spending time there because I get to know the animals and I feel that on some level, however small, I am making a difference in their lives. ~ Lisa Oratevz From UPAWS: UPAWS is blessed to have an abundance of volunteers and supporters. Lisa is a wonderful asset to our volunteer team. She helps clean on Sunday mornings, volunteers at our Petsmart cat adoption center and is active on our fundraising committee. Just ask any of the staff about Lisa and you’ll hear, “We love Lisa!” Thanks Lisa for all you do for UPAWS and for caring for the pets while they wait for their new homes!

UPAWS was thrilled to be the recipient of a $10,000 donation because of a special Subaru ‘Share the Love’ event. For each new Subaru purchased or leased (from Nov. 20-Jan. 2), the customer could choose a charity to receive a $250 donation. In previous years, Subaru chose national charities to benefit from this promotion and this year Fox Marquette learned that a local charity could also be included, so they nominated UPAWS! The Fox sales team knew that their customers would want to support a local charity, so they went to work personally calling and asking if they would choose our shelter. The new Subaru owners were happy to help UPAWS! We’d like to thank Fox for choosing us, the hard work of their staff, the new Subaru owners who selected UPAWS as the recipient and of course Subaru for this wonderful promotion.
