Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis, Fifteenth Edition; Horngren, Datar & Foster; ISBN (E-book and MyAccountingLab)

Course Overview: If you are taking this course, then that means you have already completed Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting. You may remember that Financial Accounting focused on reporting results to a company's external constituents and Managerial Accounting focused on using the data accumulated in the accounting system to make better informed decisions about the company. Cost Accounting will continue with the concepts that were learned in Managerial Accounting, i.e. developing and enhancing your skills to make decisions for the day to day management of your company. As such, we will be focusing on job cost and unit cost accounting; job order and standard costing systems; cost/volume/profit analysis; direct and indirect costs and budgeting. Course Objectives: After completing the course, students should be able to: 1. Describe the role of cost accounting in supporting management decisions. 2. Demonstrate the different type of cost behaviors and how changes in these costs may affect decisions. 3. Apply Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) analyses to assist in choosing alternatives. 4. Apply job costing concepts to manufacturing and service organizations. 5. Calculate the cost of products using Activity-Based Costing. 6. Develop an operating budget, including projections of cash flow. 7. Differentiate between variable costing and absorption costing. 8. Demonstrate the use of various methods of cost estimation. Course Schedule: The following table summarizes the schedule for the course. For purposes of this course, each week runs from Monday through Sunday. All assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. on the date listed. 1

The final exam is due the Tuesday after Week 7 by 11:59 p.m. 2

Participant Responsibilities: 1. Attendance, presence, and full participation are required for this class. You cannot successfully complete this course without completing the weekly readings and assignments. 2. Participants are expected to adhere to all due dates for assignments and discussion board postings. No late items will be accepted unless negotiated in advance of the due date. Instructor Responsibilities: 1. I will sign on to Moodle at least once each day to address any issues that may come up. Specifically, I will be on-line on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 pm. – 8:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. If at any point during the quad, I am unable to meet those specific timeslots, I will send an announcement. 2. I will respond to emails and phone calls within 48 hours of receipt. I always commit to posting grades and providing feedback within one week of any assignment's due date. For this class, since our week ends on Sunday night, I will have grades for all assignments from each week posted and feedback provided no later than Wednesday of the following week at 11:59 p.m. I will post a summation of each week’s activities no later than Monday at 11:59 p.m. 3. Assignments and discussion boards for the week will be available starting at 12:01 a.m. each Monday morning. Technical Skills: Students should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Additionally, the homework and quizzes will be completed on-line at a dedicated web page I have set up for the course (see section entitled “MyAccountingLab Resources” below for further information). A basic understanding of the internet and web browsing should be sufficient for students to easily navigate through the course-related web sites. MyAccountingLab Resources: We will be using the software platform, MyAccountingLab. This is a platform that has been developed by the publisher of our textbook and integrates the e-book with the homework assignments, the quizzes and multiple learning resources. In addition to preparing the homework assignments and the quizzes in this platform, I encourage you to explore the learning resources that are available there. Each chapter has powerpoints and some videos that may help to reinforce your readings. Additionally, there are “Dynamic Study Modules” that can be very useful in gauging your understanding of the concepts. These consist of a series of questions that will help you reinforce and retain what you learn. If you have any questions regarding the use of any of these resources, please let me know. 3

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING RUBRICS Homework (70 maximum points) The weekly homework assignments are administered through MyAccounting Lab and will incorporate problems from the text covering applicable learning objectives from the chapter readings. As these questions are objective in nature, you will be awarded points based upon your correct answering of the questions. You have an UNLIMITED number of GRADED attempts during the assigned week to finish the homework and achieve full credit. The purpose of the homework is to reinforce the learning objectives. The weekly homework assignments are due by midnight each Saturday during the course. Each homework assignment is worth 10 points. Quizzes (70 maximum points) The weekly quizzes are administered through MyAccounting Lab and will incorporate various question types including:  

True/false Multiple choice

As these questions are objective in nature, you will be awarded points based upon your correct answering of the questions. The weekly quizzes are available each Sunday in MyAccounting Lab from 6:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.Central Standard Time; the quizzes must be submitted by 11:59p.m. for grading. This should give you ample time to access the quizzes around your schedule. Additionally, once you begin a quiz you will have 120 minutes to finish. Please make sure you are aware of these requirements. Each quiz is worth 10 points. Excel Problem Set (120 maximum points) During Weeks, Two, Four and Six (the even weeks), a set of homework problems from the text will be assigned. The purpose of this assignment is to practice applying the concepts you are learning in an Excel environment, thereby reinforcing both the accounting concepts and your Excel skills. The problem set should be submitted into Moodle by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. The grading rubric for the Excel Problem Set can be found on Moodle. Each problem set is worth 40 points.

4

Discussion Forum (105 maximum points) Each week you will be expected to participate in a discussion forum through Moodle. During Weeks One, Three, Five and Seven the forum will consist of a discussion posted on Moodle. Each participant is expected to post a thoughtful response to the question by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday and then post 2 responses no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. During Weeks Two, Four and Six the forum will consist of an opportunity to collaborate on the Excel Problem Set that is due every other week. Each participant is expected to post a question, insight, concern regarding the problems on the forum and respond in a helpful manner to the posts that are made by their classmates. In this way, each participant should gain a better understanding of the problems that are assigned. All postings are due no later than 11:59 p.m. on Saturday. Please note the difference in due date for these forums. It is so that students will receive any needed feedback prior to the due date for the submission of the Excel Problem Set. The grading rubric for the Discussion Forum can be found on Moodle. Each Discussion Forum is worth 15 points. Final Test (100 maximum points) The final test is comprised of exercises and problems similar in nature to the weekly homework assignments. You will be awarded points based upon your correct answering of the questions. The final test is worth 100 points.
