PUMP GUIDE

Sykes Group

Our History Sykes was established in Australia in 1967 by UK pump group Henry Sykes Plc. The company traded as Henry Sykes Pumps Pty Ltd importing pumps and equipment from the UK until 1974 when local manufacture commenced in Gateshead, Newcastle NSW. Sykes Pumps manufactured pumps to suit the specific requirements of the demanding Australian mining and construction industries. In 1977 Sykes became part of another UK group Hanson Plc. The company traded as Hanson Sykes Pumps Pty Ltd in Australia. In 1987 Jon Collins joined the board in Australia after more than 18 years with Hanson Plc in the UK.  In 1988 Jon Collins was appointed managing director of Hanson Sykes Pumps Pty Ltd and the head office was moved from Chatswood in Sydney to the manufacturing plant in Gateshead, Newcastle. Jon Collins acquired the organisation in 1992, thus ending its association with all other UK companies. In 1992 the ownership of the business changed when Jon Collins was part of an MBO thus ending the association with all UK companies, allowing the company to focus on its Australian operations. Shortly after, the company changed its name to Sykes Pumps Australia Pty Ltd when manufacturing operations moved to Cardiff, Newcastle,

Sykes Group was acquired by National Hire Group Ltd in 2010; parent company of Allight and 46.1% shareholder of Coates Hire. Following the acquisition, the combined group has a greater capacity to meet customer demand for sales and support of pumps, lighting towers and other equipment solutions. Andrew Aitken, Managing Director of National Hire said: “This is a company transforming acquisition for National Hire’s equipment sales and support business. Sykes Group provides scale, volume and distribution opportunities for National Hire that will help underpin future growth.” Sykes Chairman Jon Collins added; “Combining Sykes with National Hire is very exciting because the businesses operate in common markets and have similar core values. Like Sykes, the Allight brand is very well respected, and being in the same family as Westrac and Coates Hire will enable Sykes to raise its profile and access resources to create even more growth opportunities for all stakeholders.” Find out more at www.allightsykes.com

In early 1997 Sykes sold its hire division to Coates Hire Ltd and focused on manufacturing and selling pumps worldwide. In 1998 Jon Collins became the sole owner of Sykes Pumps Australia Pty Ltd. In 2003 the company changed its name to Sykes Group Pty Ltd, the purpose of this change was to reflect the company’s global market focus as well as to show that ‘The Group’ were more than just a pump company.

Introducing Henry the elephant “The Original Pump” In addition to the traditional ‘triangle’ logo Sykes Group have a ‘living’ logo which is used to further strengthen the company’s identity and to provide subliminal character to our products. Sykes ‘living’ logo more clearly profiles Sykes while reinforcing the values in the brand. The elephant symbolises reliability, robustness, strength, sturdiness, dependability, trustworthiness and consistency.

Priming Systems

The Sykes Compressor Prime self-priming system utilises a jet of compressed air passed through a venturi-type nozzle to evacuate the pump casing and suction line for fast, positive and continuous priming, even under snore conditions. The priming system has no moving parts, greatly reducing maintenance requirements. Impeller

Discharge

Stainless steel 316 for best corrosion resistance. Two per cent chromium and CD4MCu available as options. Impellers are open for best solids handling, and have back vanes and holes for pressure balancing.

Flapper style check valve for deck discharge, or ball type for top discharge available.

Venturi prime Simple design, easy to clean. Modular for easy parts replacement. The venturi system requires very little maintenance, and is easily serviced in the field.

Volute Made from spheroidal graphite cast iron. Spheroidal graphite iron provides superior strength compared to ductile and grey iron. Spheroidal graphite molecules prevent cracking in the metal thereby adding to the overall strength of the metal.

Wear plates Replacement front and rear wear plates made from 316 stainless steel. Chromium steel abrasive resistant and CD4MCU corrosive and abrasive resistant steel are available options. Replaceable wear plates lower operation and substitution costs by allowing adjustment of the wear plates to maintain efficiencies.

Compressor Water cooled compressors are used for lower running costs. This means a longer life and less maintenance on the compressor and venturi priming system.

Seal Oil bath mechanical seals allow dry running for extended periods. The oil bath dissipates the heat and lubricates the seal. Materials of construction include silicone carbide and tungsten carbide for the most effective head and friction coefficient. New seals allow for higher pressures, this means improved performance in flooded suction and series pumping. Seal elastomers include Buna N and Viton.

Shaft Made from 431 stainless steel means no rust or pitting on the shaft for easier seal changes.

A proven alternative to the compressor prime system is the Sykes Vacuum Prime self-priming system. Vacuum priming chamber

Wear plates

Greatly reduces carry-over due to the stainless steel baffle deflector plates and pancake float. Ideal for wellpoint dewatering and long suction conditions.

Replacement front and rear wear plates made from 316 stainless steel. Chromium steel abrasive resistant and CD4MCU corrosive and abrasive resistant steel are available options. Replaceable wear plates lower operation and substitution costs by allowing adjustment of the wear plates to maintain efficiencies.

60cfm vacuum prime Ensures quick priming even in long suction conditions.

Float type head gear Made from anti-corrosive materials.

Over centre positive latches For easy access during servicing and maintenance.

Volute Made from spheroidal graphite cast iron. Spheroidal graphite iron provides superior strength compared to ductile and grey iron.

Impeller Stainless steel 316 for best corrosion resistance, CD4MCu, and cast iron available as options. Impellers are open for best solids handling, and have back vanes and holes for pressure balancing.

Discharge Flapper style check valve for deck discharge, or ball type for top discharge, available.

Oil reservoir and oil/air separator Are fitted integral to the vacumax chamber. The two stage oil separator reduces misting from the vacuum pump exhaust.

Seal Oil bath mechanical seals allow dry running for extended periods. The oil bath dissipates the heat and lubricates the seat.

Shaft Made from 431 stainless steel means no rust or pitting on the shaft for easier seal changes.

Additional priming systems are available. Product descriptions and specifications are approximations only and are subject to change without notice. No reliance can be made on these approximations.

Contractors Range

Sykes Contractors pump range has been designed to provide greater cost efficient fluid handling solutions for all users. The range offers efficiency levels of 83% which translate into

Sykes Contractors pumps are a fully automatic priming pump and can run dry for extended periods due to the oil bath mechanical seal assembly which allows priming with long suction hoses and suction lifts of up to 9 metres (28 feet). As fluid levels fluctuate, the pump will “snore” until the time liquid is available for the pump to fully reprime itself automatically.

Easy maintenance

Two systems are available utilising the same QS, canopy design:

Routine maintenance can be performed through the large access doors (lockable). External drain plugs are fitted for fuel, oil and water. The skid base fuel tank can be easily drained and flushed out if required. The complete canopy can be easily removed for major maintenance.

CP – compressor Prime

VMX – ‘VACUMAX’ vacuum prime

Both systems are fully automatic and interchangeable. Sykes will advise on application suitably.

Options QS is available in the genuine Sykes vacumax or compressor prime configuration, with a variety of diesel engines. Available in Primax or Himax range.

Extremely quiet operation Sykes QS Pumpsets have been designed to operate within all current noise requirements on both worksites and in urban areas.

Skid The QS pump and engine are set on a common skid base which incorporates a 24 hour (minimum) fuel tank and bunded area.

Hearing degradation is of great concern to all and Sykes have recognised the need to design a range of sound proofed (QS) and super-sound proof (SQS) pumpsets to minimise workers compensation claims and create a pleasant working environment.

Portable The QS trailer mounted pumps are designed to be bolted onto a twin axle galvanised trailer. These may also be fitted with hose racks to store 10 lengths of suction hose, and 100 metres of layflat discharge hose along with the advantage of a pump designed to run at a noise level of 62 dBA at 7 metres.

The QS series pumpsets are extremely quiet (62 dBA at 7 metres) when operating at full load. All QS models are compact in design and robust in construction.

Dragflow Pumps Moving dense slurries by pump is nothing new. Neither is using a pump to pick up sediments. What’s new is using a pump to pick up solids from rest, mixing them into a high density slurry and pumping them all in one operation. The Dragflow agitator slurry pumps are specifically designed for this task. The agitator is the key for picking up material from rest. The agitator is designed to handle fast settling, high specific gravity solids and viscous thixotropic mud. The agitator is used to physically and hydraulically force material away from the pump’s suction. Doing this creates a “down pressure” stirring up material below the pump’s suction. The created pressure differential (suction of pump versus down pressure of agitator) will mix and homogenize the stirred up material. The mixed and homogenized slurry is then drawn back into the suction as a highly concentrated, uniform slurry. Material too large to enter the pump’s suction (screen) is repelled and does not plug the suction screen. With installations all over the world from sumps, mine tailings reclamation, dredging applications to mill scale pits, Dragflow Pumps offer a highly efficient way of moving solids the world over. Sykes Group is the Australian distributor for Dragflow Pumps.
