A1 - Implement A Sustainable Management Plan: Our strategy for environmental sustainability is based on PDCA cycle. This was made popular by Dr. W. Edwards Deming, who is considered by many to be the father of modern quality control. The concept of PDCA is based on a scientific method developed from the work of Francis Bacon. The scientific method can be written as “hypothesis”–”experiment”–”evaluation” or plan, do and check. PDCA is a successive cycle which starts off small to test potential effects on processes, but then gradually leads to larger and more targeted changes. Plan, Do, Check and Act are the four components of the work bench in any hospitality industry.

P - PLAN Establish the objectives and processes necessary to deliver results in accordance with the expected output, by making the expected output the focus. It differs from other techniques in the completeness and accuracy of the specification, which is also part of the improvement. D - DO Implement the new processes. Often on a small scale if possible, to test possible effects. C - CHECK Measure the new processes and compare the outcomes against the expected results to ascertain any differences. A - ACT Analyze the differences to determine their cause. Each will be part of either one or more of the P-D-C-A steps. Determine where to apply changes that will include improvement. When a pass through these four steps does not result in the need to improve, refine the scope to which PDCA is applied until there is a plan that involves improvement. Our hotel’s strategy for environment sustainability is to reduce the environmental impact associated with the operation of our hotel. We strive to develop technical, operational and organisational innovations to help reduce material and energy inputs. Use of environmentally friendly resources, optimisation of operating equipment, reduced waste inputs, lower rejection rates / also guest or associate related complaints and waste recycling, together with the principles of efficiency, sufficiency and consistency will drive our efforts towards environmental sustainability.

Fair trade products: Our properties use products like fair trade coffee, which means among other things, that fair prices were paid to primary producers or farmers, especially in developing countries.

B2 – Local Employment: Emiratisation has been part of the company strategy since 2003, during which time a separate brand was created to assist the company vision of sustainable long-term Emiratisation throughout all its operations. ‘Al Bawaba’ - translates as the ‘Gateway’ - was chosen to convey that JA Resorts & Hotels not only offers UAE Nationals employment, but also a career gateway into the hospitality industry. The use of the brand ‘Al Bawaba’ graphically represents the way the company sees its Emiratisation initiatives fan out on a sustainable and systematic basis. This process is implemented through targeted entry level positions for UAE Nationals into each of its various properties, gradually culminating in the aim to place UAE Nationals strategically, within the hotel’s and back house departments. The final objective of this initiative is to have UAE Nationals represented across all position grades within the properties over a long-term. At present, the company employs over 30 UAE Nationals.

B4 – Support Local Entrepreneurs: JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort supports local entrepreneurs by renting shops to local owners, so as to sell UAE hand-made crafts and products to help the local economy. Our aim is to spark the entrepreneurial spirit in the hotel by training local students to shape their ideas. B10 – Local Livelihoods: JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort is located in Jebel Ali Dubai. Jebel Ali (Arabic: ‫( ) جــبــل عــلــي‬also sometimes written as “Mina Jabal Ali”) is a deep port located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Jebel Ali is the world’s biggest and largest man-made harbour, and is by far the busiest port in the Middle East. Port Jebel Ali was constructed in the late 1970s to supplement the facilities at Port Rashid. Jebel Ali Port, credited to the efforts of Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, opened in 1979. The village of Jebel Ali was constructed for port workers, and it had a population of 300 people. Covering over 134.68 square kilometres, it is home to over five thousand companies from 120 countries of the world, and has 67 berths. The port of Jebel Ali has become the port most frequently visited by ships of the United States Navy outside of the United States. Due to the depth of the harbour and size of the port facilities, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and several ships of the accompanying battle group can be accommodated pier side. Due to the frequency of these port visits, semi-permanent liberty facilities have been erected adjacent to the carrier berth.

B11 – Bribery And Corruption: We follow three guiding principles of the Code of Ethics, which are - Equality and Fair Treatment, Respect, Personal and Professional Accountability. The hotel prohibits its employees from soliciting, arranging or accepting bribes intended for the employee’s benefit or that of the employee’s family, friends, associates or acquaintances at all times. The hotel complies with local laws of no selling, trading or displaying of archaeological pieces / objects allowed. This also reflects in our agreements with the shop owners. Guests are informed of illegal products and souvenirs in the UAE; the list of such illegal products and souvenirs is available with our Concierge team. Guests are provided with information on the preservation and access to the local site’s history, culture and natural environment, through welcome letters and in-room collaterals. A dedicated Guests’ Experience team is fully trained to promote tours to local heritage sites and a complimentary shuttle service is available for our guests to Dubai Heritage Village and other historical sites such as Old Dubai / Souk on a daily basis. Also, a list of historical and cultural sites is available with our Concierge team. The hotel uses visual elements of local architecture and mashrabiya around the hotel. Local dates and Arabic coffee is served to the guests upon arrival, and our Arabic themed restaurant Ibn Majed within the hotel, serves Arabian cuisines on a rotation basis and UAE signature dishes are available on the menu.

D: ENVIRONMENT: A. Energy Conservation: 1. Use of LED Lights: The resort has spent nearly AED 500,000 to change all the lights to LED. This includes the front and backhouse areas. The front areas was completed by 2014 and now the back-house is undergoing the process in a gradual manner.

5. Use of R 134-A (CH2FCF3) 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane CAS number 811-97-2: Also known as norflurane (INN), this is a haloalkane refrigerant with thermodynamic properties similar to R-12 (dichlorodifluoromethane), but with insignificant ozone depletion potential. It is an environmentally friendly refrigerant with leak detection system, which is used in all chillers / A/C plants. This increases efficiency and lowers energy consumption, and causes less harm to the atmosphere and the ozone layer. 6. Installation of New A/C Chiller Plant 360 TR: An old reciprocating chiller has been replaced with a screw type chiller, which is 20% more efficient than the older one. Two of them has been replaced in JA Jebel Ali Beach Hotel, where as four have been replaced in Palm Tree Court. All these uses the R134a environment friendly refrigerant. 7. Separate Metering for Electricity Measurement: Electricity metres have been installed for the Stables and the Employee’s Accommodation to get to know its actual consumption. Separate sub metres have been planned at various other places to know which area is consuming more electricity so that the focus can be diverted towards it. Old metres are calibrated by an external company to get accurate data. 8. Solar Panels in the BioGarden: Photovoltaic (PV) is the name of a method of converting solar energy into direct current electricity using semiconducting materials that exhibit the photovoltaic effect. A photovoltaic system employs solar panels composed of a number of solar cells to supply usable solar power. The first step involves the photoelectric effect, from which a second electrochemical process takes place involving crystallized atoms being ionized in a series, generating an electric current.

2. Use of Fresh Air in Lieu of Chillers: A 100% fresh air is used for cooling to reduce the chillers’ load during winter months. Kitchen hoods are provided with untreated air to reduce conditioned air from being extracted. 3. Use of Photo Cell In Car Parking and in the Garden Area: A solid-state device that converts light into electrical energy by producing a voltage, as in a photovoltaic cell. Or it uses light to regulate the flow of current, as in a photoconductive cell. It is used in automatic control systems for outdoor lighting. Unlike timers, this system detects sunlight and switches on the light when it is actually needed. 4. Old Electrical Panel Replaced with New Energy Efficient Panel: It’s benefits are in terms of reduced repair and maintenance costs, continuous uninterrupted power and no inconvenience to the guests. Without the new panel, the Power Factor of a building can be anywhere from .70 to .95. In other words, the building is using only 70% to 95% of the electricity that is coming through the electric metre, and which shows up on the electric bill. This panel improves the Power Factor and energy efficiency of the building, thus reducing the amount of electricity that the hotel uses. So when we are using the refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, washer, spa, pool, dryer, air conditioner or heating system, the building will require less electricity. This reduces electric bills by 20%. It also reduces 3 tonnes of carbon from your building’s carbon footprint.

9. Energy Audits: An energy audit, which is an inspection, survey and analysis of energy flows for energy conservation in a building, process or system to reduce the amount of energy input into the system without negatively affecting the outputs at our property. The energy audits are carried out by Farnek. A list of recommendation was also submitted on which resort it has worked on and showing improvements in various areas in terms of reducing energy and water. 10. Heat Exchanger (Anchor Bar and Pool): In the swimming pool heat exchangers are used to transfer the heat / cool generated by the boiler / chillers or any other heating / cooling method to the water. Heat exchanger keeps both sides of the system apart and thus any chemicals on the pool side which could be corrosive to the heating / cooling system are kept away.

Benefits: • More efficient – Incorporates more heat transfer tubes, the pool heats more quickly • Easy to maintain – Special features enables the end covers and tube stack to be removed for cleaning purposes • Corrosion resistant material – Units are made up of titanium, cupro-nickel and stainless steel, making them suitable for the pool 11. Hotel Optimiser: Hotel optimiser is a program that has been created by the region’s hoteliers. It is effectively managed and reduced both, the cost and consumption of energy, water, waste disposable and carbon footprints via easy to use web based benchmarking software that potentially boosts bottom line performance. JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort is using this software since 2012 and now plans to extend this function for its associate’s accommodation area through “Residence Optimiser”. 12. All toilet lights are controlled through motion sensors for energy saving purposes.

B. Water Conservation:

C. Garbage Disposal Management:

1. Water Desalination: Desalination is the process that removes minerals from saline water. In other words the salt water is desalinated to produce fresh water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort takes sea water as the raw ingredient to prepare potable water, which fulfils the requirement of daily needs. It costs almost half the price of municipal water.

We have categorized our garbage in seven different categories. Disposable garbage is given to a vendor who recycles paper, plastic and aluminium. Waste oil is given to a company who recycles it to make soap and bio-diesel. Glass is given to another vendor who remanufactures broken glass.

2. Sewerage Treatment Plant: The hotel’s landscape and gardens including the entire golf course are irrigated with recycled water through by our onsite treatment plant since 1981 and it has been using its own desalination plant to desalinise all water used throughout the Resort since 2001. Conserving water is aided by the Sewage Treatment Plant providing recycled water for our 128 acres of gardens and 9-hole golf course since 1981 and the Storage capacity and was increased in 1998 with the extension of JA PTC. 3. Urinal Sensors: These save water to a great extent. Auto shutdown happens after 60 seconds, where water consumption is about 1.2L to 1.9L (Flush Volume), compared to 5L of water during normal flushing. The use of auto flush urinals makes it easier to maintain the sanitation of the toilets. Instead of looking at it as a liability, it is considered as the end benefit of modern toilet flushing systems based on their maintenance and utility bills. There are many benefits of installing auto flush urinals that have been considered. 4. Sensor Taps and Aerators: This is the use of water saving taps equipped with sensors in all the area restrooms and staff locker rooms. Aerators are installed in all faucets to reduce the flow of water without affecting the pressure. 40 to 50% reduction has been made through Aerators. 5. Recovery of Swimming Pool Backwash: It is used for nonpotable purposes. For example, it goes back to the sewage treatment plant and is further used for irrigation. It saves approximately 600 gallons of water recovered per day.

A contract is in place with a hazardous waste company who does safe disposal of hazardous materials. Common waste is collected at various locations in blue coloured bins and blue coloured liners under the name “Wet Garbage”. All kinds of food waste and items which cannot be recycled goes into this bin. This garbage is collected by the Stewarding Department and the Housekeeping Department from the front and back-house respectively. It is then dumped into a 1.1 CBM skips placed in garbage room. A contract has been made with a company who brings a compactor at our site twice a day to compress and collects it. At the end of the month this company provides us with a summary of the collection. Our aim is to segregate garbage at its source. To also involve guests in our sustainable journey a beautiful two compartment garbage bin is provided in each room. One compartment is for recyclable waste and the other one is for common waste.

Our Garbage Categories: • Dry garbage (Paper, plastic and aluminium) • Wet garbage (Food waste and any other waste which cannot be recycled) • Glass garbage (Broken and whole glass, any colour) • Used waste oil (Kitchen and engineering) • Metal garbage • Wood garbage • Hazardous waste • Electrical and Electronic Equipment Waste (EEEW) • IT scrap • Tube-lights and bulbs • Expired chemicals • Empty containers • Cleaning waste (Oil sludge) • Clinical waste

D. Use Of Eco-friendly Products And Initiatives: 1. Use of Eco-wood: We use eco-wood flooring in our outdoor restaurant and bar along with the sun and pool deck for sustainable flooring, which reduces demands on the ecosystem during its life cycle. All the walkway bridges around the JA Palm Tree Court accommodation and the golf course signage’s are made from eco-wood. 6. Aquaponics: Aquaponics is a revolutionary system for growing plants by fertilizing them with the waste water from fish in a sustainable closed system. Aquaponic gardening is an amazingly productive way to grow organic vegetables, greens, herbs, and fruits, while providing the added benefits of fresh fish as a safe, healthy source of protein. On a larger scale, it is a key solution to mitigating food insecurity, climate change, groundwater pollution, and the impacts of overfishing of our oceans. Aquaponics systems are completely organic. They are four to six times more productive and use ninety percent less water than conventional gardens. Other advantages include no weeds, fewer pests, and no watering & fertilizing needed.

2. Use of FSC Certified Papers for Collateral: ‘FSC’ stands for Forest Stewardship Council - an organization that works to promote the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. The FSC sets standards for forest products, independently certifies that these standards have been met and bestows labels upon the products that qualify. Forest Stewardship Council certification gives customers the option to choose forest products like paper and wood that have been sourced in an environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner. FSC was founded in 1993 in response to concerns about deforestation. 3. Use of Fair Trade Coffee: JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort uses “Piacetto” coffee, which comes under fair trade and rainforest certification. Fair trade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between producers and consumers.

When farmers can sell on fair trade terms, it provides them with a better deal and improved terms of trade. This allows them the opportunity to improve their lives and plans for their future. 4. Use of ENERGY STAR Rated Products: A new home that has earned the ENERGY STAR label, has undergone a process of inspections, testing, and verification to meet strict requirements set by the US EPA is JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort. ENERGY STAR certified properties use 15-30% less energy than typical new properties, while delivering better comfort, quality and durability.

F. Socio-cultural Initiatives: 1. Adoption of Ali and association with “All As One”: A non-profit organisation close to the JA Resorts & Hotels family, that takes care of underprivileged children in the war torn country of Sierra Leone. They sponsor each child’s education, welfare and basic necessities on behalf of all its own properties and the company’s key clients. Over the past two major activities in May 2014 and March 2015, a total of US$ 75,000 was donated to the cause.

5. Use of VOC Free Eco-health Paints: Paints and finishes release low level toxic emissions into the air for years after application. The source of these toxins is a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which, until recently, were essential to the performance of the paint. JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort prefers to use paints which have low VOC level. 6. Printer Cartridge Recycling: Used cartridges are given to a company who pay is back. Collected cartridges are recycled by refilling to be used by interested parties at a lower cost. 7. Use of Corrugated Bins in Place of Plastic Bins: To minimise the use of plastic, all the offices use corrugated bins for collection of recyclable office waste. These bins are provided by a company called UPM who has been contracted with us to collect recyclable waste. Torn and spoiled bins are collected by UPM and put it into a recycling process to produce a new bin without harming the environment.

E. Pollution Control: The hotel ensures that their departments analyze their activity and related levels of pollution comes out together with the expected outcome. All pollution is measured and rated with the existing and proposed plan of action for the future. Government technical guidelines and local order number 61 are used as a base to decide the threshold limit of various kinds of pollution. Our initiatives that are used to keep the pollution within the limit are as follows: 1. Use of drain degreaser in kitchen operations 2. Weekly cleaning of sump pits 3. Use of secondary containers for storing chemicals 4. Testing of drain water to evaluate the levels of pollution 5. Noise level evaluations 6. Garbage minimisation programmes 7. Use of eco-friendly chemicals in Housekeeping and Laundry 8. Safe disposal of hazardous waste 9. Stake emission tests are proposed for the year 2016

2. Clean Up the World Campaign: It is a global campaign that inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment. Held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, it mobilises an estimated 35 million people across 130 countries each year. JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort chooses a neighbouring site and encourages associates to take part in its cleaning on a quarterly basis. 3. Earth Hour: Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, and is organised by WWF. Engaging a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues, Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort participates in the Earth Hour every year where all essential lights of the property is closed for an hour. Next day our Engineering Department presents a summary as to how much energy was saved just by switching off lights for an hour. All the guests are issued a letter in advance urging them to participate in this noble event.

4. Blood Donation: Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person — the gift of life. A decision to donate blood can save a life, or even several if the blood is separated into its components — red cells, platelets and plasma — which can be used individually for patients with specific conditions. It is also needed for regular transfusions for people with conditions such as thalassaemia and sickle cell disease. A blood donation campaign is organised by JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort on a yearly basis in association with GMC Clinic.

7. BioGarden: As a part of its ongoing effort to contribute towards the environment, the JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort developed an onsite BioGarden to produce a range of fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables for use within several dining outlets. Initiated in 2007, the garden was first planted with a selection of aromatic herbs over a small area of only 120 square metres. Presently, the garden comprises an area of over 1,000 square metres and the resort is proud to be self-sufficient for many of its herb and many vegetable requirements.

5. Donation: JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort always strives to come forward and help the community in case of any disaster or even generally.

Situated on an elevated area between the horse riding stables and Palm Tree Court, the BioGarden presently generates 100% organic produce and everything used in the garden is recycled in one form or another. Although these are small steps, the BioGarden philosophy is to make realistic changes to help the environment and encourage everyone to participate to make an overall impact.

• The resort had organised an event on 11th June ‘15 to raise funds to support our colleagues from Nepal • Unused amenities are donated to local charities or shelters • Retired towels, linens and other soft goods are donated to local charities or shelters

Guests can take an educational stroll around the garden and whilst enjoying the aroma of the fresh herbs and vegetables, learn about their natural health and beauty benefits from the plant descriptions. There is a secluded seating area with a watering pond in the middle of the garden to sit, relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. During the summer months the BioGarden is invigorated with new soil and nutrients, after which new saplings are planted. At the outset, children have been involved as much as possible. When the BioGarden was opened on Good Friday in 2007, all the children at the resort were invited to help plant the first plots. When the garden was extended to include fruit trees, the children from the resort had helped. Each child who participated in planting his/her own tree, has their name mentioned on a special plaque within the grounds of the BioGarden. During the winter months, a weekly garden session takes place as part of the activities arranged by the resort’s Cool Zone Kids’ Club, to expose them to gardening and let them get their hands dirty.

6. Showcasing Environmental Movies to Increase Awareness: When you leave the movie theatre, you always know that you have just watched a great movie because it has made you feel great joy or sadness, excitement, fear or suspense. There’s another kind of emotion that movies can serve to awaken in you – a feeling that leaves us questioning how we can do more for our environment. Environmental movies offer entertainment coupled with a powerful message that must be shared. Environmental movies are focused on telling a tale that most movies seldom touch upon. JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort showcases such movies time to time in Employee accommodation where the message is conveyed to most of the JA associates in a fun-filled atmosphere.

It is a matter of delight that we have developed the concept of a BioGarden at JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort, not only as an environmental initiative, but also to allow guests to experience the taste of truly local, 100% organic herbs and vegetables. We are keen to further improve this facility as part of our ongoing green initiatives. How the JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort BioGarden is making a difference: • Reduce: The gardening team (with help from our wonderful staff volunteers) make their own organic compost using trimmings from the resort’s several kitchens. This means creation of solid waste is reduced while producing a great amount of organic fertilizer for the garden. • Reuse: The resort has developed a water recycling system called “Aquaponics” that reuses water from the resort for irrigation in the garden. Even the irrigation system itself uses the recycled water from the sewage treatment plant for the resort’s golf course. Using an irrigation system rather than watering by hand also saves water. • Recycle: To fund the garden, the dirty oil from the resort’s kitchens is converted into diesel by an external company. The money generated is then used to buy tools, seeds and for the payment of wages to the gardener.

8. Artificial Reef to Attract Marine Life: Twelve pupils from the International School of Arts and Sciences (ISAS) took to the cold waters off the shores of Jebel Ali to witness the construction of the artificial reef they have sponsored. The pupils ranging from 13 to 17 years of age collected AED 6,000 to help drop 20 concrete reef balls 100 metres off the JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort beach, making it the first step in the building of an artificial reef at the resort. The aim of this project is to create a diving spot close to the resort and at the same time be able to give back to the community and the environment. Recently divers and fishermen have been seeing that the marine life is returning to the area, including fish such as Hammour and eels. These reef balls will simulate underwater rock formations that will attract fish.”

10. Fish Release: JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort, in collaboration with the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) – Trakhees organised a fish releasing activity at the hotel’s protected swim area. This comes as a response to an authorities call in the Emirate for a more sustainable utilisation of the fisheries. This event was supported by the Marine Resources Research Center of the Ministry of Environment and Water (MEOW). The activity released fish into the waters of the Arabian Gulf, from the resort’s beach, which were cultured and transported all the way from Umm Al Quwain. 11. Our Guest Initiative: Two Red-Eared Turtles had been rescued by one of our environmentally cautious guest at Dragon Mart and were released at the JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa, Palm Tree Court area, where we have approximately 30 other turtles of the same species. 12. Communication Channel: An eco-corner is made, where all green initiatives are posted for our employees to be updated on. Showcasing Green initiatives are also part of our town hall meeting, which takes place regularly. JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort shares his initiatives, efforts, environmental goals and achievements through this Eco-corner with our associates. “We were looking for a way to communicate the initiatives that this Resort is committed to do for a more sustainable environment, the Eco-corner appeared to be a wonderful communication tool.” 13. Annual Activity Calendar: JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort has prepared an annual Eco-CSR Calendar where each month is dedicated to focus on one major environmental concern. This serves the purpose of being a ready reminder for associates to plan their environmental duties in advance. Top management ensures that planned activities are carried out effectively.

9. Supporting IUCN Red list: With an intention to support endangered species we support IUCN RED LIST by not serving Bluefin Tuna and the Hammour fish, which are completely taken out from our menus. Only sustainable options are taken into consideration while preparing the menu.

In delivering this commitment, it is the responsibility of each and every associate to contribute to and promote the practices in place, follow the focus of the month, work carefully to minimise excess waste, buy and use sustainable products, conserve natural resources and lead by example.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, founded in 1964, is the world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of biological species. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world’s main authority on the conservation status of species. A series of Regional Red Lists are produced by countries or organisations, which assess the risk of extinction to species within a political management unit.
