This year we are working with the Unmasking Brain Injury project to showcase masks made by survivors. The goal of the Survivor Art Show is 

To PROMOTE awareness of the prevalence of brain injury • To GIVE survivors a voice and the means to educate others of what it’s like to live with a brain injury  To SHOW others that persons living with a disability due to their brain injury are like anyone else, deserving of dignity, respect, compassion and the opportunity to prove their value as citizens in their respective communities . If you would like to make a mask which will be displayed in public spaces around the state., please contact the BIAVT office or email [email protected] We have the blank masks and the instructions for you to contribute to the travelling exhibit.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves of Brain Injury. A uniquely educational and entertaining view of what it feels like on the inside of a Traumatic Brain Injury. Hannah Deene Wood

Surviving and Thriving!

Brain injuries can leave you with issues that can’t be seen and society doesn’t always understand. An “invisible brain injury” doesn’t need to be “hidden”. Hannah will share the story of her brain injury, her understanding of how it is part of her identity and how that helps her to “shine brighter” “Identifying your strengths, what makes you move, and how to fill yourself up with goodness is how we not only survive but thrive on our new path!” Hannah is an entrepreneur, a mother and wife, a Zumba instructor and so much more. She encourages all “to keep on our healing path with confidence: loving and supporting ourselves and each other as we persevere.”

A Getting Where You Need to Go At Go! Vermont Ross McDonald and Deb Sachs Go! Learn how our ride-matching software, guaranteed ride home and access to all modes is one click away for people challenged by brain injuries--we are here to help you get to where you need to go. B Identity loss and accepting the ’new normal’ Laura Basili, PhD Middlebury College For individuals living with TBI and their care providers, grieving the losses associated with the injury is a crucial aspect of surviving and coping. This session will examine how the grief process over the loss of your identity is essential to making a new, realistic outlook for the life long journey of living with TBI. C Emotional Regulation: Strategies Maria Kajankova, PhD Dr. Kajankova will review treatment interventions and strategies that address emotional dysregulation postTBI. The session will also include an introduction to an evidence-based emotional regulation intervention developed at Mount Sinai to address emotional dysregulation post-TBI. D Art Therapy - Carolyn Crotty Art means many different things to people. Sometimes it is a process that produces something to hang on your wall but it also can be just exploring and having fun with the process. In this session, art materials will be used to explore the theme of transformation, growth and resilience as it relates to overcoming challenges. This session's goal is to help participants explore their creative side to express their inner strength. No experience necessary. E Parents Perspective on Helping A Young Adult Kate Ross, Sasha and Larry Becker Brain injury changes our lives drastically. Young adults experiencing brain injury want to leave childhood and parents behind to seek independence, yet find themselves thrown back to dependence on the parents they were so ready to leave. Working through all the systems to restore and/or maintain their own physical and mental health, is a huge struggle, especially when comprehension and attention may be severely compromised. Being set free from the confines of a hospital, back to home or a rehabilitation facility, can be isolating and frightening at a point in life when you should be set free to build your independence. How do families cope with these sudden changes in a youth who was so ready to be ‘set free’? Session 3 - 2:30—4:00 A Brain Injury and the Opioid Addiction Epidemic Chris Carter, Psy.D, Spaulding Rehab Opiate abuse, addiction and overdose have been rising across the country as have the number of brain injuries resulting from chronic opiate use, overdose and accidents while driving under the influence, etc. Dr. Carter will provide background on the opiate crisis, its impact on brain injury and the challenges involved in providing effective treatment for both opiate addiction and brain injury. B It's my Brain Injury: How to assist your care team in providing you quality care. Ashley Couture, SLP and Cheryl VanEpps, Survivor Ashley will present on thinking and communication changes following brain injury (BI). with a focus on strategies to improve one’s ability to understand, respond and recall that can impact one’s quality of health care interactions. Cheryl will present lessons learned from her struggles as an outpatient with a complex head injury (with moderate TBI) and through her work as a volunteer Patient Advisor at UVM Medical Center. They hope to: pass on crucial insider knowledge of your care process, increase awareness of com municative issues patients with BI face, recommend use of BI-informed accommodations during care, and provide a self-help patient tool. C Neuropsych Evaluations : Who, How & What Jonathan Lichtenstein, MBA, Psy.D, DHMC Who does neuropsych evals? How does it work? What can they tell us? Dr. Lichtenstein will discuss the role of the neuropsychologist, the key components of an assessment and the neuropsychological challenges typically seen in brain injury. D Fueling your Brain for Health and longevity-A Holistic Approach Marie Frohlich, Certified Health Coach This fun and interactive session will include a demo and offer information on food and herbs that help fuel the brain . You will leave the session with an idea of how you will incorporate these foods and herbs into your life. E Therapeutic Drumming .– Steve Ferrais, UVM Music Faculty and Root Drumming Systems Drum therapy is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression. From the shamans of Mongolia to the Minianka healers of West Africa, therapeutic rhythm techniques have been used for thousands of years to create and maintain physical, mental, and spiritual health.
