THE BCA CAMPAIGN

AND THE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION IN ACTION ®

Evelyn H. Lauder courageously and boldly launched The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign in 1992 with the creation of the Pink Ribbon, the universal symbol for breast health. Devoted to the mission to defeat breast cancer through education and medical research and currently active in more than 70 countries, The BCA Campaign has raised more than $58 million to support global research, education and medical services, with close to $46 million funding 185 Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF) medical research grants worldwide over the past 21 years. Until her passing in 2011, Evelyn H. Lauder was also Chairman of BCRF, the independent not-for-profit grantmaking organization, which she founded in 1993. For more than two decades, BCRF has been passionately committed to fulfilling its mission: to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by funding the most innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health. Currently, BCRF spends 91 cents of every dollar toward research and awareness programs and to date, has raised more than $560 million to fuel discoveries in tumor biology, genetics, prevention, treatment, survivorship and metastasis. While The BCA Campaign and BCRF have distinct missions, they join together in action to achieve a shared goal: a world without breast cancer. The BCA Campaign supports BCRF by raising awareness and funding for its research grantmaking program, which advances the most promising, innovative breast cancer research worldwide. Funds are raised through The Estée Lauder Companies’ employee activities, Pink Ribbon Product sales, contributions from many of The Estée Lauder Companies’ iconic brands and donations made on BCAcampaign.com.

LIFESAVING ACTIONS OF BCRF RESEARCHERS The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign is proud to support the following 2014-2015 Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF) Investigators in their efforts to prevent and cure breast cancer.

The discovery that each breast cancer has a unique pattern of genomic alterations has led to the development of new “targeted” treatments. Some breast cancers, however, are resistant to these treatments. The goal of BCRF grantee FABRICE ANDRÉ, MD, PhD (Professor of Medical Oncology, Institut Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France), whose research is supported by The Estée Lauder Companies in memory of Evelyn H. Lauder, is to counteract drug resistance with more personalized therapies by identifying genes involved in the development of breast cancer and potential new drug combinations.

JILL BARGONETTI, PhD chairs the Molecular, Cellular and Development PhD Subprogram in Biology at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Her team focuses on two of the most critical drivers of breast cancer, MDM2 and p53. Dr. Bargonetti and her colleagues are working to identify ways to target these critical proteins and stop cancer cells from replicating and spreading. In loving memory of BCRF Founder Evelyn H. Lauder, The Estée Lauder Companies’ New York-area employees undertook several creative fundraising activities to establish this grant at Mrs. Lauder’s alma mater.

In a unique collaboration at UCLA, made possible by support from Clinique, Associate Professors JULIENNE E. BOWER, PhD and STEVEN W. COLE, PhD, are studying the role that stress and the immune system play in cancer. They are currently looking at whether reducing stress with a mindfulness-based intervention will reduce inflammation in breast cancer survivors. Results from this trial will lay the groundwork for the development of interventions to reduce stress and stress-related inflammation.

The research by LEWIS C. CANTLEY, PhD (Director, Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY) focuses on understanding normal cell growth and the defects in these processes that lead to cancer. Work by his laboratory led to the discovery of a growth signaling molecule called phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), now known to be a major player in tumor growth. Dr. Cantley was honored at the 2015 annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research for his groundbreaking work in this field. “It is very exciting how much progress has been made in breast cancer over the last 15 years. The progress is coming from novel targeted therapies and figuring out how to use them at the right stage.”

There is an urgent need to develop targeted therapeutic approaches for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), the most aggressive form of the disease. Through the support of the Estée Lauder brand, JENNY C. CHANG, MD, Professor of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College and Director of the Cancer Center at The Methodist Hospital, Houston Methodist Research Institute (Houston,TX) is working to better understand why these cancers are often resistant to treatments and how to prevent them from spreading. Her team uncovered a group of genes that may help researchers identify new drug targets and improve outcomes of patients with triple-negative breast cancer.

12

Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer makes up more than two-thirds of all breast cancer cases. While several anti-estrogen drugs are available to treat postmenopausal breast cancer, there are fewer treatment options for younger women with ER+ breast cancer. This is the focus of research by MITCH DOWSETT, PhD, BSC, and IAN E. SMITH, MD, FRCP, FRCPE, Professors at The Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research in London. With support from The Estée Lauder Companies honoring Elizabeth Hurley, Drs. Dowsett and Smith have identified changes in specific genes that occur at different times during the menstrual cycle of breast cancer patients. They believe that this information can be used to predict how patients will respond to endocrine therapy. Dr. Dowsett was honored with the Brinker Award for Clinical Research at the 2014 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. “I believe breast cancer will become a disease that is much less feared than it has been as we move through the next two decades.”

H. SHELTON EARP, MD, Director of Cancer Care at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, is studying genes that regulate tumor growth. With generous support from the Estée Lauder brand, Dr. Earp’s team identified a gene called MerTK that makes tumor cells resistant to chemotherapy by inhibiting the body’s immune response. His group is currently testing a drug in the laboratory that blocks MerTK to see if it can improve breast cancer therapy.

MONICA FORNIER, MD, is a medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. Her research is focused on small molecules known as metabolites, which can be detected in the blood. With generous support from The Estée Lauder Companies’ North America Supply Chain & Operating Facilities, Dr. Fornier is comparing the metabolites in women with early breast cancer to those with advanced breast cancer to determine whether this method can detect a second cancer before it develops.

Women with inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 have much higher risks of breast and ovarian cancers than others. JUDY E. GARBER, MD, MPH, Director of the Center for Cancer Genetics and Prevention at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA) identified a new function of BRCA1 and BRCA2 that may explain how mutations in these genes can cause normal cells to become cancer cells. These studies will provide new insights into the early processes in the development of breast and possibly ovarian cancer in BRCA mutation carriers. “My mother had breast cancer when I was in the fifth grade. She survived for 40 years despite having had positive nodes, so we can't complain about her radical mastectomy and lymphedema, but I became interested in cancer from that experience.”

Many breast cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy and hormonal therapy experience some loss of brain function, a condition sometimes called “chemobrain.” With generous support from the Estée Lauder brand, PATRICIA A. GANZ, MD, a BCRF Scientific Advisor and the Director of Cancer Prevention & Control Research at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, is conducting research to improve memory and concentration in breast cancer survivors. Her studies will provide greater understanding of why some women have persistent difficulties with thinking and memory and identify ways to help women improve these functions after breast cancer treatments.

Cancer stem cells are required for tumors to grow and spread. Tumors with a lot of cancer stem cells are more aggressive and more likely to spread to distant tissues than other tumors. ARNOLD J. LEVINE, PhD, Professor at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, has shown that breast cancer stem cells are more prevalent in tumors that lack a tumor suppressor protein called p53, suggesting that p53 may be important in preventing the development of stem cells in breast tumors. It was Dr. Levine’s laboratory that first discovered p53. His team is working on ways to prevent the stem cell production and tumor progression that will lead to potential therapeutic agents for aggressive breast cancers.

13

ZHE-BIN LIU, MD, PhD is a Resident in the Department of Breast Surgery at the Breast Cancer Institute at the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (Shanghai, China). Through the generous support of the Estée Lauder brand, in the past year she collaborated with BCRF-supported researcher Jenny Chang, MD, Director at the Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston, Texas, to find targets for new therapies for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) by comparing changes in genes in breast cancers that progress during treatment to those that improve with treatment. After her year of work with Dr. Chang, Dr. Liu returned to China to continue her research and clinical work.

Like all tissues, tumors require a blood supply to grow. Unlike normal tissue, tumors can create new blood vessels as they grow. One way to block tumor growth is by preventing new blood vessel growth around the tumor. MARSHA A. MOSES, PhD, Julia Dyckman Andrus Professor at Harvard Medical School, is the head of the Vascular Biology Program at Children’s Hospital. Her BCRF research, supported by Clinique, focuses on genes and proteins in the tumor that regulate blood vessel development and promote tumor growth. Her goal is to be able to treat early lesions before they become harmful, using drugs that will prevent them from getting the blood they need to survive.

FUNMI I. OLOPADE, MB, BS, FACP heads a multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory research program in hereditary cancer at the University of Chicago. Thanks to generous support from The Estée Lauder Companies, Dr. Olopade is identifying genetic markers that can be used to predict response to breast cancer therapy in specific populations. In the last year, Dr. Olopade has reported important findings that may lead to better screening and prevention of inherited breast cancers. This study is particularly timely in light of Dr. Olopade’s ongoing work in improving access to breast cancer care in underserved communities in the US and Africa.

Many women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS, a non-invasive precursor of breast cancer) are overtreated, highlighting the need to identify those who are most likely to progress to invasive cancer. THOMAS A. ROHAN, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY, has compiled nearly 7,000 biopsies from women with DCIS that will be used to identify possible markers to predict which DCIS cases are most likely to become invasive breast cancers. The results from this pilot study will lay the groundwork for a large-scale study, with the goal of improving our ability to predict breast cancer risk.

Understanding the impact of environmental exposures on cancer risk is an arduous task. Because multiple exposures occur over a lifetime, it is very difficult to link a specific chemical exposure to cancer. With generous support from Aveda, REGINA M. SANTELLA, PhD and MARY BETH TERRY, PhD, both Professors at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health (New York, NY), have initiated a clinical study that will evaluate environmental exposure to a class of chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) on breast cancer risk in young girls. PAHs are one of the most common environmental pollutants and are known to cause cancer by damaging DNA. They hope to identify blood-based biomarkers that can be used for early detection and prevention of breast cancer in high-risk women.

It is well known that lifestyle, particularly factors that lead to obesity, can influence breast cancer risk. With generous support from the Estée Lauder brand, VERED STEARNS, MD, co-director of the Breast Cancer Program at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University, has started a clinical trial to study the effects of weight loss on the risk of recurrence. Her research team hopes to identify markers in the blood and tissue that can predict which women would most likely benefit from the weight-loss program. The study will lay the groundwork for more personalized approaches for breast cancer prevention.

MY ACTION IS…

Leading The Estée Lauder Companies’ global fight against breast cancer, while honoring my mother’s legacy.

WILLIAM P. LAUDER Executive Chairman, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.

This year, The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign focuses on action, which leads to impact, a belief that was so important to my late mother, Evelyn H. Lauder. When my mother first began bravely speaking out about breast cancer more than two decades ago, few people were talking about it openly or publicly. Dedicated to the belief that knowledge is power, she worked hard toward her vision for a world without breast cancer and in the process she became a voice for women, men and families everywhere who had been touched by the disease. I have the unique privilege of being able to witness the diverse efforts of our colleagues and partners around the globe and championing their visions for The BCA Campaign. Over the last 23 years, the collective actions of our Company have helped us raise more than $58 million to fund 185 BCRF research grants and other breast cancer organizations and programs around the world. This action is having a significant impact in bringing scientists closer to solutions that can lead to a world without the disease. As we launch The 2015 BCA Campaign, I find myself reflecting on how my mother’s personal actions – traveling the globe to deliver critical breast health messages, co-creating the Pink Ribbon, or offering her support to countless individuals who had been diagnosed – have shaped, and continue to shape, the breast cancer awareness movement. I see her vision brought to life each time an educational brochure and Pink Ribbon pin are offered at our counters worldwide, a global landmark is illuminated in pink as a powerful message of hope, or a critical research project is funded through the support of The BCA Campaign. When I see the impact of these actions, I can’t help but think about how proud my mother would be to know that her effort continues to gain momentum and continues to have an important impact on people’s lives each and every day. Together, all of us at The Estée Lauder Companies grow stronger each year. Every action taken in this fight brings us closer to our goal of ending breast cancer.

16

MY ACTION IS…

Getting a mammogram each year on my birthday and encouraging women around the world to do the same.

ELIZABETH HURLEY Global Ambassador for The BCA Campaign

Elizabeth Hurley is an actor, model, swimwear designer, farmer and mom. Since signing as a spokesmodel with Estée Lauder in 1995, the timeless beauty has embraced the late Evelyn H. Lauder’s passion for speaking openly about the importance of breast health and raising funds globally for research to find a cure.

18

What inspired you to get involved with The BCA Campaign?

What actions do you take as Global Ambassador for The BCA Campaign?

I was incredibly close with my late grandmother – she was a wonderful woman who was fun-loving and full of energy. When she discovered a lump in her breast, she was too afraid to talk about it; in fact, she waited two years before even telling anyone she had breast cancer. Her experience really left a lasting impression on me, and when Evelyn Lauder asked me to help her with The BCA Campaign just after I started as an Estée Lauder model, I felt an immediate connection to the cause. My grandmother had recently passed away from the disease, and I wanted to do my part to honor her, help spread the message about breast health and save lives.

Each year, I have the pleasure of traveling the world to spread The BCA Campaign’s message about breast health, education and the importance of medical research to find a cure. I meet countless people who have been touched by breast cancer and speak with researchers who are making such strides in the fight to eradicate this disease from our lives. I’m so inspired by these individuals and all the ways they’re supporting the cause and encouraging those around them to do the same; that’s what being Stronger Together is all about. When we join together and take action together for a common goal, we really can accomplish anything, and I know Evelyn would feel the same way. This year, I will be encouraging women and men around the world to show how our each of our actions can have an impact in the fight against the disease. We persevere today with the same dedication and commitment that Evelyn had.

You became good friends with the late Evelyn H. Lauder over the years. What’s your favorite memory of you and Evelyn taking action together in the fight against breast cancer? Evelyn Lauder was a vibrant and passionate leader in the global breast cancer awareness movement. She was a wonderful mentor to me, and I have such fond memories from our many travels around the world together. I remember feeling particularly moved when we set a first-time Guinness World Record in 2010 for illuminating the most landmarks for a cause within 24 hours. Together, Evelyn and I lit up the last landmark – the Empire State Building – in glowing pink lights. It was a meaningful moment for us both and I’ll never forget how emotional we felt, knowing that this global effort was focusing attention on the importance of breast health and inspiring people around the world. Each time I continue the tradition of taking action and illuminating an iconic world landmark, I can’t help but think of Evelyn.

What do you hope people around the world learn from this year’s BCA Campaign? Breast cancer knows no boundaries and does not discriminate, touching everyone in every country around the world. We have accomplished so much, but there’s still a lot of work ahead of us to make breast cancer a thing of the past. I hope people everywhere learn just how impactful each and every action can truly be in bringing us closer to a world without breast cancer. Simple gestures, from reminding your friends to schedule their annual health appointments to making a donation in a loved one’s honor to support lifesaving research through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF), can go a long way. Collectively, our actions can achieve significantly greater impact.

You’ve been working with The BCA Campaign for 20 years. What makes this year so special? This year’s BCA Campaign is an opportunity to unite millions of women, men and families worldwide in the simple, but powerful idea of taking action, and showing the larger impact that all of our individual actions can have. When I first began working with The BCA Campaign, I remember Evelyn telling me, “Women all over the world are dying and nobody’s talking about it.” The fear that once surrounded breast cancer is being replaced by hope and inspiration, as we all continue to join together and take action in the fight against the disease.

Q&A CORNER with Elizabeth Hurley This is a cause that is very near and dear to your heart. How do you encourage those around you to take action with you? I’m lucky that I have very supportive friends and loved ones who join with me each year. Some wear the pink ribbon year-round, most update me when they schedule their health appointments and I always remind people how important it is to monitor their health.

What is a simple action in the fight against breast cancer that you wish more people around the world would take? I wish more people would talk to their doctor regularly and truly be proactive when they think something may not feel right in their bodies.

Who is your biggest inspiration? My son, Damian, is my biggest inspiration. As a mom, I want the best life for him and that means growing up in a world where he doesn’t have to worry about the people in his life being affected by this horrible disease.

What do you do to de-stress after a long day? Oh, I love long hot baths every night before bed, and spending time walking on our farm with my son.

You live such a healthy lifestyle, what’s one big thing we can learn from you? Research shows that a healthy lifestyle plays an important role in breast cancer prevention. I like food in its simple state. I have my own organic farm and only eat meat that we’ve raised there. I grow most of my own vegetables and buy the rest from our local farmers’ market.

You travel all over the world, what’s your secret for always looking your best while on the go? Staying hydrated is so important, whether on the road or in the air. I always try to start the day by drinking a large glass of water before I do anything else. When I’m on the go, I’m never without a bottle of water and I’ll keep one in my bag or in the car. That and I’ve been using Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair twice a day for 20 years – I can’t live without it!
