2007 Season Preview Only nine starters return from last year’s 9-2 squad, but six of those have earned All-NJAC honors at least once. Still, 11th-year head coach Dan MacNeill will be looking for contributions from a number of new faces as the season begins. Leading the offense will be senior quarterback Alex Smith. A starter since his freshman season, Smith completed 80-of-126 passes for 1,089 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 136 yards and three scores last fall before suffering a season-ending injury in the sixth game of the season. Smith is currently ranked third at Cortland with 34 career touchdown passes, fourth with 353 completions and fifth with 4,408 yards, and has a reasonable chance to become the school leader in each category before season’s end. Junior Ray Miles performed admirably in Smith’s absence, connecting on 47-of-88 passes Senior running back Dustin Bowser. for 563 yards and six touchdowns before also suffering an injury that kept him out of the final two games. Sophomore Sean Pratt came off the bench and helped Cortland defeat Ithaca in the annual Cortaca Jug game. Senior tailback Dustin Bowser was the team’s second-leading rusher last year with 361 yards and two touchdowns on 83 carries. In his lone start, he rushed for 98 yards on 21 carries versus Rensselaer. Junior Andrew Giuliano will also compete for playing time at tailback. He scored two touchdowns among his 35 carries in seven games last year and averaged more than four yards per carry as a freshman.

Senior tight end Paul Caughell.

Senior fullback Mike Sveda provided mainly blocking support to the running game, but was a threat as a receiver with 14 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown. He earned second team All-NJAC honors for the second consecutive season. Senior tight end Paul Caughell was also an All-NJAC selection for the second straight year last fall. He caught seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in addition to his contributions as a blocker. Senior Dave Fregelette also returns at tight end. His four receptions last season included two touchdown grabs.

A number of receivers will look to earn starting roles after the graduation of the team’s top two passcatchers from last fall. Junior Mike Lane is the top returning receiver with 17 catches for 169 yards in 11 games. Senior Keith Greene made eight catches for 123 yards and one touchdown, while senior Shane Arce and junior Jeffrey Lang each caught two passes. Lang also handled Cortland’s kickoff duties last season. Junior guard James Mignone is Cortland’s lone returning starter on the offensive line. He started all 11 games last season on a line that allowed only 16 sacks all season. Four returning letterwinners, all juniors, saw action in at least two varsity games last year – guards Joe Weinstein and Justin Kindt, tackle Sean James and center John Schillinger.

Defensively, Cortland was the top Division III team nationally in 2006 with 50 sacks, but only 13.5 were by returning players. Senior defensive end Brad Robison, an honorable mention All-NJAC selection last year, recorded 32 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, along with three pass breakups. Junior end Ben Nagle and junior tackle Richard Rolo are back after serving in backup roles last year. Nagle had 4.5 sacks among his 16 tackles as well as three pass breakups in 11 games. Rolo made eight tackles in seven contests. Four returning players are among the group battling for all three vacant starting linebacker positions. Senior Kyle Pierce made 24 tackles last year in 11 games. He registered two sacks and three pass breakups. Senior Chris Gagstetter also played in all 11 games last year. He totaled 20 tackles, with 1.5 sacks, and two pass breakups. Junior Adam McPartland played in five games (five tackles) and junior Jim Smith saw action in the final three games (one tackle) last year as both missed time due to injuries. The wealth of Cortland’s returning defensive experience is in the secondary. Senior cornerbacks Jeff Beck and Greg Steward have both started for a majority Senior linebacker Kyle Pierce. of their careers. Beck made 28 tackles and picked off a team-high four passes last season. His 12 career interceptions are tied for second best in school history. Beck earned second team All-NJAC honors last year and was an honorable mention All-American as a kick returner after averaging 34.8 yards per kickoff return, with one touchdown, on 11 attempts. Steward registered 14 tackles and one interception in 11 games last year and has five career interceptions. Senior Ronny Rodriguez is also in the cornerback mix after recording 26 tackles and one interception Senior defensive back Greg Steward. in 11 games last season. Rodriguez joins Beck as a kickoff return threat as well as he averaged nearly 20 yards per return a year ago. Junior safety Matt Berman started the final eight of his 11 games last season and is the team’s leading returner with 67 tackles. He also finished the season with three forced fumbles, an interception and 5.5 tackles for lost yardage. Senior Vinny Aiello is among the candidates for a starting safety role after serving as a backup last year. He made 14 tackles and forced a fumble in 11 games. Senior kicker Matthew Mintz led Cortland in scoring last season with 71 points. He tied a school single-season record with 12 field goals, including a game-winning 40-yarder in overtime versus Ithaca, and was perfect on 35 point-after kicks. An honorable mention All-American and an All-NJAC selection, Mintz enters the season having connected on 44 consecutive PAT attempts. Sophomore transfer Kyle Peterson averaged 35.0 yards per punt on 54 attempts last fall at Delaware Valley College in Pennsylvania.

the best defensive teams in the Yankee Conference. His 1991 squad finished the year first nationally in scoring defense, second in total defense and fifth in rushing defense while leading the Yankee Conference in every defensive category. The Wildcats placed first nationally in rushing defense in 1992. In 1996, Villanova finished 8-4 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

Dan MacNeill enters his 11th season as SUNY Cortland’s head football coach in 2007. His teams are a combined 61-41 and have made five postseason appearances, including two NCAA tournament showings.

While at Villanova, MacNeill coached three AFCA/ Kodak First Team All-Americans, one Associated Press All-American, six first team All-Yankee Conference performers, six first team All-ECAC selections and one player who went on to the NFL. He received a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Villanova in 1994.

Last season, MacNeill guided the Red Dragons to a 9-2 record and an ECAC Division III Northeast Bowl bid. Cortland tied for first in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 6-1 record. In 2005, MacNeill led the Red Dragons to a 7-2 regular-season record, including an NJAC co-title with a 5-1 record. Cortland earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs and finished the season 7-3. Cortland’s other NCAA appearance under MacNeill came during an 8-3 campaign in his first season in 1997.

A 1979 Cortland graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, MacNeill was a four-year Red Dragon letterwinner and three-year starter at linebacker and defensive tackle. He served as a team tri-captain during his senior campaign in 1978. In his last varsity game against Southern Connecticut State, he was credited with 11 unassisted tackles and three quarterback sacks.

In 2002, MacNeill led Cortland to a 9-2 mark -- the most wins at the school since 1990 -- and the ECAC Division III Northwest title. The team also placed second in the NJAC with a 4-2 record. In 2003, Cortland finished the regular season with a 5-4 mark before losing in the ECAC Northwest championship game. Among MacNeill’s other highlights at Cortland are a 32-31 win over nationally second-ranked and eventual national semifinalist Rowan University in the 2001 season and six victories against rival Ithaca College in the annual “Cortaca Jug” game. MacNeill has coached 12 All-Americans, 47 All-East and 42 All-ECAC players at Cortland. Those players included defensive tackle Adam Haas, who was a Gagliardi Trophy national Player of the Year finalist in 2006, and Omar Darling, the 1997 ECAC Upstate New York Player of the Year. In addition, his players have earned 92 All-NJAC honors since the program joined the league in 2000, highlighted by the selection of defensive tackle Adam Haas as the 2005 NJAC Defensive Player of the Year. An assistant coach at Division I-AA Villanova University from 1984-1996, MacNeill is Cortland’s 11th head coach since the school’s modern era of football began in 1924. MacNeill served as linebackers coach at Villanova and was the team’s defensive coordinator from 1988-96. One of the nation’s top defensive coaches, MacNeill’s charges consistently ranked among

About SUNY Cortland Located atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame. Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

the 2002-03 school year. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only six nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 12 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 13 NCAA Division III team titles. The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on-campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.” The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena, racquetball and squash courts, a wrestling room, modern athletic training facilities and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility. Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartantextured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.

The Cortland athletic program placed third nationally out of approximately 430 colleges and universities in the 2006-07 all-sport United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup Division III standings. The award was formerly known as the Sears Directors’ Cup from 1995-2002 and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup in
