President’s Corner

August 2016

Hard to believe it is August already! I spent a lot of time in my studio during the July heat working on projects and completing UFO’s. It is nice to have that feeling of accomplishment.

President: Debbie Hughes Vice-Pres: Judy Martsolf 2nd Vice-Pres/Games Manager: Michelle Coker Secretary: Charlene Knoll

I’m really looking forward to the SSQ auction in August. This is something new for SSQ and I hope you all enjoy it. Be sure to go to the CQC website and sign up for Ami Sims’ workshop. I attended a lecture of Ami’s at Quilt Fest in UT a few years ago—you will enjoy it. Deb

Nomination Committee Announcement It is approaching the time of year to begin the process of electing an executive board for 2017. I encourage all of you to consider stepping up and serving our organization. If you really can't commit to holding a board position, consider helping one of our numerous committees. It is a great way to get acquainted with many other members. Please remember if you are submitting another member’s name for a board position, that member should give you their prior approval. A member of the nominating committee will be calling you in the next few weeks. You can contact Vicky Smith, Judy Martsolf or Lauri Burgesser.

TIPS by Char:

The tips this month are courtesy of Marti Michell, developer of the Perfect Patchwork System and Craftsy instructor. I admit I have not tried these tips, but if she says they work, they do. TIP: When cutting batting with a rotary cutter, put newspaper under the batt so the fuzzy lint will not embed itself into the mat. That is a lot easier than using tweezers to remove the lint. (Of course, you may have to replace the rotary cutter blade more often.) TIP: To smooth out a quilt batt after it has been removed from its packaging, place it in the dryer with a wet towel FOR 3 MINUTES ONLY. Yes, stand by the dryer! TIP: When joining pieces of scrap batting, overlap the pieces slightly and cut a curved line with a rotary cutter. The edges will match with no gap and can be taped together on one side with quilting tape. If the quilted item will be constantly washed, tape both the top and underside of the pieces.

Playing with a Full Deck Challenge In 2017, SSQ is trading programs with Columbine Quilters in Montrose. I wanted to present a program to them that represents and showcases the work of as many SSQ members as possible. That is the reason this new challenge is being presented. I hope that many of you will jump in and participate. I think this will be a fun group activity. The challenge is to create a quilt that is your representation of a randomly drawn card. I will have a deck of cards to draw from at the next few general meetings. If you're excited and want to jump right in, call me and I will do a random card draw for you. 1. All entries must be 16 x 20 inches finished. Corners should be rounded, not square. Quilts must be 3 layers: front, batting and backing. 2. You may use any and all techniques, i.e., applique, thread painting, crazy quilting, embellishments. 3. The color of the suit you draw should be a dominant color of the quilt. Example..Diamonds and hearts should be red and spades and clubs should be black. You are NOT required to put the number of the card in the corners like a traditional playing card. You may do more than one card if you like but you must wait a minimum of one month to allow others an opportunity to participate. JOKERS.. Jokers can be done as a 2nd entry, but you must complete at least one of the regular cards as well. Prizes will be presented at the end of the challenge. Deadline for all completed quilts will be the April 2017 general meeting. We hope to hang this group of quilts at the spring Barnes & Noble fundraiser and take the group of quilts to Montrose for their program. We will also explore other venues to show these quilts. Feel free to bring your individual quilts for show and tell through the rest of the challenge. That will help nudge the rest of us to get them finished. Let's have fun and push your creativity! Any questions just call. Vicky Smith Click on link to see examples: https://www.flickr.com/photos/60924502@N00/sets/72157644199281458/

Block of the Month, by Rachel Fry

** PREPARING THE PIECES AND SEWING THE BLOCK ** Start off by cutting the Color 1 7” x 13” strip into four 3 ½ x 6 ½” rectangles…… Now cut the Color 2 7” x 21” strip into twelve 3 ½” squares… Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2, 4” x 8” strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark 4” square lines. Mark the diagonals in the directions shown at the left. Now sew a Scant ¼” above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the square lines and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Square these back to 3-1/2” if needed…. Next make the rectangle units, by placing a Color 2 3-1/2” square, right sides together against one end of a Color 1 rectangle….all edges aligned. (I show them staggered just so you can see what two pieces of fabric I mean). On the back of the square, lightly draw the diagonal. Sew ON this marked line. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press towards the darker color. Repeat this with another Color 2 square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four units like this. Square these back to be 3-1/2” x 6-1/2” if needed….. Now sew A Color 2 square to the left of a two colored half square, using that same scant ¼” seam. Make four units like this…..

NEXT…….

Sew each half square/square unit to a rectangle unit as shown at left …… Then piece the block, by sewing the four quadrants together! Congratulations!! :o)

Programs Information 2017 I know it is unusual to list the programs for the upcoming year this far in advance; however, I felt that the members should have an idea so they could plan ahead for any classes they may want to take. The Board has made the decision to be aggressive on programs for 2017. Colorado West had previously agreed to participate in 4 workshops but cut back to 2, Carol Ann Waugh and Jan Krentz. We are currently working with the Montrose guilds to share programs with them as well. I am showing the budget process for each program so that all members have an idea of what it costs to bring people in for our programs. You have told the board you want better quality speakers and we have tried to provide that for you. I have provided the website addresses of all the speakers in case you are unfamiliar with the name. The Program Committee (Vicky Smith, Janet Coleman and me) hopes you are all as excited about 2017 as we are. Debbie Hughes

SSQ General Meeting Minutes July 13, 2016

New Business: Vicky Smith reported that the nominations committee will be making phone calls to the membership asking for nominations for the 2017 Executive Board. Judy Martsolf and Lauri Burgesser will help Vicky make the calls.

President Deb Hughes called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM. As the first order of business, two members from the Palisade Chamber of Commerce presented information about the fall Fiber and Quilt Show, October 8 at Palisade Memorial Park. Palisade is also promoting the Barns (and Houses) Quilt Trail. SSQ members were asked to participate in both activities. The Palisade Peach Festival in August was also promoted.

Vicky also reported on programs for 2017. She reported on an agreement with Columbine Quilt Guild of Montrose to do a trunk show for SSQ in May; SSQ would present a trunk show in August for Columbine.

Hughes also announced that Colorado West would be holding a yard sale from 9 to 3 on July 23 at Goodwill. Silt would be having a quilt show on July 30 from 11 to 4. Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival will be August 26-27. Today, July 13 is Chili’s give back day for SSQ. By showing the voucher advertising such, 15% of the table’s total check/s will be given to SSQ. SSQ qualifies because of our non-profit status. President Hughes asked for a show of hands of those who would going to Chili’s for lunch so we could notify the servers. Karla Tilford has agreed to become the website liaison whose duty it is to contact Barnaby Pedge, the webmaster of SSQ’s website, with updated information and pictures about meetings and events to refresh our website each month. Helen Stout sent a thank you note for a quilt she received from SSQ. Charlene Knoll announced that Jacque Gaskill was at Community Hospital with pneumonia that was not responding to antibiotics. (She is now at home and would appreciate continuing phone calls, emails and cards.) Minutes: The June General Meeting minutes were approved after Helen Baltz-Jones made a motion for their acceptance and Jo Cornforth seconded the motion. Minutes will be filed. Treasurer’s Report: The full report will be in August newsletter. Beginning Balance: $21,137.62; Revenue: $882.48; Expenses: $2236.83; Checking balance: $19,783.27; Saving balance (.31 interest): 12,527.96; Total: $32,311.23. Bonnie Stenger made a motion to accept the report and Linda Keller seconded the motion. Motion was approved and the report will be filed for audit. Membership: 68 members were in attendance with one new member. Old Business: No old business was presented.

Vicky also presented the challenge “Playing with a Full Deck”. Cards will be drawn next month; the draw will be random with no trading of the cards allowed. The participant will construct a quilt 16” by 20” representing the card drawn. Keep the suit in the proper color, for example, if representing the 3 of spades the color would be black. The 3 of hearts would be in red. Round the corners of the quilt. It is your interpretation of the card. Participants may do more than one card. Those who complete 1 card quilt will be eligible to depict a joker, the card eligible for prizes. Deadline for the quilts is March. Goal is to have them for Spring Barnes and Noble, August trunk show and perhaps a display at the library or Goodwill. Columbine Quilt Guild of Montrose is sponsoring a workshop on August 6. For more information, contact Cheryl Yergrel at 596-1549. Door Prizes: Judy Martsolf, substituting for Janet Coleman, and Linda Keller handed out door prizes. Programs: Our program and workshop presenter for August, Kelly Gallagher-Abbot, has had to cancel due to eye surgery. We will instead have a live auction as a SSQ fund raiser. Four quilt tops were donated in past years to Community Affairs which are not suitable to the wear and tear our cancer quilts receive. One of the quilt tops may have been constructed in the late 1800’s. Helen BaltzJones of Community Affairs asked the board for their approval of a live auction in lieu of the Gallagher-Abbot cancellation. Members may also auction UFO’s with all proceeds donated to SSQ. During the business portion of the August meeting, Jeff Vogel and Angie Jones of Hi Fashion will make a presentation on the spring quilt market with emphasis on the trends in quilting which were evident at the market, Peggy Pretti, program chair for 2016, reminded the membership that Colorado Quilt Council (CQC) will be having their August meeting in Grand Junction. SSQ is the host for that meeting. Ami Simms will present a lecture on Saturday, August 27 and a workshop on “Crumb Quilting” on Sunday, August 28. Membership to CQC is $12.50 after August 1. Workshop fee is $55 for members and $75 for non-members. Janet Wheeler will send forms for membership and/or workshop by email to members of SSQ. Members may wish to take the workshop since the Gallagher-Abbot workshop has been cancelled. 10

cont. from pg 10 Committee Reports:

After the birthday bash in September, a sew-in will be held at the Ed Bozarth-Mark Miller Chevrolet Community Room from 1-5. Members may work on quilts for the December Barnes and Noble display. Themes are Angels and Trees. Other UFO projects are also welcome. Block of the Month: Seven Shooting Stars blocks were displayed. Christmas Stockings: June Hall reported that 49 stockings were turned in today. The stockings will be presented to Mesa County Foster Children’s Program in October. There are still a few kits to be picked up and finished. Library: Janet Wheeler informed the members that Charlene Knoll had read “The Patchwork Mysteries” series in 3 weeks’ time. There are 27 books in the series which can be read in sequence or as individual stand-alone books. They are easy reads. For ease of selection, there is a synopsis of the story on the back of each book. A quilt or quilts is the main focus of each book. Some quilts are more intriguing than others. Charlene especially enjoyed the book on making a memory quilt and the book on the identification of an adoptee’s birth parents told in pictorial applique.
