Sunday, November 20, 2016 “Choosing Sides” Christ the King
UPCOMING SERVICES Testify “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” These words are as true today as they were when first spoken midst the turmoil of the Vietnam War. To testify is to speak up and to speak out because it is the right thing to do. To tell the truth about what we see, what we have experienced, and what we believe can be risky. It can also be a great joy to share what God has done in our lives. In any case, to testify is part of Christian discipleship.

Today in the Main Level Fellowship Hall The Discipleship Ministries team will provide a table today to sign up for upcoming Christian Education opportunities at Foundry Church, as well as
share information about how to register for classes, learn more about learning opportunities, and connect to Foundry Church on online. Fair Trade products are being made available at wholesale prices on Sundays through December 11 (or as long as supplies last). The Peace with Justice Mission is encouraging giving fair trade chocolate, coffee, olive oil, and nuts for holiday gifts. Buying fair trade ensures that the farmers are paid a living wage and supports sound environmental practices. ID Ministry: It’s getting colder and our unhoused neighbors can use your help. The ID Ministry needs men’s jackets, coats, reader eyeglasses, pants and belts. For this and all your generous support, we thank you!
Our Gathered Prayers Whether in response to the election or the violence which has plagued communities close to home and abroad, many of us find ourselves in need of prayer and reflection. Today we invite you to join in an interactive form of prayer by literally sharing your prayers with the Foundry community. The Racial Justice Ministry team will provide a space for you to write your prayers on newsprint. These will be incorporated into our Advent worship artwork, prayerfully cut and assembled into banners for the sanctuary.

Wednesday, November 23: Thanksgiving Eve Service Asbury UMC, our sister church located at 926 11th St. NW, is holding a Thanksgiving Eve service on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. All are welcome to attend. Parking is available on levels 2 and 3 of Nation Garage adjacent to the church on 11th Street. The garage attendant will provide visitors with a parking pass to place on their dash board. Thursday, November 24: Trot for Hunger Come join Foundry in the Trot for Hunger sponsored by So Others Might Eat. You can still join as an individual and run with The Foundry Gobble Trotters. The run/walk starts at 8:00am at Freedom Plaza. Contact Michael Potesta (
[email protected]) for more details. Sunday, November 27: Special Offering: United Methodist Student Day Did you know United Methodists shared $408,155 in offerings on Student Day last year? Your gifts went to scholarships for diligent United Methodist
students in local congregations just like yours — a nursing student who sings in the choir, a future Sunday school teacher, and a young leader preparing for ministry. Foundry will donate half the offering to American University and half to the general church. 10:10 - 11:05 AM: The Uncluttered Heart Join us as we use Rev. Beth Richardson’s book, The Uncluttered Heart, to sweep out the corners of our hearts, cleaning up the clutter to make space for God’s hope, peace, joy, love, and presence this Advent Season. For more information, please email Pastor Will at
[email protected]. New Practicing Spirituality Series: Devotional Workshop The Practicing Spirituality class will host a series of creative workshops to explore techniques and incubate ideas for Foundry’s 2017 Lenten devotional. Starting on November 27 at 10:15 AM, we’ll explore artful ways to witness and share what takes place in Scripture. Continuing into January, we’ll examine the state of our hearts in sessions devoted to inspiring ourselves and each other to create essays or artwork to be published and shared with the congregation during Lent. Saturday, December 3: Community Christmas Festival 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM All Ages Welcome! Help us welcome our neighbors this season as we join together in building gingerbread houses, creating Christmas crafts, meeting Santa, and enjoying snacks! We’ll also be collecting gloves and knit hats for adults that will be given to participants of our ID Ministry. Please let Mariana Vock (
[email protected]) know if you’re able to serve: staff a craft room, be a greeter, or serve wherever needed. We need adults and youth who are willing to help! Sunday, December 4th: Deconstructing White Privilege The journey of anti-racism work is ongoing. We will join The United Methodist General Commission on Religion and Race in exploring facets of privilege. Whether you’d like to learn the differences between privilege and white privilege, or want to take the steps to deconstruct white privilege, this event’s for you. Held at 12:45 PM in the Upstairs Fellowship Hall. All are welcome.
Stewardship Update Received as of 11/16/2016 for the 2017 General Operating Fund: 189 Pledges – Goal 400 pledges $1,173,351.00 Pledged – Goal $1,600,000 If you have not made your pledge, please do so now! Options for our Little Wigglers! To allow for families to worship together, we have several options for our children and families during worship services. •Childcare: an opportunity provided in the Childcare Center from 8:00 AM - 2:15 PM for infants and children through three years of age whose adults want to attend worship services or serve in another area of ministry. Foundry’s Childcare is provided by wellqualified paid staff and loving servant leaders. •Children’s Worship Bulletins: this offering can be found in the narthex and is available for readers & non-readers. They are lectionary based and their content reinforces the Sunday School lesson for the week. •Wiggle Bags: this offering is available in the narthex on the Wiggle Tree. Wiggle bags contain coloring and activity sheets and crayons. When finished with the wiggle bag, please drop it in a basket at the back of the sanctuary. • Wiggle Space: this offering is located in the main level fellowship hall in the corner close to the stained glass windows and is available all day on Sunday. There is a Wiggle Cart that contains books recommended by our Dive in Ministry team, a large comfortable rug for children to crawl on, video monitors and audio of the worship service, beverage service, and plenty of space for adults to interact with children. This is not a controlled access space and adults are required to supervise their children. Unsupervised children will be directed back to their adults and not allowed to stay in this space. •Wiggle Room: this offering is provided in room 203 from 9:10 - 9:55 AM & 11:25 AM - 12:25 PM for ages 4 & up and is for children whose adults would like to be in the worship service. Adults must bring children to this room and pick them up. Supervision is provided by background checked adult servant leaders.
ADVENT Foundry 2016
In this season of anticipation, we hope in God’s promise of a world restored. Prophecy is the work and words of those who point to that promise—even when it seems absurd. Jesus is both a fulfillment of prophecy and a prophet of what is to come. In the course of these holy days, we will consider how we participate in prophetic witness in our lives and as a congregation.
