Welcome to Little T!

A Liturgical Style of Wor ship This booklet will hopefully help make you feel more comfortable, especially if this is new to you. Liturgical worship simply means we follow a particular order of serv ice that is grounded in liturgy or "the work of the people". We use a liturg ical form of service for our gatherings because we are not putting on a show for people to watch. Rather, the liturgy walk s us through the wonderful sto ry of Jesus Christ in a sequence that brings home the good news of God's grace to us. Each week we are brought back to the strange and amazing story of God with us. Today, our service is from the Book of Alternative Services (BAS) developed in 1985. If this is new to you please join in only when you are comfortable. You'll get the hang of it after a few goes. Look out for STAND STAND SIT STAND and SIT SIT and SIT/KNEEL SIT/KNEEL SIT/KNEEL (whichever is your preference) instructions or just follow what your neighbour is doing (assuming they have been here before). In general, we stand to praise, sit to learn and sit/kneel to pray. Bold print directs you to join in unison.

CHILDR EN Welcome children! Nursery and P re-K care JK/SK and Elementary children (Gr. 1-5) programming will start in the Parish Hall after the outside portion of the service. P ick up all children directly after the service before Coffee Hour at Little Trinity House. Email questions to Tiffany Robinson, children@littletrinit y.org

2

YOUTH Campaigners (Grades 6-8) begin the service at the War Memorial, then head to the Annex (403 King E) with Morgan after the outside portion of the service. Triniteens (Grades 9-12) meet Friday evenings at the Annex and through out the city. Contact Morgan Chu for details at youth@littletrin ity.org.

AN ACT O F R EM EMBR ANCE We begin our service gathered at the War Memorial in Little Trinity Park in an Act of Remembrance.

INTRODUCTION Tyler Wigg-Stevenson, Assistant Pastor

We meet in the presence of God. We commit ourselves to work in penitence and faith for reconciliation between the nations, that all people may, together, live in freedom, justice and peace. We pray for all who in bereavement, disability and pain continue to suffer the consequences of fighting and terror. We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives, in world wars and conflicts past and present, have been given and taken away. We will remember them. READING OF THE HONOUR ROLL

SILENCE THE REVEILLE PRAYERS Gracious Lord, grant to our governments and all who serve in public life wisdom and skill, imagination and energy. Protect them from corruption and the temptation to serve themselves. Help us all to commit ourselves to the common good, that our land may be a secure home for its peoples, through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. Amen.

4

God of the nations, whose sovereign rule brings justice and peace, have mercy on our broken and divided world. Establish your peace in the hearts of all and banish from them the spirit that makes for war, that all races and peoples may learn to liv e as members of one family and in obedience to your laws, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Eternal God, shepherd of your people, we feel the fleeting passage of life, and know how fragile our existence is on this tiny planet. We confess with the prophet Isaiah: 'All flesh is grass, and all its glo ry is like the flo wers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall... .' Yet we also confess: 'The word of our God stands forever.' Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. In our human frailty, we look to you, for you alone can comfort and sustain us. Have mercy on us, O God. Hear our cries to you, our loving Father, and lead us all, as pilg rims, through the darkest valley into the light of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen. O CANADA O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Ruler supreme, who hear est humble prayer, Hold our dominion within thy loving care; Help us to find, O God, in thee A lasting, rich reward, As waiting for the Better Day, We ever stand on guar d. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

May God grant to the living, grace; to the departed, rest; to the Church, the Queen, the Commonwealth, and all humankind, peace and concord; and to us and all his servants, life everlasting. Amen. 5

OUR SERVICE CONTINUES INSIDE THE SANCTUARY Peter Robinson, Honorary Assistant

A special welcome to those visiting with us today! To help us get to know you, please fill out one of the Connection Cards that you will find hanging on the pew in front of you. You can hand it to one of our ministers, Peter or Tyler, as you leave today. Musical Worship

Join in with our worship team as y ou feel led, sitting or standing as y ou are comfortable. The historic tradition uses music and song to direct ourselves towards God in praise and to direct our own hearts towards God's truth. Opening Prayers

Worshipping God must begin with a heart prepared to enter into his presence. The Collect is a pray er that collects the intentions of our service; each Sunday there is a different collect paired with the readings and sermon message.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD LESSON 1 Peter 2:4-12, 3:8-18a

SIT SIT SIT

John Haughton

2 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by mortals but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “ Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honour is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8

and “ A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11

Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honourable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. [...]

3 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, love for one another as brothers and sisters, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 10 For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let them keep their tongue from evil 7

and their lips from speaking deceit; let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 11

13

Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil. 18

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL

The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 27

And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “ Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, “ John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “ But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “ You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. 31

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “ Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of humans.” 8

34

And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 For what does it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their soul? 37 For what can they give in return for their soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” The Gospel of Christ. Silent reflection CONFESSION OF FAITH

STAND STAND STAND

Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father Almighty creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He desc ended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Confession of Faith

Standing together with Christians throughout the centuries and throughout the world today , we affirm our faith by say ing these ancient words together. Alternating between the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed, together we acknowledge the historical truths of our faith, passed down throughout the ages.

9

Prayers of the People

The prayers of the people are the response of the community to the proclamation of the word. They are a moment when the gathered community exercises its baptismal role. Baptized into Christ, and made one in his body , we pray with Christ, who constantly pray s for us and for all of creation (Hebrews 7:25). Together we pray for our church, our city and our world.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness.

10

Most merciful God we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbour s as ourselves. We are truly sorr y and we humbly r epent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. OFFERTORY WORSHIP

Confession & Absol ution

Not forgetting our nature as fallen human beings: on one hand, we fall short of what we should do and who we should be, on the other hand, we are reminded that God is loving and merciful, we recognize that we are sinners and he reaches out to us nonetheless; we are assured that God has looked upon us with mercy and we have been forgiven of our sins. We say the confession together to illustrate we are all in need of God's mercy and forgiveness. Even if the person standing in front of y ou looks like they have it all together.

STAND STAND STAND

This part of the service expresses our thanks to God for giving us all that we have. By honouring God first with the resources he has given us, we respond to the trust he places in us to use his resources to advance his work locally and around the world. The offering plate is meant for those who call Little Trinity home, so if you're visiting, please do not feel obligated to give.

THE PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS We work for you, God, in whatever we do. Paid labour, volunteer work, our home life, all our time we spend for you. Thank you for jo bs which provide us with an income; we share the fruit of our labour with you, knowing that you are the Great Provider. Use these offerings in your kingdom work, as you provide good news, healing and hope to all people. Amen. 11

The Doxology

These words, penned in 1674 by Thomas Ken, anchor us in the reality that our only proper response to God is worship and praise.

Eucharistic Prayer

Modeled after Jewish table prayers of blessing, the Eucharistic Pray er, or the Great Thanksgiving, explores and explains something of the wonder of Jesus' death for us, as Paul wrote:"as often as y ou eat this bread and drink the cup, y ou proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." The prayer contains the words Jesus used during the Last Supper. As we hear these words and go forward together, we feed on him, in our hearts, by faith, with thanksgiving. The table is prepared while the prayer is spoken, much as we prepare ourselves to receive the Eucharist.

THE DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Praise Him all creatures here below ! Praise Him above ye heavenly host ! Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. COMMUNION EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

SIT/KNEEL SIT/KNEEL SIT/KNEEL

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us giv e thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right to thank you and praise you, holy and gracious God, creator of all things, ruler of heaven and earth, sustainer of life, for you are the source of all goodness, rich in mercy and abounding in love; you are faithful to your people in every generation, and your word endures for ever. Therefore with angels and archangels, with the fellowship of saints and the company of heaven, we glorify your holy name, evermore praising you and singing,

Holy, holy, holy Lord...

The Sanctus (Holy, holy, holy Lord) names that which is sacred, holy , hallowed, consecrated and inviolable: "Lord, God of power and Might".

12

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth of your glory are full. Hosanna hosanna hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because in your tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order that the world might be saved through him. He made you known by taking the form of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching out to the lost. Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted the power of sin and disarmed it for ever. In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted as your children; by your pardon you have made us worthy to praise you. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory. Confident in his sovereign purpose, we declare our faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cup we may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in our will to serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, 13

a pure and holy sacrifice, acceptable to you, knitting us together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glo ry, now and forever. Amen. The Lord's Prayer

the Lord's Prayer is the pray er instituted by Jesus himself (Matthew 6; Luke 11). This prayer has been handed down from generation to generation, teaching us to pray .

THE LORD'S PRAYER Let us pray, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD "I am the bread of life," says the Lord. "Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst." Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy ar e they who trust in him! The gifts of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. COMMUNION

All those who have placed their trust in Jesus as Saviour and Lord are welcome to the Lord's table. Please follow the sidespeople to the outer aisle and gather around the rail from the front to the back. Return to your pew from the centre aisle once your whole group has received communion. Gluten-free wafers available upon request from communion administrant.

PRAYERS AFTER COMMUNION

Gracious God, in this sacrament we have shared the body and blood of Christ. May we who have been nourished by holy things bear witness to his light, and share in his eternal priesthood; for he is Lord for ever and ever. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayers After Communion

God gets the last word in our service. First, he blesses us, and then he sends us out into the world, to live a life that reflects his love, mercy and truth. We have been given the rest and nourishment we need to sustain our own lives, and we have been given the gifts we need to go out and Serve our World in the name of Jesus.

THE BLESSING The peace of God which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always. Amen. ANNOUNCEMENTS

ADV ENT INVIT ATIO N

2016

How could we serve the world if we worked together to show the love of Jesus Christ? That's the vision behind the Advent Invitation, a church-wide initiative debuting on November 27. We're inviting the small groups at Little Trinity to each take on a project of loving service during the season of Advent -- that time in the church year where we anticipate the birth of the Lord Jesus. WHAT: The Invitation is intentionally open-ended so that a group can engage any way it likes. One group might brainstorm about creative ways to meet a neighbourhood need. Another might organize a carol sing that doubles as a collection for the food bank. Another might collaborate with a project like Prison Fellowship's Angel T ree Program, which supplies gifts to the families of incarcerated individuals. If your group is stumped for ideas, contact Marie MacNeill, Little T Small Groups Coordinator. She's here to help! We'll also be cultivating opportunities that interested groups could sign up for. WHO: We're inviting people to serve through their small groups, rather than as isolated individuals -- working in groups amplifies our efforts and brings us together, as well. If you're not part of an existing small group, you can still join a group for a service project -- just talk to Marie, who can connect you with others. T o put this within our threefold ministry framework of Love God - Grow Together - Serve Our World: this is about taking the small groups that are our primary vehicle to Grow T ogether and directing them outward to Serve Our World. WHEN: The project debuts on the first Sunday of Advent, November 27, and runs through Christmas. We'll gather to celebrate the Invitation on January 8, the feast of the Epiphany, which commemorates the gifts of the three Wise Men to the infant Jesus. During the January 8 service, we'll share together the works of love that we've done -- offering them as our own gifts to the Lord. Questions? Contact Marie MacNeill, Small Groups Coordinator, at [email protected].
