Message From Fr. Todd Dear friends, Memorial Day signals the unofficial beginning of summer and so we gratefully enter into this special season of the year. For students it is a time to rest from the work of the classroom and for many people it will be a time to step out of the regular routine and enjoy at least a few days of vacation. May it be a time to take stock of the gifts of nature and family and friends that surround us and grow in appreciation of these gifts. For those who are traveling, web pages like Catholic Mass Times.org are a great way to plan ahead for Sunday Mass. This time of year marks commencement exercises for graduating high school and college seniors. We congratulate all of our parish sons and daughters who are marking this milestone and ask God’s blessings upon futures that are now unfolding. Welcome home to St. Mark to all of our college students who have returned for the summer! Summer also signals the beginning of parish festivals and our own St. Mark Funfest is quickly approaching! June 13,14,and 15th will see our parish campus buzzing with activity and fun for all ages. The festival gives us the opportunity to work together for a common cause and to grow as a community and to show to others that special spirit that is St. Mark. It also gives us the opportunity to raise needed funds to support the ministries of our parish and continue to care for the facilities that have been entrusted to us. Special thanks to all who are selling the raffle tickets that have been mailed to each parish household and which will account for a big part of the festival’s success. Please remember that every parishioner is an ambassador of St. Mark during Funfest. May we welcome and treat each person who joins us as we would welcome and treat Jesus! This summer is also special because we are preparing for the publication of our new Parish Pictorial Directory. Many parishioners have already signed up to have a picture taken for the directory. For those who have not, it’s still not too late to schedule an appointment by going to our parish website or by calling Ann Berkemeier at 787-2058. Ann has taken on the herculean task of coordinating the scheduling of appointments for pictures and we are grateful to her for this special gift of time, talent and enthusiasm that she gives to St. Mark. I am sure that when we hold the new Pictorial Directory in our hands we will all be proud to be a part of it. See you at Mass!

Question of the Week Q. Last week Pope Francis spoke about the salvation of atheists. Do atheists go to heaven? If everyone goes to heaven, what’s the point of believing? A. Pope Francis’ comments were made during his daily Mass on Wednesday, May 22, and made headlines around the world. As always, context is important. The Gospel on that day was from St. Mark and it was the passage in which the Apostles object to good being done by others. Jesus tells them to rejoice wherever good is being done. The Apostles, and perhaps all of us, have a human tendency to want to have a monopoly on Jesus. We may be tempted to think that good can only be done by those who are a part of ‘our’ group – whatever that group may be. Jesus challenges us to recognize that we do not have a monopoly on God or on good that is done in the world. Much good is undoubtedly done by Catholics around the world. It is a reason to rejoice! Much good is also done by Christians belonging to ecclesial communions born of the Reformation. Again, rejoice! And much good is done also by Jewish, Moslem and Hindu groups in the world. Rejoice! And Pope Francis continued the reflection on Mark’s Gospel by saying that good is also done by those who do not possess the gift of faith. Once again, the Gospel calls us to rejoice wherever good is being done. Does this mean that everyone automatically goes to heaven? No. God wills the salvation of all and all salvation comes through Jesus. But the Church does not have a monopoly on salvation. God alone reads the hearts of men and God alone knows the light that each person has. It will be according to this light that each person will be judged. As I reflect on this I appreciate all the more the gift of faith. Why do I have this gift? Certainly I am not smarter or holier or better than anyone else. I cannot not believe! In Jesus I see the past present and future of humanity come together. Jesus is my way, my truth and my life. Why I have been given this faith, I do not know. That I have been given this faith I do know. And Jesus once said to whom much has been given, much will be required. Those who have been given the gift of faith are called to live it and to share it. We are called not to judge others but to work together with all people for the good of all. Pope Francis reminded us in his homily that the desire to do good comes from God and that it is a place where all people of good will can find common ground. Our faith calls us to do good and to rejoice wherever good is done. As I read Pope Francis’ homily, it brought to mind the depiction of the final judgment in the 25th chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel. Those who are saved ask, “Lord, when did we see you hungry or naked or in prison?” And they are told, “Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of time!”

In today’s first reading, Melchizedek blesses Abram, who then “gave him a tenth of everything” (Genesis 14:20). We are called to be generous not because the Lord needs our money, but because it is a material way we can recognize that he is first in our lives.
