This year’s topics include: doctoral level learning outcomes, creating a supportive environment for international students, professional master’s degrees, graduate student unionization, models of student funding and NSF’s priority goal on graduate education.

Dean Dialogues Technical Workshops This year we are offering four technical workshops: Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 - 5:00 pm

International Student Recruitment On a Budget

Participants in this session will learn new strategies for maximizing their budgets for recruiting international students. Topics will include: effective strategies for using web-based communications such as social media, webinars and video to engage and recruit potential students; new opportunities to amplify outreach with external partners such as Education USA; and cost-effective, “in-house” strategies for evaluating student credentials. Strategies and Skills for Fundraising

Following her plenary session, Penelepe Hunt will share fundamental strategies that every graduate dean should understand in order to prepare and successfully execute a development agenda. Sharing the stage with a graduate dean, Ms. Hunt will offer examples of how to create an environment that will make the donor a life-long contributor. Wednesday morning from 9:00 am – noon Got Data? Now What?

Various national datasets are rich with information about graduate students. Join our speakers as they lead a three-part workshop on national data, including an overview of trends in graduate education, a discussion about how campus leaders can access and use selected national datasets, and examples of administrators who have put some of these data to use. Pregnancy, Parenting, and Post-Baccalaureate Study: Meeting Legal Requirements

This interactive workshop will provide a primer on the impact of Title IX on the graduate student experience. Issues such as parental leave, accommodations for pregnant students, and the effects of changing employment status on graduate students’ rights will be discussed. The boundaries and overlap of Title IX with related federal laws like the ADA and FMLA will be explored.

Dean Dialogues are unique opportunities for meeting participants to learn more about graduate education issues in a distinctive, interactive format. These 90 minute sessions begin with a 20 minute presentation, followed by an opportunity for participants to break up into small groups for more in-depth discussions about the topic, and conclude with presentations from the small groups summarizing their discussions. Dean Dialogues will occur on Sunday and Monday afternoons with two different Dialogues running concurrently. This year, the Dean Dialogue topics are: SUNDAY

Welcome to Savannah What you need to know…

HISTORY

Savannah's recorded history begins in 1733, the year General James Oglethorpe and 120 passengers landed on a bluff along the Savannah River. Oglethorpe named the 13th and final American colony "Georgia" after England's King George II, and Savannah became its first city.

Savannah, voted one of the 10 most beautiful places in America by USA Weekend Magazine, was America's first planned city. Oglethorpe laid the city out in a series of grids that allowed for wide open streets intertwined with shady public squares and parks that served as town meeting places and centers of business. Savannah had 24 original squares and 22 of these community icons are still in existence today and enjoyed by the millions of visitors each year. Savannah's Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and is one of the largest historic landmarks in the country. Significant buildings that were saved and restored include: the Herb House (1734), the oldest building in Georgia; the Pirate’s House (1754), mentioned in the book, Treasure Island; and the Olde Pink House (1789), site of Georgia's first bank.

Visitors are drawn to Savannah for its elegant architecture; ornate ironwork, fountains, and green squares; and awardwinning restaurants. The city has received the designations of “Best American City for Food” in KitchenDaily.com in July 2014 and “Top 10 Trending Destinations” at Kayak.com in February 2015.

Shuttle service is also available with advance reservation from Chatham Area Transit. The rate is $8 for round-trip fares. The airport website is very informative, visit www.savannahairport.com for more details.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

Savannah enjoys a subtropical climate that makes outdoor activities possible year-round. The summers are hot with the average temperature in the 90s. Additionally, a sweater or jacket may be needed in air-conditioned hotel meeting rooms. Workshop and Institute participants usually wear business casual clothing and find that relaxed, comfortable summer attire is appropriate for all of the sessions and meals. Casual clothing is acceptable for touring.
