General Information 

*New for 2016 – Classes are 4 days a week (Monday – Thursday)



Location: Todd Hall School, 3925 W. Lunt Ave., Lincolnwood, IL 60712



Parents are responsible for transportation to and from summer school. No buses.



Students are enrolled in classes based on their grade level for the 2016-2017 school year.



Program is open to all students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade.



Each class is 55 minutes long. Students may enroll in up to 4 classes.



Tuition is $90 per class (2-hr classes are double tuition). Some classes may have additional material fees.



Families have until July 15th to withdraw from summer school and receive a full refund.



After July 15th, tuition is non-refundable except for the following reasons: a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or exclusion from a class due to class limit being met.



There are no refunds for natural disasters or inclement weather that may interfere with the operation of summer school classes.



There is no reduced price or prorated rate for missed days/weeks of summer school.

Students enrolled in Camp 74 must be enrolled in an 11:30 summer school class.

Class Descriptions 8:30 - 9:25 Book Cooks and Young Authors Grades: K-2 Teacher: Lyna Swanson This class is designed to help students enjoy reading and writing. Your child will create, write and illustrate and publish 2 books and we will read books based on themes from well-known authors in children's literature. Art and cooking techniques will also be used to help make this class a fun hands on experience.

Fairy Tale Fun! Grades: K-2 Teacher: Kelly Tokarski Fairy Tales, Fables, and Fantasy are an important part of our storytelling history. Listen to different versions of the same tale, discuss the moral and lessons learned, work from writing prompts to create your own ending and/or expand on the story. Participate in funny fairy tale plays: Spinderella, Little Late Riding Hood, Rafunzel, and more!

Get Ready for First Grade! Grades: 1 Teacher: Laura Barringer, Shari McAdams, Julie Hammel, Jennifer Gussis Come practice your ABCs and 123s! We'll touch on first grade reading, math, and writing skills in preparation for the school year.

Math Madness Grades: 1-3 Teacher: Krissy Cornelius Shake, rattle and roll… If you love math or need a boost, you should sign up for Math Madness! We will practice skills, go on scavenger hunts, and learn new math websites. Children will play fun card games, board games and computer games. We will bring math problems to life on KidPix as we write, illustrate and animate MATH.

Magic Tree House Adventures Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Allison Peck If you enjoy exploring and adventures, then this is the class for you! Join Jack and Annie while they explore history, science, and math from their magic tree house. We will learn about places like Egypt, China, and the rainforest. We will follow Jack and Annie as they study earthquakes, tornadoes, and even participate in the Olympics!

Getting Ready for 3rd Grade (2 hr session – 8:30 – 10:25) Grades: 3 Teacher: Tracy Quilici Children will work cooperatively with classmates in literature groups to read and discuss novels in order to improve comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. In addition to studying novels, children will get to display their creative and dramatic sides during Thursday’s Readers' Theater. In Math, children will practice addition, subtraction, time, and money. Thursdays we will have Game Day.

Second Grade Math Review Grades: 3 Teacher: Liz Golden This class will review second grade math standards and prepare students for third grade math. Each week students will participate in fun lessons and games to strengthen math computation and problem solving skills. This is a great course for students that could benefit from extra math practice over the summer.

8:30 - 9:25 Gym Jam Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Dave Tesnow The main purpose of this class is to introduce students to a variety of lead-up sport games and enhance their motor skills. Games include: Wiffleball,Floorhockey,TouchFootball,Basketball,Line Soccer and more.The atmosphere will be friendly and non-competitive in nature.

Grammar Rocks! Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Susan Codell In this grammar course students will learn how to improve their writing by learning fun grammatical concepts that are essential for the clear communication of meaning.

Introduction to Tech Tools Grades: 3-6 Teacher: Erin Curry In this course, students will be given instruction and repeated practice with keyboard typing in order to improve their efficiency and accuracy. The course will also provide beginning instruction on Google Drive including the use of Google docs, sheets and slides. This course is directed to students who have beginner tech skills and want to become more familiar and confident with computer tools.

Digital Photography Grades: 3-8 Teacher: Chris Edman Students will learn the basics of how to use digital cameras, the different settings available and when to use them, as well as experimenting with "digital development." We will take walking field trips to practice shooting in a variety of environments, giving students a chance to practice what they've learned.

Create Cartoons and Games with Scratch and Hopscotch Grades: 4-5 Teacher: Kara Thorstenson This class will introduce students to a variety of coding activities and games for kids. Students will create games, animations and more using the basic ideas and skills of programming and writing code. Students will have fun while learning the basic language of computing!

Performance Theatre Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Sheryl Greenstein You may not end up on Broadway, but you will be performing in Lincolnwood. During this class, the students will have the opportunity to develop acting skills while participating in theatre games and activities. They will learn about theatre "behind the scenes" while creating and participating in an end of session production.

8:30 - 9:25 Yoga Exploration Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Lori McGreal Yoga isn’t just for adults anymore! In a world of fast paced technology, hectic schedules, and outside pressures, take some time to learn the amazing lifelong practice of yoga. The class will explore a variety of yoga styles and build strength, balance, and flexibility. We will go beyond the physical practice of yoga to cover breathing techniques, relaxation, and mindfulness.

Mad Scientists Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Maureen Engel It's alive! Students will discover the fundamentals of science by becoming "mad scientists" through stimulating, hands-on experiments. This class is designed to spark the natural curiosity of students while covering the basics of biology, physics, and chemistry. Students will follow the scientific method of inquiry while having lots of fun. Science gone mad!

Read for fun! Grades: 5-6 Teacher: Wendy Kotrba Get started on your summer reading list or read popular books independently. Each participant will read a book or books or his or her choice. We'll enjoy learning in a low-key, comfortable environment (pillows!). We will cover common reading strategies like vocabulary, inference, and making meaning out of text. Open to readers of all types, emerging to advanced.

TasteBUDS -- Cooking With Friends (2 hr session – 8:30 – 10:25) Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Courtney Greene Fostering a positive relationship between children, food, and each other this double session class will allow students to work in teams to prepare nourishing dishes they'll be able to replicate on their own at home. Students will learn fun facts about the foods used in daily recipes and will develop budgeting skills when generating shopping lists.

Game Design with Scratch (2 hr session – 8:30 – 10:25) Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Jeremy Wickham Code. Play. Game. Create your own video games! Design and program your own video games using code and computer science. Learn important gaming concepts while building racing games, mazes, and other fun games. Bring your friends! No previous coding experience is necessary. Have your friends join too — the Game Design class is social and fun!

Team Sports Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Eric Baumann This class will include fun team sports including soccer, basketball and floor hockey. Students will learn and practice basic skills before enjoying the fun of friendly games in a noncompetitive, safe environment.

Join us as we learn the letters of the alphabet and their sounds, through songs, arts and crafts, and games. Each day we will use a different letter (or two) as our theme for our daily activities. 8:30 - 9:25

Awesome Gym Games Grades: K-3 Teacher: Dave Tesnow This class will feature games for children that incorporate tag,relay,individual,and group activities.Some examples include: Steal the bacon, Mr.Fox, Crows and Cranes ,Midnight, Spiders and Flies,Scooters, Bean Bags etc. The atmosphere is low key and non-competitive.

Travel Around the World Grades: 1-2 Teacher: Laura Barringer, Shari McAdams, Julie Hammel, Jennifer Gussis Travel with us around the world. Each week in class, your child will visit a new country. We'll experience culture, food, arts, and more!

Graphic Novels for Young Readers! Grades: 1-3 Teacher: Kelly Tokarski Perfect for reluctant readers, graphic novels are full length stories told in paneled, sequential, and picture format. These books are super engaging and positively impact children's visual literacy skills. Explore how the authors tell the story with so many pictures and so few words. Join us in using Comic Life, Pixie, and Digital Cameras to share our own stories in graphic format!

Fly Guy Fanatics Grades: 1-3 Teacher: Krissy Cornelius BUZZZZ!!!! Do you love Fly Guy? Come see the world through the eyes of FLYZZZ! Read, write & research the topics of the Fly Guy series. On iPads and computers we will dive into Fly Guy’s adventures: Firefighters, Insects, Dinosaurs, Sharks, and Space! This class is perfect for those who want to keep reading, writing and exploring through summer.

Oodles of Ocean Fun Grades: 1-3 Teacher: Allison Peck Fish, and dolphins, and sharks, oh my! Are you interested in learning more about the ocean, conducting science experiments, and creating crafts? Then this class is for you! We will discover the ocean’s plants and animals using books, iPads, and the computers. Take the bait and join us for what is sure to be an o-fish-ally good time!

Future Filmmakers Grades: 1-5 Teacher: Chris Edman Shoot and edit your own digital films while discovering how movies are made! Students will learn storyboarding, film editing, acting, and camera techniques while using cool digital tools like green screen and stop motion apps to create their own masterpieces.

9:30 - 10:25 Young Authors Grades: 3-4 Teacher: Liz Golden Write and illustrate your own stories using iPads and computers! Each day students will participate in a mini lesson and work on individual narratives and nonfiction stories. The students will then publish their writing using various forms of technology. By the end of the summer, each child will have a portfolio of work they can share with friends and family.

Book Cooks and Young Authors Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Lyna Swanson This class is designed as an extension for students who love reading, writing and cooking. Your child will create, write, illustrate and publish 2 books and we will read books based on themes from well-known author's in children's literature. Art and cooking techniques and food science experiments will be used to help make this class a fun hands on experience.

Creative Culture Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Maureen Engel Get your passport ready! Students will travel to different parts of the world, exploring and immersing in different cultures. Students will create works of art, learn special customs and language, play games and dance, cook native foods, and submerse themselves with cultures around the world. Students will learn about geography and some of the many countries that all contribute to our wonderful planet earth. All aboard!

Home Ec for kids Grades: 3-8 Teacher: Susan Codell Learn how to sew, prepare food, take care of yourself and others!

Authors, Books and Crafts Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Lori McGreal Come spend time with your favorite author! We will take a look at famous authors and the books they have written. We will spend time re-creating artwork to represent their stories and characters. If you love Greg from Wimpy Kid, Nikki from Dork Diaries, Emily from Amulet or Raina from Smile or Sisters, this is the class for you!

9:30 - 10:25 Math for 5th/6th Graders Grades: 5-6 Teacher: Andrew Almer This class will focus on essential skills covered in both 5th and 6th grade math. Topics will include: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals; converting fractions into decimals and percents; rounding numbers; and statistics and probability. In addition to direct instruction, the class will mix in a variety of activities and games that will help highlight these concepts.

Animation Station Grades: 5-6 Teacher: Kara Thorstenson This class will teach students the basics of animation, filmmaking, script writing, and storyboarding. Students will use a variety of materials to create stop-motion cartoons complete with sound effects, music and voices. Students will be also create online animation using different apps and websites. We will finish with a film festival where you can watch your child's masterpieces!

Class Descriptions 10:30 - 11:25 I Survived! Grades: K- 2 Teacher: Kelly Tokarski Author Lauren Tarshis has created a wonderful historical fiction series packed with adventure and vivid language. We will explore this series, further focusing on the following historical events: The Great Chicago Fire (1871), The San Francisco Earthquake (1906), Hurricane Katrina (2005), and the Joplin Tornado (2011). Compare historical and fictional details, explore character traits, and analyze the author's use of historical facts. Do you have what it takes to survive?!! 8:30 - 9:25

Junior Coding Academy Grades: K-3 Teacher: Chris Edman Do you want to learn how to start programming your own games and apps? Come learn the basics of coding at Junior Coding Academy. We will discover how to create video games and character animations while exploring different coding tools like Scratch, Code.org, Tynker, and more!

Get Ready for Second Grade! Grades: 2 Teacher: Laura Barringer, Shari McAdams, Julie Hammel, Jennifer Gussis Let's get ready for second grade! We'll practice math, reading, and writing skills in preparation for the new school year.

Factual Fun! Grades: 2-3 Teacher: Krissy Cornelius Come explore with us!!! The virtual world will be at students’ fingertips! Students will explore the “Information Superhighway” as they research a wide variety of topics and visit websites to enhance learning. Projects will be available for students to present at home too. This is a class that makes facts fun!

10:30 - 11:25 American Girls Galore Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Allison Peck Do you like the American Girl dolls? Bring your doll and come join us to learn more about the history and themes from the American Girls! We will read books, study the historical periods, explore themes, make crafts, and make new friends!

Digital Storytelling Grades: 3-4 Teacher: Kara Thorstenson This class will teach students different methods to tell stories using technology. We will use books or our own stories to inspire us to create and share multimedia stories in all different types of formats. Students will be introduced to storyboarding and the art of book and movie reviews. Most creations will be web-based, enabling students to easily share their work with their parents.

Game Traveler Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Susan Codell In this class students will have fun learning about and playing games from the past and around the world.

Sports and Games Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Eric Baumann Come and enjoy a variety of sports and fun games. Activities will include; soccer, basketball, tag and cooperative games. Basic skills and gameplay will be covered in a fun and safe environment.

Battle of the Books! Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Lori McGreal Each year, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at Lincoln Hall can participate in the Battle of the Books. This summer 4th, 5th and 6th grade students can, too! We will read books nominated for the 2016-17 Rebecca Caudill award (http://www.rebeccacaudill.org/). Mock Battles will be held to prep you for the real thing! All levels of readers welcome.

Codes, Ciphers, and Secret Languages Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Wendy Kotrba Eqfgu ytg hwp. Can you read that? It says "Codes are fun." Learn famous existing codes and be taught to create your own. Open to students who know how to write codes and those who have never written a cipher. Pig Latin and Esperanto will be spoken.

Sports Of All Sorts Grades: 4-8 Teacher: Dave Tesnow Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of team sportsin a non-competitive environment. Some examples: Flag Football, Soccer, Basketball, Kickball, Softball, Floor hockey. All rules and game concepts will be applied.

CSI - Crime Scene Investigation Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Courtney Greene CSI uses an interactive approach to learning that will give students an opportunity to immerse themselves in the complex challenges of crime scene investigation. After learning the basics of CSI, students will work together to solve the mystery of a realistic crime scene. In this simulation students will gather evidence, study the clues, analyze the data and, maybe, solve the crime!

10:30 - 11:25 Inspiring Art Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Maureen Engel What do knitting, painting, baking, and dance all have in common? They are all forms of art. This class will explore different art forms using multiple fields of study. Each week students will get to experience a different form of fine art and create something fantastic. Warning: creativity is highly contagious!

Math Enrichment for 6th/7th Graders Grades: 6-7 Teacher: Andrew Almer This class will be a project based class where students will create a multimedia project that focuses on essential skills taught in 6th and 7th grade math.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Liz Golden Have fun this summer while learning about new ways to stay active! In this class, girls will practice yoga, kickboxing, running, dance, and more. The students will also learn about additional ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle and mind. This class is a great way to gain confidence and feel good while having a great time.

Digital Photography Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Halyna Yanchuk Do you feel passionate about photography? Do you have a camera, and would like to improve your skills as a photographer? Join the class where we explore and learn different features of a digital camera. The class will consist of demonstrations, hands-on activities, and peer critiques. Students will need their own digital camera (DSLR or point-andshoot).

Storytelling with Scratch (2 hr session – 10:30 – 12:25) Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Jeremy Wickham Create. Code. Tell Stories. Create and share your own digital stories! Use the computer to design your own stories, create and share your own animations, and learn how technology is used in the film and media industry! Bring your friends! No previous coding experience is necessary. Have your friends join too - the Storytelling class is social and fun!

Cinderella Around the World Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Sheryl Greenstein The story of Cinderella is one of our most beloved fairy tales being told and retold in many cultures the world over. We will leave Lincolnwood behind and travel with Cinderella around the world. Each day we will read a version of the story, learn about that country and compare the plots and characters to the other variations.

Cursive Writing and Basic Calligraphy Grades: 2-6 Teacher: Halyna Yanchuk Students will explore the art of cursive writing and calligraphy, and will work on finding and improving their own handwriting style.

Our Great Green Globe Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Maureen Engel Lend a hand in protecting earth and all its greatness! In this environmental science class, students will learn about our valuable planet and ways they can help keep it clean. Students will engage in hands-on activities including recycling, gardening and much more. In this class, everything will seem a little greener!

Passport to the World Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Lori McGreal Hola! Ni Hao! Hello! Pack your bags and get your passports ready! Come with me as we vacation in Mexico, China, and the USA. Through meaningful, hands-on activities and technology, we will experience the culture, language, games, animals, music, and food of each country. If you like to eat with chopsticks, hit a piñata, and celebrate the 4th of July, this is the vacation for you!

Basketball/Soccer Grades: 5-8 Teacher: David Tesnow This class will enable students to refine their skills in both sports through drill and game participation. Two weeks of each sport will be introduced. We will develop strength, speed, and coordination in both sports. Class will be low key in nature.

Kerbal Space Camp Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Chris Edman Students will use the game Kerbal Space Program to assist the lovable-but-hapless Kerbals as they build spacecrafts and navigate them to distant moons, asteroids, and planets. Students will use real-world physics and engineering skills in order to complete various space missions as their understanding of STEM concepts blast off!

11:30 - 12:25 Pre-Algebra Grades: 7-8 Teacher: Andrew Almer This class is geared towards students who will be taking Algebra during the upcoming school year. Students will be introduced to topics such as: solving and graphing linear equations, functions, using graphing calculators and more.

Codes, Ciphers, and Secret Languages Grades: 7-8 Teacher: Wendy Kotrba Eqfgu ytg hwp. Can you read that? It says "Codes are fun." Learn famous existing codes and be taught to create your own. Open to students who know how to write codes and those who have never written a cipher. Pig Latin and Esperanto will be spoken.
