SUMMER PROGRAMS 2016 Welcome to Summer Camp at Greensboro Day School. A few reminders are included below. DATES: Camps begin the week of June 6 and run through the week of August 1. Greensboro Day School Camps are not in session the week of July 4. REFUNDS and PRO-RATING: Refunds will ONLY BE GIVEN for serious extenuating health or family concerns. Camp Directors will make this determination. Pro-rating will no longer be available for any reason. Please understand that when we book camps, we rely on fees to pay instructors and assistants and cover all materials, regardless if your camper joins us for two days or all five. Thanks for your cooperation! LATE REGISTRATIONS: While we make every effort to accommodate busy parents, there is a $25 fee for any registrations made after Wednesday at 5 p.m. for the upcoming week of camp. CHANGE FEES: If you need to change an existing registration, please contact Holly Hofbauer. Please note there is a $10 fee per change. Please remember that we cannot guarantee placing your camper(s) if camps are full. FOOD, DRESS, SUNSCREEN: Please send a snack, lunch and two drinks (or a refillable water bottle) each day. If you choose Afternoon Explorations, please pack another snack and drink for that as well. Please do not send soft drinks. If your child is attending a sports camp, send a water bottle. Please be sure that she or he wears closed-toe shoes, and dresses appropriately, (easy to move in, cool and comfortable clothes are best). Remember the kids play and get dirty, so please don’t send them in their “best” clothes. Please bring sunscreen or apply at home before attending camp. It is a good idea to have your child wear sunscreen every day, as we frequently eat and snack outdoors. We have an incredible summer experience planned for your child. Our HORSEPOWER Staff is committed to providing both you and your child with the peace of mind that they will have a safe, positive, fun-filled week of adventure, friendships, and memories. This camp introduces beginning and non-riders to recreational horseback riding. Topics include understanding the nature of the horse, riding skills, mounting/dismounting, equipment, handling of horses, care of the horse, and coordinated horse-rider balance. *The Horsepower Director reserves the right to decline the application of any child, or send home any child, who according to the Director’s discretion is displaying extreme inappropriate behaviors or impacts the safety of self or others. If a camper is dismissed due to behavioral/social issues, the tuition is not refundable. Students must have a completed application and parental release to participate. Kick Off to Summer In this camp will use traditional stories from around the world to help children understand the use of movement, voice, listening and concentration in creating characters for the stage. This is a developmentally appropriate introduction to theatre arts especially designed for children ages 3-6. The camp will conclude with a special demonstration performance in which the children will show the skills they have developed during the week through some of their favorite stories. WATER GAMES! $185 June 13-17

Time to get wet! Wet and Wild Kick Ball, Drip-Drip-Splash, and Water Twister will help campers stay cool this summer. Beating the heat has just begun. A field trip to Bur-Mil Park Pool will complete our fun in the sun. Marvella Taylor is a GDS 2nd grade teacher.

ALPHABET WITH FOOD $185.00 June 13-17

Cooking through the alphabet summer camp - we will experience different foods as we cook through the alphabet. The camp will also make special holiday foods along the way with the alphabet. Anne Kreistshmaier is a veteran baker, cook, and candy maker.

WES MILLER BASKETBALL ACADEMY $235 * Rising K-Rising 9th June 13-16 8:30a.m.-2 p.m. *Please note no camp on Friday and different fee. The tradition of basketball excellence at Greensboro Day School continues into the summer with a new and awesome slam dunk team! Former UNC basketball player and current head coach of the UNCG men’s basketball team Wes Miller, offers a week of exciting basketball fun. Guest appearances from former and current players will take place throughout the week. Learn the fundamentals of the game from one of the most fundamentally sound players to have played NCAA college basketball. Campers of all levels will have the opportunity to improve their skills and gain an understanding of offensive and defensive strategies. According to NCAA Rules and Regulations, All Camps & Clinics are Open to Any & All Entrants, Regardless of Skill Level (limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender). Wes Miller is a former Carolina player and a member of the 2005 National Championship team and the 2007 ACC Championship team. He is currently the head coach for the UNCG men’s basketball team.

FINE ARTS CAMP $300 June 13-17

Drawing, Painting, Sculpting, Ceramics, Photography and more! Come work with artists in the art studio for a week of creativity and fun! Students will leave with a completed portfolio of 2D and 3D work, after a gallery walk for friends and family on Friday afternoon. MOUNTAIN BIKING 101 $250 June 13-17

Grades 6th+ 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

Did you know that within a half mile of the Greensboro Day School campus is access to over 35 miles of the best municipal mountain bike trails in North Carolina!?! Looking to build on a successful first year at the 2015 GDS summer camp, we are back for even more fun for 2016 with two sessions available! [MTB 101 June 13-17 and MTB 201 July 25-29] For a full week, your child will get the opportunity to safely explore our amazing local Greensboro mountain bike trails while also learning basic mountain bike repair and maintenance. Instruction will be provided from highly experienced local bike shop mechanics combined with skills instruction and guided rides from certified International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) guides. This camp will split time between instruction, skills sessions and most importantly bike riding! All your child needs is a bike in good working condition with knobby tires and a helmet. Your child already a shredder?!? Think your child might be stoked by this camp? Spaces are limited so sign up today! The Precision Golf School Junior Program is recognized by US Kids as a Top 50 Kids Program in the nation. We believe in a dynamic, fun learning environment that is designed to improve each golfer at any skill level. Each player will begin camp with a game evaluation on day 1 and then work through a “game plan” that allows each golfer to improve and excel in each area by the end of the week. The Friday of each camp week will feature a field trip to Bur-Mil Park so players can apply their skills on the live Driving Range and Par 3 Golf Course. Accompanied by good friends and great instructors, this camp is perfect for the aspiring golfer! Lead Instructors Justin Scott & Drew Younts are Precision Certified Junior Instructors. They are the main instructors for the Precision Junior Development Program, which is a year-round golf academy here in the Triad. Drew Younts is also one of the main instructors for the Golf FORE Juniors program, which brings golf to schools in the Triad, including the after-school program at GDS.

BABY SITTING CAMP $185 June 13-17

Rising 5th-7th 8:30a.m.-2 p.m.

Babysitting Camp - campers will complete the American Red Cross online course in babysitting, practice skills, create activities to do with children, develop a business plan and marketing for their services and BABYSIT during camp! We will get hopefully get to practice with actual children during our camp. The goal is to expose campers to children of differing ages, needs and personalities. Clarissa Marshall is a 7th grade Science teacher at GDS.

June 20th-24th WEEK: MAGIC TREE HOUSE! $185 June 20-24

Rising 2nd-4th 8:30a.m.-2 p.m.

Grab your passport and come along as we embark on fun-filled magical adventures with Jack and Annie! Campers will travel through time to the land of dinosaurs, make a stop in Ancient Egypt, visit castles, go on an African safari, visit Ancient China, outer space and much more! Using huge boxes, we’ll make our own magic tree houses. Campers will enjoy crafts, games, puzzles and themed activities that help us decode the mysteries awaiting us in each Magic Tree House book. SPORTS FAN-TASTIC $185 June 20-24

Do you love all things sports? Join us for a week of sports fun! We will take a look at some familiar and some not so familiar sports. We play games indoors as well as outdoors. Calling all musicians!! Join us as we share the joy of music through song, instrument, and creative movement. Campers will enjoy creating and playing instruments as we sing, dance, and play our way through the week. Caroline Davis is an elementary school teacher, with a background in early childhood education. She is a trained Kindermusik instructor.

HOGWARTS EXPRESS $185 Session I June 20-24 Session II July 25-29

As a camper on the Hogwarts Express, you will be sorted into your House, learn the secrets of wandlore, study rare and magical creatures, practice your favorite spells, and compete in the Quidditch Cup! Yes, Quidditch! Campers will explore the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with games of all sorts, (some we’ll make ourselves!) crafts, (you’ll make your own wand!), WROCK (that’s “Wizard Rock” for you muggles out there), discussions of the book and more. Don’t worry if you haven’t read it, we’re going to listen to it during craft times, so everyone will be on the same page. The camp will end with a Hogwarts style celebration! Expecto Funtimes-O! These GDS Soccer Camps will expose new and experienced soccer players to exciting and interactive training techniques. This soccer experience is organized to challenge each player individually and teach the value of teamwork and sportsmanship. Campers will be placed in a challenging environment that will make them a better and more passionate soccer player. The camp curriculum intends to promote individual growth and technical development through basic skills, technique, and games. Brad Barto is a 5th Grade teacher at GDS and he also coaches MS Soccer. Ga.m.es and fun are emphasized in this summer camp. We will have a chess session each morning focusing on the movement of each chess piece and later in the week, strategies will be introduced. SPEED, STRENGTH & AGILITY CAMP $185.00 Rising 6th-10th June 20-24 8:30a.m.-2 p.m. Learn how to be active while having fun! This camp is geared to teach your child how to be active while increasing attributes such as their speed, overall strength, and agility. Whether your child is playing sports and wants ways to get better at that sport or just wants to be able to play longer with their friends, this camp is for them! We Are Monsters is a hilarious new musical that follows human kids into a monster cabaret filled with quirky monster characters. The adventurous humans uncover vegetarian vampires and rock n’ roll werewolves, gradually realizing there may be more to these monsters than meets the eye! Most importantly these monsters and kids discover the importance of friendship and celebrating in the attributes that make each of us different and unique. Campers will learn the basics of a choral rehearsal and perform in a choral concert at the end of the week. They will sing a variety of music from many genres including pop, theatre, classical, and even a song in a different language. Spend the week with us as we take a look at some of Disney's popular and not so popular heroes and heroines. We will have arts, crafts, stories, movies, and treats. Come and join us! WACKY WEAVERS $185 July 11-15

Learn how weaving came to be (ancient Greek myth), are people the only weavers? Spiders, birds, and other mammals are too. Campers will experience simple darkroom techniques such as photo-grams and pinhole camera images and then transition to working in the digital age. They will learn the basic parts of a digital camera, as well as learn about photographic com-positional rules and how to use these rules to develop a better vision for what makes a good photograph. This week long summer camp will offer boys and girls the opportunity to build a peaceful, cooperative, fun and exciting world using the GDS Minecraft server. We will turn the Lower School Technology Lab into Minecraft World! The Precision Golf School Junior Program is recognized by US Kids as a Top 50 Kids Program in the nation. We believe in a dynamic, fun learning environment that is designed to improve each golfer at any skill level. Each player will begin camp with a game evaluation on day 1 and then work through a “game plan” that allows each golfer to improve and excel in each area by the end of the week. The Friday of each camp week will feature a field trip to Bur-Mil Park so players can apply their skills on the live Driving Range and Par 3 Golf Course. Accompanied by good friends and great instructors, this camp is perfect for the aspiring golfer! Lead Instructors Justin Scott & Drew Younts are Precision Certified Junior Instructors. They are the main instructors for the Precision Junior Development Program, which is a year-round golf academy here in the Triad. Drew Younts is also one of the main instructors for the Golf FORE Juniors program, which brings golf to schools in the Triad, including the after-school program at GDS.

Looking to build on a successful first year at the 2015 GDS summer camp , we are back for even more fun for 2016 with two sessions available! [MTB 101 June 13-17 and MTB 201 July 25-29] For a full week, your child will get the opportunity to safely explore our amazing local Greensboro mountain bike trails while also learning basic mountain bike repair and maintenance. Instruction will be provided from highly experienced local bike shop mechanics combined with skills instruction and guided rides from certified International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) guides. This camp will split time between instruction, skills sessions and most importantly bike riding! All your child needs is a bike in good working condition with knobby tires and a helmet. Campers will explore the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with games of all sorts, (some we’ll make ourselves!) crafts, (you’ll make your own wand!), WROCK (that’s “Wizard Rock” for you muggles out there), discussions of the book and more. These GDS Soccer Camps will expose new and experienced soccer players to exciting and interactive training techniques. This soccer experience is organized to challenge each player individually and teach the value of teamwork and sportsmanship. The camp curriculum intends to promote individual growth and technical development through basic skills, technique, and games.

Clay Russell has been coaching youth soccer for 9 years including Recreational, Indoor, Jr. Academy, All-Star, and Tournament teams. During his time coaching he has had almost 20 first place teams including 5 undefeated teams. He has coaching certificates through NCYSA and played 10 years including High School.

GDS SUMMER ACADEMY FOR OLDER STUDENTS CREDIT COURSE FOR GDS STUDENTS ONLY GDS CREDIT: GEOMETRY $1225 Rising 9th-12th * subject to departmental approval June 20-24, June 27-July 1 8:30a.m.-12:30p.m., M-F CLOSED July 4-8 July 11-15 and July 18-22 This geometry course covers one year of the standard level Geometry course at Greensboro Day School. A mastery of Algebra I is a requirement for the course. All the basic concepts of Euclidean geometry such as parallel lines, triangles, right-triangle trigonometry, quadrilaterals, circles, areas, volumes of three-dimensional shapes, and coordinate geometry are covered. Students refine reasoning skills and learn the basic rules of logical inference while being introduced to proofs. The class will meet from 8:30 to 12:30 each day for six weeks. A mid-year exam will be given at the end of the third week and a final exam at the end of the course. Daily attendance is required as each day will cover what is taught during a normal week of school. *Departmental approval is required and minimum of 6 students. The College Essay Boot Camp is designed to give rising seniors a jump-start on the college essay writing process. Lectures and discussion will focus on how to write a successful college essay. Students will focus on actual prompts and draft essays for college applications. Throughout the week, students will spend blocks of time writing and revising essays in a workshop setting, Ginger Holloway will teach this camp. NAVIGATING YOUR LAPTOP (GDS STUDENTS ONLY) $135* Rising 7th -12th August 9, 10, 11 1-3 p.m. *Note different time & fee Tues/Wed/Thurs Students in grades rising 7-12 at Greensboro Day School are required to have laptops. Using the Internet, making an Excel spreadsheet and editing a Word document are not topics that we hear about or practice just on occasion … on the contrary, we do these tasks as part of our class work many times a day! Get a start on this exciting development by learning new skills on the laptop or brushing up the old ones (getting your laptop early is not so bad either).
