All the information in this brochure can be found at www.rvcschools.org Summer Calendar: The Summer Program will begin on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 and end on Thursday, August 4, 2016 for grades K through 8. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be no classes on Fridays. Location: The Summer Program for grades K through 8 will be held at Hewitt School, 446 Hempstead Avenue, Rockville Centre. Eligibility: Any student who lives in the Rockville Centre School District and is enrolled in grades 1-8 in September 2016 is eligible for our enrichment courses. Students who reside outside of the Rockville Centre School District may register for enrichment courses, but an out-of-district fee must be paid. Registration: 1. You may register online at http://rvccommunityed.mypinnaclecart.com, or 2. By mail with the enclosed registration form, found on the last page. Please complete and return the attached application with your payment as soon as possible, but no later than June 10th, to South Side High School Room 1307, Summer Program, 140 Shepherd Street, Rockville Centre. Schedules will be mailed to students approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of the Program. ALL STUDENTS CURRENTLY IN GRADES K THROUGH 5 MUST REGISTER FOR 3 CLASSES. Schedule Changes: Any student in need of a summer schedule change may come in person to the Summer Program Office located at Hewitt School in the Library on the first day of the Program. All schedule changes must be made by Thursday, July 14, 2016. E-MAGINATION STATION Teacher: Kayla Jorde Do you like using computers and iPads? Then join this fun and exciting new class! Students will use computers to create their own PowerPoint projects and Publisher articles. We will explore our world and beyond with Google Earth and design games with Smartboard Notebook. We will also use iPads to take pictures and videos while learning to use fun, interactive apps like Keynote, Glogster, Thinglink and much more. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 2-3, 10:00 – GR. K-1, 11:00 – GR. 4-8 INTRODUCTION TO iMOVIE Teacher: Victor Lee Students will be introduced to the iMovie app and will learn how to create professional looking movies on the iPad. Students will be able to create titles, incorporate transitions and music to their “award winning” creations. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 3-8,10:00 – GR. 3-8, 11:00 – GR. 3-8 RADICAL RACERS Teacher: Michael Saglembeni This course is designed to introduce children to the fun and exciting world of remote control cars. Discover how remote control cars work by building your own from scratch. In this class, you will get to build your own remote control car, choose your own style, detail your car and create tracks to drive it on. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 3-8, 10:00 – GR. 3-8, 11:00 – GR. 3-8 ROCKIN’ ROBOTICS Teacher: Ryan Bockelmann If you are interested in robotics, engineering, and design, then this class is for you. Learn to design, build, and test your own robot in this exciting and hands-on new class. In this challenging class, students are taught engineering basics with an emphasis on exploration and trial and error field testing! Teacher: Daniel LaManna Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics all come together in this fun and challenging class. Students will apply problem-solving strategies to complete hands-on activities. Classes can vote to complete projects such as catapults, solar cars, wind energy, egg crash capsule, flight, structures, and bridges. S.T.E.A.M. JUNIOR Teacher: Dominique Andruszkiewicz In S.T.E.A.M. Jr., students learn the basics of designing, building and testing their own ideas. Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics are all used together in this fun and innovate class. Students will participate in hands-on activities that challenge their minds and involve problem-solving and team work. Classes will design and build bridges, volcanoes, rockets, paper airplanes and more! Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. K-1, 10:00 – GR. 2-3, 11:00 – GR. 2-3 SUMMER SCIENCE LAB Teacher: Jessica Sapienza School might be out, but science is in! If you’re ready to grab your lab coats and explore the world of science, then this class is for you! Together we are going to conduct hands-on experiments and activities in order to engage students in innovative and creative ways that will drive life-long learning. Art, Cooking and Creation ART-TASTIC Teacher: Victoria Florio Get ready for summer art fun!!!! This class is filled with fun summer crafts: tie-dye, spin art, jewelry-making, glitter tattoos, face painting, origami and MUCH MORE!! Students will have a chance to showcase their talents and creativity in this fun “Art-tastic” summer course!!! Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 4-8, 10:00 – GR. K-3, 11:00 – GR. K-3 THE ART OF ART Teacher: Hillary Broder This course will focus on the wonderful world of art. The students will learn about famous artists and how each one differs in style and materials used. Students will learn about every type of art from abstract to realistic. In this class, students will create portraits, collage, sculpture, drawing, and painting. All projects can be tailored to each student’s individualized interests, and it will be a fun class where each student has an opportunity to learn about art from a professional artist. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 3-8, 10:00 – GR. 3-8 ART JOURNALING Teacher: Krystle DeMartino Students will explore different types of mediums while creating an individual journal. The journals will be a mixed media college filled with inspirational quotes, photographs, paint, doodles and journaling. Students will explore printmaking, zentangles, picture transfer, stamping and many more journaling techniques. All elements will beautifully integrate….so inspiring! Time/Grade: 11:00 – GR. 3-8 BIO ART: An Exploration of Science Through Art Teacher: Hillary Broder This course will explore science and biology through the medium of art. Students will create art projects based on plants, animals, microscopic imagery, crystals, minerals and anatomy. Students will learn about famous artists who use science and bio art as their inspiration. Using paint, oil pastels, colored pencils, collage and sculpture materials, students will create their own portfolio of artwork based on this unique and exciting subject. CALLIGRAPHY CAPERS Teacher: Fran Mussillo Come and learn the skill needed to create and enjoy this old-world writing technique. Design your own invitations, cards and poems. Fun will be had by one and all while learning this lost art. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 2-8 COOKING AROUND THE GLOBE* Teacher: Liz Bacchi Grab your apron and passport as we discover simple, delicious food from around the world! Each week, students will prepare and sample recipes from various regions as well as explore some of the culture and traditions from that part of the globe. They will learn to draw animals, still life arrangements, flowers, landscapes, people and cartoons while observing famous artists’ works. WET AND WILD ART Teacher: Krystle DeMartino Summer is the perfect season for engaging children in creative, messy art. Students will enjoy making paint recipes that pop and fizz, lots of bubble art and their own one-of-a-kind bubble wand, erupting sidewalk chalk, giant stretchy reusable bubbles, paper maché sculptures and much more. These fun art activities will soon become their favorites. But don’t worry, students will design and paint their own smocks to keep them somewhat clean! Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. Sports and Athletics BASKETBALL Teacher: Sal DiGiacomo This class will focus on all aspects of the game of basketball. Skill groups and teams will be arranged by age to encourage development. Learn the importance of teamwork and the value of good sportsmanship while having fun shooting hoops. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 3-4, 10:00 – GR. 5-8, 11:00 – GR. K-2 FLAG FOOTBALL Teacher: Justin Goodman Hut! Hut! Hike!! Work on your football skills like catching and passing. Learn new plays and routes. K-2, 10:00 – GR. 3-5, 11:00 – GR. 6-8 KIDS IN MOTION Teacher: Michael Robustello Do you love going to gym class? If so, then Kids in Motion is the class for you! Come join us to play your favorite gym games such as capture the flag, hula hoop, freeze tag, prison break, dodge ball and much, much more! Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. K-1, 10:00 – GR. 1-2, 11:00 – GR. 2-3 NOTHIN’ BUT NET Teacher: Elizabeth Nugent Bump! Set! Spike! This exciting outdoor class will focus on the basic skills of not only volleyball, but also other fun “net” games too. Older classes focus on volleyball and badminton while younger classes will also play nukem, meteorite ball, garbage ball and other fun games!! Teacher: Christopher Zappia In this class, you will play a variety of baseball games such as tee-ball, baseball, kickball and running bases. SPORTS SAMPLER Teacher: Rich Petrone Be a part of summer sports fun while enjoying a wide variety of sports activities and games. Sports Sampler will include many grade-appropriate sports activities: soccer, running, football, scatterball, kickball, whiffle ball, European handball, ultimate frisbee, gaga ball, kingpin and many other games. Students will learn the importance of team sports and cooperative activities. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 3-6, 10:00 – GR. 4-6, 11:00 – GR. K-2 TENNIS Teacher: Dr. Lynn DaSilva, A.B.D. Learn the fundamentals of tennis through participation in drills, matches and a variety of other fun activities. Your coach will teach you the skills necessary to become successful in this challenging sport. Please note: All participants must wear athletic footwear and a hat. Reading, Writing and Math DIARY OF AN AWESOME KID Teacher: Jessica Whelan Can’t get enough Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Then sign up for this class and explore the humor within yourself as a writer, while also writing pieces that are more reflective. Students will scrapbook within their journal, create time capsules, explore humorous writing as well as creative writing. This is a great way to show how a love of reading any form of fiction can transfer into a love of writing and self-expression! Students will leave with a diary that captures not only their individualism, but will also become a treasured memory for years to come! Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 3-8, 10:00 – GR. 3-8, 11:00 – GR. 1-2 KINDER CLUB Teacher: Jennifer Boehm This program will provide children with exciting and enriching learning experiences. K LITTLE AUTHORS’ CLUB Teacher: Nicole Gigante Students will explore their imaginations while writing fiction stories and illustrating their own story books. Students will learn the rules of grammar, the mechanics of writing and the joys of creative story telling while enjoying a motivating environment that will boost your little author’s confidence. Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 1-3, 10:00 – GR. 1-3, 11:00 – GR. 3-8 MATH-Terpieces Teacher: Ginny Southwick Math and art have gone together since artists began creating masterpieces. Many great works of art contain mathematics from buildings and pottery to paintings and statues. Math-terpieces allows students to engage in art activities that incorporate math. We will be creating Color Wheel Clocks, a Geometric Picasso Head, exploring Circle Wheel Loom Weaving and so much more! Time/Grade: 9:00 – GR. 3-5, 10:00 – GR. K-2, 11:00 – GR. K-2 TAKE A LOOK AND READ A BOOK Teacher: Caroline Klein Come jump into the wonderful world of books. Read all assorted genres and learn about different characters, plots and exciting adventures. We will write poetry, stories and do lots more activities that have to do with books. We will even create our own hardcover books to take home as a keepsake! OTHER SUMMER OFFERINGS PRE-K PROGRAM: This program offers children an exciting and enriching learning experience. The program allows students entering Kindergarten to develop a variety of skills and areas found in the kindergarten curriculum. Students participate in activities that focus on language development, listening skills, and gross and fine motor coordination. There are opportunities for social development, and a variety of recreational activities are incorporated into each day. This program is held at COVERT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 379 WILLOW STREET, SOUTH HEMPSTEAD. DAYS & TIMES The Pre-K Program will run from Tuesday, July 5th to Thursday, August 4th. Classes will run from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday. TRANSPORTATION: Parents are responsible for dropping off and picking up children in the designated areas assigned at Covert Elementary School. Further information regarding arrival and dismissal procedures will be available on the first day of the program. REGISTRATION: 1) Registration may be done On-Line. You may register online at http://rvccommunityed.mypinnaclecart.com by June 10th. 2) Registration can also be done by Mail. Please complete and return the enclosed application (please check off box for Pre-K program) with your payment as soon as possible, but no later than June 10th, to South Side High School: Summer Program, Room 1307, 140 Shepherd Street, Rockville Centre. FEES: The fee for RVC Residents for the Pre-K program is $400.00 payable by check or money order to RVC School District. SOUTH SIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL REPEATER CLASSES: Repeater classes are offered to those students who are required to repeat a class. Classes will be held at Floyd B. Watson Elementary School, 277 North Centre Avenue, Rockville Centre. Classes begin on Monday, July 5th and end on Thursday, August 4th. Classes are held Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If your child is required to take a SSMS Repeater Class, there is no charge. Information regarding specific SSMS Repeater Classes will be available through the SSMS Guidance Office. SOUTH SIDE HIGH SCHOOL REGENTS REVIEW CLASSES: If your child is required to take a SSHS Regents Review Class/Classes, there is no charge. Information regarding specific SSHS Regents Review Classes will be available through the SSHS Guidance Office. The 2016 Regents Review Program will be held this year at Francis F. Wilson Elementary School, 25 Buckingham Road, Rockville Centre. The Regents Review Program will begin on Monday, July 11th and end on Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Classes are held Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Each class is an hour and a half session. Regents Exams will take place on August 17th & 18th. Buses will be available for students who require transportation. Students will be picked up from South Side Middle School at 8:10 a.m. & 9:40 a.m. & Covert Elementary at 8:15 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. and transported to Wilson School. Buses will leave Wilson School at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and drop students back off at South Side Middle School & Covert Elementary.
