Summer Fun In Kings Charter Social Committee Update

Lots Of Summer Social Fun In KC! Sharon Peffer, Social Committee Chair Summer is here and your Social Committee is pleased to offer a number of fun activities for all ages, starting with the Fabulous Fourth of July Celebration, one of our most popular annual family events. Decorate yourself and/or your various forms of ―wheels‖ (bikes, scooters, wagons, skate boards, etc.) in red, white, & blue and meet at Midway Park for the parade to the Clubhouse, which starts promptly at 10:00. Perennial favorite Jonathan the Juggler will perform at 11:30. Other events for the kids include The Lambeth Petting Zoo, a Moon Bounce, and face painting, with special treats of a Popcorn Machine and Sno-Cones. But . . . we need volunteers to make this happen! This is a great opportunity for a service/volunteer project for your Boy/Girl Scout or self-absorbed tween/teen. Karen Davis, the awesome coordinator for this event, has put together a list of things she needs help with. Please take a look at the insert in this newsletter and contact Karen to let her know what you will be able to help with. We can only keep the activities going for as long as we have volunteers for them. After July 4th, we have the Kids Pool Parties, a summer tradition that our KC kids really look forward to. The parties are all on Friday nights at Lakeview Pool from 8:00 – 10:00. No need to RSVP, but an adult is required to accompany any child who has not passed the Swim Test to be allowed at the pool alone, which would include all (See Social on page 2)

Board Briefs Minutes from the regular Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, May 7. The Board approved:  The purchase of recycling bins for the pools with lids at a cost not to exceed $400.  To have Williamsburg Environmental Group conduct the dam water capacity measurements at a cost not to exceed $500.  The installation of the aluminum baby pool fence at the Clubhouse by Atlas Fence at a cost not to exceed $7,423.  To increase the Clubhouse rental fees to $75 for rentals 4 hours or less and $150 for rentals over 4 hours. The new rates will take effect on July 1. You can read the minutes from this Board of Directors meeting, or any Board meeting, for the complete record of business conducted. Please see the Clubhouse staff to obtain a copy of the minutes. 

Clubhouse Rental Fee Rate Increase The KCOA Board of Directors approved a rental fee rate increase for the Great Room at the May meeting. The fee to rent the Great Room will increase in price and usage time effective July 1, 2009. The fee to reserve the room for four (4) hours or less will be $75 and $150 for more than four (4) hours. 

Kings Charter Lakes And Wetlands

Pools Cards Due

As Kings Charter residents we are very fortunate to have two beautiful lakes to enjoy. I am pleased to say the water quality is very good in both lakes, the fish are abundant, and fun to catch. It was a surprise for me to learn that one of the main sources of water feeding our lakes begins in our storm drain system, In other words, water and anything else running from Kings Charter Drive is collected with the gutter system and then fed back into the lakes. The Lakes and Wetlands Committee is responsible for cleaning the debris that finds its way into the lakes and eventually collects along the shorelines. This being said, we would appreciate everyones help in keeping the streets clear of plastic bottles, styrofoam cups, soda cans, newspapers, old advertising flyers, and specifically raking leaves and sticks down the street gutters or anything else that will end up in our lakes. Everything eventually ends up in the Chesapeake Bay and there has been a tremendous effort to keep the bay clean and beautiful. Thank you for all your efforts. Lakes and Wetlands Committee. 

The pool cards should be returned to the Clubhouse so that you can pick up your guest passes for local guests. No one will be permitted to enter the pools without their card on file. Cards must be filled out by the resident owner or renter. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have an out of town house guest (50 plus miles), you can request a dated out of town pass from the Clubhouse staff. 

Sharon Peffer, Social Committee Chair The Easter Egg Hunt was a big success in April, with many happy children, lots of candyfilled eggs, and beautiful sunny weather. Thanks to Katie Moss for coordinating this ever-popular event, as well as to all the folks who helped stuff and hide the eggs, to Linda Wilkinson for donating cookies, and to Mary Moore for helping with Peter Rabbit’s visit. The first-ever Outdoor Family Movie Night in May brought out a big crowd, many dressed in footed pj’s and carrying their sleeping bags. Folks good-naturedly enjoyed their free popcorn and drinks while they patiently waited out several startup technical glitches, and were rewarded with the feel-good heroics of Desperaux under the stars on a beautiful night. Many thanks to Leslie Doty for being the lead coordinator, to Nancy Kuppich for her help in planning, and to Chris Bazemore and Jim Brooker for manning the equipment.  Page 4

Ask Dr. Bird Atlee Family & Cosmetic Dentistry

804-550-1222 www.atleedentistry.com Q. What exactly is a root canal and when do you need one? A. Root canal therapy, contrary to popular movie and TV portrayals, is a treatment to relieve a tooth in pain. Root canal therapy is required if the nerve inside the tooth gets infected due to a large cavity or may be required due to trauma to the tooth. It is a way of treating the problem while saving the tooth. When completed and completely healed, the tooth will feel like the other teeth and last indefinitely with proper care. 

Shred Your Personal Papers When you put your trash out for pick-up, make sure you cross shred anything that would have any personal information on it. A resident reportedly put their plastic trash bags out the evening before pickup, and by 5:00 AM the next morning, their trash was gone. Lucky for them, it was only leaves and other debris from their yard. 

The committee meets on the second Tuesday of the following month to review submitted applications. If you are applying for a change, all affected residents surrounding your property must sign the application. If you are building an addition to your home or adding a shed, deck, play set, fence, or landscaping, it would be best if you attend the meeting, in the event the committee has any questions. Time To Trim And Fertilize Now is the time to trim back your flowering shrubs. They need to be trimmed before the bud is set for next year. If they need thinning, go inside the plant and trim back some of the growth for more light and air. Remove broken, unwanted or crowding branches of azaleas, rhododendrons, lilac, and other blooming plants. The blooming bushes also need to be fertilized with Holly Tone or other product. Check with your local gardening center for help. There are still lawns that have not been reseeded and are in need of cutting. Weed seeds are blown by the wind, carried by birds and animals. 

Architectural Control Committee Guideline Note Making changes to your yard, or to the exterior of your home without prior written approval from the ACC may violate the Covenants governing Kings Charter. You may have to pay fines, pay to undo the changes you made, or both. 

Social Committee Chairperson Needed For 2010 Hello KC Neighbors, After 2 years of fun and excitement serving as your Social Committee Chairperson, I will be stepping aside from this role at the end of the year to allow the opportunity for someone with new energy and fresh ideas to take over. While 2010 may seem a long way off, the Homeowners Association planning and budget work for next year is done at the end of the summer, so the opportunity to plan and budget for any new/ different 2010 Social Committee events will soon be here. If you have an interest in serving as the Social Committee Chairperson for next year, I would love to work with you this summer to make sure your ideas are included in the 2010 budget submission. Please let me know if anyone has any interest and would like to talk about what is required in the Social Chair role. It is a lot of fun and I am happy to talk about it and answer any questions. Thanks to everyone for your support of the KC Social Committee, and to me personally. I have been so grateful for your help. Warmest Regards From Sharon, Your Friendly Neighborhood Social Committee Chairperson. 
