SUMMER FUN IN KINGS CHARTER! Social Committee Calendar

Board Briefs

Linda Wilkinson & Cass English, Co-Chairs

At its monthly meeting on May 6, the Kings Charter Board of Directors took the following actions…  Approved a contract with Packet 360 to provide a wireless Internet system at the Clubhouse and at the Clubhouse Pool.  Approved the purchase and installation of benches and trash receptacles at the Charter Lake dam at a cost not to exceed $4,000.  Approved the purchase and installation of a fence around the new Lakeview Playground equipment at a cost not to exceed $1,550.  Authorized Clubhouse staff to check to see if homeowners make the necessary changes in their proposed projects approved by the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) to bring them into compliance with ACC standards (e.g. providing landscape screening, etc.)  Agreed to personally and collectively show appreciation in specific ways for the work of volunteers on Kings Charter Committees.  Decided not to take any action at this time about reported beaver in Kings Charter lakes as no damage has been reported. The Board heard concerns from… * A homeowner about other homeowners who permit their dogs to urinate and defecate on others’ property while walking their dogs. * Community Watch Chairperson Wendi Boggess about what could be done about some teenagers gathering and perhaps engaging in illegal activity in the area around the swamp.

All of the our neighborhood events are coordinated by amazing volunteers from our neighborhood with underwriting from association fees. We will need volunteers for all of the pool parties. If you are able to help with any of the upcoming events please contact Cass English, 368-0539 or [email protected], or Linda Wilkinson, [email protected], 730-7251. EVENTS BOARD · Board of Directors meeting Thursday, June 3 at 7:00 PM. · ACC meeting on Tuesday, June 8 at 7:00 PM. · Swim Lesson registration begins on Sunday, June 13 at 1:00 PM.

Debris Dumping In Lake It has been reported to the Clubhouse that residents have been seen dumping yard debris into the lakes. Please do not dump any leaves, grass clippings, tree branches or limbs in the creeks and lakes. This waste ends up at the overflow and the landscapers have a difficult time removing it. From time to time the Wetlands Committee has to take the boat out on the lakes to clean up cans, bottles and paper on the shore line. This is very time consuming and difficult too. If you see anyone throwing anything into the creeks or lakes, contact the Clubhouse, 550-2507. We also request that you not put any of your yard debris onto your neighbors wooded lot. Thank you for your co-operation. 

July 4th Volunteers - We need you! Can you believe we're already planning our Fabulous Fourth of July Celebration? This is one of Kings Charter's most popular events every year. Decorate yourself and/or your various forms of ―wheels‖ in red, white, & blue and meet at Midway Park for the parade to the Clubhouse, which starts promptly at 10:00 AM on Sunday, July 4th. Perennial favorite Jonathan the Juggler will perform at 11:30 AM. Other events for the kids include The Lambeth Petting Zoo, a Moon Bounce, and face painting, with special treats of a Popcorn Machine and Sno-Cones. But . . . we need volunteers to make this happen! Do you have a Boy or Girl Scout who is looking for a service/volunteer project? This would be a great opportunity! Karen Davis, the coordinator for this event, has put together a list of suggestions where you can help. Please take a look at the insert in this newsletter and contact Karen to let her know what you can do. We can only keep the activities going for as long as we have volunteers for them.  Page 2

Be a Host Family!

Hanover County Sheriff’s Office

Wonderful families are needed August 2–August 27. Open your home this summer and experience another culture. French high school students will be traveling to our area in August and are excited to stay with American families. A host family offers the student a place to call home during their stay. They provide three meals a day, a bed and a welcome environment. Students are treated like a part of the family and are included in activities, events and even vacations. Please contact Kristie at [email protected] or call 571-236-6288 for further information. We cannot wait to here from you and match your family with an eager student! 

We have recently experienced two scams involving driveway paving/sealing recently. One has resulted in an arrest and the other is currently under investigation. We would like to remind you to beware of door to door sales people and, in particular those who are trying to pressure you into buying their service or product. Please remember that commercial sales people MUST have a HANOVER SOLICITOR’S PERMIT with them and are required to show it to you upon request. If they do not have the permit, they are in violation of the County Ordinance. You should report solicitor’s immediately to the Sheriff’s Office. This may help to prevent you or your neighbors— particularly elderly neighbors from falling prey to a scam. To report an incident, please call 911 or the nonemergency number 804-365-6140. If you would like to know more about the county ordinance regarding solicitations, please go to our website at www.hanover sheriff.com. It is located in the crime awareness/crime prevention section. 

A Big Thank You From Furry Friends Thank you to all the generous families that donated pet food to the Richmond SPCA Pet Pantry. I collected over 700 pounds of dry pet food and over 230 cans. Thanks to you, many families will be able to keep their pets instead of putting them up for adoption or even worse, not feeding them properly. The SPCA was very thankful for all the food and I am sure the families who use the Pantry will be thankful, too! For more information about the Pet Pantry, you can visit www.richmondSPCA.org under Programs and Services. Thank you for helping me earn my Gold Award and thank you for your pet food donations. If you have any questions or I missed your house, please call me at 804-746-7854. Emily Oliver 

French Exchange Students Are you interested in hosting a student from France and taking a role in introducing him/her first hand, to our country and culture? Being a host family is an exciting opportunity to learn about another culture and in turn, families help their new friend broaden their command of the English language and experience American culture. Hosting a student for three weeks this summer could foster a life long relationship between the foreign student and your family. In many cases, exchange students return to visit their host families, as well as the host family now has a memorable association in France for possible visits to Europe. Additionally, children of host families who are studying French are not only able to practice the language with their host student, but also have an authentic and meaningful experience that one could never receive in a classroom. Please contact Kyleen Terrana at [email protected] to obtain more information and to sign up today! 

Covenant Inspections Of All Homes This Month The community-wide covenant inspection of all the homes in Kings Charter will be taking place this month. If you haven’t already done so, please take an objective look at your home in order to make sure that you are in compliance with all of the Kings Charter covenants. Some of the most common violations include: • Trash can stored in a location that is visible • Mailbox and post not in compliance with KC standards • Rotten wood, peeling paint, mold on exterior of house • Boat, trailer, commercial vehicle stored in drive way • Exterior changes made to the house without ACC approval • Unsightly yard (either overgrown or barren/dead plant material) If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact the Clubhouse. The goal is to ensure compliance with the governing documents for Kings Charter and, as a result, maintain home values. 

Architectural Control Committee Making changes to your yard or to the exterior of your home without prior written approval from the ACC may violate the Covenants governing Kings Charter. You may have to pay fines, pay to undo the changes you made, or both. 

Lawn Care Tips for April - June The most important thing you can do for your lawn is to feed it. A well-fed lawn is healthier, which means it has a better root system to combat heat, cold, drought, mowing, foot traffic and other stresses. While feeding your lawn once a year will improve its condition, feeding it four times a year will make it even healthier. If you put your lawn on the regular feeding schedule outlined below, it will look lush and green, and your neighbors will turn green with envy.
