Summer Camp 2016 Join us this summer in our studios and work closely with a professional teaching artist for a week. Every camp includes in-depth studio arts experience, high quality art materials, and a final celebration. Come for a half-day or pair a morning and afternoon camp together to make a full-day experience. Free lunch coverage is provided from 11am–12pm for campers staying all day. Join our Aftercare Art Club from 3–5pm for an extended camp experience, which features sketchbook time, guided explorations of BCA’s contemporary galleries, visits to downtown Burlington hot spots, and other artful and edible activities­—more time to explore and make!

Refunds Refunds can only be given if the request is made at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the camp. 15% of your registration fee is non-refundable. After the two week window, a class credit will be processed at the discretion of the Education Director. Class credits are non-refundable. A full refund will be given if BCA has to cancel a camp.

The BCA Center is located in downtown Burlington at 135 Church St., and houses contemporary art galleries, the Community Darkroom, Digital Media Lab, and education studios. The Print and Clay Studio is located at 250 Main St., Memorial Auditorium in Burlington. Call 802.865.7166 for specific directions to any of our other camp locations.

Full payment is required to secure your child’s space in the camp. We accept MasterCard, Visa, cash, and checks. Please register at least one week before camps begin to ensure your place. Students will be notified if a camp is to be canceled due to low registration at least a week in advance and will be refunded in full.

Teaching Assistant Positions (age 16+) Do you like working with children? Are you interested in gaining some hands-on experience in an arts classroom? BCA’s summer camp program relies on volunteer TA’s throughout the summer. TA’s assist instructors in the classroom, help monitor and play with campers during lunch coverage, and meet and greet parents during final exhibitions. TA’s are scheduled on a weekly basis and work with a specific camp and teaching artist for either mornings, afternoons, or all day.

Summer Art Institute for ages 12–18

Passionate about photography or pottery? Inspired by drawing, painting, and printmaking? Immerse yourself in a full or half day art institute for a week! Our Summer Art Institutes are specifically designed for high school students with a passion for art. Working closely with a specialized teaching artist, students will learn a variety of techniques in the medium of their choice and will be encouraged to experiment and take creative risks. In our professional art studios, students will learn to use the darkroom, digital lab, painting studio, printing press, and much more. Individual projects will be based on students’ interests.

AGES 3–5 Camp Tadpole: Movin’ & Groovin’ (8–11am) Location: Clay Studio Create it, shake it, bang it! In this week of preschool art camp we will learn how to make noisy art, like drums, shakers, rain sticks, and more. We’ll boogie down with things like painting, clay, collage, stories, and games to learn about sounds and movement. All campers must be potty-trained.

This camp is all about the ever-popular pottery wheel. Kids never get bored with learning new throwing, decorating, and glazing techniques as they make bowls, cups, and more! All items will be dishwasher safe and lead free. No experience necessary. Pair this with Break It, Make It for a full-day experience.

Do you love to take things apart? Here’s a chance to take apart old computers, typewriters, fans, toasters, and more and then rearrange the parts to make art! Campers will work with simple tools, glue, and wire to build unique and whimsical sculptures. Campers are encouraged to bring in some of their own junk to contribute to the offerings. Pair this with Cartoons or Pottery Wheel for a full-day experience.

Location: BCA Center Learn how to draw cartoon characters that you create or that you love from books and movies. Campers will look at a variety of illustrators and cartooning styles for inspiration and will discover how to develop a character and give them the expressions to make them come alive. Pair this with Break It, Make It for a full-day experience.

Campers will make their own 3-D characters come alive through the art of stop-motion animation. Forming small “production companies,” teams of campers will write original stories, sculpt characters, construct sets, and then animate their creations for the camera. Aspects of postproduction work, including some computer editing, are incorporated and campers will leave with a flash drive of their images and projects. Pair this with Pottery Wheel or Digital Art and Design for a full-day experience.

Explore tie-dye, hand sewing, fabric painting, and more. Choose from ready-made designs or create your own and leave with a finished piece at the end of the week. Pair this with Digital Art & Design or Pottery Wheel for a full-day experience.

Campers will explore the ins and outs of making paintings large and small and will use a variety of painting mediums, including tempera, watercolor, and acrylic. Learn the mysteries of the photographic darkroom! In this camp, teens will go on guided photo shoots in downtown Burlington and will learn how to print their own black and white photographs. Manual cameras, film, and paper are all provided. Pair this with Silkscreen for a full-day experience.

Take your favorite drawings, photos, and designs and print them onto T-shirts, bags, posters, and more! Working in BCA’s professional print studio, students will learn to apply photo emulsion, use a silkscreen exposure unit, and print images using water-based inks. At the end of the week, students will have an array of printed items to wear or share. Students are encouraged to bring T-shirts and other surfaces to print on. Pair this with Darkroom Photo for a full-day experience.

Location: Clay Studio Create awe-inspiring creatures out of the pages of your favorite book, from your favorite movie, or from your imagination. Will your creature have two or four heads? Will it be an animal or vegetable? You get to decide in this fun camp that lets you get creative through drawing, painting, and craft. Pair this with Pottery Wheel for a full-day experience.

AGES 3–5 Camp Tadpole: Wild About Animals (8–11am) Location: Clay Studio Lions and tigers and bears—yippee! At this pre-school art camp, students will learn about all different kinds of animals and will get to re-create their favorites through drawing, painting, collage, clay, stories and games. You’ll end up with a menagerie of creatures to bring home. All campers must be potty-trained.

AGES 6–8 Mini Worlds (8–11am)

Shrink down with us and come create small, wonderful worlds. Campers will be encouraged to explore a variety of craft media and will create tiny, intricate terrariums, doll houses, fairy worlds, and more. Pair this with Pottery Wheel for a full-day experience.

AGES 9–11 BCA & Flynn Arts: Minecraft: From Pixel Art to Life (8:30am–3pm) Location: Flynn Center & BCA Center Virtual reality becomes real-world theatrical design in this imaginative new program for Minecraft lovers! In the mornings at the Flynn, campers use dramatic play to invent a whimsical world of characters, settings, and stories inspired by Minecraft’s pixel art. In the afternoons at the BCA Center, campers shape and construct the physical world of their creation by building fantastic pixel-inspired costumes and scenery! At week’s end we’ll share our new “virtual” reality with family and friends - in the form of a miniplay. Drop-off at Flynn, pick up at BCA.  This special partner camp is led by teaching artists from BCA and the Flynn Center. Drop-off is at the Flynn Center, 153 Main Street at 8:30am and pick-up is at the BCA Center, 135 Church Street at 3pm. The BCA Center will provide supervision during lunch and campers will be escorted between the two organizations. Become a miniature fashion designer! Campers will learn basic sewing techniques and will use simple patterns to cut and create their own dolls out of various sewing materials, including cottons, rickrack, yarns, ribbons, buttons, puffy fabric paints, and more. By the end of the week, campers will have made many fashionable outfits and accessories for their own dolls. Pair this with Cool Jewels for a full-day experience.

Paper beads, glass beads, clay beads, and more! Learn how to make jewelry with all different kinds of materials. Campers will learn how to attach clasps, use beading tools, and make their own beads and pendants. By the end of the week, campers will have earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more to share or keep. Pair this with Itsy Bitsy Fashion for a full-day experience.

Fashion Design (8–11am) Location: Print Studio Make your old clothes new again by cutting, hand-sewing, and redesigning your T-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts, and even bags. Spend your afternoons altering old clothing into new trendy styles using methods such as cutting, dying, printing, re-sewing fabric, and adding embellishments. Students will also learn basic fashion design techniques to transform drab duds into something exciting. Pair this with Digital Photo or Pottery Wheel for a full-day experience.

Darkroom Photo (8–11am)

Students will spend the day at BCA’s painting studio, experimenting with different drawing and painting techniques and meduims, such as acrylic, charcoal, figure drawing, perspective, and abstraction. Students will develop a deeper understanding of professional 2-D artistic techniques and will leave with paintings and drawings to add to their art portfolio. Individual projects will be encouraged in this small class based on students’ interests. No experience necessary.

We’ll splash into things like painting, clay, printmaking, collage, stories, and games to get your child’s imagination going and to learn about what swims under the sea! All campers must be potty-trained.

Learn how to bring your favorite Lego characters to life using stop-motion animation! Campers will write original stories, construct sets, and then animate their characters for the camera. Aspects of post-production work, including some computer editing, are incorporated and campers will leave with a flash drive of their images and projects. Bring your favorite Legos (or other small toys) or use the ones we provide. Pair this with Comics for a full-day experience.

Learn design and drawing tricks for your comics and cartoons with local cartoonist Rachel Lindsay. Campers will look at a variety of illustrators and comics styles for inspiration and will incorporate special design elements into their work. Campers will also discover how to enhance their comics by learning about layouts, lettering, and figuredrawing techniques. Working in BCA’s professional print studio, students will learn to apply photo emulsion, use a silkscreen exposure unit, and print images using water-based inks. At the end of the week, students will have an array of printed items to wear or share. Students are encouraged to bring their own T-shirts and other surfaces to print on. AGES 15–18 Pottery Institute (12–3pm) Location: Clay Studio Join us for this week-long wheel-throwing course specifically designed for teens with a passion for art. In our professional ceramics studio, students will learn to use a potter’s wheel and hand-building methods to create sculptural and functional pottery in clay. Clay preparation, centering, forming, trimming, glazing, and firing techniques will also be introduced. The class size will be kept small to ensure that individual vision and projects can be developed and encouraged. No experience necessary.

Come play with your food and learn decorating techniques to turn your snacks into a piece of delicious art! Bake fancy pizzas, serve up artistic cookies, and decorate cupcakes, along with other inspired edibles. By the end of the week, campers will have explored some creative ways to visually present and document their culinary creations.  On the last day of camp, family and friends will be invited to a tasty celebration for all to enjoy! Learn how to bring your favorite Lego characters to life using stop-motion animation! Campers will write original stories, construct sets, and then animate their characters for the camera. Aspects of post-production work, including some computer editing, are incorporated and campers will leave with a flash drive of their images and projects. Join us for a week-long printmaking course specifically designed for teens with a passion for art. Students will work in BCA’s print studio and learn about silkscreening and how to apply photo emulsion, use a silkscreen exposure unit, and print images using water-based inks. Students will develop a deeper understanding of professional 2-D artistic techniques and will leave with prints, silkscreened T-shirts and posters to add to their art portfolio.
