What is Blended Learning? The concept of blended learning is straightforward : it is an educational mode by which students experience a combination of both face-to-face and virtual learning. However, the way in which blended learning is implemented can vary widely from school to school as each institution chooses the tools, methods, schedules, and resources that work best for its student population. While there are no concrete requirements for blended learning, one thing is clear: blended learning is the future of education. Chaminade College Preparatory Summer School programs have found enormous success with the blended model, which allows students to spend time on campus twice per week with a teacher and classmates, and then complete required individual work and assessments in a virtual learning environment. This means our students can enroll in more classes and take greater ownership of their path and pace. We will soon be offering blended options for our traditional students as well. Over the next few years, you’ll see our teachers centering many activities online, providing students with a more personalized learning experience tailored to their interests and strengths. Students will get immediate extra help for concepts they are struggling with, and enrichment in areas where they are excelling; teachers will have better data to inform instructional decisions, and more time to spend one-on-one with students. We’re excited to take our goal to educate for adaptation and change to the next level. If you’d like more information about our blended learning vision, visit Chaminade.org/blendedlearning, or contact our Director of Blended Learning, Ashley Benning ([email protected]).

ONLINE Computer Applications (Entering 10th grade)

This course is designed to cover the basic fundamental functions of Microsoft Office 2010, specifically PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Students will start each program learning the basic foundational skills of how to use each program. After this, they will learn the more advanced functions of each program. At the end of the semester you should be efficient in creating slideshows on PowerPoint, creating and editing different documents on Word, and setting up spreadsheets containing functions and macros using Excel. The final goal of the class is to put all of the skills together and be able to use these skills in real world situations. Since this is an online course, accountability and responsibility become very important. The class will be broken into 6 week long modules that will have a certain number of assessments due at the end of every week. The modules start the Monday of every week and all assessments will be due by Sunday at midnight. There is a description of the assignments and how to submit them below. Make sure you give yourself enough time to complete all of the required assessments for that week, because any assignment not turned in for the module by midnight Sunday will be considered late and lose credit. For further questions about the format and content of the class please contact the teacher of the course directly, Mr. Milkovich, at Jmilkovich@ chaminade.org. This class is for Chaminade students only who need to remediate this course from their 9th grade year. DATES:

Chaminade College Preparatory

Summer School 2017 - General Information Faculty Highly qualified teachers, who are certified by Chaminade’s administration, teach all courses. Whenever possible, members of Chaminade’s regular faculty are employed.

GPA Calculation If a student received a “D” or an “F” grade during the school year, the grade earned during Summer School WILL NOT REPLACE the “D” or “F” grade. For Chaminade students, Summer School grades will appear in addition to your original grade in your official transcript. Chaminade will use both of these grades in the calculation of your Chaminade GPA. Non-Chaminade students should contact their school administration as to their policy on how classes at Chaminade will calculate in their GPA and whether or not the course and grade will appear on that school’s transcript. For further clarification, please contact the Guidance Office at 818.347.8300.

Grades and Transcripts Grade reports will be mailed the week following the end of each session. Grade reports will be mailed to the home address listed in the summer registration materials. For non- Chaminade students, an official transcript will be mailed to your high school on or about August 8. This transcript serves as proof of completion of credits toward graduation. For Chaminade students, summer grades are automatically entered into Chaminade transcripts. If an additional transcript is needed, please contact the Chaminade Registrar at 818.347.8300 ext. 314.
