You can upgrade your skills, learn new skills, and work towards a General Education Diploma (GED). All courses are free of charge. You can participate in live online classes that stress task-based, real-life learning activities, or access online resources at your convenience for “anytime” learning. You can use you own computer to access the courses or those at other locations, including Contact North | Contact Nord’s 112 local online learning centres serving populations in 600 small, remote, rural, Aboriginal and Francophone communities throughout Ontario. You can enrol in courses to achieve your goals related to employment, apprenticeship registration, post-secondary education enrolment, secondary school completion, or personal independence. e-Channel is the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities-funded online Literacy and Basic Skills program serving adult residents of Ontario at no cost. Service is available in four cultural streams: Aboriginal, Francophone, Anglophone and Deaf. e-Channel removes barriers of access by offering flexible online upgrading opportunities to: •
adults with disabilities

adults who live in rural and remote communities
•
adults with transportation or childcare issues
•
adults unable to participate in on-site programming
•
adults who simply prefer distance learning
e-Channel helps learners prepare for any one of these five goals: Employment, Apprenticeship, Post-Secondary Education, Secondary Credit or Independence, and uses task-based, real-life learning activities that follow the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework. The courses and classes offered by the service delivery agencies listed on the following pages can help you upgrade your skills, learn new skills, or work towards your General Education Diploma (GED). Tous les cours sont offerts gratuitement. Vous pouvez participer à des classes en ligne en direct, qui mettent l’accent sur des activités d’apprentissage pratiques centrées sur les tâches, ou accéder à des ressources en ligne quand cela vous convient pour un apprentissage « en tout temps ». Apprentissage en ligne facilite l’accès en proposant des occasions souples de perfectionnement en ligne : •

Apprentissage en ligne aide les apprenantes et apprenants à se préparer pour l’une des cinq voies de transition : l’emploi, la formation en apprentissage, les études postsecondaires, les études secondaires ou l’autonomie. Pour ce faire, Apprentissage en ligne utilise des activités d’apprentissage pratiques qui sont axées sur les tâches et qui respectent les six compétences du Curriculum en littératie des adultes de l’Ontario. Les classes et les cours offerts par les fournisseurs de prestation de ces services, mentionnés dans les pages suivantes, peuvent vous aider à perfectionner vos habiletés, à acquérir de nouvelles compétences ou à travailler en vue d’obtenir votre certificat d’équivalence d’études secondaires de l’Ontario. Courses and Registration The courses that e-Channel makes available are offered by the Literacy and Basic Skills organizations in Ontario that serve Francophone, Anglophone, Aboriginal, and Deaf communities online. Students can choose their courses from the lists on the following pages and register with the organization offering the course. You will then be given a personal account with e-Channel and be able to access your course. Each lead organization serves a particular community or need: •
ACE Distance - Academic and Career Entrance - providing courses in English and French for preparation for post-secondary education and apprenticeship training.

Deaf Learn Now - providing courses for the Deaf, Blind-Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

Student Support On the e-Channel website, students can also find resources to help them access and benefit from their classes. The student section of the website features videos on how to login and take part in classes to prepare students for an online learning experience. Les étudiantes et étudiants peuvent choisir leurs cours dans les listes affichées sur les pages suivantes et s’inscrire auprès du principal organisme responsable qui offre le cours sélectionné. Introduction to Saba Apr. 28 Thurs., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This 2-hour class introduces the LIVE classroom, Saba, to new learners registered with GLA. During this class, we will use the whiteboard and its onscreen tools, as well as text chat, and use our microphones to communicate with other learners across Ontario. Learners are encouraged to take this course before signing up for other LIVE courses. COMPUTER SKILLS Beginner’s Guide to the Internet Apr. 26 - May 12 Tues. & Thurs., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. This course is for NEW USERS to the Internet! Surfing the web for information can be fun, but we will discuss ways to stay safe while online and discover tips on how to read web pages! Note: This is a 6-session course. Creating Documents Apr. 20 - May 25 Wed., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Posters, lists, sign-up sheets, résumés and newsletters are all examples of documents that can be created using a word processing program. In this course, we will learn the basics of how to use these programs and how to create great looking documents for school, work or home. A Gmail account will be required as we will be using Google Documents. Note: This is a 6-session course.

Good Learning Anywhere Creating Presentations Apr. 26 - May 31 Tues., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Presentations can be used to persuade or inform your audience! Sign up for this course to learn how to use Google Presentations (similar to PowerPoint) to create presentations. Time will be spent on developing online presentation skills to be used to do your final presentation. Note: This is a 6-session course. Getting to Know Mobile Devices May 19 & May 26 Thurs., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. In this course, learners will be introduced to the world of Mobile Devices such as smart phones and tablets. Together we will discuss what a Mobile Device is and some of their many uses and the advantages and disadvantages to owning/using a mobile device. We will explore how to access applications on devices and the features of the “Big 3” brands. This class is a basic overview for new users of Mobile Devices. Note: This is a 2-session course. EMPLOYMENT Essential Skills of Bookkeeping Apr. 5 - Apr. 21 Tues. & Thurs., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Do you enjoy working with numbers and organizing information? If so, a career in bookkeeping may be for you! This course introduce you to the 9 Essentials Skills required for bookkeeping! Topics will include What is a bookkeeper? INDEPENDENCE Creating a Personal Budget Apr. 6 - May 11 Wed., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Creating a budget can help us track our spending habits. This allows us to identify ways to spend our money in ways that will help us meet our goals! Whether your goal is to buy a new snow machine, save money for school, or set aside money for some fun – creating a budget can help you work towards it. Note: This is a 6-session course. Creative Writing and Slam Poetry May 17 - June 2 Tues. & Thurs., 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Come join us as we experiment with writing and build our confidence by putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!). Together, through the use of creative writing activities based on subjects you know, care, and feel about, we will get ideas flowing. As we become more comfortable with our own inner ability to write, we will have the chance to share our best creative efforts in a final slam poetry session. Note: This is a 6-session course. SHARING CIRCLE Sharing Circle Apr. 18 Mon., 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Aambe! Maajaa daa! Get involved with online learning by attending our Online Sharing Circles. Circles are held in our live online classroom. Participants will be able to learn from and interact with a variety of First Nation guest speakers. Good Learning Anywhere INDEPENDENT STUDY With Independent Study courses, there are no scheduled classes. Learners progress through the course at their own pace. Courses should be accessed on a weekly basis in order for progress to be made.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS Introduction to SABA Apr. 4 Mon., 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. May 2 Tues., 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. This class is for first time users of the SABA program. If you are taking a SABA class on the LearningHUB, it is highly recommended you attend this orientation class first. Learn how to use the Audio Wizard to check your speakers and microphone or headset so you are ready for your live class. A brief orientation on the communication tools including the microphone, text chat, feedback tool and other interactive icons will be covered. During this session you will learn how to use the markup tools and practise using them on the Whiteboard. If this course isn’t available before your SABA class is scheduled, a playback of the session should be watched so you are ready for your first class. How to Save/Manage Computer Files Apr. 28 & May 5 Thurs., 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Do you have trouble finding files after you save them to your computer? This course will show you how to save files to various drives and how to open files inside and outside of a software program. Learn important tips for naming and managing your files, including creating folders, renaming and deleting files. The LearningHUB GED Science – Part 2 (Life Science) Apr. 19 Tues., 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Life Science information helps us to make decisions daily. Life Scientists are concerned with everything about life systems from the the cellular makeup to the ecosystems found on the Earth. Strategies will be discussed on how to read and digest information and then use it to make a decision. We will look at identifying the main idea, determining unstated assumptions, and interpreting charts and diagrams plus familiarizing ourselves with scientific words. Physical Science involves the most basic questions about the universe. The range of subjects includes molecules, baking, designing cars, forces and gears. GED Science – Vocabulary Apr. 6 Wed., 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Science textbooks are full of long, unfamiliar words which makes reading and understanding them difficult. Scientists didn’t just make up the words. They use word parts whose specific meanings fit the ideas that the words represent. This class will help you have a good understanding of science vocabulary so you can better comprehend the texts and questions on the GED test. Be ready to review some science vocabulary and learn how to make connections to other “science” words. We will also give you some suggestions for follow up activities to further expand your knowledge of science words. You don’t have to know specific dates or facts, but you should have a general idea of when certain events took place. Geometry A May 19 & 26 Thurs., 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. In this two-week session, we will learn and work with lines, angles, triangles and quadrilaterals. Lines, angles and shapes can all be measured and named. If we know a little information, we can figure out a lot about a triangle, quadrilateral. Concepts learned in these sessions relate to carpentry and design. Note: This is a two-part course. Classes for Part 1 and Part 2 will be held on two separate days.Students must know how to add, subtract, multiply, divide whole numbers and decimals plus have some knowledge of algebra. In this class we will be learning how to change a percentage to a fraction and then doing the reverse by changing a fraction to a percentage. In this class we will be finding the part and the whole of a number when a percentage is known and finding a part when the percentage is known. We will also look at percentages that are greater than 100 and ones that are less than 1 percent. Do you remember that an x or a question mark may stand for an unknown number? In this class we will review the terms variables, integers and algebraic expressions. We will also be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing equations that involve solving for unknowns, ie. “x”. Review how to read coordinates, how to plot points and how to plot equations as they relate to algebraic graphing. Progressive Spelling 1 May 18 Wed., 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. This course covers short vowel and long vowel spelling patterns that use bigger words. For short vowels, learn about double consonants “Ie”; and doubling final consonant before adding “ing” or “ed”. For long vowel sounds, learn the one consonant plus “le” rule. Learn the consonant blends; wh, th, sh, ph, ch and sometimes gh (silent). Bring your word journal so you can write in your most difficult words. Learn to make a memory jogger to remember how to spell your difficult words. Bring your word journal to write down your memory joggers. OALCF LEVEL: B2.1; A1.1-A1.2; D.1-D.3 INDEPENDENT STUDY In addition to Live Classes, the LearningHUB offers Independent Study options for a variety of subject areas, including reading, writing, math, science, social studies and computer use. Adults pursuing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), Grade 12 equivalency (GED), or upgrading for employment, apprenticeship, post-secondary or independence reasons, can register for learning activities or short courses customized to their skill level and need. Independent Study curriculum can be accessed 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, so it fits even the busiest schedule. After registering, learners complete an intake assessment (sent within 3 business days of registration) and are assigned an online practitioner to work with them to create a learning plan, answer questions, and assign a username, password and appropriate curriculum. Registration for this mode of study is available year-round through the LearningHUB website, www.learninghub. ca. MICROPROGRAMMES La F@D vous offre cinq microprogrammes composés de plusieurs cours touchant un sujet en particulier. Participer à un microprogramme vous permet d’améliorer vos compétences de sorte à atteindre vos objectifs rapidement. Tous les cours peuvent aussi être suivis individuellement sans s’engager dans un microprogramme. Du français en quelques clics (DFQC) Ce microprogramme vous permettra d’améliorer vos compétences en grammaire et en écriture. Niveau 1 • L’impératif, les organisateurs textuels et les prépositions (5 modules) • L’interrogation (5 modules) • Le futur simple, l’infinitif et les adverbes (5 modules) • Les abréviations et l’écriture des nombres (5 modules) • Le présent, les déterminants et la ponctuation (6 modules) Niveau 2 • Les adjectifs et la ponctuation (5 modules) • Le conditionnel, les prépositions et les organisateurs textuels (5 modules) • Le passé composé et les participes passés (5 modules) • Les déterminants, les pronoms et les adverbes (4 modules) • Les coordonnants, la négation et le participe présent (4 modules)
Mathématiques de base (MicroMaths) Ce microprogramme vous permettra d’améliorer vos compétences en résolution de problèmes mathématiques. Niveau 2 : • Les nombres décimaux (6 modules) • Résolution de problèmes mathématiques (3 modules) Introduction à l’informatique (MicroOrdi) Ce microprogramme vous permettre d’explorer l’utilisation de base d’un ordinateur. • Le système d’exploitation Windows – niveau 1 (3 modules) • L’Internet et le Web – niveau 2 (3 modules) • La sécurité – niveau 2 (3 modules) Google Ce microprogramme vous permettra d’apprendre à utiliser un compte courriel Gmail ainsi que l’application Google Disque. Niveau 1 : • Le protocole téléphonique (4 modules) Niveau 2 : • Utilisation du logiciel Microsoft Word – 2007/2010/2013 (5 modules) • Utilisation du logiciel Microsoft Excel – 2007/2010/2013 (5 modules) • Utilisation du logiciel Microsoft Outlook – 2010/2013 (5 modules) • Utilisation du logiciel Microsoft Powerpoint – 2007/2010/2013 (5 modules) • Utilisation du logiciel Antidote (6 modules) COURS EN DIRECT Ces cours offrent un apprentissage en groupe et avec une formatrice. Les cours se donnent à une date et heure précises sous format d’une classe virtuelle. Chaque module à une durée de 1 h 30. LA F@D À VOTRE ÉCOUTE! Chaque personne inscrite à un cours autonome aura une mentore qui lui sera assignée. La mentore vous aidera durant votre apprentissage, répondra à vos questions et vous guidera quand vous en aurez besoin. VOS RESPONSABILITÉS La F@D exige que vous soyez branché au cours et que vous fassiez une activité au moins une fois par semaine. Si vous ne vous connectez pas au cours et que vous n’avez fait aucune activité pendant un (1) semaine, une représentante ou un représentant de la F@D communiquera avec vous pour vous offrir du soutien et vous encourager. Nous communiquerons avec vous de nouveau le mois suivant, si vous ne vous êtes toujours pas connecté au cours. Si vous ne vous connectez pas au cours et ne faites aucune activité pendant plus de deux semaines, la F@D considérera que vous n’êtes plus inscrit au cours. Ainsi, pour continuer le cours, vous devrez vous y inscrire de nouveau.
