delaida Cellars is one of the storied wineries in Paso Robles Wine Country and is in the midst of some exciting changes. A new hospitality center is now open to the public and includes a new tasting room, subterranean barrel room, a sensory room and swanky club members only lounge. Adelaida also unveiled new wine labels that pay homage to the history of the prized property on Paso’s westside that sits appropriately enough in the newly approved Adelaida District of the Paso Robles AVA. All of these changes and more are coming online in 2016 as Adelaida Cellars spends the year celebrating its 35th birthday. Front and center through all of this remains the highly-soughtafter wines that are being produced by standout winemaker Jeremy Weintraub and his veteran team. Weintraub signed on as winemaker at Adelaida in 2012 after being brought in to consult on the winery’s Bordeaux program. The hiring of Weintraub by the Van Steenwyck family should not be taken lightly. Weintraub, who hails originally from Long Island, NY, was one of Napa Valley’s young stars. At the time, he was winemaker for Seavey Vineyard of Napa Valley, where his Cabernet Sauvignon consistently garned high scores from wine critics — the 2010 Seavey Cabernet Sauvignon scored 97 points from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate; and Antonio Galloni of The Wine Advocate scored 2009 Seavey Cabernet Sauvignon 96 points, and the 2008 scored 95 points. VINO Central Coast Edition

“Jeremy brings an enormous amount of experience and perspective to our winery,” said Adelaida General manager Jessica Kollhoff at the time of the hiring. “We are very excited about what he sees in our vineyards and how he works with vineyard and cellar crews to craft the best wines for our customers.” Weintraub was winemaker at Shadow Canyon in Paso Robles before taking the winemaker job at Seavey Vineyard. According to Adelaida Cellars, Weintraub has a bachelor’s from Clark University and studied at Fresno State and UC Davis, where he received a master’s in Viticulture and Enology. He earned scholarships from The Wine Spectator and the American Society of Viticulture and Enology while he was at UC Davis. He held internships at Tenuta Tignagnello in Italy, in Central Otago and Martinborough, New Zealand, and at wineries and vineyards on Long Island, NY. For Weintraub the opportunity to work with the varied plantings on Adelaida’s mountain terrain was something he could not pass up, specifically its 52-year-old Pinot Noir in the HMR Vineyard. Adelaida is 14 miles from the ocean and has 157 acres under vine on seven sites and include Rhones, dry-farmed Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, just to name a few of the grapes at Weintraub’s disposal each harvest. “It’s a beautiful setting,” Weintraub said. “It feels like a family. There is great respect for each other and what we are doing and that is important. Adelaida is really exciting vineyard-wise. I’m excited about the great potential that is still here, and getting as much out

of it as we can.” Weintraub, who worked with vineyards planted on mountain slopes at both Seavey and Shadow Canyon, has a great deal of respect for the history of Adelaida and its grapes. “From a winemaker’s perspective to be able to work with 50-year-old fruit is a pretty awesome thing,” Weintraub said. “You can’t plant a 50-year-old vineyard, you inherit it and show it as much respect as possible. I love that Pinot Noir, it is unlike any that I have worked with before.” The estate vineyards are between 1,400 and 2,000 feet in elevation, feature limestone soils and benefit from cool ocean breezes. “It’s a really special site here,” Weintraub said. “It’s a combination of the soil, the climate and all of that that make wines interesting. I think the Adelaida wines are exciting and I think an increased focus on the farming is going to pay off.” That farming focus has already paid dividends as Adelaida earned a Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing Winery and Vineyard designation in 2015. What all of this equates to in the bottle is “balance.” Weintraub said there is a vibrant acidity that is in all of the wines throughout and this is the counterbalance to the expected ripeness seen in Paso Robles. “Everything is really nice and balanced, which is important to me,” Weintraub said. “I like harmony in wines. I don’t like things sticking out. I’m not doing things to force that it is just something that is always in the back of my mind. As far as my approach goes it is always there.” 10

Spring/Summer 2016

And that is as close to a winemaking style as Weintraub admits to having. “I’m asked about that but I have what I suppose would be more of an approach,” Weintraub said. “I don’t want to tell the grapes what to do, I want them to tell me what to do, largely. So I try to keep my senses as open as possible to allow myself to learn, understand and listen to what is going on here in the vineyards.” For Weintraub the task is to simply shepherd the winery into higher and higher quality wines by “finding theses spots where the vine is going to make grapes that have beautiful aromatics and have loveliness of mouth. In a lot of ways it is just there and you are farming to enhance that or not. For me that is what I am trying to maintain and enhance.” Having worked in wine regions that are set in their ways in terms of the wines that are produced and what is grown, Weintraub likes the experimentation that is happening in the Paso Robles AVA, and he adds there still has a lot of room for growth. “I am seeing more investment and more focus on understanding,” Weintraub said. “There is still a lot of dirt to be kicked here as opposed to Napa Valley where every morsel of ground has been turned over. There is a lot still be to discovered here.” Adelaida Cellars hospitality center is located at 5805 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 800-676-1232 or visit online at www.adelaida.com.

A

wise man once said, “Creating a successful marriage is like farming: you have to start over again every morning.” Winemaker McPrice “Mac” Myers knows this adage all too well. Each day he rises and goes dutifully to the vineyard planted to mostly Rhone varietals. His relationship with the grapes, like a good marriage, is symbiotic. He gives to the land. The land gives back. However, the winemaker didn’t always have a plot of land to work with. Back in the early 2000s, he was a scrappy young man getting his feet wet in the wine industry. With the aim of making wine on his own terms, Myers joined with friend and fellow winemaker Russell From of Herman Story Winery to create Barrel 27 in Santa Maria. Together, they worked to source grapes from across the Central Coast region for their respective labels. “My first vintage for my McPrice Myers label was in 2002. I made one wine, a syrah, with grapes sourced from Larner Vineyard in Santa Barbara’s Ballard Canyon,” Myers said. “My philosophy is

12

really ‘one foot in the old world and one foot in the new.’” In 2008, McPrice relocated his wines facility off Highway 46 East, but the winemaker still longed for an estate vineyard to call home. Finally, in 2014, he found a place to put down roots on the westside. The winemaker now leases a winery facility, tasting room, and vineyard—a big and welcome step forward. The 3525 Adelaida Road location is now a welcome home to McPrice Myers wines. “The goal is to one day own the property,” Meyrs said. “Having your own vineyard is most peoples’ dream, and I’m right there alongside everybody else.” That dream was born from his own tastebuds; the winemaker’s past life was chock full of trips to exotic wine regions and long, nuanced tastings. In other words: he was introduced to the world of wine sales before he ever got his hands dirty. After exploring wineries and crush pads in Santa Barbara and Paso Robles, Myers got the idea that maybe he, too, could make the delicious wine he so happily consumed. This was back in 97, before

the Paso Robles wine explosion caught fire. “It just sparked me; that’s where the seed was really planted,” Myers said. “I started educating myself and tried to drink as many cool wines as I could from all over the world.” Meyrs is a curious guy, especially when it comes to flavor. Maybe that’s why he’s always been a great collaborator and grape-adventurer (he’s always seeking out the next best vineyard). Together with winemaker Patrick McNeil, he also works to source killer grapes for their shared label, Paydirt Wines. Even with all of his various projects keeping his hands full, Myers is truly enjoying the experience of tending his own garden. The winemaker’s vineyard is currently planted to syrah, mourvedre, grenache, grenache blanc, viognier, and cabernet sauvignon. “A lot of the vineyard is east and north facing, so that area is a little warmer, which provides wines with a little more freshness and vibrancy,” Myers said. Although it may be a while before you can taste the fruit coming off his vineyard, you can still enjoy a McPrice Myers reserve flight at the tasting room. VINO Central Coast Edition

“You can come in and taste through whole bunch of single vineyard wines and get a cool little tasting of all the terroirs I source from side by side,” Myers said. “There’s a cool diversity to each vineyard.” Over the past decade and a half, Myers has done more than garner high points from Robert Parker and the wine elite. He’s made his mark as a progressive, passionate, artisan obsessed with the intersection between Golden State and Old World sensibilities. It’s working. “I use a lot of traditional techniques. We don’t de-stem the fruit and do whole cluster fermentation, which adds a lot of savory notes and texture to the wines,” Myers said. “Yet, I still proudly embrace California for what it is, and we have a lot of sunshine. I’m not afraid to show off that sunshine or the ripeness of our fruit.” McPrice Myers tasting room is located at 3525 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 805-237-1245 or visit www.mcpricemyers.com.

Symbiosis in every bottle

ine Wine Estates winemaker Patrick Muran merges art and science to create harmonious wines drawing from 18 years of experience melded with scientific method, to address every variable from hypothesis to experimentation. Muran said that he just stumbled into the art and science of winemaking in 1999 after originally planning to attend medical school. “I had just finished the MCAT and my family, who is in the medical industry said that I should look at something else,” Muran said. “I was working as an EMT in San Diego after finishing college. I was back up in the area, I grew up on the Central Coast, and I stumbled into a wine analysis position in the Edna Valley and that is where I started. I have a degree in microbiology from UC Santa Barbara and that is where my foot got stuck in the door. It has been a wonderful experience taking science applications and then all of the sudden having these creative elements available as well so it is a cool blend of the two when I think about making wine.” Muran started at the ground level and worked his way up giving him the hands-on practical knowledge needed to be successful in the winemaking world. He said that the other critical part to the hands-on, dive-in headfirst approach to learning is having a mentor that has been down the path. “When you get a wild hair and say, ‘I want to try this,’ and your mentor tells you, ‘Oh that has been tried before and this was the result,’ it is better not to go on a Central Coast Edition VINO

wild goose chase to come up with a conclusion that has already been attempted and failed,” Muran said. “I have a fantastic mentor in Christian Roguenant out of the Edna Valley and he has been able to steer me in productive directions.” After seven years in the Edna Valley, Muran went to Solvang to work for Blackjack Winery. Muran had interacted with Niner Wine Estates and heard what they were building in Paso Robles, a region in its infancy. He said he knew they were going to do it right and felt he had to get in on the project. “I started as the assistant winemaker in ’09 taking a step back but in the long run I think it was a step forward,” Muran said. “With a microbiology degree, there is a lot of emphasis on systems and structures in the human body and all of the symbiotic relationships even between organs, there is a symbiosis that occurs. The same type of scientific method can be applied to the systems and structures of winemaking.” At Niner Wine Estates they practice sustainability and Muran said that they follow every potential variable to the end to insure that not on thing is impacting the quality of the wine. For example the winery uses recycled water and rain catch systems. Muran said the variables that come into play vary from what you put down the drain to the particulates that are already present in the water and so on. Other variables at play range from, headspace in the barrel when fermenting, type of wood, size of barrel, gasses being released, temperature and time in the barrel. “Every aspect of the process from soil, water, sun exposure, how the fruit is harvested, what you put the grapes into to crush, size of barrel, type of barrel, the variables are there,” Muran said. “It is how we work with these variables that allows for the creativity to shine through the science. I feel if you can weave the different systems and processes in a sustainable manner you can create a VINO Central Coast Edition

cyclical exchange from variable to variable that will compound in the creation of some great wines.” Niner Wine Estates farms a total of 212 acres across three different vineyards in Paso Robles and Edna Valley, and makes all of the wine in the LEED Certified Winery at Heart Hill Vineyard. Muran said that he has a lot of variety to choose from and really enjoys taking advantage of the diverse grape supply he has at his disposal. Over the years, Niner has become well known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as the flagship red blend Fog Catcher currently released as a 2011 vintage. Fog Catcher is 23 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Cabernet Franc, 19 percent Carmenere, 19 percent Malbec; 10 percent Petit Verdot; 9 percent Merlot. “This wine has depth,” Muran said explaining that wine with layers is a sign of an outstanding wine. This is a bright wine with notes of blackberry, cherry and a bite of fennel. Muran said that as it oxygenates there is a hint of vanilla, too. Fog Catcher is cellared in barrel for 27 months and in bottle for two years to give it time to develop the full richness of flavor and silky mouth feel that keeps people coming back for more. Since its inception in 2001, Niner Wine Estates has been in the business of raising the bar and in some cases setting it for sustainability in practice. They have been SIP certified for years leading the way in the Paso Robles region. It is these practices that drew Muran to the art and science of winemaking, working with controlled variables in an environmentally friendly way. Niner Wine Estates is located at 2400 Highway 46 West, Paso Robles. The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 805-239-2233 or visit www.ninerwine.com.

Pear Valley

Passionate about every aspect of winemaking Lee oversees every step of production By Luke Phillips Of Vino Magazine

P

ear Valley Vineyards winemaker Jared Lee takes his hands-on philosophy of winemaking very seriously and says it’s the key to the award-winning wines being produced at the eastside Paso Bordeaux house and also the key to his own passion. Lee oversees every step of production, from the vineyard to the bottle. “That’s the appeal,” he said. “To me, that’s what’s so interesting and what keeps me fired up about. It could be a tractor one day, the lab the next and today I’m in the cellar. For me, that’s really the fun — it taps into all of those different areas and keeps me interested.” A native of Marin County, Lee moved to the Central Coast shortly after graduating high school in order to join a friend who was living in the area. He attended Cuesta College and met his future wife there before moving back to the Bay Area to finish college, eventually going to work as a manager for Diablo Grande Vineyards near Livermore. From there he went to work selling boutique wines for Baccahus and Venus in Sausalito, which is where his palate really started to develop. “It was there that I was actually tasting wines regularly and going

16

out on buying trips,” he said. “To me, that was probably one of the more beneficial lines of work because I was tasting every day and kind of getting in tune with what was being made throughout California.” Although the shop specialized in California wines, they also sold imports from France and Italy. “So I was able to get more of a grasp or an understanding of varietals and locations and styles,” Lee said. In 2008 Lee and his wife moved back to the Central Coast to start a family. “I fell in love with the Central Coast when I was down here, so it was an easy decision to come back here,” he said. “And we wanted to do the family thing, so we knew this was a good choice.” Lee went to work at Paso Robles Wine Services, a custom crush facility, in time for the ’08 harvest and met winemaker James Hendon. When Hendon was hired as the head winemaker for Pear Valley Vineyards, a previous client at the custom crush facility that was preparing to open its own production facility, Lee was also hired on as the assistant winemaker.

Winemaker Jared Lee worked at Paso Robles Wine Services prior to being hired at Pear Valley.

“It was cool because I had never really been involved with a facility that’s brand new,” he said. “So I was plumbing tanks and trying to get this place ready for crush. In ’09 we processed here for the first time and I’ve been here ever since.” Lee took over as head winemaker when Hendon left in 2011 and in 2012 he took over management of the winery’s farming operation and grower relations as well. Lee wears many hats at Pear Valley, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. “That’s probably one of the most gratifying or satisfying things about it,” he said. “I can recall the various hurdles or ups and downs or that perfect vintage or things that happened along the way. I like to be completely involved and completely in control. I think that’s the key to some of the wines that we’re making here. It’s just the connection with the product itself — it’s not just purchasing fruit or bulk wine, it’s actually fostering, working the soil and crafting wine from that, so for me that’s one of the most satisfying things.” Lee said that his ultimate goal as a winemaker is to make “really VINO Central Coast Edition

honest wines.” “The owners always wanted to make really high-quality wines at an affordable price,” he said. “They wanted to make wine accessible to everybody, which it should be. So for me, it’s just about making honest wines that kind of reflect our area here and reflect the intense amount of attention that everything gets, from beginning to end. We’re doing everything ourselves and we’re doing everything by hand. (We want to make wines) that are varietally correct, not being swayed by trends and scores, just trying to make wine that reflects our little patch of land here and our commitment to making quality wines.” Pear Valley Vineyards is located at 4900 Union Road, Paso Robles. Featured Tastng Room

Halter ranch Vineyard

Putting tasters in the heart of the vineyard It’s all about the view and the wine

A

By Luke Phillips Of Vino Magazine

fter years of planning and building, the new tasting room at Halter Ranch Vineyard finally opened on Feb. 23 and has been a big hit with Halter Ranch wine club members and new visitors alike. Tasting Room Manager Tony Quealy said that long-time wine club members who were accustomed to the quaint charm of Halter Ranch’s old, 900 square-foot tasting room situated in a barnyard next to a historic Victorian-era farmhouse, were apprehensive about the new 2,300 square-foot space located across the property’s famous covered bridge in the middle of a vineyard. “Then they see the view and they see that the idea of the building was to get them up into the vineyard and make them a part of it and they fall in love with it,” he said. “And then there’s also been an overwhelming response from new customers who walk in and say that it’s just absolutely breathtaking. So it’s been great, we’ve been receiving some great compliments.” In 2011 the team at Halter Ranch began working with San Luis Obispo architect Mike Peachey on a design that would showcase 18

the tasting room’s view of the estate's massive vineyards including 600 square-feet of windows situated on the east side of the building. “It’s all about the view,” Quealy said. “For the past 10 years in the previous tasting room down in the barnyard, the vineyard was always on the other side of the bridge,” he said. “So the heart of the project was on the other side of trees and you couldn’t really see. So the idea was to get them across the bridge and into the heart of the vineyard.” The tasting room was constructed using mostly oak with walnut added as a contrasting accent, adorned with hand-cut stonework made from calcareous limestone taken from the Halter Ranch vineyards. The stone was cut and placed by Paso Robles mason John Elwood, who spent more than five years working on the project. “We wanted to bring the elements of the outdoors indoors so there’s a lot of open wood, a lot of wood incorporated in general,” Quealy said. Another important aspect of the design was to keep the floor plan

open and airy. “Space,” Quealy said. “That was the idea behind it. We’re coming from a 900 square-foot tasting room. On weekends we’d be two or three people deep and that’s not the experience we wanted to create or give our customers.” The new tasting room can comfortably handle 70 people and the adjacent indoor-outdoor patio and back patio can accommodate another 110, effectively quadrupling the number of customers that Halter Ranch can handle. “We’ve jokingly said ‘build it and they will come,’” Quealy said. “And they are. We’ve seen a big increase in traffic.” Quealy said that the winery is in the

early stages of planning small musical performances and is also looking into providing very limited food pairings when their new commercial kitchen comes online, but the focus will always be on the wine, he said. “We’ve always focused on the wine and the experience,” Quealy said. “We may entertain some outdoor events, but our first and foremost will always be our customer service and the experience of our guests. We won’t sacrifice that.” As for the old tasting room, Quealy said that it will be repurposed and reopened at some point, possibly as a location were visitors can purchase picnic provisions. “One of the aspects that people loved

about the old tasting room was the picnic area,” he said. “They love to picnic under the trees, so we may do a bigger cheese case, have a lot more pre-made salads, charcuterie, cheese… and we’ll let people come down there and buy a bottle or a glass of wine and just picnic. We want people to be able to come here and enjoy the space.” Halter Ranch Vineyard is located at 8910 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles. Westside Wine Trail:

Art, off the beaten path By Hayley Thomas FOR Vino Magazine

W

hen you think of Paso Robles artwork, your mind probably goes straight to downtown, where paintings, sculpture, and prints shimmer behind glass at dozens of diverse galleries. Artist Janet Lynn of Pipestone Vineyard is here to smash that perception once and for all. She wants folks to know that great art can be found across the entire Paso Robles region, from dusty backroads to the tops of bucolic mountain vistas. Along with Westside Wine Trail founder Susan Poalillo of Poalillo Vineyards, Lynn is singing this truth from the highest hillsides. “There are plenty of smaller tasting rooms that are far out here, and there’s not much traffic,” Lynn said. “Pipestone has been here for 20 years, but there are so many wineries now that it can be hard to spread the word. We’re off the beaten path, so we needed to come up with something to bring in more excitement. Bringing in local art just made perfect sense.” The Westside Wine Trail will host a summer art and wine event this May 1 through the end of July, encouraging visitors to take a wine tasting detour and enjoy art hanging at five westside tasting rooms, Pipestone, Poalillo, Changala, Brecon and Calcareous, all of which are located on Vineyard Drive, Peachy Canyon, Niderer and Willow Creek Roads. Most winery participants push out 2,000 cases or less per year and offer a boutique-style tasting room experience (it’s not uncommon to rub elbows with the winemaker in the flesh). “So many wine tasters love to discovery the tasting rooms that are smaller and hard to find,” Lynn said. “There’s nothing better than sitting down with a fine glass of wine and a beautiful piece of art. They go hand in hand.” Local art has been sourced from all over the area for the upcoming event and will include artists from the Paso Robles Art Association. Works will be

available for sale alongside the wine, so you can take home your own art-and-wine pairing experience. “Art is passionate, so is wine. They are both very emotional crafts,” Lynn said of the melding of worlds. Lynn, originally a commercial illustrator from Orange County, loves the fact that so many local people across the Central Coast proudly pick up pens, paintbrushes, and pastels as a career and hobby. It seems there is no shortage of artistic spirits living in North County. “Coming to a small town changed my

VINO Central Coast Edition

perspective and I was interested in the downtown scene, where so many people are doing paintings of landscapes,” Lynn said. “The landscapes here are breathtakingly beautiful, but there are so many other forms of artwork out there, if only you know where to look.” Artists will be in attendance during the tour, so folks can meet the masterminds behind the masterpieces. This, Lynn hopes, will bring up organic discussion between the viewer and artist—not something you often experience at established art galleries. And, if the feeling is just right, collecting

— and tasting — can become a powerful pairing. “When you see a piece of art you have that immediate reaction that you just got to have it, wine is the same way,” Lynn said. “In the same way flavors form in your mouth and you know you’re in love, the right piece of art has a way of choosing you.”

t’s not often that an entire family shares the same dream. Owning an inn, ranch, museum, and vineyard has been a longtime dream for the Morelli family. Now, each member of the family is embarking on a new piece of that shared adventure thanks to their new venture, San Marcos Creek Inn. Located in North Paso Robles on the border of San Miguel, the 500-acre property features a cozy two-story inn with four intimate guest suites, a vineyard, miniature donkeys, chickens, goats, a pond, and fragrant lavender fields. “My daughter has always wanted a farm and my son always wanted a vineyard with a hotel,” Kimberly Morelli said. “My daughter would always talk about how she would guard the pigs from my husband, who would joke that he’d use them for prosciutto. Every night we’d come to the dinner table with new stories about this dream we shared.” Sparked by this combination of interests, Kimbery and her husband Roberto decided that they would sell their rental property in the Bay Area city of Piedmont and start looking for a place to start this new life. The family first searched in Napa and Sonoma, with little luck. “There was always an issue with zoning, and we wanted an ag tour business,” Kimberly said. “A realtor told us about San Luis Obispo County. So we started going every weekend, looking for the best place. Now we couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.” Five realtors and dozens of properties later, the family found the gorgeous piece of property they now call home today. Oak trees, vines, and animals dot the scenic landscape. “We said, ‘Oh my gosh. We’re home,” Kimbery said of their first encounter with the land. In 2011, they purchased the property, which already housed an inn and vineyard. In 2015, they finally moved their lives to Paso Robles once and for all. Son Sergio and daughter Sabrina is are both attending Mission Prep and have

VINO Central Coast Edition

adopted San Luis Obispo County as their new home. Because of the family’s diverse intersection of dreams and desires, San Marcos Creek Vineyard offers so much more than your average hotel stay. Guests can try estate wines at the onsite tasting room, play bocce ball, and Kimberly is planning to offer yoga, fly fishing clinics at the San Marcos pond, movie nights, karaoke, art classes and more. She calls the property her “campus,” and a clutch of antique Italian scooters and cars make up the beginnings of a museum. “We want people to feel like family while they’re here,” Kimberly said. “We always want to offer something exciting for our guests, and depending on what they’re into, we’ll bring in a fun activity. We offer so much more than wine here.” The inn’s suites are each furnished with a fireplace, and Renaissance-era antiques, original ads from the 1920s, local art, vibrantly painted walls can be seen throughout. A 5,000-plussquare-foot house will soon also be on the market as a vacation rental. The ambiance at San Marcos is quaint and European yet also harkens back to Native American and early Californian eras. “The artwork comes full circle from what was here first to what is here now,” Kimberly said. “We love San Miguel, Paso, and the history of this area. We really wanted to make our stay really different and interesting with a warm, family feel.” It might appear that all of the Morelli family’s dreams have all come true, but there’s always something to look forward to. “We don't have that little museum I dreamed about just yet,” Kimberly said. “But someday I know we will.”

occa Bella is Italian for beautiful mouth and encompasses the ideals and family history of new owners, Johnny Jantz and Shaana Rahman and the experience they create when sharing Bocca Bella Farms certified extra-virgin olive oils. Two years ago, duo, Jantz and Rahman were looking for an escape from the city life, hoping to find a little cottage on the coast. What they found in San Miguel was a lifestyle. “It is funny we never set out with the thought, ‘oh we want to find an olive farm and make olive oil,’ but when we happened upon this amazing land for sale in San Miguel we thought, ‘why not check it out?’” Rahman said. “Now two years later we are making olive oil, it is surreal.” Rahman said that the inspiration for the name and the feel of the location was largely influenced by memories of her large Italian family. “Bocca Bella is my grandmother’s maiden name so when we found the property the reference to my family just fit so well,” she said explaining that the translation was beautiful mouth. “I was raised by my mom and my Italian family and I remember my

grandma would cook these amazing giant meals out of nothing and there was always a giant thing of olive oil in the kitchen. It is those types of memories that stick with you and so this is a testament to my mother and grandma.” She explained that even the label art for the brand was inspired by and created by her mother, who was an artist before she passed away. “The first label art is a wood cut of my grandmother that my mother had done years ago and the art for this year’s Field Blend we used the same image but in an oil painting,” Rahman said as Jantz added that it was strange how perfect the branding was along with the family name. Jantz is a chef by trade with 30 years to his credit saying, “It was providence. We walked onto the property and just fell in love with the landscape, the trees and the peaceful feeling it gave us.” Rahman agreed saying that they took a leap and once they started it felt like a VINO Central Coast Edition

natural fit. As a trial lawyer, Rahman says owning her own practice has prepared her to run almost any business. So pairing her business knowledge with Jantz’s masterful cooking skills, “it all came together,” she said. Jantz manages the farm and is the chef, Rahman manages sales and events and they both work the field through harvest and production. Bocca Bella is the epitome of the boutique olive oil producer, offering only two small-lot varieties. The first is what Jantz calls the perfect tasting oil. It is 100 percent Arbequina olive oil, which has a peppery bite and a clean grassy finish. The second is a mild blend that Rahman said is great for all-purpose cooking, baking and eating out of hand, called the Field Blend. Part of the experience at Bocca Bella is enjoying a taste of the olive oil. This is done in two ways — in a tasting cup — swirl, sip, aerate over the tongue and swallow. chef Jantz. “We just finished building our tasting room and bottling area in one,” Rahman said explaining that Jantz had done the work himself. “With the new space we plan to offer more special events where we partner with a local winemaker and make pairings. People can come bottle their own olive oil and we offer chef prepared meals by reservation for those who want to enjoy more than just the standard tasting experience.” Rahman and Jantz explained that they wanted to create an environment that is inviting and has an open, family friendly, farm to table atmosphere. imerock Orchards was born out of a Mexican land grant in the late 1700s, passed down through generations of the Gonzales family on the Central Coast beginning with their greatgreat-great-grandfather and now, more than 200 years later, his descendants, Richard and Deanne Gonzales and their two grown children have put Paso Robles on the map with their walnut products. Deanne said that it all came together in 2009 and was, at the time, either a stroke of genius or they had gone nuts. “Our family had owned the property and grown walnuts there for over 40 years and about 20 years ago my husband, our Central Coast Edition VINO

daughter and I thought why not get away from the wholesale and start making walnut products?” Deanne said. “We started by finding a mill and looking into the logistics of making a specialty food product. We are now certified organic and produce walnut oil, butter, chocolate-covered walnuts and offer recipes as well as pair with local foods and wines in our tasting room.” Limerock Orchards is a small, familyowned walnut farm that harvests as a family every autumn. The entire property is dryfarmed and boasts walnuts that are robust, aromatic, and full of omega fatty acids and natural antioxidants. Deanne says the nutty flavor is her secret weapon in the kitchen. “Our walnut oil is great for salad dressings,

sautéing, baking and dipping,” she said. “For those that have never cooked with it before, we offer a recipe section on our webpage to help people get started. I really feel the applications are endless. We also produce walnut butter that is rich, savory and so much better than peanut butter. It is a real treat that is a great healthy snack. We tend to pair it with wines and bits to dip.” The Limerock Orchards tasting room offers a unique setting with a boutique featuring all things walnut available for purchase as well as other local made artisan foods like vinegar and honey. The location is also shared with two wineries: Roxo Port Cellars and Brochelle Vineyards, who work with Limerock to host events and pairings.

The tasting room includes a large wraparound veranda with lush greenery, a pond, a garden and seating areas to lounge and enjoy the venue. he 34th annual Paso Robles Wine Festival offers a full weekend of events, featuring winemaker’s dinners, reserve and grand tastings, and other showcases, at many of the wineries in the area. This long-standing Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance event has become a staple that foodies and wine enthusiasts flock to yearly. Communications Director for PRWCA, Christopher Taranto said that it all begins with exclusive winemakers dinners. “The festival truly kicks off on Thursday, May 19, with winemaker’s dinners at two locations,” Taranto said. “Both Thomas Hill Organics and Allegretto Vineyards and Resort’s Cello Ristorante, will host four winemakers at the two locations featuring eight different wineries.” The cost to attend is $125 per person for an allinclusive night of wine and delectable pairings at one of the locations.

RESERVE EVENT:

On Friday, May 20, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., the “Reserve,” event offers an exclusive evening of winetasting with fewer wineries than the Grand Tasting on Saturday. Each winery may only pour two wines within the categories of reserve, library, and “we created whites and rose, and the future,” Taranto said. “So barrel samples basically.” The evening will also feature, local chefs and caterers all providing little samples of their food with an allinclusive ticket price of $135 and $150 at the gate.

GRAND TASTING:

The Grand Tasting event will kick off Saturday, May 21 and is open to premium ticket holders from noon to 4 p.m. for the cost of $85 and $100 at the gate. The general festival admission begins at 1 p.m. with a ticket price of $65 for advanced and $80 at the gate. To encourage responsible drinking, there is also a special ticket price for designated drivers with an advanced ticket cost of $20 and $35 at the gate. The Grand Tasting will be oriented in the Paso Robles Downtown City Park by regions; featuring over 80 wineries in the Bordeaux style, Rhône style, Zinfandel varieties, Burgundian style, Italian varieties and other wild wines. Taranto said there are some new features to the event this year, with sensory stations and pop-up seminars to add an educational component to the Grand Tasting. People can go and test their sensory skills, basically smelling different scents within little jars to help people understand wine and its intricacy. “It will be an on your own self-service type of thing,” Taranto said. “What we are doing is sort of a contest, basically we are going to have people fill out a few questions and put the slip of paper into a clear box for a drawing to win a prize and it could be tickets to next year’s festival. We are trying to introduce more educational things to the wine festival just because wine is a cool thing that you can learn from a bit more while experiencing it.” The pop-up seminars will focus on three different topics; one is demystifying Rose wines, another is going to be on blends and the third is going to be on distilling and how there are some winemakers taking the Saignée or their bled off juice and distilling that down to make spirits. “Each pop-up seminar will be hosted by different wineries,” Taranto said. “We will have a winemaker hosting the blend seminar to talk about what this art means to a winemaker. We will have Alex Villicana of Refined Distillery talking about this growing trend with winemakers distilling their Saignée. Then we will have a sommelier come and do the Rose seminar.” Other features of the Grand Tasting include: advance sale lunch boxes for purchase, the winemaker’s seminar hosted the morning of the Grand Tasting, and of course winery activities are planned throughout the weekend at many of the 250-plus wineries in the region. There will also be live music by Bear Market Riot and a dance area. Anyone may purchase advanced tickets for any of the events and there will be a free shuttle to transport patrons from Paso Robles High School and Centennial Park. The goal of the Vino awards is to provide a fun and different way for wine enthusiasts to pick their favorite wines in San Luis Obispo County. Instead of having sommeliers picking their favorite wines, or having a one-day peoples’ choice (where people may taste too many wines in one day to know the difference) we are asking the public to vote for their favorites over the course of 6 months. From June 1, 2016, to Dec. 31, 2016, you are encouraged to taste and vote on the wines you are tasting. At the end of the year, we will tally the votes and announce the winners based on your votes. How it works: Participating wineries that signed up before May 1, 2016, are highlighted on our Vino map (see pages 26 and 27). As you (the voter) visit and taste wines at these wineries they will have anywhere from 1-5 wines that are eligible to be voted on for the competition. Tasting fees for each winery vary and more than likely you will be tasting wines that are not eligible to be voted on, so you will need to pay attention and be on the look out for the eligible wines. On the following pages you’ll find the participating wineries and you’ll have some room to jot down your votes to reference later when you cast your votes. The official voting takes place online at VinoAwards.com. You will be required to login, but that is so we can manage people from “stacking” votes. There is an added benefit to voting, the more wineries you visit and then vote on gets you entered into more drawings for our contest prizes. For more information on prizes, please visit VinoAwards.com. Vino magazine made every effort to get to every winery involved but with more than 200 in the area it was a challenge to see everyone and some were missed. We anticipate additional wineries signing up after the initial print deadline, so we encourage you to check the website for an updated list of participating wineries.
