LIVING OUTSIDE THE BOX

PAINT THE TOWN WITH COLOUR! I love colour! So it just seems right that I have spent the greater part of my career at a company know as the place … “Where colour lives”.

I grew up with colour so boldy bright in my room. Homes were decorated with coloured carpets, it was the seventies after all, inside and out. Bright colour was always a big part of the yard, so today it is just natural that I am still in love with colour. When I look around home it shows in the bright pots on the stove, the bright yellow stools, multi-coloured rugs and more. This year colour is really back in play for home décor, chevron and floral prints will be appearing in everything from pillows

to bedding. Some of my favourites are vases with ceramic flowers on them. They remind me so much of the style my grandparents had, but refreshed for todays style. I also love words on wall art, looking at a wall with a picture saying LOVE or SMILE makes me happy. We will see this in prints or you could do it yourself with chalkboards. The 70’s and 80’s are on trend again. These decades were filled with colour, and its back! Nobody represented colour in those days like Cyndi Lauper, she loved colour and when you see her preform it’s obvious that love has not faded. In fashion dark denim is making a comeback and we all know any colour works with demin, and let’s be honest it is slimming, which makes us all feel good! You will be seeing gingham on the comeback, suede in clothing and some

pretty chunky shoes in all colours, shapes and sizes. Layer up your jewelry, wear prints that make you happy! Go for a new colour splash in your wardrobe. Fashion for men is much the same and that may be even more exciting. For some guys wearing anything but grey will be the highlight of the year. Some exciting news is that bold bright t-shirts, multi-coloured and printed button downs are in. I’m thankful that the neon’s of last year are gone and have been replaced with great bright pinks, lavenders and many shades of blue ranging from navy to royal to robin’s egg. This is great as my little girl loves blue! Bedroom furniture and linens in bold patterns will lift any kid’s room.

Another fun and practical idea might be to get some coloured water bottles and backpacks, they are fun and less likely to get lost if brightly coloured. My next car needs to be a brighter colour. Black can drive any car owner crazy trying to keep clean, but also it’s the only part of my life that currently isn’t colourful. It would make me so happy to look out in my driveway and see a colourful car. I’m thinking maybe orange! Car manufacturers are coming out with all types of shade this year. Red has been around for awhile. Some of the new greens are bright and fresh. New blues, yellows and oranges are all fun too. It is another expression of yourself, the type and colour of your vehicle can say a lot about you!

Rio Plastic Planter Collection (shown above) - Add a splash of colour with these all season planters. Extremely durable, lightweight, UV resistant, frost proof, and 100% recyclable!

Colour says and does a lot, it can mean many things. Orange can make you hungry, red brings out the romance in life, and green though often associated with the environment is actually a restful colour. Did you know that blue can invoke a sense of power? Purple brings out one’s creativity. I should know that well (given the amount of purple at TERRA)! Red has been my favourite colour for as long as I remember but lately I find pink makes me happy. I feel great wearing pink

and buying it for my little girl as it makes her happy too. I will never give up on red though. I love my red Canada sweater and our little red wagon! As we move into a season of warm sunny days the yellow cast of sunshine will brighten our days and bring smiles to our faces. Planters in monochromic colours have been trending up in recent years and will be big again this year. As the fruit and vegetable season arrives you will see colour in your home grown food. Although the dull days of winter often drive us to buy colourful houseplants for the pure delight of it, the outdoor shouldn’t be forgotten. You can do so much, and it can last through the season, or the year. For example a planter in aqua

blue will have your summer look of colourful plants looking great. Why not keep going and pair it with orange for fall and reds and silvers for Christmas? Try getting a watering can in your favourite colour. Colourful garden baskets can help you in the garden or store kids toys. You will see loads of aqua blue, orange, yellow, and green in patio cushions and accessories this year. I hope everyone can add a little more colour to their lives this year! - Michelle

As we move into a season of warm sunny days the yellow cast of sunshine will brighten our days and bring smiles to our faces.

ROSES

IT’S EASIER THAN EVER TO ADD ROSES TO YOUR LANDSCAPE. Take a new look at a traditional garden favourite. Think you can’t have roses in your garden? Afraid of the maintenance involved? Think again - new varieties of roses make it easier than ever to add roses to your landscape. Knock Out Roses Available in multiple colours, this rose had been developed to be disease resistant, tidy, long blooming, and easy to care for. Knock Outs are, as their name indicates, a knock out in the garden! Flowers last from early summer to frost - even peeking through the first snow! The winter hardiness of this variety is amazing which allow it to be grown in containers easily. As a hedge, individually or with a mixed border, these roses are great for all gardens.

Drift Roses Introduced by the same company as Knock Out Roses, the Drift Rose is a cross between roundcover roses and miniature roses. This creates a tough, disease resistant plant that

will cascade over walls and down slopes while providing long lasting blooms. Never Alone Roses The Never Alone Foundation is a charitable, non-profit organization founded by former Winnipeg Blue Bomber and current CEO of the Calgary Stampeders, Lyle Bauer. Their mandate is to provide compassionate support and services to individuals and the families of those suffering with cancer. Together with the Canadian Nursery and Landscape Association, the Never Alone Rose has been introduced in 2015. Suited as a garden rose, this red and white blooming rose will also serve as a container flower. This rose is a resilient continual bloomer. The Never Alone Rose is a great way to let loved ones know that they’re never alone in the fight against cancer.

What’s in a name? Roses have long been favoured in the garden and for good reason. Their abundance of colour and fragrance add both beauty and elegance to any garden.

David Austin Born in 1926 - in his 20’s, David was inspired to cross old roses that were almost dying out, with modern roses to combine the charm of the old roses with the wide colour range and repeat flowering of newer varieties. Gertrude Jekyll One of the leading garden designers of her time, Gertrude created over 400 gardens in UK, Europe and America. She also wrote over 1000 articles for magazines. She is known for her use of radiant colour, and hardy flower borders showing an artistic painting like style. Still influential in today’s landscape design, she is well worthy of having a classic english rose in her name.

Morden Blush Morden Blush is a Canadian research arboretum in Morden Manitoba established in 1924. This research based facility concentrates on developing improved varieties. The facility was known for breeding the hardiest roses in Canada. Abraham Darby This apricot hued popular rose is named after the industrialist that constructed the first iron bridge located near David Austin’s nurseries. Graham Thomas This golden beauty of an old english rose is a reflection on this English horticulturist who is well known for his work with garden roses.

Morden Blush

He was instrumental in saving many of the older varieties from extinction. A writer and a garden steward, Thomas was honored with a rose in his name by David Austin in 1983. Queen Elizabeth There’s no doubt about who Queen Elizabeth is and how her royal heritage is worthy of a rose named in her honour. Introduced in 1954, The Queen Elizabeth Rose was the first rose of the Grandiflora class. Just like the Queen herself, this rose is long lasting, hardy, and historically popular.

hat better way to expand the benefits of your backyard than by adding a little sensory stimulation? Bring lovely scents to your garden and add a bouquet to your table with these plants that boast phenomenal fragrance! Peony The Peony is a popular plant in many gardens with its bushy greenery acting as a background for its large blooms in shades of white, pink, magenta, and red. Although a short lived summer bloom, it remains one of the most popular for cutting and bouquets.

Iris The Iris’ unique flowers will emerge from strong sword shaped leaves. Often presenting multiple petal colours, Irises will provide great colour early in the season with many new varieties blooming again later in the season. Rose A fragrant garden isn’t complete without roses. Old English roses are some of the most fragrant, but many of the hybrid teas are also very fragrant and great for a single bloom in vase or a large bouquet.

Sweetspire Little Henry This small flowering shrub is covered in creamy white pendulous blooms in early summer. Great for creating small hedges, or as an addition to the summer border. The blooms will also attract butterflies. In the fall the foliage turns an intense red. This plants grows well in sun to part sun. Lavender Phenomenal A long standing favourite in any garden setting, lavender is a very fragrant plant with both flowers and foliage having a relaxing scent. Phenomenal is just as its name indicates; forming a bushy mound of silvery foliage and covered with spikes of purplish blue flowers. Lavender is exceptionally hardy and heat tolerant. Lilacs What better sign of the beginning of the summer than the sweet fragrance of lilacs? French hybrid lilacs offer large clusters of blooms in mid-spring. Add some Preston Lilacs and Bloomerangs for later season blooms.

First things first – what kind of garden do you want? A mix of ornamental and edible gardening is great for the eyes and the taste buds, so keep your options wide open. THE

W

ith the smell of spring in the air we start to plan our outdoor adventures. We start to dream of summer nights filled with friends and fireworks and dewy morning sunrises on the front porch. Being outside connects us with nature and gives us a feeling of peace when everything else in life seems hectic. We go back to nature to turn off from the world and enjoy the simplicities of listening to the wind or watching the birds fly. We seek relaxation outdoors and a space for family time and reflection. If you could create an outdoor oasis of your own, what would it look like?

BRING OUT THAT INNER CREATIVE GURU AND START EXPANDING ON YOUR LIVING SPACE. Imagine a Zen garden for practicing yoga. Visualize yourself surrounded by potted tropical plants, the sound of rushing water from your fountain and a lush green grass floor. A hammock swing hangs in the corner where you sip green tea and read your favorite book. There’s a soft yoga mat that you roll out for your morning practice while watching the sun peek up over the trees or that you lay down at night to wind down with the evening air. You create a room that speaks to your soul where you can chant and breathe and just be. If you had an outdoor room, a blank slate to connect you with the world outside, what would it be? You could turn a patio set into

an afternoon classroom table where you can teach kids about the importance of food and healthy living. Teach them where food comes from, plant organic seeds; share your knowledge and the importance of connecting with the food we eat. Allow them to ask questions, read books and create recipes of their own with veggies and fruit from the garden. How about an outdoor nursery under a pergola? It’s a space that allows you to monitor your little one while you work away in the garden. It’s surrounded by mosquito netting and shaded from the Summer sun. It’s a place where naps come easy and playtime is an adventure.

Everyone needs a little more outdoor time and you would enjoy yourself a lot more if your outdoor space included elements that made you feel comfortable and at ease. Maybe you have outdoor spa days with the girls. Paint nails and toes in comfortable umbrella covered chairs while sipping wine and wearing face masks. Jump in your pool that you’ve surrounded with potted plants and concrete statues to create a tropical island feeling. Why not bring your television outside and watch the game with friends? Bring entertaining outdoors and enjoy the weather. Think about the many possibilities and maybe this year, you will create your own outdoor dream space. When you’ve spent many winter weeks indoors, your body and

mind can’t wait to shed some layers and feel the new season warmth. If you don’t have the room, you don’t need to build a structure to create a back yard paradise. All you need is some imagination. Maybe a new outdoor rug or a few planters filled with bright colored flowers. Create a space with some bamboo fencing and add some wrought iron wall art. Put in a pond and relax by the water. Adding a pallet of colours and different elements can be warm and inviting. A mirror against an empty, oversized wall will instantly open up any area. Bring out that inner creative guru and start expanding on your living space. It’s simple to bring a touch of peace to your outdoor home and if you need a little bit of inspiration, visit us at TERRA. We love to inspire!

POLLINATOR FRIENDLY SPACES CREATE A BETTER ENVIRONMENT!

P

ollinators are an important part of our environment. Bees, butterflies, and birds work hard in the garden to make most of the food we eat possible. By adding flowers and plants that will attract and feed our flying pollinators, we can help increase their survival. Without pollinators, there wouldn’t be any fruit or vegetables as they are vital to pollinate the blossoms for successful fruiting of apples, strawberries, tomatoes and everything else that grows. As we are all becoming more conscious of pollintion health, let’s be part of the solution and provide habitat, food sources, and environments for them to thrive. Help create an environmental ecosystem in your own backyard with these easy additions to the garden:

Your barbecuing feasts could include a spread of fresh tomatoes and roasted veggies from the garden, layer with chunks of wood oven smoked steak, chicken or salmon and serve on a skewer. Make an eye and pallet pleasing caprese salad by slicing up some ‘Cherokee Purple’ grafted tomatoes and layering with buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil. It’s so refreshing and your guests will love the colours on their plates. Serve stimulating smoothies by picking through your smoothie garden and grabbing fresh parsley, spinach, carrots, celery, beets, cucumber and then add a kick with some spicy ginger. Start mixing and matching flavors to find your favourite tastes.

Entertain with flair and create a buzz that will have your friends and family begging to be invited back for more. Eating fresh doesn’t only feel good, it tastes good and everyone in your family can be a part of the process. Get the kids involved or brainstorm with your partner and play around with flavours. Consider starting a micro greens garden and top everything from salads to sandwiches with mild broccoli or peppery arugula sprouts. The possibilities are endless when you grow your own edible garden. What other combinations can you think of? Do you have your own signature recipes inspired by your garden? When the warm weather hits, be prepared to shine with tasty homegrown recipes you can be proud of! Bon Appétit!
